During MSNBC's live coverage of the Democratic National Convention, on Monday night, Newsweek's Howard Fineman pronounced that Michelle Obama, in her opening night speech, had "dug herself, beautifully and completely, out of the hole she put herself in...when she said her husband's success was the first time she was proud of her country."
Fineman made the following declaration at 12:03am [EDT] on the Monday, August 25 (to Tuesday morning August 26) coverage of the Democratic Convention:
HOWARD FINEMAN: I think Michelle Obama dug herself, beautifully and completely, out of the hole she put herself in, with the people paying attention, when she said her husband's success was the first time she was proud of her country. I think a lot of the speech that she gave, and it was a beautifully controlled speech here, Chris, in the hall, you could hear a pin drop. It was beautifully done because she didn't overdo it. She was classy all the way, she was humble. She told the story of her family in the way that left no doubt, in the minds of the people who watched and listened, that her story was indeed the story of the American dream. But it was a speech, in part, made necessary by some of the controversy that she generated earlier on with some of her comments. She overcame them beautifully.

Tue, 08/26/2008 - 03:02 ET by mastersofdeceitThis is a nice tidbit and all.
But you NB people have your work already cut out for you. You know I love you guys but if you're going to try to document every Pro-Obama statement by the Pro-Dem media, it will be futile
Sheesh, have you seen CNNs ticker? So far I've learned:
"Michelle Obama rescued the night"
"Obama a spectator as Michelle takes center stage"
From Hilary Rosen: "Michelle hits it out of the park"
"Given her personal story, the Republicans won't suceed in future
attacks on her patriotism. This woman beamed her pride in her American
opportunity. Women can relate to her modern struggle of caring for her
children and constantly worrying about their future."
*snicker*
"Kennedy hits a high note"
And the most pressing question of the night:
"Where have they been hiding Craig Robinson?"- David Gergen
When I read it I of course thought " who the hell is Craig Robinson?"
Apparently "Craig Robinson, Michelle's brother, has helped to put things back on
track. His basketball analogies about Barack Obama was some of the best
validation we have heard about the candidate in this campaign."
Well that seals the deal for me. Craig's basketball analogies are the best validation I've heard. I will now vote for Obama.
What's that Wiper's album?
You better MOD

Rule #1 of getting out of
Tue, 08/26/2008 - 06:18 ET by USA4freedomRule #1 of getting out of the hole you have gotten yourself into.
Stop digging. (notice, you haven’t seen her around much making speeches)
The bigger point here is: That she ( has) to make this type of speech!
I bet any of the readers on News Busters would never have to make this speech. A speech to prove, that you love this great country. That you come from humble beginnings and have done well with the work and sweat from your own labors. That you believe in the inherit greatness of this country.
We don’t have to make that speech. I believe it in our hearts. It showes.

Tue, 08/26/2008 - 08:39 ET by dscottOn the technical merits she acquited herself well. IMO, it took a huge amount of control on both her part and that of her handlers, it seems the Dems have finally figured out that everyone is watching so they can't be themselves until AFTER the election.

The real story
Tue, 08/26/2008 - 07:23 ET by Cool ArrowThe real story is that Fineman mentioned Michelle's problem statement at all.
It was all there. Michelle gives the speech, and Fineman brings up her earlier anti-American comment.
Of course he didn't have to proclaim it's just like it never happened, but only the already devoted believe this anyway.

Tue, 08/26/2008 - 07:55 ET by USA4freedomI wonder, will he get a bump after the convention.
If not the MSM will just crap in their pants.

She missed the point (no surprise)
Tue, 08/26/2008 - 07:54 ET by c5thenThis country isn't great in and of itself. It's great because of the people and because of the principles that we live by and force the government to adhere to as laid out in the Declaration of Independance and the Constitution. By definition that means limited government and the people having the liberty to run their lives as they see fit. All of the Democtatic platform is a complete antithesis to those guiding principles. To the extent that we have waivered from those principles, the country has diminished in greatness.
The day that "politician" became a career choice is the day we started losing the Republic. Let's get it back! Alan Keyes '08.
Contrived patriotism
Tue, 08/26/2008 - 08:48 ET by nkviking75Fineman's comments sound like a review of a performance rather than analysis of a news event.
If Michelle really didn't mean what she said when she said she was proud of America for the first time, it wouldn't have taken several months to contrive an answer. Let's say she really has these strong patriotic feelings. Why didn't she say, "I've never been more proud of my country than I am now, given my husband's rise to prominence."
The MSM is just trying to place criticism of Michelle Obama out of bounds.
BTW, if she dug herself out of a whole, is she in China now?
