Newsweek's Jonathan Alter Slams Sarah Palin as 'So Lame'

On Thursday night's "Hardball," Chris Matthews played several clips from documentarian John Zeigler's interview with Sarah Palin, in which the former GOP VP candidate criticized Katie Couric and the press as a whole for bias against her but his guest, Newsweek columnist Jonathan Alter, dismissed Palin's charges as "So lame," and called her "a Nixonian Nanook of the North."

The following exchanges were aired on the January 8, edition of "Hardball":

First up, after Matthews aired a clip of Palin criticizing the McCain campaign for forcing her to conduct continuing interviews with Couric, Alter called the Alaskan governor: "So lame."

CHRIS MATTHEWS: There ought to be a law against politicians blaming their handlers. What do you think Jonathan?

JONATHAN ALTER, NEWSWEEK: Yeah this was just so lame, Chris. I mean why didn't it go well the first day? It wasn't because Katie Couric was asking awful questions. Her questions were very straight, no spin on the ball. The problem was Sarah Palin couldn't answer the questions in a way that showed the knowledge that is required to be Vice President and quite possibly President. So if she had decided not to go back for the rest of the interview she would have been conceding that she simply wasn't qualified to be Vice President if she couldn't answer Katie's questions.

Then after a clip of Palin wondering if Caroline Kennedy would get better coverage in her quest for the New York Senate seat because of a "class issue," Alter insulted Palin as acting like a "Nixonian Nanook of the North."

ALTER: Chris you wrote the book on Kennedy and Nixon. You know this is Sarah Palin acting kind of like a Nixonian Nanook of the North. She's trying to play that class argument against the Kennedys. That goes back a long way. It's had some success in American politics. But you know this, at this point it's kind of comparing apples and oranges. She was on the threshold of becoming Vice President and possibly President. Caroline Kennedy hasn't even been, you know, chosen yet for the U.S. Senate, as one of 100. So you know the standards in covering them aren't quite comparable. Not to mention the fact that Caroline's had a pretty tough press so far. She has hardly been handled by kid gloves in the last couple weeks.

MATTHEWS: You're right.

Finally right before the close of the show, Alter denied Palin's claim of liberal bias that she would've positive coverage if she was on the Democratic ticket:

MATTHEWS: Jon, Jon would she have gotten better treatment had she been on the "D" ticket instead of the "R" ticket?

ALTER: Well first of all, first of all Chris she never would've been on the Democratic ticket. I mean John McCain said that the first requirement for his pick was that, that person be qualified to step in at a moment's notice and deal with terrorism and all the big international issues. So he violated his own standards. That was also Barack Obama's standard for who he would put on the ticket and he chose somebody with, with the requisite experience. But if she had been – the, the subtext of this is that somehow the Democratic candidates are treated better by the press. Ask Bill Clinton the way he was treated, you know, by the press. I mean it's just not true.

MATTHEWS: Okay, ask Jimmy Carter.

ALTER: Jimmy Carter! Yeah.

MATTHEWS: Anyway. Ask Jimmy Carter, he got a terrible press.

Ironic, isn't it, that

Ironic, isn't it, that Alter said, "Caroline Kennedy hasn't even been, you know, chosen yet..."?

Freudian slip, or just, you know, habits of the linguistically lazy?

As for Carter, he got as favorable press as the MSM could manage.  Problem was, he's a boob.  Watch for a repeat as Duh1 continually steps on his own equipment over the next four years.

Matthews and Alter aren't important to anybody...it gets tiring with the likes of these critters regarding anything they say.

Well, for me anyway, I can't take much more of Matthews....I quit watching his show since the election, he seems to be here still all the time...dang it all anyway.

Oh well, I'll move on.

I say, let Alter keep printing his little proaganda pamphlet and we'll keep not reading it. Let Matthews keep airing his valentines to Obama hour and we'll keep not watching it.

A Thought Experiment

Is Katie Couric qualified to be Vice President?

  • After all, she asked questions of Sarah Palin that measured whether Palin was qualified.
  • That implies that Katie Couric knows the qualifications to be Vice President.
  • And since Katie decided that Palin answers were unfit, Katie must know what the right answers are.

Logically, for Katie Couric to know whether Palin gave the correct answers, we'd have to presume that Katie Couric knew them herself. If she was administering a VP test, she must have the answer sheet.

That whole scenario is a crock, of course. The idea that she couldn't answer The VP Questions is based on the myth that the media knows what the qualifications are, and they know the right answers. Instead, these interviews simply amount to the media's vague surface impressions that she isn't qualified, and this is a pseudo-proof to justify their behavior.

The media has anointed themselves to judge qualifications for office. Don't you feel safer?

Nothing like those unfair questions

It was an obvious setup, Katie knew Palin would not be able to answer what newspaper she reads.

Sarah Palin Can't Name a Newspaper She Reads (Video)

Carbon Dioxide (CO2) is Not Pollution

Interesting

You misconstrue the question.

Couric: And when it comes to establishing your worldview, I was curious, what newspapers and magazines did you regularly read before you were tapped for this to stay informed and to understand the world?

Tell me, do you get your worldview from the media? If so, how sad.

More to the point, do you read just one media source? You obviously read NewsBusters. You watch/read CBS. Chances are, if you're like the rest of us, you jump from website to website. I'll bet your browser has a list of favorites, and I'd be willing to bet one of the folders is News, and maybe a dozen hyperlinks within, right? (I have confidence because most people have something like that.) And then someone asks you to name the media sources that form your worldview, your first reaction would not be to select any one of them, right? Or even any two or three. Because most likely, you're just like the rest of us ... all of the media sources float into a vague subconscious pool of "media." Well, guess how Palin actually answered:

Palin: I've read most of them, again with a great appreciation for the press, for the media.

Palin simply said what most of us do in reality. But that wasn't enough for Katie.

Couric: What, specifically?

If you think about it, this was the "when did you stop beating your wife" part. Couric turned the question into search for a single media outlet. But that's unfair, because no one reads news from just one source, certainly not since the internet came along. Here's how Palin answered, clearly frustrated that she didn't know what Couric was driving at:

Palin: Um, all of them, any of them that have been in front of me all these years.
Couric: Can you name a few?
Palin: I have a vast variety of sources where we get our news, too.

Now here's the catch. You and I, in the middle of that same quizzing, would have simply named a couple newspapers. At random. New York Times. Wall Street Journal. Philadelphia Inquirer (for me). But we would have been doing to just to get Katie off our back. If she wants the name of one newspaper, give her one to shut her up. These newspapers didn't form our worldview. We would have named them just to move the conversation along.

Wait, however. Admit it - that's Monday morning quarterbacking. We only think that (after the fact) because we recognized that Palin looked foolish for not being able to come up with the name of a newspaper. But on reflection, I certainly wouldn't have realized that Couric would use this to make me look foolish. Like Palin, I would have been bewildered (and embarrassed for Couric) about what she was driving at -- because I didn't share her assumption that the media forms my worldview. But that's different from saying I don't read newspapers. Couric is the ignorant one here, because her question presumed that Palin must have formed her worldview from newspapers ... and is that true for anyone?

____

But one more thing. Think of what your conclusion is. Even though Palin answered that she read a lot of media outlets, the fact that she didn't name one specifically ... from that, you conclude that it proves she doesn't read?????

How fair is that?

Yeah...remember when

Remember when Katie was the "dumb" one?

Was? "Government's view

Was?

Don't blame me....I voted for Palin...

Oh, please Chrissy.  If

Oh, please Chrissy.  If Carter got terrible press, it was only because he was a dreadful President.  And Jimmy Carter didn't get terrible press.  He was such a dangerous and inept buffoon that his failure superceded the fawning press that he received.  Through gritted teeth, some media eventually had the slightest bit of courage to admit that Carter was a total failure.  The revisionist history presented by one of his former hacks now in the media will not change the fact that Carter was the worst President ever, and a slimeball, to boot.

As for Clinton, there was more self-righteous finger wagging from the Press trying to play down his shortcomings than even the Slickster could manage in semi-retirement.

The Press has got to keep denying it all.

Can anyone remember a tough interview with Obama?  I can remember 2 points, in the whole campaign, where he was challenged, one was the debate when Gibson and Stephanopolous went after him and the 2nd was O'Reilly, who was only given 30 minutes.  Just imagine O'Reilly with a day and a half.  Just imagine Major Garrett having as much time with Obama as Gibson or Couric had with Palin!!!

The only one hammering the MSM is Ann Coulter.  She got her points in, on Matt Lauer the other day, but who was awake to see it.

I guess they all figure that the victors get to write the history, so this will all be forgotten.  Well, it will only be forgotten if Obama isn't as naive as he appears to be, but we won't know until he does something unexplainable, then we'll look at the press and try to find out why they never bothered to ask him what he'd do in certain situations, but they just had to find out from Sarah Palin.

This election, the press was just a big joke, and they still are.

Election 2008-God's way of showing us that elections count.

I have to wonder if this

I have to wonder if this is an example of the bad press treatment Chris was referring to?

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-srv/national/longterm/inaug/history/stories/carter77.htm

And remember, Chris Matthews is the one who famously gave us the Carter Malaise Speech, So Totally Lame! Fer Shure, Dude!!!

Reading it

sure made me want to vomit.

Two other interviews come

Two other interviews come to mind:

Bill O'Reilly and Barack Obama-Bill had him hemming and hawing (more than usual) with some of his questions.  Tough, but Bill used humor and obviously was not condescending, and ended the interview on a cheerful note-he was not "out to get" Obama.

Diane West and Joe Biden-She nailed Biden big time.  Not being prepared to answer direct, uncomfortable questions left Biden having to come back with "is this some kind of joke" and "who wrote these questions?".

Both of these interviews showed what kinds of interviews Obama and Biden should have been getting. Oh, and say what you will about O'Reilly (nobody's perfect) he really handled the Wyrd Sisters on The View well and pointed out the obvious differences between the way they treated The One vs. McCain.

Personally, I couldn't care less what magazines Palin nor Obama or anybody else reads unless it's along the lines of Communist Worker's Home Journal.

Also, Couric showed nothing but disgust and loathing and Gibson displayed an obvious condescending expression.

One of the 24% who thinks George W. Bush was a great President. One of the 89% who wants to bring back the stock and pillory.

Jonathon Alter, yea right,

Jonathon Alter, yea right, give me a break. Alter dumps on Palin constantly because just by looking at this baffoon you know he was the dweeb in high school who couldn't get near the girls that resembled a Sarah Palin. He most likely got his butt kicked regularly by the boyfriends of these girls because he'd follow them around like little cousin pervy, then go into the bathroom stall and....well you know.

Palin: Damned if she did, damned if she didn't.

Let's say, if Palin had refused to continue the Couric interview, she'd had been damned for "going rogue".

These people have nothing to do with news, they're propagandists.

Palin is a class act, these newsclowns are classless, while feeling they are superior to Sarah.  Pathetic.

The Two Biggest

Tools in "journalism" trying to cover up the obvious bias.  Why would they defend only Dems if they weren't Dems themselves?  They must think we're as stupid as they are.  Negligent in their work for the cause of liberalism, how proud their parents must be.

Palin´s latest rant is just BEYOND, BEYOND…
Complaints, whining, placing blame at Obama´s feet instead of thanking
him for sticking up for the privacy of her children. Which he DID
emphatically, he even threatened to fire anyone from his team who
contributed to Palin gossip. Then MORE Bitching about the ferocious
Katie Couric for asking WHAT DO U READ and the dreaded NAME ONE SUPREME
COURT DECISION- Complaining about Tina Fey when HELLO SARAH…YOU WERE ON
THAT SHOW WITH FEY! Then she throws a DIVISIVE monkey wrench in the mix
and says Caroline Kennedy will get a better time of it because of

been getting a free pass from media , they have been comparing her to
    YOU, Sarah!
