On the 5pm edition of Thursday night's "Hardball," Chris Matthews ventured out into the crowd of students on hand for tonight's vice presidential debate at Washington University to see what they were looking for in a candidate. When one student responded: "I'd like a display of knowledge and expertise." Matthews interjected: "So you're on the Obama side, right?"
Matthews then asked a different student, in an apparent shot at Sarah Palin, if a "candidate for Vice President should be able to get into Washington University?"
The following exchanges occurred on the October 2, edition of "Hardball:"
CHRIS MATTHEWS TO STUDENT: What are you looking for tonight?
UNIDENTIFIED STUDENT: I'd like, I'd like a display of knowledge and expertise.
MATTHEWS: So you're on the Obama side, right?
[APPLAUSE]

MATTHEWS TO DIFFERENT STUDENT: Do you think the Vice President of the United States, the candidate for Vice President should be able to get into Washington University?

October 2, 2008 - 18:29 ET by tonemeisteri know that everyone will hate me for saying this . actually, i'm just verbalizing what many of you are feeling ...that the forces arrayed against mcain-palin are too powerful to win a fair election. the old media, euro-liberals,domestic closet-case socialists, are coming out of the woodwork. after keeping there heads down after 9-11, they feel it's safe to come out...this is from someone who used to argue for reagan-bush to his (and god love'em) new deal democrat grandfather. let osama give us change we can't afford.he's the jimmah' carter of the 21'st century .bad enough, to give these young bucks a taste of true incompetance and humiliation.after and through the prism of history,the screw-ups of carter gave us the reagan years. it's just a question of time and, the hope that this scorch-mark doesn't damage the country too much...(obama-chavez singing x-mas carols from the white house would be too much)....t

October 2, 2008 - 18:56 ET by MindwerkzIt scares me more than a little watching the polls that I dont know how McCain can win. I realize there is a likely 6% artificial bump because obama is black. I realize that there is a disproportionate amount of dems vs repubs in the polls. I realize that 30% of dems wont vote for obama because hes black, and a good number of hillary supporters wont either. However knowing all of that, I scares the crap out of me that a terrorist loving marxist is the smart bet for the white house.
I wouldnt be quite as concerned if not for the fact that we need someone strong on foreign relations to counter the marxist bloc forming and the very likely looming war with Israel. Add in the fact that we have the heads of the house and senate that we do, and in all likelihood they will both have a supermajority able to pass whatever extreme marxist, racist, and oppressive laws they want.
Im terrified, I really am. Someone please show me a likely situation that has McCain, whom I dont even like, get elected... Im really not kidding, please show me.

They told us Kerry was leading in the polls, they told us he was leading in the EXIT polls. They told us Gore was leading in the polls. They announced that Gore had won before the polls had even closed in CA.
Dont believe the polls. Just get out and vote. The youth vote likes to give props out to their dem pol but they dont actually show up to vote.

CNN's after debate poll showed Biden 51 to Palin's 36. I heard nothing but negativity. The full press is on now, to bring out more liberal women to bash on Sarah. They want you to feel depressed and hopeless.
Good point about the MSM tactics of demoralizing the opposition. Prove them wrong! They'd be more than happy to have you, me and every other non-liberal stay at home and not vote. Hey, if they can round up fifty homeless drunks, triple register out of state college students, we have to get out and cast our vote.
If we lose, it won't be because we didn't try. I'm kinda liking this, the whole world is against us. In VA and NY, the teachers unions are mobilizing their followers to wear Obama buttons to school, or dress up in blue to show their support to the One. It's like, let's lead the young ones down the blue bridge.
Don't let your vote be suppressed by the influence of the MSM, that's their game plan!

October 3, 2008 - 05:14 ET by tonemeisteryou really don't need to turn up the sound this morning on the tv to know sarah did pretty well in the debate. many glum faces on the various and sundry msm commentators. absolutely vote. we can't stay home and let there be anything that looks like a mandate. actually close poll numbers are bad for obama.he knows what people will say in public about there're choice so they don't look like racists might not translate into real numbers in the secrecy of the voting booth. let it be close. so if osama wins we can claim for the next four years that there was voter fraud etc. let them have the same garbage that was heaped (wrongfully) on george bush. a decent man who, because he's human, wasn't right all the time and got hammered starting the day after he was sworn in.....t
