NBC's Vieira: It's Been a 'Rough Week' for the Republicans

Pivoting off the Chris Lee resignation story NBC's Meredith Vieira, on Friday's Today show, declared it was a "rough week for the Republicans" noting that "they've seen several of their bills defeated in the House." Vieira, who was joined by David Gregory, also questioned "How big of a setback is this for the party?" Gregory, for his part, did at least acknowledge the reason some of the bills were defeated was because freshmen Republicans were actually keeping to their campaign promises but then went on to note the GOP had "a lot more cohesion" when they were in the minority.

The following segment was aired on the February 11 Today show:

MEREDITH VIEIRA: Ann, thank you very much. David Gregory is the moderator of Meet the Press. Good morning to you David.

DAVID GREGORY: Good morning.

VIEIRA: It has been a rough, rough week for the Republicans, to say the very least. Besides the resignation of Congressman Lee, they've seen several of their bills defeated in the House, where they now hold the majority. How big of a setback is this for the party? And what do they do to get back on solid ground here?

GREGORY: Well I think the roughest part of it is that they made a promise in the course of the election to cut $100 billion of non-discretionary spending, a part of the budget that, that is away from the big four like defense spending and Medicare and Social Security. And then they came in and said, "Well, we are not going to be able to keep that pledge." And there were a lot of reasons why, none of which were flying with their own members. So a lot of these freshmen Republicans came in and said, "Wait a minute. We made a promise. We gotta keep the promise." They've had to adjust and make those adjustments very publicly as well as dealing with the controversy like this. So it just shows you that they have a lot more cohesion on the campaign trail and in the minority than in they did in the majority.

VIEIRA: So what do they do, at this point, going forward?

GREGORY: Well they have gone back. Speaker Boehner and other leaders have gone back and said, "Well we will get to $100 billion figure, but it's gonna be painful." That's really the issue here. How painful are those cuts going be and can they possibly get agreement on the Senate side to do it? So we're gonna be set here for a big battle over the budget. And that's the budget going forward. What they're talking about is the budget just for the rest of this fiscal year. It gets complicated, the budget math of Washington. But what it means is the fights are gonna be even more intense than we had thought and, oh, yeah, there is also this huge fight looming over raising the budget ceiling, the debt ceiling for the country because we're gonna need more money.

VIEIRA: Yeah also David, by this time in the last election cycle we'd already seen several candidates announcing that they were running for president. We've seen no one so far. Why do you think that is?

GREGORY: I think it's related, in this way. A lot of Republicans who are shaping up this 2012 field are hanging back a little bit. They want to see how some of these fights play out between the Tea Party faction in the House and other new members of Congress and see how that jockeying goes. Because they know that this populist strain of the Republican Party is going to a big part of the primary fight for them. That's reason number one. Reason number two, you get out too early, you become a declared candidate, even a front runner, you become a target. And in this media environment I think they want to hold back on that.

VIEIRA: Alright David Gregory, as always, thank you very much.

GREGORY: Thanks, Meredith.

Tough Week?

Submitted by tvhall on Fri, 02/11/2011 - 2:49pm.

No! First the rep who was in the wrong - had an epithiny and did the right thing.  Lost battles on the floor of the House are not a bad thing.  Any war (and I use that word advisedely) will have advances and retreats, wins and losses.  It is the consistency (of right values and effort) that will ultimately triumph.

We should not lose heart because all of the cheer leaders (the main scream media)are on the other side!

I hate to admit it, but...

I have to agree with Gregory about the hanging-back thing and if you declare yourself a candidate you become a target!  The question I have for DG is "Just who do you think is going to make the declared candidate 'A TARGET?'"

the MSM is having a fit not knowing.....

Submitted by dirtydan64 on Sat, 02/12/2011 - 12:22am.

Whose running so they can target them immediately without warning and in a typical election year theres usually a handful of candidates by now out on the trail and it's eating the MSM from the inside out cause they don't want to come off looking like a starved Polar Bear who hasn't eaten in a coup,e of months looking for it's prey !!! I as well as many who follow Politics are loving every minute as the days go by without some front runner out there in the open for the MSM to go on the attack life is just so grand !!!!

Networks need to replace

Submitted by MaximusBraveheart on Fri, 02/11/2011 - 2:59pm.

Networks need to replace these hosts with conservatives so we can bare to watch them more than 5 min. at a time.

"No brains... all progressive."  Is that there new media slogan?  Not going to watch it!  A conservative would present BOTH sides since conservatives can actually DEFEND their ideas!  Libs can't, so they can only spew pure progressive BS which intend to hide to confuse any facts.

Media Fantasy Land.

Submitted by Ashrak on Fri, 02/11/2011 - 4:02pm.

I went for a drive hoping for some fresh air and caught Rush talking a bit. He was speaking about how the Establishment party bosses might have thought that the Freshman this year were going to be like every other Freshman class. That they would come in on fire, have their necks stepped on by the Establishment boot about "how things work around Washington" and then simply fall into line as in every other past Congress.

He spoke about the learning that is taking place by the old bulls, that the youngbloods aren't just there for show and that they have no intention of just assimilating to business as usual.

I think Rush is exactly right on the money on this point. The GOP is finding out that the folks really meant business in this last election cycle and they are waking up to the reality of a "new normal". They are realizing that we out here is serfdom land have had enough just as the Egyptian people have had enough. They are understanding, like the King of Jordan, that the time for concrete action is now - or action they do not want to be responsible for will come to pass.

The lamestream media can continue to ignore it, they can live in Obamawonderland all they like, the GOP has figured out that we do not believe the MSM anymore and if they capitulate to them - they will be tossed out of office on their hind ends come 2012. As much as the MSM wants to believe that the Mall is immune to what just took place in Egypt, We The People know how close it really is. I think the Establishment GOP is finally getting that message as well.

That an individual right exists requires that some policy positions be removed from the table of debate.

What kind of transportation does one need to get to the reality that the media is living in and what are the celestial directions to the la la planet the media is on. They have to be in a alternate reality that the only portal to this reality is the TV.

This administration that the media slobber over daily has put America in a total mess. It will take time and much effort to get everything back on track by the new leaders in Congress. Veira and all her followers will be shocked when we get back to what America stands for. The constant negative talk is only making people look to conservatives for doing the right thing. Even the operah is saying we shouldn't be so negative toward obama so, she must realize, he presidency is failing .

Meredith, the point isn't whether the bills passed...

The point is having it on record who voted against them.

With respect to the

Submitted by dirtydan64 on Sat, 02/12/2011 - 12:39am.

Budget the MSM should be thankful Congress is actually providing a Budget and actual Y taking the time to wirte one that is responsible and great consideration is taken good bad or otherwise with respect to who gets what and how much. The days of just allowing a department to submit a budget and allow it to pass on thru without a second though is also gone as long as we have responsible members of Congress such as Tea Party Members who came there with a vision to correct the wrongs of past sessions of Congress who robbed and pilliaged The American People for far too long. Now on another note on the 2011-2012 budget, The Republicans should come right out and tell The American People that it's going to be nearly impossible to attain e goal of cutting a $100 Billion out of the balance of the 2011 budget as there's already the 1st quarter gone and were well into the 2nd quarter already so how much is left of this fiscal year and to actually cut $100 Billion from this fiscal year would truly be a heartship for a lot of Americans. whereas Congress should after maki g that known should go full force at the following fiscal year of 2012 head on and cut the $100 Billion and then some to make up for some of what they were unable to whack from the fiscal year 2011. doing this would help to restore there faith with the American People and allow the New Members as well as the old rank & file to show there being honest with everyone and there. Not Bsing anyone or trying to pull the wool over everyone's eyes and will go along way with e Tax Payers in knowing there really trying their best and we as Tax Payers shouldn't expect to get everythi g we want but we should get dam close to the goals set by Speaker Boehner !!!
