MRC Study: ABC and NBC Anything But Fast and Furious On Gunwalking Scandal
Deaths, guns, whistle-blowers and the highest law officer in the land stonewalling a congressional investigation are the juicy ingredients of a story network news reporters would love to cover – if a Republican were in office. However, when Attorney General Eric Holder testified on Thursday (February 2) before a House oversight committee investigating Operation Fast and Furious, the news was completely ignored by NBC and ABC (there was one full story on Friday’s CBS This Morning). The virtual blackout of Holder’s testimony continues an overall trend of ABC and NBC burying one of the Obama administration’s biggest scandals, despite continual coverage by their competitors at CBS, CNN and Fox News.
MRC analysts reviewed the Big Three network evening and morning news shows and found that while CBS aired 29 stories and 1 brief on Fast and Furious, ABC aired only one brief on the June 15, 2011 edition of Good Morning America. That was still better than what NBC did on their morning and evening news programs, as the gunwalking story has never been mentioned on either NBC Nightly News or the Today show. NBC’s Miguel Almaguer, in a report primarily about a Mexican mother accusing border patrol agents of killing her 17-year old son as he tried to scale a wall, did note that “In December, Border Patrol Agent Brian Terry was killed in a shootout with bandits.” However, Almaguer never tied the Terry killing back to the gunwalking scandal.
It should be noted Chris Hansen, on the April 17, 2011 edition of NBC’s magazine show Dateline, did report that the ATF “as part of an undercover operation, actually allowed hundreds of guns to be smuggled to the Mexican drug cartels.” However, Hansen never linked Holder to the operation or even mentioned Terry’s name.
Hansen’s failure to mention Terry’s name is particularly galling considering his mother, Josephine has repeatedly demanded Holder apologize for her son’s death, most recently after Thursday’s hearing as she called the Attorney General a “coward.” Josephine Terry is not being granted the same cause celeb status that the networks gave George W. Bush harasser Cindy Sheehan.
Only one reporter, Sharyl Attkisson at CBS News, has truly cared to cover the story, even in the face of being briefly benched after the White House complained. Attkisson, who broke the gunwalking story back on the February 23, 2011 Evening News, routinely reported the hot stories ABC and NBC wouldn’t touch. The following is a timeline of those key stories and how they were covered by CBS, ABC and NBC:
# February 23, 2011 CBS Evening News:
SHARYL ATTKISSON: December 14, 2010, the place, a dangerous smuggling route in Arizona, not far from the border. A special tactical border squad was on patrol when gunfire broke out and agent Brian Terry, shown here in a training exercise, was killed....The assault rifles found at the murder, similar to these, were traced back to a U.S. gun shop. Where they came from and how they got there is a scandal so large, some insiders say it surpasses the shoot- out at Ruby Ridge and the deadly siege at Waco.

ATTKISSON: But Darren Gill insists somebody in the Justice Department did know. He was the lead ATF official in Mexico when his supervisor in Washington told him Fast and Furious was approved beyond ATF Director Kenneth Melson.

Attkisson’s dogged coverage of Fast and Furious over the past year should have shamed her competitors into sending in their own reporters to dig into the story. The fact that ABC and NBC still won’t touch it, along with a plethora of other Obama failings, demonstrates how far in the tank the liberal media are in for this President’s re-election.

I Do Not understand did you think that the premier DNC propaganda network (NBC) would provide any facts that would be less than inspirering of the Obama administration? What drugs are you on?
NBC (and affiliates) and ABC are full of “Obama bots” they repeat verbatim the Obamas, DNC, liberal talking point. Facts mean nothing, truth means nothing and honesty does not exist if it cannot be bent to meet the agenda. The possibility of finding a straight fact, truth or any honesty on those networks would take the second coming.
These networks no longer even try to hide their bias and openly proclaim their devotion to the Obama administration. They would be fine with an Obama announcement that he would no longer acknowledge the Constitution or the Bill of Rights (like he does).
They would be publishing and propagandizing how wonderful it would be for American society within seconds of the announcement. They do not understand what honest reporting is everything they produce is based on their options and their feelings, truth and facts mean nothing only the liberal agenda is valid.

You don't have to go back that far, Mother. Compare coverage of F&F with coverage of Rupert Murdock's supposed involvement in the text hacking scandal. He's already presumed guilty.
The media reports more on a private citizen tenaciously linked to a foreign hacking scandal than on a US Cabinet official implicated in a federal crime, involving multiple murders, under congressional investigation, and who may be guilty of perjury.
The MSM is aggressive or lazy depending on the subject, never the crime.

Remember, when newspapers wrote, "all the news that's fit to print?" Me neither. I have known for years that reporters reported stories with their own slant. Then, it "seemed" that they reported what was best for their country. Now they report what their "un-American," media owners tell them to report. What is TRUTH? The one few truths that I know is news outlets will lie to their readers when the TRUTH is not compliant to their agendas. Let us practice to discern so that we will learn.

I recall the way that Gonzolez and Ashcroft were truly badgered out of the position by the media.
The press seemed so intently interested in Gonzolez' actions related to President Bush's decision to fire a small # of district attorneys in 2005. They harassed Ashcroft for leading prayer meetings after hours at the DOJ building.
Compare that to the lackidasical treatment of "Fast and Furious" , a clearly botched operation that has led to many deaths, and helped the Mexican drug cartels solidify their reign of terror.
It makes me wonder if it is a dream, and if so, when will I wake up!

has become nothing but a news department talking about hollywood elites and gossip of past dead presidents.Williams is all gung-ho about exploiting the news that Kennedy had yet another sleeping partner. Fand F are not newsworthy, as it might upset his campaign for getting Barry re-elected if any truth were reported. Nbc is a very poor excuse for news of any importance.

Ever since the news broke of the U.S. Government's "Fast and Furious" gun smuggling operation to Mexican drug cartels, I've always thought this was the most precious and juicy future CBS "60 Minutes" piece of the past decade. It has every single element 60 Minutes slobbers over when deciding what topics to cover. Surely, one producer and one so-called journalist on the 60 Minutes team would love to sink their teeth into this U.S. Government blunder?
But no. They avoid this topic for the partisan, make-believe, journalist by business card only cowards they are.

Regarding when this story was "broken" and who it was doing the "breaking", there is a wee bit more to the story than just Sharyl. She is ABSOLUTELY due serious respect for her work on this subject, but the fact is that serious respect is due elsewhere too.
"The original allegations were posted on CleanUpATF.org. Vanderboegh and I, who have a history going back years of documenting allegations posted there, and pressing for congressional hearings to investigate the claims, were both contacted independently by various ATF insiders claiming to have corroborating information and documentation. Mike vetted his sources and I used my contacts to help validate that my informant was who he represented himself to be. Mike and I did what we could throughout our separate and coordinated investigations to test and corroborate what was being told. We also had a small circle of behind-the-scenes consultants, including firearms designer Len Savage, and a few other knowledgeable advisors, all with contacts and informed insights of their own, and all of whom have earned our trust over the years."
