NBC's Chuck Todd Admonishes Andrea Mitchell for Lame Attempt to Play Race Card on Rick Perry

By Geoffrey Dickens | October 19, 2011 | 16:32

Andrea Mitchell's attempt to imply Rick Perry was being racially insensitive, for calling fellow GOP presidential candidate Herman Cain "brother," during Tuesday's Republican debate, was so lame even her NBC colleague Chuck Todd wasn't buying it. Mitchell, on Wednesday's edition of MSNBC's Andrea Mitchell Reports, dredged up the N-Head controversy on Perry as she scolded: "If I were Rick Perry and had that sign or the, the stone that used to be on that, that property I'm not sure I would've gone with the 'brother' stuff, over and over again."

Todd then tried to rein in his NBC colleague as he admonished: "Just very quickly on the 'brother' thing. That's a Southern cultural thing," and reminded her that their "late friend Mr. [Tim] Russert" was also fond of using that term in a friendly way, "He loved to refer to all of us as brother." Even the Washington Post's Chris Cillizza came to Perry's defense as he agreed with Todd and offered: "It sounded to me more like Hulk Hogan saying, 'brother.'" [video after the jump]

The following exchanges were aired on the October 19 edition of Andrea Mitchell Reports:

ANDREA MITCHELL: And Chris Cillizza what about Herman Cain and [Rick] Perry trying to take him on? This is Perry trying to take him on, on 9-9-9 and the whole apples and oranges bit.

(Begin clip)

RICK PERRY: Herman, I love you brother. But let me tell you something. You don't have to have a big analysis to figure this out. Go to New Hampshire where they don’t have a sales tax and you're fixin' to give 'em one. I'll bump plans with ya brother.

(End clip)

...

MITCHELL: Brother Cillizza, I don't know if I were, as Joe Scarborough said, if I, if I were Rick Perry and had that sign or the, the stone that used to be on that, that property I'm not sure I would've gone with the "brother" stuff, over and over again. A little uncomfortable.

...

CHUCK TODD: Yeah, just very quickly on the "brother" thing. That's a Southern cultural thing.

CHRIS CILLIZZA, WASHINGTON POST: Yeah.

TODD: So I think, you know, there's, there’s times - people want to pick on Rick Perry.

MITCHELL: Okay.

TODD: This is just too easy.

CILLIZZA: I agree. It sounded more like, it sounded to me more like Hulk Hogan saying "brother."

MITCHELL: It was brother, it was brother Joe Scarborough, Southern culture-

TODD: Don't forget brother, brother, brother Tim. Our, our late friend Mr. Russert.

MITCHELL: Okay, well-

TODD: He loved to refer to all of us as brother.

MITCHELL: Well it just came off a little bit strangely.

Oh brutha...er, brother

How many race cards does Andrea Mitchell's deck have? Until something incriminating surfaces the only thing that will convince me that Perry is racist is a photo of him triumphantly pulling King Arthur's sword from N----- Rock.

None of the above

Submitted by jon_torlin on Wed, 10/19/2011 - 4:48pm.

Todd's wrong.

Mitchell's wrong.

Cillizza's wrong.

It's a Christian term of affection/acknowledgement, something I've seen used in a church I went to as a kid, basically  "brothers in Christ."  Both Cain and Perry are strong Christians, their backgrounds are similar if you think about it.

Nothing strange about that at all......to the informed.  Those idiots (Todd, Mitchell, Cillizza) are definitely uninformed about that.

The term is older than Christianity

Submitted by CobraMan on Wed, 10/19/2011 - 6:04pm.

The term "Brother" is far older than Christianity. It's been a term of unity and affiliation since at least the Age of the Spartans.

grammajane......Let's give Andrea Mitchell a break. In fact,

Submitted by Rush Fan on Thu, 10/20/2011 - 1:21am.

you really should feel sympathy for Andrea Mitchell. She has a huge burden that she carries around every day. You've heard the expression that begins with "Beauty is only skin deep...."

Well, since Andrea Mitchell is a biased Leftist so-called "journalist,' the expression and description for Andrea Mitchell, goes something like this: "Beauty is only skin deep, but she and her ideas are ugly to the bone."

Now I don't know about you, but if I was a Leftist who was ugly to the bone, I wouldn't have the nerve to appear on television.

Andrea Mitchell?

Submitted by KyWriter on Wed, 10/19/2011 - 5:15pm.

Why is this miserable, common-scold harridan still on NBC? Or anywhere else for that matter. Even Chuck Todd seems to have had enough of her. Must be something to do with the Americans with Disabilities Act. I didn't know it covered delusional ideologues, but it apparently makes an exception for dessicated fishwives.

More "strange" terms and/or titles

Submitted by CobraMan on Wed, 10/19/2011 - 5:56pm.

Here's some more "strange" terms and/or titles:

Bother, can you spare a dime?
Brother in Arms.
United Brotherhood of Carpenters.
International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers.
International Brotherhood of Magicians.
Brotherhood of Railroad Brakemen.
International Brotherhood of Teamsters.
Brotherhood of Street Racers. (That's GOT to be racist!)
(Feel free to add to the list.)

My God! I never knew how "strange" the term Brother really is! It's as if every single Union member strangely calls themselves "brothers" or "sisters!"

Andrea, you need to get out more. Perhaps then you'll realize that the term "Brother" isn't slang, like the term "Bro" is.

Does seem a bit odd doesn't it...
1. Freemasons say "Let the brother receive the light..." Guess they are trying to convert black guys.
2. Band Of Brothers wasn't a series about a military unit, guess it was about The Ink Spots.
3. Oh Brother Where Art Thou wasn't a movie either, it was about a blind black guy looking for another black guy.
4. Brothers in Christ I suppose means that Christ ate black guys. Didn't know he was a cannibal.
5. My own brother Andy, well darn, here I thought we grew up together, but I guess he had that disease that Michael Jackson had that made him look white.
I know these where pretty hokey, but you did ask readers to add on to it.

Adrea boring

Submitted by NotFondOfLibs on Wed, 10/19/2011 - 11:25pm.

Andrea Mitchell has become such a boring partisan hack you can see her attempts to smear any Republican within shouting distance of her. She should go home and take care of her health issue. Maybe NBC would see fit to substitute a real journalist for her instead of a water carrier and mouth piece for Obama.

To "reign in" might mean to insert a new monarch, if it was actually a real expression.  On the other hand, to "rein in" is what you do to a horse that is running too fast - you pull on the reins.  I suspect that you meant the latter.

I admire your precision. Truly I do.

But I've found (much to my chagrin, I might add)...that when I am a bit busy, and typing for all I'm worth, I will actually make the most stupid errors.

Their/there/they're. Its/it's. Like that.

Although I knew the diff between rein/reign....I truly enjoy coming across a phrase/spelling about which I'm not sure, causing me to look it up and learn the difference.

For example..."Toe the line/Tow the line".

On that, I shall rein myself in, or in the words of Timothy H...."Sometimes it's just not worth chewing through the restraints".
