Meredith Vieira on Seeing Sarah Palin with a Gun: 'Makes Me Nervous'
The Today show cast, on Tuesday, previewed a guest appearance by reality show star Kate Gosselin on Sarah Palin's TLC show, and after showing a clip of the former Alaska Governor frightening the celebrity mother of eight kids by firing off a gun, Vieira revealed she shared Gosselin's fears as she yelped: "You're with a woman with a gun. The whole thing makes me nervous, you know?"
The following is the full segment as it was aired on the December 7 Today show:
(video after the jump)
MEREDITH VIEIRA: So what happens when the Momma Grizzly meets Momma Gosselin?
MATT LAUER: Well the world is gonna find out this weekend when Sarah Palin welcomes Kate Gosselin and her eight kids to Alaska for a guest appearance on her TLC show Sarah Palin's Alaska. Take a look.
(Begin clip)
SARAH PALIN: How would you like to go camping with Kate and her eight kids?
KATE GOSSELIN: I have never camped for real.
PALIN: Our ruggedness is really a mystery to people in the lower 48.
[Palin shoots gun]
GOSSELIN: Holy!
UNIDENTIFIED MAN: You're gonna have a high population of bears. It's gonna go.
PALIN: She's gonna rely on me to protect her.
GOSSELIN: I am freezing to the bone.
PALIN: C'mon. It wasn't that bad.
(End clip)
VIEIRA: Yeah I don't think Kate took to-
NATALIE MORALES: Roughing it?
VIEIRA: Yeah, no.LAUER: You don't think she's the roughing it type?
VIEIRA: I don't think she likes it.
AL ROKER: Roughing it to her is a Holiday Inn without cable.
VIEIRA: Plus you're with a woman with a gun. The whole thing makes me nervous, you know?
ROKER: Yeah, there's that.
LAUER: Alright.
MORALES: It'll get good ratings, I'm sure.
VIEIRA: Oh I'm sure...
ROKER: Oh please!
VIEIRA: I think that, that Sarah Palin's daughter Piper, is a big fan of Kate Plus 8, as well.
MORALES: Yeah she is.
VIEIRA: So it's nice, yeah.

These modern day sissies (like our Henry Clay) would die within days if lost in a forest or if, magically, they were transported back in time (not all that long ago) or place to when catching critters was how everyone lived (or died). Not so the Palins of the world. No wonder our 'elites' have such contempt for farmers, hunters, fisherman, they are completely out-skilled.

She feels law abiding citizens shouldn't have guns. I guess that means only criminals should. As for women with guns, I suppose the libs would rather see them as victims than protecting themselves and others.

i guarantee every president prior to Obama was comfortable with firearms in some setting.
The bigger problem here is the feminist thing... i'm sure she didn't say that Slick Willie scared her, or any respectable male with a firearm.
But a WOMAN with a gun?!?!? how scary! Ooooo.
I guess Viera just thinks that women are weak, that if they are assaulted, they deserve it, and that men should be allowed to dominate woman at all costs, because women are too stupid to handle firearms.

Oh wait, she'll never get out in the woods. She'll be like Kate Gosselin who didn't even last a day.
These damn anti-gun dingbats don't get that people live out in wild country who need rifles and/or shotguns(or the occasional high caliber pistol like a .454) to defend themselves against rattlers, bears, feral(wild for libs) hogs, and etc.

The retired sheriff who let me fire it can hit a human silhouette at 400 yards. I saw it and I felt bowel movement. He said with this big grin "I *got* 'im!"
It's about the only kind of pistol weapon that can take down a grizzly....after a few shots. See this story for example, where else but Alaska no less.(might not have been a grizzly from the looks of it, but it's HUGE.)

There was some reality show where they took a people in 4 groups of 2-3 persons each and stuck them in various places in Alaska, just before a winter. One group was a father and his two adult daughters. Another group was three friends form NYC, including one guy with well groomed dreads. The NYC group was originally against guns and they were vegetarians. They changed their minds when they couldn't find the protein their bodies needed. The producers of the show introduced them to a hunter who showed them what they needed to know.

Some moron will inevitably start ragging me about carrying one of my pistols while out and about because, supposedly, I'd never get the chance to draw it in a hold-up to defend myself. My response is that I don't rely on my weapon to be the one to save my life. I rely on that quiet little old lady in the corner pulling her Colt Python out of her purse when the bad guy is looking the other way. (*grin*)
I did try to teach my wife to shoot but when it came to the .44spl and .45 auto she pretty much thought she had a 155 howitzer in her hand so actually aiming at the target while cringing didn't seem to work too well. For her I just recommended screaming and running... preferably at the same time.

Start her off with a .38 so she doesn't freak. Personally, I'm fond of the HK P30. I've found it to be quite accurate, and a 9 mil is easier on a woman's nerves. Glocks are pretty awesome, but the relatively lightweight frame gives it a hell of a recoil. Not for beginners, she'll feel like she's being kicked in the hand.

I regret to admit that she may have more shooting experience than I have. Aside from Boy Scout camp when I was 12 and the occasional bb gun, that's about all I can recall. She might be starting ME off with a .38.
Of course, I was really quite good at Duck Hunt on Nintendo in my youth, and I suspect that kind of skill isn't something you lose with age. Of course when it comes to heavier artillery I must defer, for I rarely finished on the winning end of GoldenEye N64 back in college.

In terms of pistols I'm happy with my S&W .38 (3" barrel). Eventually I would like to get a 2nd pistol possibly a Glock 9mm (what my brother carries on duty and off) or perhaps a 357 revolver. I am happy with my 20 gauge Remington. I have a couple of .22 rifles I use for just for plinking at targets but since I don't deer hunt I don't have anything bigger in terms of a rifle.

Many years ago, my Daddy purchased a little .25 caliber pearl handle chromed semi-auto pistol for my Momma to carry for protection. A pretty little thing but a piece of garbage in terms of usefulness. It didn't exactly fire a round but more SPAT it out. The accuracy of the weapon was dismal outside of a few feet. Suffice to say Momma never used it...she preferred a .38 S&W revolver...and that stupid little .25 is probably still in its case in a drawer somewhere in Momma's house. The only weapon (and I use that term loosely) more useless was a little keychain single-shot derringer novelty gun that shot .22 short ammo that Daddy got for free after purchasing several guns from a dealer back in the 70's.
