Meredith Vieira Blames Lack of Health Insurance for Americans' Shortened Lives

Photo of Geoffrey Dickens.

Promoting a new study that claims the longevity of Americans has fallen way behind other countries like France and Australia, "Today" co-host Meredith Vieira offered an explanation that would've made Hillary Clinton and Michael Moore smile - lack of health insurance. After subsitute-host David Gregory noted that the tiny country of Andorra fared better in the survey, with their citizens living an average of 83.5 years compared to America's 77.9 years, Vieira piped up: "They say part of the reason is because so many Americans don't have health insurance."

The following exchange occurred in the 8:30am half-hour of the August 13th, "Today" show:

Meredith Vieira: "So what is the secret to a long life? The people in Japan, Australia, Sweden, France, Great Britain and Canada, they all do better than we do. It turns out the U.S, comes in at number 42 when it comes to life expectancy, just above Mexico."

David Gregory: "It didn't use to be at that low level too. Americans-"

Vieira: "It used to be eleventh place."

Gregory: "Right. Americans live an average of 77.9 years. And the people who, who live the longest?"

Natalie Morales: "Andorra."

Gregory: "Those that live in tiny country of Andorra, right, nestled between France and Spain."

Al Roker: "Wasn't that Bewitched mother-in-law?"

[Laughter]

Gregory: "That's exactly right."

Vieira: "And she was, she never died."

Roker: "She was 800-years-old."

Gregory: "But they, but they survive an average of 83.5 years. So what-"

Vieira: "They say part of the reason is because so many Americans don't have health insurance. So they don't get-"

Gregory: "Right."

Morales: "Obesity, smoking."

Vieira: "Yeah."

How about

How about there are more people sponging off of the system and effectively limiting the resources for the tax paying citizens?  Oh, woops.  Did I say that out loud?

42 countries the libs can flee to, gosh I hope they pick one or a couple and go soon.

I think the "they say" in Mentalmath Sierra's club for socialism are the likemind flaming left wingers she titters about with at her social gatherings as they nod at eachother.

Hasn't the news busted the (UN) WHO reports about 10,000 times ? Maybe not, I guess we'll have to wait till the USA is named #1 in something then they'ell tell us how flawed the data is.

I guess the part where we're just above Mexico - none of them could elaborate upon, since that pretty much explains the stats right there.

Please libs, go to Andorra where your precious NYC and Hollywood are not, and you'll probably kill yourselves within the month.

Insurance Schminsurance

It's healthcare that saves and prolongs lives, not health insurance! No one is denied healthcare in America.

The cost problem is largely due to the insurance company middle-man which serves no other purpose than to seperate people from their money.  If the Socialists succeed in turning that dubious job over to the government, it'll be even worse.

MSA/HSA's NOW!

Lifespan

Wow, no stats for either smoking or obesity, eat up their feelings.

If an overweight individual ever requires heart surgery, that person's chances for a longer survival supersede those of a healthy weight person.

Average lifespan for smokers will vary for genders anywhere from 70's to 90's.

As far as insurance is concerned, people in general are far over insured in the US. Deductibles should start at $1,000.

I'll be blunt ----- Just as

I'll be blunt ----- Just as an experiment, factor out of the equation all of the premature deaths due to drugs, violence and bad living in America's inner citites and I bet that longevity factor shoots way up.

Do they count Illegal Mexicans?

And what about removing the stats for all the illegals from our Southern border? Since they are just behind the U.S., don't 12 million illegals bring down the average just a bit?

It's healthcare that saves

It's healthcare that saves and prolongs lives, not health insurance! No one is denied healthcare in America.

Thanks, matt, that can't be said too often. I'm sick of people equating the two.

So, everyone in the little country of Andorra has health insurance?

Rates of longevity vary, dependent on factors such as obesity, smoking, and even other factors such as wearing seatbelts, driving drunk and too fast, crime and violence, and who knows what other risky behaviors. And health insurance won't change any of those, unless Veiera is sure that if everyone had insurance, we would all be in stop smoking programs, diet and exercize programs, etc. and in the best of health. And there are studies that say black male adolscents are more likely to be killed than other groups. How would health insurance change that?

Let's face it...living an extra 3 or 4 years, say to 84 instead of 80 isn't all that great. Now if you could add those extra 4 years in your 30's, that would be something! And I hate to get into "quality of life" issues, but longevity just for the sake of longevity is not necessarily something to be achieved at all costs.

Mother, Dennis Leary in his rant against the anti-smokers points out, who cares that smoking cuts seven years off your life: it's the last seven years, when you are wearing a diaper, being fed through a tube, and you don't recognize your spouse or family.

As I pointed out to one of the professors in the Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance department at my university: no matter how healthy you eat, no matter how religiously you exercise, sooner or later, you are going to die.  So, enjoy life while you can.

I doubt that it’s heath

I doubt that it’s heath insurance that is the problem Merideth. Consider other factors such as obesity, which is or is becoming one of the largest health problems in America, next to smoking. MV your spouting DNC taking points and being the “dumb blond.” But then let’s not let the facts get in the way of morning entertainment., I mean a good news story. But then again the “Today” show is nothing more than empty headed, meaningless, waste of time. They should cancel the Today show and put a good children’s educational show in it’s place it would be worth more to America’s future.

Uh, Matt as both an evil

Uh, Matt as both an evil conservative, and sorta knowledgeable in the Insurance Industry, I know for a fact that, like everything else, Insurance Companies, (and yes, they are for profit companies) get more of the blame than is realistic, for the US health insurance quagmire, which is mainly the left making it sound worse than it really is, as usual. For example, in the great state of Vermont aka USSV, the state regulations with regard to health insurance, makes it very expensive for evil insurance companies to provide coverage in VT, as many coverages and rates are mandated, and it does not consider your health condition, with regard to your rates. So, what we have achieved in the USSV, is the quiet exit of most insuracne companies, and two gluttonous companies have remained, with kind of a monopolistic attitude, because they can. ($1500 per month for a couple in their 50's.) So yeah, the evil ins cos, like evil conservatives, are part of the picture, but are percieved as the monster, whilest the real monster is the USSV big gov regulation, in our tiny little snow state.

See, the goal of the gov in USSV is indeed to drive out all the ins cos, so they can install their socialized healthcare, and continue their socialist agenda in the USSV.

The ideal scenario, again, like any other product or service, is to allow free competition, and reduced regulation. Rates would drop, due to competition and supply increases.

Insurance has its place

I have no problem with insurance per se.  I used to be in insurance.  The problem comes in when insurance is used for something it was not designed to do - i.e. make recurring payments for routine expenses.

Insurance is meant to protect against an "unforseen" risk like a death or a car accident or a serious illness.  Once you go beyond that, you get into trouble.

I'm for MSA's combined with major-medical policies - all without government intervention, except to allow tax deductibility...

Matt, MSA's and Major Med is a great combo

This would be revolutionary if not for the HMO mentality that so many have.

Talk about a pathetic MSM, I

Talk about a pathetic MSM, I googled 77.9 years and came up with over 100,000 hits.  Hmm, maybe someone is orchestrating an agenda here????  Then google US life expectancy.  What do I find, a 2005 Medical News Today article touting:
Life Expectancy in USA Increases to 77.6 Years; Deaths from Heart Disease, Cancer Decline, Report Finds

http://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/20557.php

Gee, you think some basic research would lead you to a different conclusion that American's life expectancy is decreasing or increasing??????  The best I can say of the MSM is they are incompetent!!!!  The alternative is that they are engaged in deception!

 Here's another one from 1997: http://www.efmoody.com/estate/lifeexpectancy.html

So just a couple of google tries I find that life expectancy in the US has been steadily increasing since 1900 with no down turns.  Here the MSM asserts we are going to live less because of no health insurance???  Idiots.

So my suspisions were

So my suspisions were correct. I knew there was a political component to this study on longevity. And of course it's liberal.

Global warming, George Bush, lack of socialized medicine, Karl Rove, underfunded schools, "illegal" guns. All these "problems" sound like a liberal's hit-list.

This is a no-brainer. It's our eating habits stupid. If you ever get a chance to talk to people from Europe, no matter what country they come from they all agree that Americans are fat. I thought that was just a stereotype they have of us until visiting a few western Europe countries. You have to search fairly hard to spot a fat European. Want to see a bunch of typical fat Americans? Go on a cruise ship. Stand at the buffet at watch the fireworks. How many hip replacements take place now versus 10 years ago? Hey Meredith STFU.

Fat people.

I'll agree, I've been to Europe several times and fat people are as rare as deodorant at a Kos convention.

Some time ago I read

Some time ago I read something about Asians being thin, in their native countries. But when they come to the US and start eating "western-style", they start to catch up in weight.

Portion control. Europeans, when they go out to eat, actually eat those small portions that you see displayed on Food Channel plates. Not a steak that should serve 3 or 4 people and a baked potato the size of Michael Jordan's shoe.

Apparently you either

Apparently you either haven't been to Germany to eat in a restaurant or Germany isn't apart of Europe, their portions are huge (esp. the 1 # slab of meat) and very few veges.

How many Caucasians does

How many Caucasians does one encounter in Uruguay? More often than not physical attributes can be explained through genetics. We are not that far away from the milk and butter farming generations. And the cheese eaten by Europeans is nullified by the wine they consume.

funny thing these 'studies'

funny thing these 'studies' While the study averages life expectancy, does each country record births and deaths the same? Alas,  no.. America counts a premature baby as being alive even if the baby later dies. Other countries do not count premature baby's that later die as being 'born'. So comparing life expectancy is a bunch of crap. Americas' will always be lower.

What is the life expectancy

What is the life expectancy of a baby headed for a abortion

I find it odd that the left would care how long we live.
When a life gets inconvenient as in getting too old, or being born at a bad

By the way the country of Andorra has no legal abortion..

Longevity

And as we all know, longevity is the only measuring stick for a quality life. Who cares if you spend your life living in servitude to your government or waiting in long lines for health care, at least you'll live an extra couple of miserable years!

This is my theory: the socialists in government choke off the health care and insurance industries with their regulations. And then they say, "Look! health care just doesn't work under
captialsim! We need to swap it out for government controlled health care!" And then you get the simpletons in big media like MV who believe it.

As proof that regulations make health insurance expensive just take a look at Massachussets. Mitt Romney eliminated the government regulations there and health insurance suddenly became affordable again. Other states would do well to follow suit.

The reason is simple...

It's TV shows like GMA and "The View" that contribute to premature deaths and suicides among their viewers.

Pssst. It has nothing to do with various countries changing their statistical methods in measuring births and deaths since the longevity statistics began being published and promoted.

Oh, and by the way...The US average life span has been increasing every year and never fallen since the longevity stats have been published. Other countries have just jumped in recent years putting the US further down the list. Now, I wonder how THAT could have happened? (see my "pssst" above)

So if I smoke two packs a day, drink copious amounts of alcohol,  eat red meat, and fried foods every day, and abstain from excercise every chance I get, by virtue of having an HMO, but little, or no gumption, or will power, I am guaranteed longevity.

Thanks Meredith, I will sleep better tonight.

At least Roker tossed in some undisguised nonsense. (Meredith take note!) Speaking of "Big Al", how would he get weight loss surgery from socialized medicine? Nevermind, I figured it out....after all the taxes are gone from his pay for "healthcare", he won't have money for food!

"I may be crazy, but at least I'm not stupid" ME

I think every one is

I think every one is missing some of the point here. The
idea is to keep people worried. That way you keep watching their show, or the
weather, or what ever they want you to watch to make sure that __________(fill
in the blank) does not kill you.

Look how hurricanes are covered: “there is a cloud over Cape
Verdi we think it could become a hurricane with in weeks and then with in the
next few weeks come over here!!!

Here is what you do to get ready for the up coming Armageddon..
go to the store and buy batteries, and water. (we will be down at the store to video
how the store is running out of batteries and water)!!

We will provide you with a list of stores that have
batteries and water.. So stay tuned for the latest ..

Then they go video standing water and talk about the flood.
(remember the guy walking by as the reporter sat in the canoe)

Ever notice that is always is under an over pass. (they
always can video a fool that thought he could drive through)

So when I am laying on my death dead, I won’t be wondering..
did I make it to 77.9999 years of age.. and if not why?

These are the boys of Pointe du Hoc.

You are correct sir.........in that respect though, I think they are the ones buying all the batteries. Robots go through batteries like butta.
