Matthews Rages: Newt Gingrich Looks Like A 'Car Bomber' Who 'Loves Torturing!'

By Geoffrey Dickens | March 02, 2011 | 19:25

Chris Matthews, once again, abandoned any notion he was serious about establishing a new tone of political civility in the wake of the Tucson shooting, as on Wednesday's Hardball he compared former Speaker of the House and possible GOP presidential candidate Newt Gingrich to a terrorist as he screeched "He looks like a car bomber" and even described him in demonic terms, adding: "He's got that crazy Mephistophelian grin of his. He looks like he loves torturing."

The following Matthews rants came during a discussion about possible GOP presidential contenders with the Chicago Tribune's Clarence Page and The Huffington Post's Sam Stein on the March 2 Hardball:

(video, audio and transcript after the jump)

(MP3 audio)

CHRIS MATTHEWS: Let me ask you this thing, they're starting to fire people over at Fox because they're just trying to double-dip. They're trying to go both ways now. Newt [Gingrich] and [Rick] Santorum are clearly running right now, Clarence. I think anybody else on the list ready to jump in? I don't think Newt's a factor. How many times he been married? I mean I just think this whole experience with Newt - you can't just wipe the board clean and say, "That wasn't just me that got kicked out of the Speakership" for totally embarrassing the country with ethics in his personal life. I mean how can he walk back and in and say, "That wasn't me?"

CLARENCE PAGE, CHICAGO TRIBUNE: Well this is Newt's time to run, though. I mean the party's base is fired up. He's always been probably the leading fundraiser out there, at least before Sarah Palin came along. He has a good shot at winning the nomination. Winning the general is a whole different matter. But this...

MATTHEWS: But he looks like a car bomber. He looks like a car bomber. Clarence, he looks like a car bomber. He's got that crazy Mephistophelian grin of his. He looks like he loves torturing. Look at the guy! I mean this, this is not the face of a president.

Story Continues Below Ad ↓

PAGE: But don't kid yourself, Chris. We in the media, we in the media love Newt, though. Because he's just a sound bite machine. You talk about a gaffe-maker. I mean and he's very affable. You know he, he just can't stop talking and saying what's on his mind, which we in the media love. There's not a media primary out there, but he'd win it.

MATTHEWS: Well do you think? Look Sam [Stein] do think this guy's mien, his presentation, is a little too Mephistophelian? A little too frightening for people, to be a presidential candidate? Don't you have to sort of have to like the guy first, before you vote for him? Just a thought.

...

MATTHEWS: You know this car bomber reference is very clear to me. I have this notion of a guy, it's obviously not a car bomber. But this guy that he kind of loves the attack. He gets a thrill, Clarence, out of going for the opponent's mid-section and hitting him so hard and getting delight in the attack itself. Is that a winning proposition for a presidential candidate?

Hardly.

Newt might win the progressive liberal vote..... He will not and cannot win the TEA party vote. Something about sitting on a nech with Nancy Pelosi in a global warming commercial comes to mind.

Newt is wasting his time.

Gaffe machine? How about that Obama, there Clarence? Biden? Mathews? Maddow?

Their bubble is shrinking and it is going to make them say and do some pretty strange things as time goes on.

Might I coin a new phrased nick?

There they go, pulling another Charlie Sheen.

That an individual right exists requires that some policy positions be removed from the table of debate.

Gingrich is a true long shot for 2012

Submitted by Galvanic on Thu, 03/03/2011 - 3:38pm.

He's is an extremely intelligent and knowledgeable guy.  Much of what he says is inciteful and strategic.

But he is, afterall, a Washington insider and a part of the GOP Elite, even though he's been on the fringe of the elite for awhile.   He will try to bring in more Republicans regardless of type -- including what folks on this site refer to as RINOs -- to get the comfortable majority he needs in the Senate.

He doesn't embrace the Tea Partiers -- he wants to coerce their loyalty without changing the GOP Elite.   Tea Parties are wary of this kind of manipulation, and won't support him.

He's still the arch-enemy of the Dems and many of the independents, who pounded on him in the mid-90s (much as they did Palin recently), and they'll rerun that game play should he gain any momentum.

I doubt that Gringrich's candidacy would run much past the first half-dozen primaries.

I agree with your assessment

Submitted by Beukeboom on Thu, 03/03/2011 - 4:10pm.

I agree with your assessment and feel that Gingrich's chances would be exceedingly slim to none. He possibly would make an impact initially and if he plays his hand well he might end up with a cabinet post in a Republican Presidency. He does bring some targets from his days as Speaker of th House that the libs in the media and in politics will take aim at immediately if not sooner if he announces he will run for POTUS.

Regardless of the reasons

Submitted by Beukeboom on Fri, 03/04/2011 - 10:37am.

Regardless of the reasons folks feel that Gingrich can't win I think his best shot was in the past and he should move on. I really think several of the older potential candidates are like professional athletes who are well past their prime but still try to play the game. And end up embarrassing themselves and hurting their team in the process.

... I watched the entire Prissy Chrissy Hour tonight just to see if he was as whacked out as I used to think he was.  The little girl is getting close to certifiable!

The entire show reminded me of a group of gay boys in a gay bar trashing their perceived enemies in the room.  It was fascinating.  Think back to when you were in the ninth grade and catty girls got together in a corner and trashed another group of girls.

I'm thinking that Crissy is about to totally lose it.  If Obambi is defeated in '12 they will have to put him in a rubber room.

MSNBC has got to see what a joke their entire lineup is becoming.

At least they'll always have

Submitted by Slyrr on Wed, 03/02/2011 - 8:37pm.

At least they'll always have the George Soros/Michael Moore crowd locked down.

Since Obama's election, the Left has become bolder and they're saying what they actually want to do instead of hiding it with lies and half truths.  Finally they admit it - 'Yeah we're communists. Yeah we want to take everything from everyone and then put ourselves in charge of who gets what.  Yeah we want to butcher unborn babies.  Yeah, we want death panels to wipe out old people.  Yeah we want to wipe out Christianity.'

If a Liberal/Democrat politician/media figure wants to put their arms around you, or pat you on the back, all they're doing is looking for a good place to stick a knife.

Tell me, how does this Bozo The Clown continue to get away with his hate spewing crap and name calling while making a ton of money?  I find it difficult to comprehend that Mr. Ed, Tingler, Richie Maddow, Larry The Tool and all the rest of the PMSNBC crew continue to have a forum albeit PMSNBC (that maybe has 7 viewers) and they have to be making a ton of cash.

How does this happen?

An entertaining train wreck

Submitted by JoeP55 on Fri, 03/04/2011 - 4:31am.

Matthews is just nuts!  I can't believe I still watch his show, but I just can't help it!

Maybe I watch it to see the occasions where someone like Pat Buchanan stymies him with a good reply and then I see him move to the next subject quickly since he's got no rebuttal.  Recently he mentioned a phrase that was uttered one time by what's-her-name in Nevada about second amendment remedies, and he made it sound like that was one of her major talking points.  Buchanan quickly pointed out that she had made that comment once and that Matthews had repeated it a thousand times.  Guess what?  Matthews had no reply.

Matthews in years past had some good solid debates with Republicans.  That has now morphed into bush-league set-ups where Matthews ends up accusing the Republican of something completely untrue and ends the segment without giving the interviewee a chance to state his case.  Really juvenile journalism going on with him nowadays.

And Beck and Hannity do much the same thing over at Fox that the MSNBC evening anchors are doing.  Fox oughtta get rid of Beck; he's just an embarrassment to Fox.  But Beck somehow is getting profitable ratings, so I guess he ain't going anwhere anytime soon.

Newt would make the perfect

Submitted by Miss_Me_Yet on Fri, 03/04/2011 - 11:14am.

Newt would make the perfect vice - president. He's more of a behind the scenes, brains of the operation, make things happen, make sure nobody hookwinks the president kind of guy.

Another Dick Cheney, sort of. Dick and Newt both love this country, warts and all, only unlike Dick, Newt thinks he has higher than VP ambitions. I think with the right front man Newt would be receptive to being the ' man behind the curtain ', in a good way though...not like George Soros with his hand up Barack's ____ , or-castrating his every move.

Liberals ... we can't live with them, they couldn't survive without us ...
