Lauer to Lisa Murkowski: Will You Stand Up to Republicans Who Want Obama to Fail?
NBC's Matt Lauer, on Thursday's Today show, invited on Alaskan Senator Lisa Murkowski to applaud her presumptive write-in ballot win over Republican candidate Joe Miller and asked if she would now "stand up against" Republicans "who may feel that the only way for them to succeed" is for Barack Obama to fail. After Lauer went through the perfunctory congratulations, he asked the candidate who failed to win her party's own primary, if she would, essentially, become a thorn in the side of Republicans as seen in the following question:
MATT LAUER: You, you talk about governance based on anger or fear. You're a moderate Republican. You've said that you do not pass the purity test that the Tea Party has set out. You said something else. You said, said "I will tell you I'm not one of those who wants Obama to fail." Will you stand up against other Republicans who may feel that the only way for them to succeed is for the President not to succeed?
Lauer also made sure to note that since Sarah Palin endorsed Joe Miller, Murkowski's victory could also be seen as a diminishment of the former Alaskan Governor's "prestige" and "power," as queried: "There are a lot of other people who are saying you defeated Sarah Palin. She backed Mr. Miller in her home state, put the prestige of her power behind that, that endorsement. How much does this say about her power and impact going forward, in your opinion?"
(video after the break)
The following is the full interview with Murkowski as it was aired on the November 18 Today show:
MATT LAUER: Alaska Senator Lisa M-U-R-K-O-W-S-K-I joins us now from Anchorage. Senator, congratulations - apparently - is that what I should say?
LISA MURKOWSKI: Thank you. Well yes, apparently. Alaskans have learned to spell it, just as you have. Pretty good.
LAUER: Yeah the Division of Elections has not certified this.
MURKOWSKI: Right.
LAUER: They say they will not do that until the 29th of the month. NBC News has declared you the apparent winner. Are you at all concerned, based on all the twists and turns in this campaign and this race so far, that there may be another surprise down the road?
MURKOWSKI: We were waiting for the numbers, and that's what this process has been. It's taken a while, but there were, you know, a couple hundred thousand ballots that were cast and over 100,000 that chose to go the write-in route and so we made sure, here in Alaska, that those ballots were all counted fairly and openly, in a very good process. So it's taken a little bit of, of time but the fact of the matter is the numbers are what they are. And they clearly indicate that Alaskans have not only spoken, they've written it down.
LAUER: You know there were doubters, as you well know. There were people who thought-
MURKOWSKI: Yeah.
LAUER: And I think maybe I was one of those back on September 22nd when you were last on this program and thought maybe you shouldn't do this and couldn't do this. Explain to me, briefly, how did you win?
MURKOWSKI: It was Alaskans coming together. The most phenomenal coalition of Alaskans. This was not a Republican campaign. This was Democrats and Republicans and independents all coming together saying, "This is too important for the future of our state. We're going to take that extra step. We're gonna take that affirmative act and we're going to do something that the rest of the country says we can't do it." It was a challenge for Alaskans and we clearly met it.
LAUER: You know this morning, there are already people who are saying okay you defeated Joe Miller but there are a lot of other people who are saying you defeated Sarah Palin. She backed Mr. Miller in her home state, put the prestige of her power behind that, that endorsement. How much does this say about her power and impact going forward, in your opinion?
MURKOWSKI: Well I, I think it's important to recognize that here, here in Alaska we're, we're looking at Alaska. We are looking at those issues that are important to us. So endorsements from outside, may not have as much pull, as much as stroke, as, as you in the lower 48. This was Alaskans speaking up. And I think what they, what they said was, "We want the, the consensus building" that I bring to the table. "We don't want governance based on, on, on anger or fear. We want governance that comes about when, when people reach across the table. And-
LAUER: Right.
MURKOWSKI: -and try to figure out how we build good policy.
LAUER: You, you talk about governance based on anger or fear.
MURKOWSKI: We have too much to do for these next two years to be focused on who's going to be president or who's going to be leading the Senate in 2012? We have got an obligation to the people of this country to govern. We've got unemployment at 9.5 percent. We have people that are continuing to lose their homes due to foreclosure. We have work to do. That's what the American people want. That's what the people of Alaska have asked for in, in this election, is get to work, whether you're working with the President, whether you're working with the, the Majority Leader-
LAUER: Right.
MURKOWSKI: -or the Speaker, figure it out, Congress.
LAUER: Senator Lisa Murkowski, the apparent winner in Alaska's write-in Senate campaign. Senator, congratulation.
MURKOWSKI: Thank you. It's, it's good to be with you, this morning. Thank you.
LAUER: Alright, nice to have you here.

In fact, I seem to recall a certain *ahem* news organization declaring Al Gore the winner, too. At least in Florida, before the polls were closed.
I hope the lawsuit is huge. The rules were the rules at the time, the election commissions expanded "interpretation" just before the election is questionable, to say the least.
Also, it is somewhat questionable as to whether the military ballots were delivered within the proper time frame, as mandated.
I truly hope this Murkowski witch gets egg on her face for prematurely declaring victory. She, like Charlie Crist, should have stayed fired. I can't believe there were enough stupid people to vote for her to make it this close.

voter fraud plain and simple

It hurts that the Lt. Gov. here in Alaska isn't inforcing the rules of the election. I and thousands of other Alaskans truely believe that nearly 40-50% of Sleza MooCowpoopski's votes were fraud. Without support from the State and the Make-laws-from-the-bench Judges we can do nothing without bringing out a blood bath. Personally, I'm sick to my stomach.
Nothing personal, william

After, not so much....voter intent. Lisa Muksy would probably been evidence of "intent".

This is though clearly a state contest and the feds are not involved. Not like the Presidential races where the contest is USA wide. I do see a problem is as the first article states that the statute says the name must be spelled exact and the officials have let some irregularities through. It depends on what powers the officials have in changing the rules midstream and what the Obama justice system decides. Heaven help us.

To me she is a traitor. Not sure if you are familiar with the bill in the senate to require states to allow public employees to have collective bargaining. That will mean that VA and here in NC there wiil be unions. She is all for it. I hate to see SEIU get any bigger. I really hate her damning the 10th Amendment. The bill is crap.

Miller should use the courts. The media and Democrats want this resolved before the end of the year.
Miller has a good case against Murkowski. Her lead is suspicious. Too many powerful interests want Miller to fail. It all smells manufactured.
Also, spelling should be the most important factor when counting write-in votes. She didn't win he primary and an in a few weeks later she's Alaskan Elvis? She's gone from loser to write-in winner?
What?
Common sense... all is not right in Alaska.
Well, she is the incumbent
Submitted by Galvanic on Thu, 11/18/2010 - 3:10pm.
I'm not ruling out tampering, but it's not as if she was an unknown. She appears to have underestimated the Miller challenge in the primaries, and put on a strong write-in effort. I haven't seen exit-polls from Alaska, but I imagine more than a few Democrats wrote her in to stop Miller.
But if I were Miller, I wouldn't concede until I'd exhausted all my legal avenues.

I don't like how everyone keeps saying the fact that Miller lost somehow reflects poorly on Palin. I mean yeah it's a loss, but it's not like she's any less popular or likable. It's more of a judgment on him, not her. I think she's still very strong within the party. It's a goofy argument to make.
I think Palin responds best on that -

When asked if she took responsibility for the loss of Christine O'Donnell in Delaware, she said (in effect) 'No. I backed the more conservative of the two Republican candidates for the nomination, and I would not have backed her opponent in any case. There's no use in having a Republican voted in if he is going to support Obama's agenda.'
Miller's primary victory is largely credited to her endorsement. She didn't cause him to lose.

Hey Killa37!
Aloha from Honolulu! My voting record turned out exactly like yours! My only voting victory was Tulsi Tamayo (City Council). After the second return I shut off the TV in disgust and tried to go to sleep but couldn't as I was so PO'd. Especially at Chuck Djou's loss. How Hanabusa won is beyond me (other than my usual thoughts of HGEA fraud). I cannot believe the totally lame job the Hawaii GOP did in trying to push their candidates. They NEVER mentioned Abercrombie and Hirono's association with the Democratic Socialist's of America (Hirono is a co-chair for God's sake), or made a TV spot showing Abercrombie in one of his child-like rants while he was in Congress. Very poor, especially as they had some really good up and coming young people running (like Shiraki and Bean on Oahu).
I see Abercrombie has already (even prior to being sworn in) indicated that he is going to ADD more departments to the State government, and is planning victory parties on the major islands after he is sworn in....on the taxpayer's dime of course. Too bad we are so broke tax enforcement agents are being sent to swap meets and farmer's markets to cite and fine mom and pop outfits for not keeping individual records of each and every sale made in real time (while Hanabusa's buddy Jeff Stone got away with those huge tax breaks for the never built aquarium at KoOlina).
I realize that we only have 4 Electorial College votes, but we are already being ignored by the rest of the nation as can be seen by this post at Hot Air....although the Dems won this state by a landslide, We aren't even mentioned when talking about Red States... http://hotair.com/archives/2010/11/17/democrats-becoming-a-two-state-party/
My friends try to cheer me up by saying "now the dems have only themselves to blame when things go south" (as they own the governorship and both chambers of the Legislature), but that brings me no joy, knowing how they will further destroy this great State that I love.
As someone said elsewhere, "I can see Greece from my lanai".
