Amazon on Chopping Block? FTC Attempting to Cut Notch in Bezos Empire

The Federal Trade Commission is expected to file a highly anticipated antitrust lawsuit against Amazon in a move that could break up the company.

Politico reported that the lawsuit will focus on alleged antitrust practices of Amazon, likely “challenges to Amazon Prime, rules that the FTC says block lower prices on competing websites, and policies the FTC believes force merchants to use Amazon’s logistics and advertising services.” The FTC has interviewed dozens of witnesses and has access to “millions” of documents, according to the report.

“FTC has interviewed dozens of witnesses both inside and outside Amazon, including CEO Andy Jassy and former CEO and founder Jeff Bezos,” according to Politico. “The FTC has collected millions of documents from Amazon and third parties over the last three years to build its case.”

The FTC’s investigation into the $1.3 trillion company is just the next step in FTC Chair Lina Khan’s war against corporations, although a resolution in the case will likely take years.

MRC Free Speech America & MRC Business VP Dan Schneider said Khan should be focusing on the company’s deceptive trade practices that actually harm consumers.

"Amazon is one of the worst offenders of bias against conservatives, and it is responsible for much of society's social degradation," he said. "But Lina Khan doesn't know a corporation she doesn't want to break up. She ought to be focusing her efforts on Amazon's deceptive trade practices."

In June, MRC Free Speech America reported that the FTC ordered Amazon to pay millions of dollars in two separate settlements for shocking privacy violations. A federal court determined that the Big Tech company mishandled the sensitive information of children who use Alexa, as well as users of the Ring doorbell system. The company paid a total of $30.8 million in fines for privacy violations on the two matters.

MRC Free Speech America has long warned against Amazon’s home technology. In 2019, the company admitted to hiring employees to listen in on what users said to Alexa in their own homes.

Conservatives are under attack. Call up Amazon at 1 (888) 280-4331 and demand that it not violate the privacy of its users and that it mirror the First Amendment while providing transparency, clarity on so-called hate speech and equal footing for conservatives.
