Sarah Palin on 'Today': Katie Couric 'A Little Annoying'

On Wednesday's "Today" show, Matt Lauer played a portion of his interview with Sarah Palin in Alaska where he asked Palin if his former "Today" co-anchor, Katie Couric, was "unfair," during her pre-election interview, to which Palin responded she found some of the questions, "a little bit annoying."

The following exchange was aired on the November 12, edition of the "Today" show (audio available here):

MATT LAUER: More now of our interview with Alaska's Governor Sarah Palin. Virtually unknown before John McCain picked her as his running mate, Palin founder herself under an intense media spotlight. I asked Governor Palin about one of her first interviews during the campaign with Katie Couric, where she stumbled over a number of questions. And I asked her if seeing the clips from that interview, hurt her confidence.

[On screen headline: "Did Couric Interview Shake Her Confidence?"]

SARAH PALIN: No, no, because, you know I'm sure that some of my impatience showed through in that, in that interview. I think it also showed, though, that certainly as a Washington outsider and as somebody not, not one to just, I guess, kind of play even the, the campaigning media game that is played in, in just repeating, perhaps, memorized lines in an, in an interview, that's not me.

LAUER: But you didn't think the interview was unfair? I mean, the questions were fairly straight forward, weren't they?

Story Continues Below Ad ↓

PALIN: Well sure, yeah. But you know questions about well, "You know what do you read up there in Alaska?" To me that was kind, a little bit annoying because I'm like, "You know what do you mean what do I read up in Alaska? I read the same things that you guys read in New York and there in L.A. and in Washington state. What do you mean, what do I read up there?" But anyway, just, just some annoyance that certainly showed through and, you know, perhaps that, that annoyance that showed through would have led some to be annoyed with me, watching the interview. And that's understandable.

LAUER: Were you treated any differently by the McCain advisers after that interview? Did they, did they look at you differently at all in terms of your qualifications to be the Vice President?

PALIN: I don't think so. And, and certainly based on one interview, I, I think that they are, they were much more expert and professional to allow just one interview to, perhaps, lose confidence or faith in me, as John McCain's pick.

You idiot!!!! The questions were moronic and meant to trip her up. She is right, the questions were annoying and inane.

so that was a tough interview?

how about the interview o'reilly had of obama. argumentative, putting words in obama's mouth, accusatory, repeatedly interrupting.

watch THAT interview, then tell me palin was treated unfairly. bah.

yeah, some of the questions were simple (you call moronic) and palin flunked out. perhaps you know palin intimately, but others did not. the interview was very informative for not only what palin said, but what she stumbled on and some of the lame answers.

annoying? palin, you wouldn't have lasted 30 seconds in the o'reilly-obama interview. an interview which obama handled very well. to think that palin thought she was in the same league of people to hold the same office, is at best a laugh.

palin tripped over herself (she needed no help), and was instrumental in the failure of the conservative ticket.

I can understand that. I've

I can understand that. I've noticed when a Republican comes from a "hick" area like the South, Midwest, etc.--they're stupid yokels. However, when a Democrat (Clinton) comes from one of those areas, he's just awesome--like all of a sudden he isn't a "hick".

Although, I'd think they'd call you a hick even if you're from the "cool" states like (CA, NY, and MA). They'd just find some county in those states that they can refer to remotely as hick-ish.

Is it just me or that the Democrats almost always portray themselves as the racist/bigoted, ignorant, yokels that they project onto Republicans? You know, like Senator Byrd?

Keep in mind...

Libs are stuck on their idealism and theories.  So, Sarah is a hick because she didn't go to an ivy league school, she has "real world" experience, and is "successful."  All things that libs hate.  Clinton was a Rhodes Scholar and protested... um, attended at Oxford.  The Obamas are "Hawvad" types (a place, frankly, comprised mostly of rich brats and affirmative action recruits).  Neither did anything worth a squat in their careers before POTUS.  Clinton failed miserably in Arkansas; Obama, well, he just hasn't done anything but "community organize."

Bush attended Yale, but they threw the "drunk with bad grades" at him.

Libs are steadfast in their beliefs in this failed educational system.  But hey, they created it.

MSM = Lions Den

Sarah needs to realize that these people are fighting to get her on their show because they do not want to wait another two or three years to finish her off.  They see her as a viable threat in 2012 and will continue to attack her relentlessly.  It does her absolutely no good to give them opportunities to belittle and disparriage her.  She cannot let down her guard because their war on her isn't over!  They will pursue her destruction until the job is done!  Even if she succeeded at making some good points they will be edited out in exchange for the sound bytes that can be manipulated to make her sound bad.  If she is going to insist on doing this liberal media tour she needs to hire some campaign people to help her navigate these shark infested waters.  I believe her faith in people to be decent and fair will cause her to sustain some very avoidable battle damage.  She needs someone like a Dick Morris or a Karl Rove who know how this dirty game is played to prep her for these appearances.  Can't play in the lions den without expecting to be bit.

I find "alternative" media more liberal than the Mainstream Media.

The voters decide

"...the media are behaving like new lottery winners.  They've realized the

So, NBC invites Sarah Palin on the Today Show in order to address some of the criticisms of her during her recent campain with Senator McCain.  I can't see how that makes the media cocky.  Would you expect Joe Biden to be treated with kid gloves by Sean Hannity?  I respect Governor Palin for speaking for herself and think that her responses were reasonable.  While it is your perception that the media's wishes were met by Senator Obama's successful Presidential campaign, keep in mind that it was a high voter turnout by Democrats and a majority of swing voters who turned the tide for the Obama/Biden ticket.

And yet she contradicts that notion a couple of second earlier with one of her standard, repeated lines. I'm not interpreting; that's what she said.

Actually, I have to admit,

I agree Restless 1

Every time I hear her speak ( in an un-scripted way) it takes me a few seconds to grasp what she is saying. This is because the McCain handlers did not properly prepare her for the media onlsaught that would occur. Sarah has a lot of good ideas, she is just so new to the national scene to express herself without second guessing what will hurt the "campaign". Truth is, I wish Sarah was running as Pres, we need that kind of person in the white house.

Don't get me wrong CT

I'm not saying that it was Palin's idea to reference the term maverick over and over and over... McCain was not the best choice to start with, and his campaign organizers were atrocious. I definitely look forward to Palin learning from this and I think she will be well armed to come out fighting in 2012, should she decide to run.

I do agree with BT though. If she is found wanting on illegal immigration, I will be a tough sell. Living in Texas, I appreciate a strong stance on illegal immigration.

I'm still researching her stance on II myself. I know she agreed with McCain on some points, but that agreement seemed half-hearted to me. I have not found anything from before the campaign, but there may not be much. I don't imagine there are many illegal Mexicans in Alaska, so I doubt she has had occasion to say or do much on the subject. I'll be interested to hear what she says on her own, and not while tied to McCain.

McCain was and IS a Good Man

"...No more candy ass country club republicans running the show. They have singlehandedly destroyed the party that I called my own....."

I don't think that many share your opinion that McCain has been "candy ass" in anything he has done in his life.  He fought a good campaign, but he and the Republican party didn't have what the majority wanted at this particular time.  Too much baggage associated with the Bush administration to overcome.  McCain made a good argument for why he should be president, but it is obvious that the party base remembered '04 and the way that he distanced himself from the Republican Party insiders.  Regardless, McCain is truly one of the good guys in politics, and had he won, I think that our country would have benefitted from his leadership.  I'll differ from majority opinion on this blog in that Palin does not have the mental horsepower for the job and would be a huge mistake as a choice for '12.

Tell these disingenuous ***tards, like Lauer and Couric, off! They'll hate you for it (they already do) - but the people who have and would vote for you will respect you even more. There's nothing to be gained here by giving them cover for their grotesque bias. We know you're not whining - just giving back as good as you got.

Lauer asking Palin if Couric's questions were "fair' gets me even more angry than the extremely unfair "gotcha!" questions who the media reserve exclusively for Republican candidates. It's like a smiling mugger asking his victim, laying on the sidewalk, "How do you feel, we were fair to you in our assault and theft, weren't we?" We need Republicans who are as brash and brazen as the left when it comes to the media.  If Couric or one of those other useless mainstream meatsacks gets snarky - put them in their place and call them on it every single time!

One thing I took away from all of this, is that the media played all of its cards.  If Palin is as bright as we all know she is, she'll spend the next 4 years sharpening her knives for the next round of negative mediagasms, and eviscerate them.

When Couric asked Sarah what

When Couric asked Sarah what she reads up there in Alaska, I'm sure she took it as an "idiot" question. That's why she was a little tongue-tied when it was asked. If someone asked me something that stupid, I would have been taken aback by it. Of course, I would have then asked Couric what she read in her neck of the woods. Answering a question with a question may have been the better move.

Nonetheless, the media has been HORRIBLE to Sarah Palin, and I wish she'd get a little more direct in her answers with these reptiles and jackals. If she told them all off, she could run for President in 2012 and win!

What Palin did never seemed to be of interest...

reason #342 that I like Sarah.

Palin interviews

Why is the media having interviews with Palin now? Sure, the McCain camp no longer controlls her, but I mean the Media could ignore her.  Unless...she is a ratings draw for them??

The media saw all those massive crowds she drew at rallies and they know she will be back in 2012.

Here's hoping we will have our own media by then!

Sarah should have told

Sarah should have told Katie: "We don't read in Alaska, Katie, because I banned all the books, remember?"

Ultimate media candidate

There may have been instances during the campaign where media figures were patronizing to Palin or asked questions that could be defined, by some criteria, as "unfair." But none of that changes what was abundantly evident: Palin was ignorant in matters so basic that she had no business running on a national ticket.

Ironically, people here are complaining about the media's treatment of the ultimate media candidate: looks, style, and a compelling personal story, but little of the intellectual grounding needed for the position she sought. Maybe she'll mature somewhat over the next four years, particularly if she get's Stevens' Senate position. But surely conservatives should be seeking out a compelling, undeniably well-qualified 2012 candidate rather than pretending that Palin has more substance than she has demonstrated to date.

Palin 2012

but little of the intellectual grounding needed for the position she sought. Change the she to he and we're talking about obama?

See, I liked what I saw in Gov. Palins tract record, taking on members of her own party.  I liked how she infused our party; how she never backed down from her possitions. I could care less about how she handled herself in an interview (interviews that were designed to trap..I wonder how obama would have handled tough interviews??

The Sarah Doll is always more interesting to play with

This is amusing watching the liberal children at play.

Barack Obama was their catharsis, the enema, their vomit purge for all the naughty racist things they thought, did and laughed at in their Letterman Cocktail crowd parties.

Once one vomits, purges or defecates, the liberal children look at that pile and don't want to play with it as it is icky to them and represents all their icky past.

As each day passes the pretty Sarah doll in her Alaskan house is more interesting to play with and the former ill rage these liberals were infected with becomes a mania not for political rape but one of obsession to make the Sarah doll mine.

Matt Lauer is in love with Sarah Palin. Meredith V is still hateful as all the liberal males want Sarah and no one wants boobs in the face liberal women.
Eventually this hatred in a Stockholm Syndrome mania will turn and all these former hateful liberal women joining in on the gang rape of the good girl will become her defenders and her best friends.

About the time the Obama vomit starts to stink as he sinks America is the time the liberals will all be claiming they never voted for him or David Letterman will have some liberal on television looking thoughtful saying again, "I guess he just wasn't ready to do the job".

Hey Dave, your policy this time when New York burns and Obama vaporizes bushels of Muslims.

Obama fades each day and Sarah Palin shines brighter each moment by God's Grace.

I admit it...

I don't watch MSM news so I did not see Palin on Couric's show and based on the liberal lady's lousy ratings not many other people watched her show either.  If a tree falls in the forest and no one's around to hear it, does it make a sound?  Yes, if it is on tape and is played over and over again on shows that we do watch, like those on Fox.  Jim Webster

Not a Silly Question

The question was Not "What you read up there in Alaska"... This was the question verbatim:

"When it comes to establishing your world view, I was curious - What newspapers and magazines did you regularly read before you were tapped for this to staying informed and to understand the world?"

This is not a silly question. Palin had stated in prior interview to Couric that she keeps informed via Media... and in this interview, Couric followed it up with asking her this question.

It is very common to ask questions like: What are your favorite books, favorite authors, people that inspire you, etc. I see this question as completely legitimate and relevant... and Palin should have seen it coming from the prior interview as a follow-up.

kathy... Then why didn't

kathy...

Then why didn't she just ask... "What are your favorite books, favorite authors, people that inspire you"?

I know exactly what you mean. I don't have the time or the stomach to play very long with liberal trolls.

BTW... I thought we agreed on 'buddy', not "my friend"? ;-)

I hope I never have to hear that again.

Good night BT.

I'm glad things worked out for Clyde. At least you got to enjoy him for a time, and now he is back with his family. A happy ending.

C'mon BT

It is getting on to Christmas and you did pull the string on the Chatty Kathy doll.

kathy, if it is such a good question ...

Hmmm - I never heard Couric (or anyone else) ask other candidates to list what newspapers and magazines they read to establish their world view - in this election or previous elections.

The Axis of Taxes: Obama, Pelosi and Reid (source unknown)

Something like 80% of

Something like 80% of communication is body language.  One could argue that Gov. Palin took Katie's question and responded to the in-between the lines implications that Katie was asking.

Watching the interview between Katie and Gov. Palin, I heard the same thing..."what do you read up there in Alaska" even though reading the transcript I see that isn't want she asked.

Now if we could rewind, Palin should of said something like, "I read more than what is given to me on a teleprompter"

Not entirely true

" Obama, well, he just hasn't done anything but "community organize." "

He did campaign.
