GOP Debate Moderator Brian Williams Loves to Badger Republicans from the Left

By Geoffrey Dickens | September 07, 2011 | 08:00

Tonight Brian Williams will moderate, along with Politico's John F. Harris, the GOP presidential candidate debate at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library. If recent performances by the NBC Nightly News anchor are an indication, candidates (particularly those favored by the Tea Party) should recognize his hostility to their agenda and be prepared for a number of topics and questions from the left.

Ever since its emergence, Williams has undercut the Tea Party, its champions within the GOP, and its cause of fiscal conservatism. At the same time, Williams has heralded its chief opponent Barack Obama.

Update: Williams incessantly peppers Republicans with questions from the left during debate.

(video after the jump)

Mocking the Tea Party...

In the summer of 2010 Williams began mocking the Tea Partiers as unsavvy paranoids. On the August 23 Late Show With David Letterman, Williams made fun of the signs he had seen at Tea Party rallies, as he told the late night talk show host: "It makes people feel better to say 'Take our country back.' If you ask them, they would say from, 'from the Trilateral Commission, from the big bankers, from the Council on Foreign Relations.'...You see a lot of signs, 'Federal Government Out of My Social Security,' 'Federal Government Out of My Medicare and Medicaid,' but for the federal government, of course, those programs would not exist."

Williams continued that refrain during NBC's 2010 Election Night coverage with his Nightly News anchor predecessor Tom Brokaw as he tried to toss a wet blanket on the Tea Party's historic success.

NBC's Tom Brokaw: "Matt Kibbe, who speaks for Freedom Works, the Dick Armey organization has said, 'We want this message to go across the country. The people want less from their federal government.' We've heard that before, when it bumps up against reality and you're talking about closing a base or shutting down an agricultural substation of some kind, then it gets pretty tough to do, Brian."

Williams: "Reminds me of the signs at more than one rally this past season: 'Get the government out of my Social Security. Get the government out of my Medicare.'"

...Its Champions in the GOP

Williams has also attacked those in the GOP who have championed the Tea Party cause, namely - Texas governor and presidential candidate Rick Perry, former Alaska governor and 2008 vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin and current Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker.

Williams introduced Perry to his viewers, on the August 16 Nightly News, as a name-caller who came out "swinging and talking" and alerted his audience that the White House had already warned him "to watch what he says."

"On the broadcast tonight, fighting words. Rick Perry comes out swinging and talking, and the White House tells him to watch what he says....The rest of the country is learning what Texans already know about their Governor, what he says, what he does, how he does business....Today's debate had to do with money, name-calling, and whether or not the President of the United States loves his country."

Williams repeatedly derided Palin, for of all things, her retelling of the famous midnight ride of Paul Revere, actually devoting segments to the perceived gaffe on three straight weeknights, beginning with this report his June 3 show:

WILLIAMS: And this piece of video from a woman prominent in the news this week already has tongues wagging. It's from her tour of historic sites -- listen to the following and you shall hear, Sarah Palin's version of the midnight ride of Paul Revere:

SARAH PALIN: He who warned the British that they weren't be taking away our arms, by ringing those bells and making sure as he's riding his horse through town to send those warning shots and bells that we were going to be secure and we were going to be free.

WILLIAMS: As she said, that already has — as we said, rather — that already has people talking. Sarah Palin touring the Freedom Trail in Boston. Of course, the real life version involves lanterns.

Back in 2007, however ,Williams ignored a historical gaffe by a then-candidate Barack Obama when he claimed his parents "got together" because of "what happened in Selma" even though his mother and father had married four years prior to the famous 1965 march in Alabama.

...And Its Cause of Fiscal Conservatism

On the February 18 Nightly News Williams hyped the fight between Wisconsin state Republicans and public unions as a decisive backlash against the Tea Party. Williams summoned images of the revolution in Egypt: "On the broadcast tonight, the uprising at home...another day of fury in Wisconsin...From the Mideast to the American Midwest tonight, people are rising up. Citizens uprisings are changing the world."

By the time the Wisconsin Supreme Court handed GOP Governor Scott Walker and the Tea Party a huge victory, by allowing a collective bargaining law to be implemented, Williams had forgotten all about what he previously celebrated as a momentous struggle, by ignoring that bit of news on his June 15 broadcast. However, Williams, on that show, did report about the troubled Broadway production Spider-Man: Turn of the Dark.

Williams' news embargo of that ruling wasn't surprising as Williams has, on numerous occasions, sided against the Tea Party's cause of fiscal conservatism by advocating for increased spending on government programs and tax hikes on job producers.

On his July 31, 2010 special "Taking The Hill: Inside Congress" Williams depicted any GOP attempt to balance the budget as an attack on the poor as he asked Democratic House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi: "A liberal member said to me his fear is the poor are gonna get hurt and the rich are gonna get by without harm in this. Is that your fear?" On the other hand, Williams pressed Republican Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell about raising taxes on the wealthy as he demanded: "Why shouldn't rich folks pay more?"

Prior to that special Williams led his December 6, 2010 newscast this way: "Good evening. It's a fair question to ask, and for a while now Americans have been wondering how lawmakers in Washington could possibly extend tax breaks for wealthy Americans while allowing benefits for jobless Americans to be cut off."

However that wasn't the first time Williams played the class warfare card, as on the December 1, 2010 Nightly News, he offered just one challenging question to deficit commission co-chairmen Erksine Bowles and Alan Simpson, and not surprisingly it was from the left: "It seems to me there's two arguments. There's what you’re trying to accomplish and then there's how you're trying to accomplish, and there are, as you know, critics of what you're trying to do. James K. Galbraith writes in the New York Times, 'Bowles-Simpson proposal is an assault on the middle class, the working class and the poor.'"

Story Continues Below Ad ↓

...But Heralding Its Opponent

In sharp contrast, Williams, on the August 8, 2011 Nightly News, looked to the President for hope as he wished Obama would take hold of a "leadership moment" and bring "sanity" back to Congress when he asked CNBC's David Faber the following question:

"I'm not a historian, but I think this is a leadership moment, potentially, for the President of the United States. He's getting pressure to force Congress into a sudden breakout of sanity. If that happens, how long until we could get our top credit rating back?"

Of course this wasn't the first time Williams carried water for Obama. After John Boehner, on the January 6, 2011 Nightly News, charged that "ObamaCare will ruin the best health care delivery system in the world, and then, thirdly, I think it will bankrupt our country," Williams returned fire for the President as he lectured the Republican Speaker of the House: "Two points: What do you say to those who would disagree that it was the best health care delivery system in the world  because they, by the millions, weren't getting it? And, second, where are you getting the notion — as you said again this morning — the American people want it repealed? Our exit polling was about 48-47, very evenly split on that."

Williams ignored the results of another poll from Fox News/Opinion Dynamics, taken in mid-December of 2010 that showed a solid majority, 59%, were for repealing all or part of ObamaCare, vs. 31% who wished it left alone or expanded.

When viewers of Wednesday's night debate watch Williams hurl hardball questions from the left at GOP presidential candidates they should keep in mind this is the same man who, when given the same chance, didn't exactly treat Obama in a similar manner.

During an exclusive one-on-one interview with Obama on August 29, 2010 Williams tossed this softball at the President: "Finally, I'm hoping to find you in a reflective mood on a cloudy day. We're the first to speak to you coming off your summer vacation. How does it re-charge you? What do you think about? What do you see? What do you read about? How are you thinking about your job these days?"

Knowledge is Power

Since it is well known that he is a devoted leftist leaning so called journalist and not an objective moderator as he would lead us to believe, I have no problem with him. It is too bad that he cannot show the same respect for opposing views that he would demand of a Republican. Their(his) agenda is so exposed to the hypocrisy and double standard of today's journalism that it makes me pity the fact that he actually thinks he's relevant to the discussion.

What I don't understand

Submitted by Turn Right on Wed, 09/07/2011 - 9:21am.

is why the Republicans keep giving credibility to Williams and his ilk by allowning them to moderate high-profile events like this. Clearly they know that he is not objective and instead is an advocate for the Democrats.

They can't find anyone else to host these things?

I too question why republicans continually give these partisan hacks a seat at the table. There are other journalists that are impartial that would be much better at questioning the participants. And just possibly we might be able to better discern which candidate we would like to support.

This is MSNBC for crying out loud. After the debate, MSNBC will have ten leftists analyzing the debate. They won't have anything nice to say about anyone but Jon Huntsman, so there's no reason to play nice.

If he tries to use "many agree" or "most say," challenge him on it. Even if they're "economists" (on the economy) or "scientists" (on global warming), there are plenty if them that disagree who deserve to be considered.

He was on CSPAN radio

Submitted by forest on Wed, 09/07/2011 - 10:10am.

I heard Williams talking about his upcoming role as moderator of the Republican debate, and he uncorked a real whopper.

He set up his thoughts on "infrastructure" spending by telling a story of how he flew into LAX in an old 737, the "same speed" we flew decades ago, and the airport was dilapidated no unlike those "in Iraq", and then he had dropped calls on his cell phone leaving the airport. All this to try to boost the idea of infrastructure spending.

The old 737 belongs to a private company and their profits/losses depend on fuel costs. Government taxes, drilling/refinery prohibitions and onerous regulations are what drive up fuel costs and put airlines in bankruptcy. I don't see how giving the government more money and power to throw around will help airlines buy new planes.

And dropped calls? Again, private companies. The reason for drops is almost always government - usually local zoning - and not an unwillingness of the companies to spend on networks. "Infrastructure" spending will likely be used to paper over local government shortfalls again, and allow them to keep up the NIMBY blitzkrieg that prevents good cell coverage. Seriously, if you get alot of drops in a particular area, look up the zoning ordinance and history of applications and you'll find your answer.

I don't know about LAX, but I doubt it's like Iraq.

This guy is a partisan idiot. I hope he's so clumsy in setting up his attacks at the debate.

Did I say "attacks"? I meant "questions", of course.

It might be possible

Submitted by jon_torlin on Wed, 09/07/2011 - 10:59am.

Considering that California is getting to be if not already in a very very sorry state, I can see this happening.  Private or otherwise companies would be shelling out so much in taxes and fees that they can't keep enough for themselves to maintain upkeep and maintenance on just about anything.  California is about as anti-business as Illinois is, which is why so many businesses have left the state in droves.

Add to the crime rate in LA, especially with the gangs and etc, I would call that city dilapidated in quite a few areas, and I wouldn't accuse the state of being the Golden State that it may have once been as it had been said.

We could pull out the old Concorde proposals from the 1950's and people like Williams would think it's a terrific idea, again. An international government program that went over budget, went over timeline, suffered technical difficulties, and resulted in low production numbers. It was perfect - a big expensive drawn-out government-driven failure.

I submit this to each participant tonight.

Submitted by Ashrak on Wed, 09/07/2011 - 10:59am.

If Mr. Williams plays that game, I suggest that the candidate with the most guts should make him "GRIT" his teeth by asking him if he is a moderator or a participant in the debate.

Newt, whom I would never vote for, took this path recently and it was quite successful. I was happy to see that happen.

I suggest that a candidate hammer Williams with questions that SHOULD be being asked but that go unasked by media. GunWalker would be my first choice.
Someone asking Williams why he hasn't been reporting on it would be deeeeeeelicious.

Mr. Williams - Shouldn't each and every one of you on that stage be distancing yourselves from the failures of the Bush administration? Will each one of you openly denounce the failure of the tax cuts and lies about WMD?

Candidate with guts - Oh, you want to participate in this debate rather than moderate it, eh Mr. Williams? Ok.

Mr. Williams, shouldn't you be reporting on the GunWalker Scandal, which makes Watergate and Iran-Contra look like child's play, wherein the Obama administration blocked application of the nonsense infringements upon the Second Amendment, to which ordinary Citizens are subjected, in order to intentionally arm known criminal cartels by callously running guns across the border? Why have you, and so many others in the Old media, refused to report on this Scandal, even as it rages on the internet, Mr. Williams?

Sadly, me thinks the only one with the guts to actually do it will not be on that stage tonight, she is elsewhere.

Tonight, Republican candidates have a national stage among peers in front of the NBC man. If they do not toss GunWalker itself out there, much less the "moderation" bias, then it will be confirmed, yet again, that this field of candidates is indeed WEAK and that there is not a leader among them.

That an individual right exists requires that some policy positions be removed from the table of debate.

I'm most disgusted at Brian Williams . .

Submitted by Gary Hall on Wed, 09/07/2011 - 11:43am.

. . . for his almost decade long effort of attempting to portray President George W Bush as someone who doesn't like blacks - a racist. Most of his effort here was associated with Williams' complete lack of objectivity in his understanding and coverage of Katrina.

He's a sick and dangerous man, this Brian Williams. The Republicans are absolutely stupid for allowing him to be associated with their debate, and as such should have used the occasion to publicly expose Williams for what he is.

(;~/ gary

PS - Housing bubble crisis: I remember an interview  Williams gave to Senator, then candidate, Obama in late 2007. Here, at the 3:18 mark. The housing bubble crash was in the air and the credit crisis fallout from that was in the air. Williams asked, Obama, " who's to blame -- who do we see about this..?" To which Obama went into a very lengthy explanation about how his side thought what they did to create the housing bubble in the first place (Clinton era policy) was a good thing, and then fairly accurately described how, as the rise in home price values accelerated and everyone jumped on the bandwagon, it got out of control.

  • Obama: Well, I uh, think there are a lot of folks who have to take some responsibility. The original idea was a good one, which was that let's see if we can distribute this more broadly and make it easier to provide loans to people who otherwise might be-- not be able to get a mortgage loan

No it was not a good idea; rather it's proof that massive governmental efforts at wealth redistribution can bring a country - the world - to it's knees.

As Obama talked, Williams pulled back. It was obvious that Williams did not want to have on the table for discussion, any blame associated with the Democratic party, and as Obama finished, Brian Williams jumped in and quickly changed the subject, asking how the campaign was  going.

Williams is simply a shrill for the Democrat Party - nothing more.

Brian Williams - "fruits of the Clinton economy?"

Submitted by Gary Hall on Wed, 09/07/2011 - 12:20pm.

This comment from Williams is beyond the pale:

  • Williams: . . but we've had a good run here.  We're still enjoying the fruits .. really, of the Clinton economy.

What? He's saying this in 2010? The Clinton economy - the bubble economy of the late 1990's, Brian Williams, collapsed in March of 2000. Poof - gone - kerplunk.

And, when it collapsed, all of those pretty little budget surpluses disappeared, as well as all of the future projected surpluses.

Let's read what one of the left's premier economists, Dean Baker, CEPR, had to say about that Clinton economic experience (my bold):

  • March 16, 2000 (a day when the NASDAQ closed at 4,717.39), Dean Baker of the Center for Economic and Policy Research said: "The main feature of the 'new economy' is a stock market bubble of unprecedented magnitude. When the bubble bursts, the new economy will just be a bad memory. The inflated stock market has created enormous distortions in the economy, the ramifications of which will only be apparent when stock prices return to more normal levels. If the market falls 50 percent and loses $10 trillion of wealth in a correction, it's going to be very hard to avoid a recession. A lot of these dot.coms are worth a corner lemonade stand and are putting real companies out of business. What are you going to tell people who lose much of their retirement savings in their 401K when there's a downturn?"

Well gee - you can depend on folks like Brian Williams to blame it all on the next guy, can't you.

  • March, 2001 (a year after the crash). Baker said: "The decline in the stock market was an entirely predictable event for anyone familiar with basic arithmetic, even if the exact timing could not be known in advance.  [..] .As a result, millions of families have seen their dreams of a secure retirement or their children's college education vanish with the stock market bubble. The level of negligence of the nation's political leaders in ignoring the stock bubble exceeds anything since the days of Herbert Hoover."

Now - in all the opportunities out there, does anyone ever remember a Brian Williams, or any other national MSM figure, asking Bill Clinton how he feels being called negligent and being compared to Herbert Hoover?

Baker is still a regular guest on MSNBC, PBS, etc., and is widely sought out and quoted for his socialist views by the print media.
