Today Show Calls GOP 'Surprise' Vote in Wisconsin an 'Outrage'

By Geoffrey Dickens | March 10, 2011 | 11:51

NBC's Meredith Vieira opened Thursday's Today show alerting viewers that Republicans in Wisconsin had caused a "capitol chaos" with a "surprise maneuver" to pass a "controversial budget proposal without Democrats" and her colleague Ann Curry, in teasing a John Yang story, did her one better calling the vote an "outrage."

In the ensuing Yang piece, headlined: "Outrage In Wisconsin, Senate Republicans Cut Union Rights, Bypass Democrats" Yang never bothered to mention the reason Republicans passed the bill "without Democrats" was because they were hiding out, but he did make sure to include footage of protesters repeatedly chanting "Shame!"

The following teasers and Yang segment were aired on the March 10 Today show:

MEREDITH VIEIRA, OPENING THE SHOW: Capitol chaos!

(Footage of protesters chanting, "Shame! Shame! Shame!")

VIEIRA: Republican senators rushed out of Wisconsin's capitol building under police escort after they used a surprise maneuver to pass that controversial budget proposal without Democrats present. And this morning demonstrators are planning another massive rally to voice their anger.

...

ANN CURRY: We turn now to that outrage, you just heard about in Wisconsin, where the Republican controlled senate voted last night to cut collective bargaining rights for public employees. NBC's John Yang joins us from Madison with more. Hey John, good morning.

[On screen headline: "Outrage In Wisconsin, Senate Republicans Cut Union Rights, Bypass Democrats"]

JOHN YANG: Good morning, Ann. This morning's paper tells the story. "Capitol Shocker." Democrats left pondering their next move, this morning, now that the Republicans seemed to have figured out a way to outfox them.

UNIDENTIFIED MAN: This is a violation of law!

Story Continues Below Ad ↓

YANG: With Wisconsin's 14 senate Democrats still out of state, Republicans abruptly ended the standoff over public workers Wednesday night, using a procedural maneuver to vote on key parts of the bitterly contested bill. The debate that roiled for three weeks was over in just 30 minutes. As lawmakers voted, thousands of protesters clogged the state capitol with a simple one word chant: "Shame!"

(Footage of protesters chanting "Shame!")

YANG: For weeks the capitol has been ground zero in a battle over union rights for state workers. In an 18-1 vote, with no Democrats present, Republicans removed all spending measures from the bill that kept sharp its most controversial components: Sharp limits on collective bargaining rights for state workers with increases in their health care and pension costs. Republican Governor Scott Walker, who says the bill is needed to help close the state's $3.6 billion deficit, praised the senate Republicans saying, "I applaud the Legislature's action to stand up to the status quo and take a step in the right direction." Senate Republicans needed a police escort as they left the capitol after sending the bill to the state assembly where it's expected to pass today. Despite the protesters, senate Democrats concede it's a done deal. The next step could be to the courts. The Democrats allege that or maintain that last night's vote was illegal. Ann?

CURRY: Alright John Yang this morning. John, thanks.

I thought they thought wealth

I thought they thought wealth was bad and evil? They need to do their part for less so everyone can have their Ipod, laptop, home, education ON THEIR OWN BACK per the true Progressive nature (as noted by J Jackson Jr). How can they justify more than say $35K/yr when the average salary is less than that?! Where is their socialist will where everyone gets paid the same? You know, for the "childrens' sake!"

Instead they ran away from THEIR RESPONSIBILITIES to ALL Citizens of Wisconsin.

Upon their first appearance back in chambers, the rest of the legislators should present a bill making it a felony criminal offense to abandon their seats.

Penalties should include loss of ALL benefits accrued the repayment of all salaries and wages paid throughout their career of 'public service' and mandatory prison time of no less than one year per day missed.

As it is, they will be treated as heroes and rewarded for the uncivil activities.

This left wing bomb thrower

Submitted by Miss_Me_Yet on Thu, 03/10/2011 - 12:15pm.

This left wing bomb thrower headline tells the true story of just what's really going on in state politics across America.

They ( NBC ) have finally , as the Republican governor and legislature have made perfectly clear, admitted that  the rights being protected to the death by confused liberals in Wisconsin, are those of the unions, not the state employees forced to join and participate, many times against your will, to their union dues extortion scam, simply for the right to work for your own state government.

Then, how on earth can they even speak to the subject of " Bypassing the democrats", when those same democrats have shirked their sworn duty, as state lawmakers, instead they are MIA in neighboring Obama country, Illinois for the better part of three weeks, still with no end to their magical mystery tour in sight?

Liberals ... we can't live with them, they couldn't survive without us ...

Oh, bite it, Dems

Submitted by jon_torlin on Thu, 03/10/2011 - 12:14pm.

Screw them, the dems had more chances than they deserved and apparently the part about separating the bargaining stuff from the budget was something the republicans had planned as a last resort, oh hell, that was a brilliant maneuver!  This was the equivalent of giving them enough rope to hang themselves with.

We said it before, it didn't work for the Texas Dems to do what they did by running off to New Mexico and Oklahoma, it sure as hell wasn't going to work for the Wisconsin dems.

And for them to be b!tching about "violating" the law?  Thou be hoist on thine own petard, silly sirs!

Ugh, anything more from me at this point would require lots of censorship(read: re-typing several times over) so that's what I think of that.

Have a nice day, Wisconsin Dems, you BETCHA!

Hmmmm.....I wonder if people

Submitted by tampamom25 on Thu, 03/10/2011 - 12:17pm.

Hmmmm.....I wonder if people who are hollering about this vote had anything to say when health care was passed behind closed doors, with no public knowledge of what was in it, and Ms. Pelosi saying that we couldn't know what was in it till we passed it? Wouldn't it be refreshing if the msm carried BOTH sides of the story, instead of whipping people into a frenzy by telling only what they want people to hear? I'd say there's more than a bit of hypocrisy and a double standard coming from the left. Here's a piece by Gov. Scott Walker that was in the Wall Street Journal. Sounds sane and rational to me. http://online.wsj.com/article/SB1000142405274870413220457619026078780598...

If I recall the HCR bill was published in late December and wasn't voted on until February or March (after Brown was elected in Jan). This was when all the controversy came out about the death panels and the paying for abortion items which were discussed.

Health Care Bill

Submitted by Kingfish17 on Fri, 03/11/2011 - 6:24pm.

Wasn't the final Health Care Bill the Senate version of the bill?  The Senate voted on the bill on December 24th, 2009.  Are you saying that that bill was posted online prior to December 24th?  Or are you saying that it was posted online after it's passage, but a few days before the House voted passage of the Senate Bill.

Let me know if I'm inaccurate regarding any of the above.

And btw, Jer, I'm still interested in your opinion about "Collective Bargaining Rights".  Looks like you can post again.

And the final bill being posted "for several days prior to passage [as had preceding versions]." has exactly what to do with how the bill was rammed through by Dems? What possible ramifications are you applying or attaching to "public scrutiny and debate" in that regard? Also, you got a set of balls on you, replying to a post of mine directed to someone else; especially considering how much you complain when I do it to you. Talk about union mentality.

Submitted by almostacowboy on Thu, 03/10/2011 - 12:24pm.

By leaving their states, the Wisconsin and Indiana Dhimmi-crats are adopting the same attitude as the unions - they'll only participate if they're guaranteed a win. Or is it "soviet union mentality"? Remember when the Red Army Hockey team played the Philadelphia Flyers in 1976? After the commies didn't get their way on a penalty call, their coach took the team off the ice. After explaining to the Red's coach that not only would they forfeit the game, they'd also forfeit all the TV revenue, they rethought their position and returned to the ice, wherein the Broad Street Bullies kicked their Red Commie butts 4-1. Any politician who pulls that stunt should be treated the same way - forfeit all pay and benefits and have his tail kicked.

"Sneak attack" completely foreseeable

Submitted by nkviking75 on Thu, 03/10/2011 - 12:45pm.

I don't remember exactly where I heard it, but I know this possibility has been discussed by pundits several days ago. That means this strategy was completely foreseeable. That, in turn, means the Dems could have been there to vote, and perhaps sabotage the legislation by whatever tools were available to them. Far from a sneaky, underhanded maneuver, the Republicans gave the Democrats plenty of time to work out a compromise. There were even negotiations going on between the parties as if they were North and South Wisconsin. After about three weeks of this nonsense, the Republicans brought about the inevitable, the Dems are finally ending their childish exile, the governor will sign the bill, a lawsuit will be filed, and life goes on.

I don't believe he was the original, but he was one of the first to talk about this option a few weeks back. I'll be watching Brett Baer tonight as Charles is usually on. I think the 3 weeks served a couple of purposes. One was to give the Dems some time to possibley come back save a little face. The other was to give the 3 independent, non-partisan legislative commissions a chance to rule on whether or not a revised bill would pass muster. It did and bingo bango, it's on to the Assembly.

Health Care Vs Wisconsin

Submitted by FaulknerFan on Thu, 03/10/2011 - 12:56pm.

In the health care vote Reid refused to take a second vote in the senate as required to adopt the changes made by the house because the new Mass Senator gave the ability to the Republicans to block it. So Dingy Harry just skipped the vote and declared it passed. I don't understand how this was legal at all but don't recall hearing any MSM raise a single complaint. Now, with the Dims ILLEGALLY leaving the state, they claim foul when the Republicans use LEGAL means to pass the bill. What a Crock.

unless you've done your homework, cause she'll get ya. This is a smart, sharp woman, and likely as a result of her experience as a litigator, she uses those cross examining skills of hers in interviews, and if she thinks someone is lying or dodging, she won't let them get away with it.

As for Kirsten Powers, have you noticed that she hasn't done Megyn's show since her epic slapdown? I think that's funny, actually. I wonder if it's because Megyn's invited her and Powers' has gutlessly passed, or because Megyn won't waste her time with her? Interesting.

Apparently taxpayer outrage against the unions is banned from recognition by NBC. The taxpayer outrage is not greedy, vulgar and unruly, so I suppose it doesn't count. The taxpayer seems to be the villain in many of their stories.

Today Show calls GOP vote an "outrage". Well, not exactly.

Submitted by Jer on Thu, 03/10/2011 - 2:41pm.

Obviously the reference was to the Dems REACTION to the surprise vote...not the vote intself. Big difference.

Not quite obviously

Submitted by Agnostic on Thu, 03/10/2011 - 2:56pm.

I read the same way you did the first time but after reading over it a couple of times realized it could be taken either way - especially the screen capture - the story itself would explain about the outrage being the reaction to the vote. Kind of shows that you find what you are looking for and that people will be biased regardless - unbiased journalist are a thing of fiction.

Jer, a question

Submitted by Kingfish17 on Thu, 03/10/2011 - 2:58pm.

What's your take on "Collective Bargaining Rights" for public employee unions? Are these really rights, or are they agreements between public employee unions and the state or local government? If they aren't rights, why do networks, including FOX, continue to call them rights?

Evidently my response didn't post. I'm having all sorts of problems in addition to the formatting glitch, so I'll try again later.

I'm genuinely interested in what you have to say. Not trying to set you up.

And I attempted to post a straightforward response and it got zapped.

The Unions are costing to much!

Submitted by gxa99 on Thu, 03/10/2011 - 2:53pm.

All the perks state and Federal employees get are breaking local, state, and Federal budgets. Isn't that the reason Gov Walker is proposing these cuts/changes? It's about the runaway debt! The State Union workers suck WAY too much money from tax payers. If something isn't done these idiots won't have a frickin' job. They just don't get it. All these liberals keep yammering about is sacrafice EXCEPT FROM THE UNIONS! Hypocrisy run amuck! Government budgets are in the red and something has to done about it!

Just curious*

Submitted by cajun2 on Thu, 03/10/2011 - 3:07pm.

I have been unable to find any polls taken in Wi. There are 5.5 million people who live there. The public employees, police, firemen, and teachers represent about 600,000 people. How do the other 4.9 million people of WI feel about their governor and his efforts to follow Wi  law by trying to balance the budget? Anybody know?

CheeseHeads Want to Take Back Government from Unions

Submitted by Country Dragon on Fri, 03/11/2011 - 8:11pm.

I am a tax payer, home owner, pay 60% of my health insurance, have my own 401k, and worked for the same company "Non-Union" for over 30 years, they have been hit with economic downturn, and I have not had a raise in over 3 years. Most of the people I have talked to are happy as hell that Gov. Walkers has the backbone to take on the Democrats and the Unions and their "ENTITLEMENTS" The Democrats sold out the taxpayers of Wi to the Unions, the only sad part is that the Police and Firefighters are still Union Controled. The News Media is very slanted and you rarely hear much about the supporters of Gov. Walker but get out and talk to the real middle class..the non-goverment workers and you will hear the truth. We need to speak up..and be heard.. GO PACKERS GO WALKER...

36 years at the same place here. I've been salaried all the way. And eve3n though we do work with a union, here in this Right To Work State of Texas, the union has been effective without being overpoweringly stupid. I respect the unions in Texas. They tend to concentrate more on what's right than how quickly they can run the company into the dirt.

Outrage? I'll show you outrage: ObamaCare

Submitted by needle on Thu, 03/10/2011 - 6:08pm.

The Wisconsin bill to curtail Unions was not drafted in secret.

There wasn't any lying about what was in it.

It does not facilitate abortions at the taxpayers’ expense.

It does not take money from Medicare, and saddle the taxpayers with massive unwanted debt while its promoters lied outrageously saying that it would not cost the taxpayers one dime.

It does not vastly expand governmental bureaucracy.

It does not vastly expand unwanted government intrusion into people’s lives.

There was no backroom bribery using huge amounts of the taxpayer's money to buy votes for it.

It does not force people to buy something, in fact it rescinds the forced confiscation of union dues from people.

Ann Curry needs to learn what an outrage is; she could start by looking in a mirror.

- Looking forward to the self-annihilation of the Manipulated Stories Machine.

The inevitability of this war should have been obvious.

Submitted by Thalpy on Thu, 03/10/2011 - 7:52pm.

It would be a profound mistake for the unions to persist.
