Matthews Berates 'Jealous, Little, Phony' GOP for 'Pathetic Swipe' at Obama Trip

Chris Matthews, on Monday's "Hardball," was outraged at the RNC's criticism of the Obamas wasting taxpayer money to go see a Broadway play as he railed that it was a "jealous, pathetic swipe at the First Couple," and remarked "What a jealous, little political party the Republicans have become." Matthews also took a shot at former President George W. Bush as he contrasted Obama's tastes with Bush's as he claimed the problem he and others had with Bush was his, "Utter disdain for any kind of thought or culture. His total lack of curiosity toward anything beyond his own backyard." Matthews then questioned if the GOP attack was made out of "jealousy or simple nincompoop anti-intellectualism?"

MATTHEWS: Well let's get this straight. President Bush's jaunts to Crawford, Texas were okay by their lights, but President Obama's day trips to New York are cause for outrage? This is the kind of pissant criticism that makes you wonder why Michael Steele still has his job. Is this jealousy or simple nincompoop anti-intellectualism? Whatever it is I like having a president who takes his wife up to Broadway. [audio available here]

The following are all of Matthews' teasers and then his anti-RNC rant as it occurred during the "Sideshow," segment of his June 1, edition of "Hardball":

Story Continues Below Ad ↓

CHRIS MATTHEWS: And what's wrong with dinner and a Broadway show? Well when it comes to Barack and Michelle Obama just ask the Republicans. Here's the front page of today's New York Post. We'll have the GOP's jealous, pathetic swipe at the First Couple in the "Hardball Sideshow tonight."

...

MATTHEWS: Up next President and Mrs. Obama go to New York and take in a show but the Republicans don't seem to like it. They're raining on their little parade. They go up for one day and this phony outrage. Next in the "Sideshow." What a jealous, little political party the Republicans have become. You're watching "Hardball," only on MSNBC.

...

MATTHEWS: Back to "Hardball." Time for the "Sideshow." I don't think the Republicans get it yet. The problem many of us had with President Bush was not that he was any less intelligent than most presidents or certainly not most journalists. God gave him brains. It was his utter disdain, George Bush's utter disdain for any kind of thought or culture. His total lack of curiosity toward anything beyond his own backyard. Now here goes the Republican Party that should have learned a lesson from this experience, taking a cheap shot at what the voters chose last November, a President – excuse me for saying this – with interests. You can see Michelle and Barack Obama there returning from their night out at in the Big Apple on Saturday night. The First Couple dined at the West Village's Blue Hill restaurant and took in a Broadway show, Joe Turner's Come and Gone, about black-America in the early 20th century. The President was making good on a campaign promise, that's how he put it, the one that he made to his wife. One that Republicans were all too ready to pounce on. The day after Obama's dream date to New York the Republican National Committee put out this e-mail. "Putting On A Show," they called it. Calling out the Obamas for jetting away at taxpayer's expense. An RNC spokesman piled on adding, quote, "If President Obama wants to go to the theater, isn't the presidential box at the Kennedy Center good enough?" Well let's get this straight.

Matthews Missing The Obvious Once Again

Is this the best that the self appointed Minister of Truth in President Obama's propaganda machine can do?  After the Obama's go on this date, President Obama then has the audacity to tell Americans that sacrifices need to be made by them.  My wife and I are not going to the movies and will be spending our weekends at home mostly to save money.  So yes, this is rank hypocrisy by Matthews and our President.

Obama leads by example.

Obama leads by example. Every taxpayer should have a cool $75,000.000 for a date paid for by the people.

"DumbAssity of Dope"

Soooo

Never be deterred by the rants of your (4 ever) enemies...

Are the democrats ever deterred? Maybe 2% of the time...lesson learned.

Speak truth loudly and daily to the voters...lib-media rants are part of the game.

Voters will notice our enemies never refute truth...they only rant, topic shift and smear...

Matthews is an arrogant...

elitist ass...If President Bush had done something like what the Obama's did over the weekend, he would have been crucified!

Matthews thinks that President Bush has an "utter disdain for any kind of thought or culture. His total lack of curiosity toward anything beyond his own backyard." What a load of BS...The truth is is that Matthews doesn't approve of or understand that Bush just has different interests than Matthews does, which of course makes Bush's interests wrong, and for that, Matthews hates him..It's that simple.

Matthews and the rest if his ilk can't stand Bush because of his "everyman" quality...Bush was not into the beltway cocktail party scene, and those like Matthews resented him deeply for that...Bush was happy to pretty much confine his socializing to his real friends, most of whom were from Texas, which to the elitist snobs like Matthews, is akin to Hell.

Most Americans don't have the wherewithal to jet up to NY for dinner and play, even if they wanted to. Sure, a nice meal and a broadway play is a nice way to spend an evening, but not if you have to get there on the taxpayer's dime...Of course, to Chris Matthews, it's perfectly okay, if you're Obamessiah.

You hit the nail on the head here.

I am so past sick of the msm and their double-dealing standards...all of them.

I want a Fairness Doctrine too...I want to get rid of msnbc...oh wait a minute...I do...I rarely go there...for good reason, to keep my TV in one piece...lol.

Howdy bt...Right back at cha!

My thoughts exactly!

I tell you what, if it weren't for NB to keep me up on the pathetic goings on over at MSNBC, I'd never know what they do or say...I just can't watch that absurd circus of theirs...Like you, I value my TV too much! LOL!

Sky... It's hard enough

Sky...

It's hard enough just looking at their mugs here...let alone listening, to the videos that I can get through that is....too many years of watching these brain-dead leftists with their agenda...and they are worse now...never satisfied.

In the meanwhile O-Team are working hard behind the scenes to ensure that they get as many as illegal votes as possible, and we cannot forget about the Census being in the WH and their control either.

On and on it goes...Panthers at the polling places, ACORN working and double time along with sister groups, all at our tax dollars expense.

Spooky what the future looks like right now...and I'm usually an optimistic person....it just ain't looking so great on down the road from my view-finder.

bt...I'm with ya...

It is a discouragingly bleak picture...All I can think of and hope for, is that all of this corruption and these abuses will eventually reach critical mass, and will hopefully blow up in their faces...Like you, I'm essentially an optimist, so hope springs eternal...

Matthews thinks that

Matthews thinks that President Bush has an "utter disdain for any kind of thought or culture. His total lack of curiosity toward anything beyond his own backyard."

Prairie, I was going to say the same thing.

Matthews slap at a President who's not even in office any more is not a pathetic little rant?

The guy doesn't recognize hypocrisy when it climbs up on his lap and calls him "Papa."

He's really thinking "we finally have a President who has some taste for the "good life" and these peons don't appreciate him.

BTW, Chrissie, did you check out what play they went to see???

Even their entertainment has to be "culturally appropriate" and "politically correct."

No white- boy musicals for the Obamas, nosirree!

I didn't think it was physically possible, but this both sucks and blows.  -Bart Simpson

Double Standard Crissy?

Mr. Mathews, do you take us all for idiots? Did you or did you not constantly attack Bush for his trips? Why do all of the rules suddenly change once your guys gets the office?

motherb...Exactly! Matthews can't recognize...

his own hypocrisy because he is immersed in it, and lives surrounded by it...To him, it's like the air he breathes...

I guess us "peons" just don't understand the "good life," as you perfectly put it...Poor us...

"anti-intellectual" really

"anti-intellectual" really gets under their skin, doesn't it? It's simply a disgusting trait of little minds like Mathews -- it's one of the few ways they think they can "look down" on the "little people". And it drives Mathews nuts when people thumb their noses at him. To Mathews, if we aren't impressed by the "intellectuals", it simply shows we are not sufficiently under his control --- and he simply can't stand that. So he breaks down and rants, revealing his true, bitter, and out-of-control personality.

Chris Matthews is cockily swaggering around like a bully right now. It won't be long before he's staggering under the load of trying to defend the indefensible.

No doubt the news desk was

No doubt the news desk was flooded with the rabid spittle produced by another of Chrissy's precious, contrived rages.  The Obamas have once again shown the arrogance and indifference that made Caligula, Marie Antoinette and Nero so popular.

I think Chrissy is a bad mood because Brian got to see Obama eat M&Ms.

I love it when Chrissy gets so pissy....

Don't you just know that

Don't you just know that when they get to the third floor of the WH, the Obamas laugh their heads off at useful idiots like Matthews bowing and scraping for them?

The "Mainstream" Media: By liberals. For liberals.

What a pathetic little

What a pathetic little looser Crissy is. I know that they do this stuff to rile up the conservatives and I tell you what it is working for me. If I saw that femmey little puss walking down the street it would be worth some time in jail just to knock that smug look off his face. There is nothing I loath more at this time then the major network news.

Chrissy

I seriously doubt the President Bush went to Crawford Texas for a 4 hour "Date".

Obama and the Dems. Pulverized the Auto Execs. for flying their company jets to Washington for hearings which was for business purposes.

Obama goes to New York City for a "Date" that cost the U.S. taxpayers $100, 000s of dollars on the weekend before GM, one of the very same companies that were railed against, file for bankruptcy. This is absolute insensitivity and totally ludicrous.

I have no problem with the First Couple going on a date anywhere, but if they are going to fly somewhere for a date, conduct some business for a day or so, then have the long distance date somewhere in the vicinity. Better yet, stay in Washington, I'm sure there are many wonderful venues for dinner and a date in the Nation's Capitol that would be thrilled to have them visit.

24 thousand dollar date night

and we shall eat cake.

A part of this shrubber

A part of this shrubber says "what's the big deal? We all bristled when douchey lefties peed themselves every time Bush when to his ranch. Matthews is no different than many of us".

Then another part of this shrubber says "well, the Messiah did tell all of us that we all need to make sacrifices, apparently He is exempt."

Then another part of this shrubber says "Wait a minute. Matthews is excusing The Messiah for doing exactly what Matthews hated Bush for doing. That is rather hypocrtical of him..."

Matthews invoked the First Rule of Liberalism: Accuse the Right of doing exactly what the Left does.

...and childishly smear it

...and childishly smear it in our faces. No one does hypocrisy as big and out there as Matthews. He revels in it. It's like a corollary to the Big Lie - if you're going to be hypocritical - do it loud. Like, "My guy's in office, so nah-nah-nah-nah-nah".

By the way, I'm not that upset about this "date" as some others. I just marvel at the nerve and phoniness of so obvious of an attempt to recreate the so-called "Camelot" of the Kennedys. I guess next we'll see pictures of the Obamas playing touch football and sailing.

The "Mainstream" Media: By liberals. For liberals.

Chris...You got it...

Matthews is a master at hypocrisy...He calls the Repub's outrage at Obama's taxpayer funded "personal fun" trip to NYC "pathetic"? He is what is pathetic here, along with the network that he works for... He should be thankful for MSNBC, because without it, there would be nowhere for him to spout his crap...I don't think even CNN would want him, he is so unhinged...Matthews would likely wind up blogging for HuffPo or Kos...

How big?

I don't suppose anyone has bothered to calculate Obama's carbon footprint for this little jaunt?

kareling...Excellent point!

I haven't seen anyone address that aspect of "O's" little weekend jaunt yet...I wonder what would be "President Green's" defense of his trip from that perspective?

I Just Sent An E-Mail to Mr. Matthews

He's clueless.  The "jealous GOP" is the least of President Obama's problems with regard to his taxpayer-funded date.  It's the taxpayers, stupid. It's not about the date itself.  Who cares if the president and his wife go out for an evening?  I certainly don't, unless I'm paying for it.

I'm sure he'll e-mail me back quickly, but I won't hold my breath.

I swear, these newspeople who love to make fun of the GOP and try to diminish them are only diminishing those of us who lean republican.  Of course, Mr. Matthews apparently has money so he has no idea how the taxpayers feel about this obvious flaunting by the Obamas.

In the words of Mad magazine...blechhhhh!

You wanna know what pisses me off the most about Chrissy? She used to be fairly reasonable. But something has caused her to go off the deep end in the last few years. Okay, it might have been the last ten years, since that's the last time I watched her, but still...

I went to the Reagan library a couple of weeks ago to see the Magna Carta and in the bookstore there, whose do you think was the only book by a liberal in the whole place? Chrissy's. It made me want to puke.

Give him a break Dane

Intolerance vs Tolerance

I suspect that President George W. Bush and his wife might have liked to go to a city for dinner and a theater sometime during his administration, but most inner cities are extremely far-left and they would not have tolerated the presence of President George W. Bush. Liberal tolerance is only for others like themselves.

On the other hand, the Bamster could go into the most Republican city in America and be welcomed and respected, because that is the nature of conservatives.

Sad that liberals that profess to be tolerant are the least so.

Economic crisis? 1)  Are

Economic crisis?

1)  Are we in one and the president doesn't know it?

2)  Are we in one and the president knows and doesn't give a rats arse when it comes to these types of outtings?

3)  Are we not in one?

The little obama worshippers like Chrissy can compare all they want to Bush on this one.  Totally different arguement, made so by the massively different economic conditions.

Hey, I'm all for Obama tax

Hey, I'm all for Obama tax the rich thing. Let's tax the Alcholic, Micks ass 100%. Matthews will still have a tingle in his daddy parts for the savior though because he knows its only on the "little people".

This dribble-mouthed moron

This dribble-mouthed moron lost all credibility with his sexual arousal by Obammy's masculine, finely toned body curves, lean and sculpted legs, chisled pectoral muscles and six-pack regularly firmed up by repeated caughing up smokers phlegm between drags off his Marlboros.

My disgust of this round mound of sound is exceeded only by my sympathy for his poor wife for the humiliation she must be feeling by his man-love affair.

Obama is a menace

to America and Chrissy thinks it's okay for the pompous Obamas to do anything they want.

I don't know how much more of the liberal charade I can take.

Matthews embodies the elitist stereotype he rails against

He says the GOP are petty and small minded?

Talk about the pot calling the kettle black....

He thinks anyone who doesn't attend Broadway plays in New York has 'utter disdain for culture'?  What about him and his ilk slamming any and everyone who doesn't live in NYC or in Los Angeles?

These fools have such utter contempt for the average American it disgusts me.  So in the twisted mind of Matthews, only hoity-toity people who think Broadway is 'culture' are the intelligent ones?

If I didn't know that Obama was going to take over MSNBC and all it's parent/sibling networks and make them his tax-funded puppet/slaves, I'd rejoice at the day when Matthews and his pathetic network inevitably fall...

Rise up on 2010 people!  The Black Panther incident is just a fore-runner of what they'll try to do in the next election cycle to keep themselves in power.  Don't be intimidated - take courage - take back your country before it's too late!  And in the meantime, keep protesting and snowing every corrupt congressman/representative with emails, protests, teabags etc. as you can.  We have to keep the pressure on them or  they'll think they've won and keep ignoring us...

He's just jealous

Doubling down on stupid is not a particularly good idea. ~Andrew Breitbart

Had GWB, or any Republican

Had GWB, or any Republican president, done the same thing on the eve of the bankruptcy of what was once America's largest corporation--a symbol of its industrial might--the press and Democrats would have had a field day with it.  We would never hear the end of the "insensitivity" of the move.  What the Republicans did in this instance pales in comparison to what would have happened if the shoe were on the other foot.

The most successful war America has ever waged is quickly becoming President Obama's war on capitalism.

How dare those Republicans

How dare those Republicans criticize The One for jetting to New York for date night?  No one ever critiqued what a Republican administration spent - unless you count:

Nancy Reagan's china

Nancy Reagan's designer gowns

George Bush's inauguration

John McCain's houses

Sarah Palin's outfits

As for George Bush not leaving his back yard - could it be because he didn't want to waste money and inconvenience thousands of people so he could have a single self-indulgent night on the town

Why wouldn't he defend Obama?

Matthews has already gone on national tv and stated in no uncertain terms that it is his job to make sure that president Obama is a success.  He made no apologies for the statement - in fact, he was full of arrogance at the time, saying it with a humorless "we won so FU" expression on his face - and confirmed his credo when challenged by an amazed and perhaps disgusted Joe Scarborough.

This is Matthews' mission in life (ever since Jan 08 in fact): Defend Obama at all costs.  Smear his critics (as "racists", if at all possible).

Anyway, Matthews has absolutely nothing to do with the profession known as journalism and he knows it at his point.  He simply goes on night after night and panders to the DailyKos/AirAmerica crowd and the people who voted Obama in the Dem primary and the general simply because he was black.

this is such a blatant double standard,

and a perfect illustration of why viewers are bolting en masse to fnc.

swing hard in case you hit it.

I can't even watch the clips of this phony bag of vomit

Maybe "Dr." Hern can do an abortion on Chris Matthews since the rest of his commentary and show is basically an  abortion of decent journalistic ethics and values.

"Let him who would move the world, first move himself." -Socrates

"We sit together, the mountain and I, until only the mountain remains." -Li Po

...

Matthews is either just a liar, ignorant, disingenuous or all of the above.  His idiotic charge that President Bush was not curious is just false.  Someone who reads a book a week on many subjects, especially history, does not have a total "lack of curiosity" or is "anti-intellectual."  Just because going to a Broadway show wasn't his thing doesn't make him anti-intellectual.  This elitist windbag is utterly deplorable and despicable.

If moving your offices west for a couple of weeks is your idea of a vacation, I'd hate to have your job.  And by the way, I don't remember Bush blowing tens of thousands of our dollars to take his wife out on a frivolous "date" to a restaurant and Broadway show (on a whim, no less)...without the slightest consideration given to all the people he was inconveniencing in the process (you know, the stopped traffic, the theatre-goers who had to wait an extra hour before their show started...did President Caligula stop to think that some of these people might have had dinner reservations, baby-sitters or other after-show obligations to take care of?  Of course not.)

"Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance, and the gospel of envy, its inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery." -Winston Churchill

I don't suppose Chrissy

I don't suppose Chrissy stopped to think that thousands of people (perhaps millions) that don't even watch Fox News and are not registered GOP were pissed off about this when they heard it.

You know, real people without jobs, those that still have jobs wondering if they will keep them and trying to make ends meet?

Liberals are full of crap.

Liberals are full of crap.  I thought they liked Obama for being an elitist.  Weren't the lefties glad a "dimwit texan hick" was being replaced by their "sophisticated, well spoken, cultured" multiracial embodiment of the lefts intellectual, cultural, and ideological superiority?

Isn't he the limousine liberals darling?  The guy that can talk about fine wines, theater, art.  The guy that mingles with the "talented" people of the world... you know... artists... Hollywood.  Wasn't he the guy that those sophisticated and elitist europeans that are better than us would respect?    Weren't they touting that "france is our friend" again?

But now it seems like the MSM and his advisors are trying to portray him as the "average joe" with "average joe" tastes.  Haven't you noticed how they made a big deal about his trips to a burger joint and his consumption of M&Ms?  "It's like he's one of us!"  hyuk!

Give me a break.  This is the guy that took a day trip to Broadway in order to catch some live theater.
