Media Softballs to Obama: Why Won't Republicans 'Budge' on Tax Increases?

By Geoffrey Dickens | July 11, 2011 | 17:10

Six out of seven reporters, called on by Barack Obama at today's press conference, asked a question of the President that came from the left and/or blamed Speaker John Boehner and the Republicans for standing in the way of a deal on the debt ceiling.

Ben Feller of the AP, began the trend of questioning when he asked how Obama was going to deal with Republicans who were "adamantly" opposed to tax increases. CBS News' Chip Reid followed with "isn't the problem the people who aren't in the room, and in particular Republican presidential candidates and Republican Tea Partiers on the Hill?"

USA Today's Rich Wolf then took the baton from Reid when he asked: "You keep talking about balance, shared sacrifice, but in the $4 trillion deal that you're talking about roughly, it seems to be now at about four-to-one spending to taxes; we're talking about $800 billion in taxes, roughly. That doesn't seem very fair to some Democrats."

Sam Stein, of the liberal Huffington Post, brought up the high unemployment rate under Obama but only as a rationale to oppose cutting federal spending as he prodded: "With unemployment now at 9.2 percent and a large chunk of those lost jobs coming from the private sector, is now a really good time to cut trillions of dollars in spending? How will we still create jobs?"

The following are all of the questions posed to the President during the July 11 White House press conference:

BARACK OBAMA: Alright, with that I'm going to take some questions, starting with Ben Feller.

BEN FELLER, AP: Thank you very much, Mr. President. Two quick topics. Given that you're running out of time, can you explain what is your plan for where these talks go if Republicans continue to oppose any tax increases, as they've adamantly said that they will? And secondly, on your point about no short-term stopgap measure, if it came down to that and Congress went that route, I know you're opposed to it but would you veto it?...Do you see any path to a deal if they don't budge on taxes?

...

OBAMA: Chip Reid.

CHIP REID, CBS NEWS: Thank you, Mr. President. You said that everybody in the room is willing to do what they have to do, wants to get something done by August 2nd. But isn't the problem the people who aren't in the room, and in particular Republican presidential candidates and Republican Tea Partiers on the Hill, and the American public? The latest CBS News poll showed that only 24 percent of Americans said you should raise the debt limit to avoid an economic catastrophe. There are still 69 percent who oppose raising the debt limit. So isn't the problem that you and others have failed to convince the American people that we have a crisis here, and how are you going to change that?...Do you think he'll [Rep. John Boehner] come back to the $4 trillion deal?

...

OBAMA: Rich Wolf.

RICH WOLF, USA TODAY: Thank you, Mr. President. You keep talking about balance, shared sacrifice, but in the $4 trillion deal that you're talking about roughly, it seems to be now at about four-to-one spending to taxes; we're talking about $800 billion in taxes, roughly. That doesn't seem very fair to some Democrats. I'm wondering if you could clarify why we're at that level. And also, if you could clarify your Social Security position. Would any of the money from Social Security, even from just Chained CPI, go toward the deficit as opposed to back into the trust fund?

...

OBAMA: Sam Stein.

SAM STEIN, HUFFINGTON POST: Thank you, Mr. President. With unemployment now at 9.2 percent and a large chunk of those lost jobs coming from the private sector, is now a really good time to cut trillions of dollars in spending? How will we still create jobs? And then to piggyback on the Social Security question - what do you say to members of your own party who say it doesn't contribute to the deficit, let's consider it but not in the context of this deal?...Are there things with respect to Social Security, like raising the retirement age, means testing - are those too big a chunk for -

OBAMA: I'm probably not going to get into the details, Sam, right now of negotiations. I might enjoy negotiating with you, but I don't know how much juice you've got in the Republican caucus. (Laughter.) That's what I figured. Alright, Lesley Clark.

Story Continues Below Ad ↓

LESLEY CLARK, MCCLATCHY NEWSPAPERS: Thank you, Mr. President.

OBAMA: Thank you.

CLARK: Have you - you've talked with economists, you said that economists have agreed that a deal needs to be made. Have you worked with U.S. business leaders at all to lobby Congress to raise the debt ceiling? And if so, who are you talking to?...And can you say, as the clock ticks down, whether or not the administration is-

OBAMA: I'm sorry-

CLARK: Can you say, as the clock ticks down, whether or not the administration is working on any sort of contingency plans if things don't happen by August?

OBAMA: We are going to get this done by August 2nd. George Condon.

GEORGE CONDON, NATIONAL JOURNAL: Mr. President, to follow on Chip's question, you said that the Speaker faces tough politics in his caucus. Do you have complete confidence that he can deliver the votes on anything that he agrees to? Is he in control of his caucus?...So your confidence in him wasn't shaken by him walking away from the big deal he said he wanted?

...

OBAMA: Last question. April Ryan.

APRIL RYAN, AMERICAN URBAN RADIO NETWORKS: Mr. President, hi. I want to revisit the issue of sacrifice. In 2009, you said that - expect the worst to come; we have not seen the worst yet. And now with these budget cuts looming, you have minorities, the poor, the elderly, as well as people who are scared of losing jobs fearful. And also, what say you about Congressman Chaka Fattah's bill, the Debt Free America Act? Do you support that bill? Are you supporting the Republican bill that is similar to his, modeled after Congressman Fattah's bill?

Good Lord, does the Obama

Submitted by tcm14 on Mon, 07/11/2011 - 5:23pm.

Good Lord, does the Obama White House write these questions beforehand for the reporters to ask? Cause I couldn't imagine Obama's own staff being more fawning than these "journalists" are.

Pretty much so

Submitted by jon_torlin on Mon, 07/11/2011 - 5:32pm.

Yeah, he never does these things unprepared.  The questions are vetted or even in some cases deleted or altered to make him look good.  That takes a lot of effort these days.

Jon, Respectfully, I

Submitted by Van Halen on Mon, 07/11/2011 - 6:06pm.

Jon,
Respectfully, I disagree. In fact, I submit that if you did your own poll of the media - especially those who cover Obama, you'd find that they are the worst kind of Leftwing myrmidons that can be imagined. It seems they have one slogan when covering any story:
Above all, Liberalism!
Above that, Barack Obama!

to any of these softball questions. It's just agonizing listening to the most brilliant president of our lifetime struggle so hard to turn the little wheels in his brain to give the most basic off-the-cuff responses to questions. Which are then filled with 10 minutes of "aaaaaaaand's" and 'uuuuhhhhhh's".

And they call Bush dumb?

As usual, when we saw Obama on the TV screen we muted the sound. As they were showing a reporter asking a question, I spoke for him, to my wife. "Mr. President, why are the Republicans such meanies?"

I didn't realize I was quoting the real question. He's so predictable.

President Obama is a Muslim (from his own lips), Kenyan (read it from his publicist) a homosexual (read it on a news magazine cover) and a Socialist (I'm alive and can see it for myself)

Chip Reid, have a look at

Submitted by Van Halen on Mon, 07/11/2011 - 6:04pm.

Chip Reid, have a look at this list and tell me where the problem is coming from:

Three years of Obama has given us:

- $14 trillion deficit
- ruined economy
- ignores the War Powers Act
- gas/food/clothing prices skyrocketing
- 5 wars, one with a record death toll
- foreign policy disasters

- raiding the public pension fund to avoid the debt ceiling

- lost 800+ seats for his own party

- poll numbers in the toilet

- 44 million Americans on food stamps

- 1 in 4 mortgages under water

- ATF gunrunning scandal unfolding

ANYBODY BUT OBAMA!

" $14 trillion deficit" in two words a figure and symbol you managed to make 2 errors. 1st, it is the debt that stands at $14 trillion and 2nd, it stood at $10 trillion when Obama took office. To be consistent and fair, if you attribute the $4 trillion added over the last 3 years to Obama then you must also attribute the other $10 trillion added before to the respective presidents on who's watch that debt was added. Those men would be Reagan, Bush and Bush. So Obama hasn't given us a "$14 trillion deficit" , he has had help.

"ruined economy" last I checked the economy was ruined when he took office. since then the market has risen more than 30% and corporate profits and cash on hand are at all time record highs. taxes are at all time record lows.

uh, why bother.

To be fair the debt was 13.5

Submitted by Dan The Man 2 on Mon, 07/11/2011 - 10:36pm.

To be fair the debt was 13.5 at end of 2010 and 10 at the end of 2008 so 3.5 in two years and 7 in 4 years. Bush years added about 5 trillion in 8 years. Then when we compare performance well Obama dies. So get your facts straight hate.

I caught about 20 minutes of this

Submitted by Kingfish17 on Mon, 07/11/2011 - 6:04pm.

I caught about 20 minutes of this press conference.  In all honesty, I used to believe that nobody who was elected President could be anything less then intelligent, because of the rigors involved in the election process.  But after watching Obama today, there is no way that anyone could come across with any other observation that this man is a blithering idiot.  He can barely put together two coherent sentences.

I take it that nobody asked him about his previous vote to not raise the debt limit?  I know he had his press secretary try to explain this away back in April, but it would have been fun trying to see Obama explain his prior "mistake".

How about asking him about

Submitted by Reaver on Mon, 07/11/2011 - 6:53pm.

How about asking him about what he said back in December, that we had to extend the Bush tax cuts because raising taxes in a weak economy would cost millions of jobs?

Press would rather die with Obama than own up to their lies

Submitted by Slyrr on Mon, 07/11/2011 - 6:11pm.

The Democrat Press is in full-court defense mode. The man they pimped and whored themselves for is crashing and burning, and that means the media is crashing with him. They HAVE to defend him with outrageous lies like this. What else can they do?

Does anyone think that Obama's media slaves will say to the people, 'OK - we admit we were wrong about this Obama character. Turns out we shouldn't have told you to vote for him! Sorry!'

They'll go down with this sinking adminstration, straight to the bottom of the sea before admitting they lied and that they were wrong.

If a Liberal/Democrat politician/media figure wants to put their arms around you, or pat you on the back, all they're doing is looking for a good place to stick a knife.

On another note... Mr. President, isnt the real reason these talks have stalled due to yourself and other Democrats refusal to budge on and insistance on raising taxes?

If we wanted only the people in the room

Submitted by octavioj on Mon, 07/11/2011 - 8:52pm.

Why do we need to elect 435 House members and 100 Senators? The leadership provides directions but each member still has to answer to their constituents. And Speaker Boehner cannot coerce the members like Minority leader Pelosi did. Not sure why Democrats seem to vote more in lockstep. Maybe Ann Coulter is on to something with her last book.

Submitted by hayate1 on Mon, 07/11/2011 - 10:36pm.

Over the last three years I bet you cannot show me one roll call where republicans had 2 or more members vote outside of party lines. Or better still, show me 2 roll calls where any republican wasn't in lockstep with the party. Even better still, show me any roll call where republicans voted in favor of bills they once wrote and supported during the last 3 years.
