On Wednesday's "Hardball," substitute host David Shuster previewed a new book targeting Barack Obama by issuing the following warning to viewers at the top of the show:
DAVID SHUSTER: It was right around this time four years ago that the dishonest and highly effective Swift Boat attacks on John Kerry began. Now the man who started it all, with a book about Kerry, has one out attacking Obama. Can the Swift Boaters repeat their success, or does Obama know how to fight back?
In an ensuing segment with Republican consultant Mike Paul and Democratic consultant Rich Masters about the new book, The Obama Nation, Shuster derided the author, and by extension, the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth and demanded that John McCain condemn the anti-Obama book. The following are the relevant excerpts from the August 13, "Hardball,":
[7:17pm]
SHUSTER: Welcome back to "Hardball." The man responsible for launching the dishonest Swift Boat attacks against John Kerry four years ago, Jerome Corsi, is now taking aim at Obama in a new book called The Obama Nation. Corsi told The New York Times, "The goal is to defeat Obama. I don't want Obama in office." And he says he's planning to aid conservative groups that will run ads against the Democratic nominee in the fall. Will Corsi's book be the Swift Boating of Obama? How should Obama fight back? And why hasn't John McCain condemned this book? Rich Masters is a Democratic consultant and joins us in Washington, and Mike Paul is a Republican consultant and former adviser to Rudy Giuliani and joins us in New York. Hey, Mike-
MIKE PAUL, REPUBLICAN CONSULTANT: Yes?
SHUSTER: Do you condemn, do you condemn this book, and should John McCain?
PAUL: I don't condemn, condemn the book. One of the things that it's important to have in this country is a number of different voices, and this is certainly a voice. I do think, though, if there are some areas here within the book that are inaccurate, and quite frankly, just all-out lies, then they should be condemned. But if there's one thing within this book that is true, it could be very damaging to this campaign overall and the campaign I'm talking about is Obama.
SHUSTER: Well, Mike, if I wrote a book about you and there were 99 percent of the things in that book were absolutely false, but I got one thing right, say your birthday, would that be fine?
...
SHUSTER: Hey, Mike, were you out there condemning John McCain four years ago when John McCain had the audacity to condemn the Swift Boat attacks on John Kerry? John McCain was wrong in your book, then, right?
...
SHUSTER: But Charlie Back said that the McCain campaign would make a different choice. Here's what Charlie Black said a month ago. He said, quote, "We don't want to talk about his patriotism and character," referring to Barack Obama. "We concede that he's a patriot and a person of good character." That flies in the face of this book.

Blah
Fri, 08/15/2008 - 04:15 ET by RainsfordMany of those things don't "disprove" what's said in the book. For example, the only defense given to Obama's non-support for the bill that would extend the right to life to fetus's who are already born was that "well, Obama abstained with 12 other senators, even though over 60 voted for it" when Corsi claims Obama was the only one to abstain. So was what Corsi said technically inaccurate? Sure. Does his point still stand? Obviously.
Another quick example right after was on the raising of Capital Gains Tax. Instead of arguing that Obama and Democrats don't plan on raising taxes, they simply play it off by saying "some sources say that lowering the Tax will reduce revenue over 10 years", totally ignoring long term impact, and totally missing the point of the statement.
The point of the book was to display Obama as an ultra-left winger who will do whatever he needs to do to rise politically, and to showcase the fact that his campaign is based on a cult of personality, and nothing more. He accomplishes this goal. Nitpicking sentances (considering the book was obviously rushed to print before the election) while not bothering to challenge the themes that the evidence presents and Media Matters doesn't even say is necessarly false just proves this.
We are all better then
Thu, 08/14/2008 - 21:23 ET by blingbling65We are all better then this, Corsi is a self proclaimed racist conspiracy driven liar. I may disagree with Obama's political views but that doesn't mean I'll blindly believe the lies of the disgusting pill of puck that is Jerome Corsi. This nut-case is so vile that even the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth have disavowed him. He thinks Bush is responsible for 9-11 and on and on.
As for refuting what is in the "book", its all right here

Calling the kettle black . . .
Thu, 08/14/2008 - 16:55 ET by GalvanicI would've asked Shuster if he condemned Dan Rather's Memo-gate report, which his (Rather's) own network's investigation found to be totally devoid of evidence, and having recklessly violated 10 major principals of journalism. And CBS never did explain why the show's producer -- Maples --- contacted the DNC with a tip three days prior to airing, but never asked the subject of the attack (namely, the President of the US) for comment on the accusations.
If Shuster never condemned Rather and/or the report, no one should feel compelled to condemn anything to Shuster's satisfaction.
I Have Been Readimg The Book
Thu, 08/14/2008 - 16:56 ET by RexRuthlessYeah. Great book.
I know you all remember how embararssing it was for Hillary to have to confess to "being human", the irony being that she was the one (not we observers of Hillary) who had to learn the lesson about her "humanity" by realizing, with the unmasking of her false-memory tale of arriving in Serbia under fire, the degree of self-deception she was capable of.
Obama's selective memory is much more consciously deceptive, aimed, honed for a salesman's selling of himself.
He has "forgotten" his lessons on the Koran in his Indonesian public school, the degree of damage done, not by white people in America, but by his alcoholic father and step-father who obviously wounded the young Obama by abandoning him.
Obama has understated his involvement with Rezko.
In fact, he never even publically criticized Rezko when the very people Obama represented in his state senatorial district were left in the Chicago winter without heat in buildings that Rezko had "rennovated".
The book proves Obama's myth about the Kennedy family and his own father to be wholly false. The attempt to create rays of light to Obama's life from the stars of the American political pantheon.
And then there is Obama's involvement with Kenyan politics with his support of the Marxist-oriented and pro-Islamic faction.
Maybe I will add some more to this list later when I get through the second half!

The Swifties Closed Up Shop
Thu, 08/14/2008 - 19:52 ET by Del DolemonteIn fact the Swifties officially shut down at the end of May of 2008. Their website is still up for archival purposes, but they are not active in this political cycle.
Which proves all along that they had no problem with Jean-Claude Kerri being a lowly Senator, but had a real problem with him becoming Commander in Chief.
Speaking of "reporting for duty", he's for the first time in my memory running prime-time political ads on the major Boston teevee stations-especially during their 6 PM news, which ain't cheap. I am starting to wonder if his internal polling isn't that great-for the first time ever he has a serious primary opponent from his own party, as well as a Rethuglican challenger who's not doing so well.

Which one? The fake
Fri, 08/15/2008 - 08:31 ET by dscottWhich one? The fake Hawaiian one he gave to the Daily Kos? The Hawaiian one that says Barry Soetoro? Or the foreign one with Barack H. Obama?
Given all the misrepresentations by Obama, why is he being coy about his birth certificate???? Could it be he is a pretend American like Clark Rockefeller???? A German national who has been here over 20 years, used fraudulent documents, got married, had a child, got divorced, bought houses, bought boats, got driver's license ... all of it using assumed identities.
If Barry Soetoro changed his name back to Barack H. Obama because he wanted to honor his father's name (a laudable choice), where's the court order? Show us the chain of documents to prove you are who you say you are. Filing any government document under false pretenses or knowingly using false/inaccurate information is a crime, Barry, Barack or whoever you are. We the People are entitled to know all of your aliases, pseudonyms, a.k.a., nom de plumes, stage names or however you choose to characterize your representation of yourself.
This might explain one of Obama's positions on illegal immigration given they usually use fake IDs to get jobs, driver's licenses, etc. to live here, they share a common interest.

The birth certificate is mute
Fri, 08/15/2008 - 09:53 ET by Dan The Man 2I dont think this item about a certificate is valid. I imagine that plenty of people are looking into this and have found appropiate documents, unless it is going to be a November surprise? When filings are made to
Fri, 08/15/2008 - 10:30 ET by dscottWhen filings are made to the States, for instance Illinois to campaign for a government office, the political party, the Democrat Party in this case "self certifies" the candidate and files the appropriate documents. Up to this point, it is entirely possible for a non citizen to finesse the registration system using the self certification process. You don't have to supply a copy of your birth certificate to register to vote. All he need do is supply his driver's license and SS#, both of which as has been demonstrated by Clark Rockefeller, can be gotten under false pretense using a faked birth certificate. Once you have the driver's license and SS#, there is viturally no document out there that continues to demand the original birth certificate in addition to these. It all starts with the birth certificate, that Dan is the only certifiable means to verify one's national identity.
The birth certificate the Obama campaign supplied to the Daily Kos was exposed as a fake. Now why would Obama do that????? Why would Obama put his most ardent supporters out on a limb only to have bloggers cut that limb off and destroy their credibility making them look like fools in the process???? There can be only one explaination for this, Obama has something to hide. The reason why anyone lies is because they have something to hide. So why did Obama lie???? Why did Obama supply a fake birth certificate to the Daily Kos??????????

Fri, 08/15/2008 - 11:18 ET by dscottJust as in the Edwards scandal, the MSM will never ask or pursue such a question of Obama unless some else makes it painfully obvious that obfuscating the issue will no longer fly. The MSM is in love with Obama, their legs tingle with excitment I hear. And the MSM does not want the wrath of the ultra left either since the base viewership and readership of their organizations are financially dependent upon them. It's Quid Pro Quo all the way.

Thu, 08/14/2008 - 17:51 ET by BuffNBoneIn both cases the words and actions of the person in question are brought to light. This is something the MSM has repeatedly failed to do and it is why they are losing their stature. If the comments made in the book are false or invalid they should be easy to refute--without nuance. If gravitas (or lack of it) was a concern in the past, it should be equally valid now.
The mere fact I have yet to hear any criticism of Obama from a MSM source is suspicious in its own right. This side of Heaven there isn't perfection.
Whenever I hear the appelation "Swift Boat(er)" it makes we want to pay more attention to, rather than dismiss, the comment or point.

Thu, 08/14/2008 - 18:21 ET by ScrapironI served in Vietnam, same base, the great island bitch, er beach on the bay, as Hanoi John and I didn't need Corsi's book to tell me Hanoi John's stories were not made of whole cloth. He accomplished too many 'impossible' feat's and then abandoned his crew. No hint of a man in him.
I have the book "Unfit for Command" right beside me and can't find one lie in it. Hanoi John hired (using his wife's money) the most expensive lawyers in the country to sue Corsi. They dropped the case like a red hot horse shoe when they figured out the damage it would to their rep's when they lost big time and a counter suit hit.
The democrats may as well accept the facts. Hanoi John was and is a liar of gigantic porportions and he and Silky Edwards are cut from the same cloth. When the world knows for a fact your lover (Kerry/Edwards) is a sleeze bag and liar it's time to dump the lover.

Butter pecan or mint chocolate chip?
Thu, 08/14/2008 - 21:51 ET by thebobboMayhaps I am deluding myself (much like the time that I thought Suzie Morgan liked me in the third grade, until she shoved her butter pecan ice cream cone into my face, and called me "rotten"), but I get the feeling that inch by inch, anybody with half a brain (i.e., Democrats, who are notorious for having half a brain) and anybody else with a sliver more, is coming to accept the oh-so-obvious liberal slant of the MSM ("slant" as in the edge of the Grand Canyon). Not just liberal, but a promulgation of whatever knee-jerk response the Democratic Party wants to offer in response to the latest Republican salvo. If this item doesn't add fuel to fire, then NB is just screaming in outer space.
The liberal-leaning public will be slow and loath to admit it to anyone out loud, but one can ignore reality only so much before it beomes a lie. Will it make a difference in how they vote (there's no "full-brain" requirement to vote, you know)? That's probably a question for a bigger mind than mine, like say, Dear Abby. But the MSM keeps it up at their own peril. Their credibility meter is already red-lining, and every day they just drive themselves deeper into the ground. The funny (sad?) thing is that they just don't seem to realize it. I have no problem with someone expressing their political opinion, but to continually cloak it in some kind of objective journalism is a pill that eventually, most folks in this country won't be willing to swallow. I think we've been seeing that for the last few years, and we'll see a lot more of in the future.
We'll always have the diehards - on both sides, by the way - that believe they're on a mission to preserve us and protect us from ourselves. But most folks have a much more rational approach to life, and these are the ones who will slowly but inevitably see that they are being manipulated on a daily basis, and will finally get fed up with it. You can debate why it hasn't happened sooner, but I'll be charitable here and propose that a lot of people just don't follow politics - and the effects it has on their lives - as closely as do others.
I doubt that guys like Shuster and several others I could mention get that fact. As I deluded myself with Suzie for my own forgotten reasons, they're content to delude themselves into thinking they still have a monopoly on what is reportable truth and want to make sure you believe what they want you to believe, right up to the time they get an ice cream cone shoved into their face. The difference between them and me is that the survival of a nation didn't matter as much in my case.
Suzie, for what it's worth - thank you. You taught me never to delude myself again. And I was only in third grade.
