Introducing Howard Dean, on Wednesday night's "Hardball," Chris Matthews indirectly compared Barack Obama to Jesus Christ as he introduced the former head of the DNC and 2004 presidential candidate as "the man who really laid out the path for Barack Obama. He was the St. John the Baptist...leading for that fellow." In the Christian faith St. John the Baptist is considered to be the precursor to Jesus Christ, so in Matthews' metaphor of Democratic presidential politics that would have to make Obama, Jesus. For his part Dean, justifiably, appeared uncomfortable with the comparison, as he appreciated Matthews' promise to "not make any further reference there to the Deity." After that awkward introduction Matthews, in the ensuing segment, went on to call Republicans like John McCain, Sarah Palin and Mitt Romney "imbeciles" for their various criticisms of Obama, as he continued his "idiot button" routine that he began on Tuesday's show.
The following exchanges were aired on the June 17 edition of "Hardball":

The first are churches that are orthodox, conservative (Catholic, Protestant, Evangelical) that believe in fixed morals and values as prescribed by God and Scripture. They put God's teachings before the ways of men and believe Jesus meant something with His death and resurrection. These are the churches that would be shut down if a Republican politician spoke there.
The second are churches that are heterodox, liberal, that believe morality is individual and fluid, and that God will let everyone into Heaven if they are just "good people" who "believe" in Him (or her, to be inclusive). They put man in the place of God and think Jesus was just some nice, sandal wearing dude. These are the churches that court Democratic politicians to speak there on a regular basis.
The former must stay out of the public sphere at all costs. Anything such as, you know, speaking up for your First Amendment rights is intolerable.
The latter are welcomed in the public sphere. The more the merrier, especially if they disdain and bash their conservative brothers and sisters in the faith.
So when, say, Catholics in Connecticut protest a law that would take away their right to free worship, they are further penalized by the government for "lobbying" (formerly known as peaceable assembly and free speech).
But when the media compare Obama to God, it's all good.
