On Tuesday night's "Hardball," Chris Matthews wondered if Michigan Governor Jennifer Granholm, "an Ivy League grad" and "genius," was really a good choice to play the role of Sarah Palin in Joe Biden's debate prep. During a segment with Democratic consultant Nancy Skinner, who is prepping Granholm, the "Hardball" host implied the "Harvard Law" graduate may not be the best "fit" to play the Republican vice presidential nominee:
She's a genius. You think she is, in, in her manner, in her background and she's born in Canada. How does she sort of fit the role of Sarah Palin? Why is she a good sparring partner to play that role?
A little later in the segment Matthews painted Palin as empty-headed as he worried the "neo-conservatives" would "home-school" her in the "ideology of the right," like they did to Dan Quayle and George W. Bush.
The following exchanges occurred on the September 30 edition of "Hardball":
CHRIS MATTHEWS: Joining me now is Democratic consultant Nancy Skinner, who helped prep Jennifer Granholm, the Michigan governor, who is playing Sarah Palin in Joe Biden's debate prep. What an interesting role you're playing. Also with us MSNBC political analyst Pat Buchanan. Nancy, tell me why you think Governor Granholm, who's what, an Ivy League grad law? What? Didn't she go to Harvard Law or something? She's a genius. You think she is, in, in her manner, in her background and she's born in Canada. How does she sort of fit the role of Sarah Palin? Why is she a good sparring partner to play that role?
...
PAT BUCHANAN: Let her own philosophy, her own personality come through. Let her be, Sarah be Sarah. If she loses then you lose, but you don't lose on somebody else's game-plan.
MATTHEWS: Pat, you have forgotten the nature of a neo-conservative. They find these-
BUCHANAN: She's not a neo-conservative!
MATTHEWS: No, no!
BUCHANAN: Yeah.
MATTHEWS: The people briefing her are, in this home-schooling exercise that's going on. It's just like they did with Quayle or George W. Bush. They get a newcomer who hasn't had a lot of book learning in the ideology of the right, and they teach them the right words. You don't think that's going on right now? Randy Scheunemann is not filling her with that ideology right now?

Why not Victoria (whatever...the ditzy blonde from SNL)? Maybe in a swimsuit, for effect.
I swear, there is not one little teeny tiny thing that is beneath these leftists in bashing Sarah Palin.
I hope the Governor comes out in her biggest, baddest heels, power suit (or whatever makes her feel invincible), ready to slay the dragons. That's what I'd do.
I'm really looking forward to Thursday evening.

Thursday's debate
September 30, 2008 - 23:08 ET by merlin61Is Sarah Palin going to be given a fair chance in
this debate? Gwen Ifill is publishing an Obama
book that's coming out on Inauguration Day. She
sounds like a very self-opinionated person who
is already prejudiced as to who she's going to
favor in this debate. For more info see
World Net Daily from today.
In the Age of Obama
October 1, 2008 - 05:50 ET by ThisnThatHer book is "Breakthru Politics and Race in the Age of Obama". Age of Obama? What the hell is that????
Think she's going to make a profit if Obama wins? Any profit if Obama loses? Think she has a stake in the outcome of this election? I say yes -- she does have a stake, and yes -- this will affect her approach to Thursday's debate.
Does anyone think the MSM would stay silent if a McCain backer moderated a debate, and had a pending book that would make a lot of money if McCain won? Right.
And here's her statement to her claim to fame: In the 2004 VP debate when Cheney asked for more than 30 seconds to react to a particular statement from Edwards, Ifill told him "Well, that's all you've got". Ifill said that though it was not her intent, Democratic partisans were delighted with her because she was seen as being "snippy" to Cheney. Yep -- she's proud of that, and she will be looking for a similar opportunity on Thursday.

It is probably too late to change moderators, though a replacement wouldn't necessarily be better, but a cautionary word from the sponsers may help keep Ifil only slightly left of center.

Michigan Governor Jennifer Granholm A Genius?
September 30, 2008 - 17:45 ET by PamA genius? She is the worst goernor in the history of this state. She isn't actively pursuing any jobs unless the unions get a cut so I guess that explains the 8.1% unemployment.

September 30, 2008 - 17:56 ET by bigtimerPam,
I can't even see how she is going to survive this election...she is up for reelection isn't she?
I am hoping people are so angry with her that they come out in huge numbers in Michigan just to vote against her alone, then vote a straight repub ticket.
Of course I do realize that there is a huge amount of cheating in Michigan too with the dems when it comes to the elections...
Speaking of cheating, anybody hear or see this about Ohio and what a Judge went ahead and okay'd today...

September 30, 2008 - 18:35 ET by SeashellJulia Kramer, 19, a Case Western Reserve University freshman from New York City and an Obama volunteer, was second in line. She said she's been working on campus to register out-of-state students to change their registrations to Ohio because of its critical role in the election.
Nevertheless, "A lot of people are really attached to their hometowns," Kramer said. "It's hard to explain to people that your vote (in New York) won't count as much."
This is incredible.

October 1, 2008 - 10:55 ET by JTPShe is term limited out (thank God). Though 2 more years to go with her "running" this state. I run a business in MI and fortunately most of my customers are out of state or I and my employees would be voting for Obambi to get our slice of the government pie. I was at a fund raiser the other day with our Secretary of State Candice Miller. She WILL be the next Governor of MI. It can't come soon enough. As for Granholm being a genius... Compared to Chrissy I can see where he gets his frame of reference.

September 30, 2008 - 18:57 ET by Secret ConservativeI was hoping someone would point out what a miserable failure Jennifer Granholm is as Governor of Michigan. Once again it demonstrates that the libs in Detroit will vote for ANYTHING if it has a D after its name. I also suspect that Granholm will play dumb in the prep, because all the Dems think that Sarah is dumb. That's just good for Sarah, because it gives Biden a false sense of security. But fine, let her pretend to be Sarah Palin - it's the closest Granholm will ever get to being in a VP or Presidential debate...

Two Penny Jenny is a what?
September 30, 2008 - 18:04 ET by XBOLTSChris Mathews thinks Granholm is a genius? Gee Zuz, Mathews has the bar set mighty low for the term "genius".
I've heard her called alot of things but genius wasn't one of them. I'm from Michigan, emphasis on from. I owned a business there for 16 years.........Now I live in Alabama and I am amazed at the difference from blue state to red state.
Ever wonder why blue states are going bust while red states seem to be prospering?
I asked that question to one of my northern buddies, he started mumbling about the federal government dumping money into the red states. He's right but most of those dollars are in Matching Funds. Red states are building roads, blue states are filling potholes.
Unless the sparing partner
September 30, 2008 - 18:13 ET by BuffNBoneUnless the sparing partner has a bona fide faith-based understanding that she is using to help prep Biden, I doubt she'll do an adequate job.
Plus there are several factors in Palin's favor:
Biden seems to love his own voice which lessens his ability to listen to others. The result is at times he can be incoherent. Its not the B.S. he says, its the manure with which he says it.
She's the real deal who doesn't have to make things up or remember what she's said.
She seeks and acknowledges God's influence in her life.
Many people have been, and are, praying for her.
Buchanan's advice seems to be the best, "Let Sarah be Sarah" hopefully her handler's won't screw it up.
"Fighters are fun but bombers make policy"
Things will change
September 30, 2008 - 18:19 ET by pbthinkerAfter Thursday night, things are going to change. Either Gov. Palin will hold her own and look good, or she'll look like the charicatures the left is putting out about her.
No one could give the speech she did, at the convention, and be an airhead. Obama couldn't have given that speech, if his life depended on it.
It seems that, the people that know her claim she's being mishandled, just let her do her own thing. Well, I'm not sure I agree or disagree but it can't do much harm.
Does anyone notice that most of the soundbites, being used against her, are not Sarah Palin but Tina Fey. What does that say? She can't really be doing that poorly if they can't come up with something original.

September 30, 2008 - 18:35 ET by Chris Norman"She can't really be doing that poorly if they can't come up with something original"
I think they're dispicably trying to turn her into a caricature like they did (or tried to do) to Katharine Harris.

Yeah, Chris...but it may backfire
September 30, 2008 - 19:02 ET by BlondeIf the MsM has succeeded in turning Gov. Palin into a caricature, a la Tina Fey....haven't they de facto lowered the expectations?
So when the Governor blows them all away, she's totally outperformed expectations.
Sheesh....I've got to stop, I'm beginning to sound like one of the chattering talking heads on the idiot box.
Forgive me.

Sarah Palin is a college
September 30, 2008 - 18:39 ET by deerjerkydaveSarah Palin is a college graduate but these liberals treat her like she's a high school drop out. It is criminal the way these liberal "journalists" pass themselves off as unbiased.
Why is it that the states in this nation with the worst economies are run by liberal politicians? This is an angle you never hear from the MSM because they're biased and lazy. If Governor Jennifer Granholm is such a genius, why is her state at or near the bottom in the nation? If you ask her, 100% of the blame goes to President Bush. Righhhhhhhhhhht.

Too funny. I had a friend at work who had lipliner and eyeliner permanently tatooed on. It always looked great. The downside was, though, when she had the flu, she still looked good. No one believed she felt like crap, and expected her to continue to perform at 110%.
