DNC Chair: Republicans Believe Illegal Immigration 'Should be a Crime'

By Fred Lucas | May 31, 2011 | 14:36

A  A

Democratic National Committee Chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz denounced Republicans last week for believing illegal immigration “should in fact be a crime.” “I think the president was clearly articulating that his position – the Democratic position – is that we need comprehensive immigration reform,” said Wasserman Schultz, a U.S. House member from Florida at a Christian Science Monitor Breakfast on May 26.

“We have 12 million undocumented immigrants in this country that are part of the backbone of our economy and this is not only a reality but a necessity. And that it would be harmful – the Republican solution that I’ve seen in the last three years is that we should just pack them all up and ship them back to their own countries and that in fact it should be a crime and we should arrested them all.”

The comment has drawn attention among conservative commentators and bloggers. During the comments, the chairwoman referred to legislation in 2006 by then Rep. James Sensenbrenner (R-Mich.) that would increase border enforcement and make illegal immigration a criminal offense instead of a civil matter.

However, the Senate bill immunized illegal aliens from being prosecuted for document fraud, a felony, and did not stop the practice of allowing illegal aliens eventually granted legal residency to go back and claim credit with the Social Security Administration for work they did as an illegal. These provisions were in sections 601 and 614 of the McCain-Kennedy comprehensive immigration reform bill.

At the same Christian Science Monitor breakfast, Wasserman Schultz said, “If it were up to the candidates for president on the Republican side, we would be driving foreign cars; they would have let the auto industry in America go down the tubes.”

The Hill newspaper quickly reported that Wasserman Schultz owns a 2010 Infiniti FX35, a Japanese car whose parent company is Nissan. The newspaper cited Florida motor vehicle records.

Further during the breakfast, she stressed that support for Israel should not become a partisan issue, and believed that Republicans were trying to make it one. But she referenced President Barack Obama as “probably” being pro-Israel.

“One of the most tremendous sources of pride for me is that I am the first Jewish woman to represent the state of Florida in Congress. And another tremendous source of pride is that I am a pro-Israel Jewish member of Congress and I probably support a president that is pro-Israel,” Wasserman Schultz said. “What I think is unfortunate and what I suggested along with others – including members of the Republican Jewish Coalition that are not the executive director of that organization, that we need to make sure that like AIPAC pushes for, like Jewish Federation pushes for, like ADL [Anti-Defamation League] and every major Jewish organization pushes for in this country, we need to make sure that Israel never becomes a partisan issue.”

The new chairwoman has made a number of attention grabbing comments. In an April 6 interview on MSNBC, Wasserman Shultz voiced her opposition to the proposal by House Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan (R-Wisc.) to reduce the deficit by $6 trillion in 10 years.

“This plan would literally be a death trap for some seniors,” Wasserman Schultz said.

The word literally is defined as meaning actual or not figuratively speaking.

Last week she said on MSNBC, that the passage of the health care law has strengthened Medicare.

“In fact, we added 12 years of solvency to Medicare and ensure that it would be better for senior,” she said on Andrea Mitchell Reports on May 25.

That’s contrary to the assessment of the Congressional Budget Office, the non-partisan accounting arm of Congress that predicted the Medicare trust fund will be exhausted by 2020 at the current path, almost a decade sooner than the last year’s forecast.

the ad

Submitted by jon_torlin on Tue, 05/31/2011 - 3:28pm.

It should start off with a voice over and caption saying "This is how Democrats view Illegal Immigration."  And then show her saying that, and put captions showing her words for the hearing impaired.

And then go back to black and show the relevant law and say "Any questions?"

That should have a HUGE impact.

It is the law. 8 USC 1323 It is illegal to harbor an illegal 8 USC 1324. But since when did the law matter to a Democrat.

OOOPS This is the actual law I was trying to find 8 USC 1325. It refers to the illegal for entering illegally. It has a fine and possible jail time. So to me that makes it a crime.

I doubt it would do any good to show her the actual law. I am going to try if I can get an e-mail through.

Giving new meaning to the word "dumb"...

Submitted by PrairieSky on Tue, 05/31/2011 - 4:07pm.

Man, this is one dumb broad...I guess someone needs to explain to "Debbie Dimwit" what illegal means...Apparently she doesn't seem to understand that when something is illegal, it is a crime.

And the lefty wingnuts are always saying that those of us on the right are stupid?? Geez.

Good ole Debbie Wheresmybrain Schultz, the gift that keeps on giving. If she was a man we would be saying she steps on "it" every time she opens her mouth.

As it has been said before, the GOP and whoever is running against her next time she is up for re-election should put together clips of all the idiotic statements made by her and all the lies she has spewed.  Use these as campaign ads against her.  Nothing like ones own words coming back to bite you in the arse.

I do not think she will be able to sit down for a month.

Ok (or as my twitter happy friends would say, K), what does the phrase "And another tremendous source of pride is that I am a pro-Israel Jewish member of Congress and I probably support a president that is pro-Israel" mean? Does it mean that she probably supports Obama? Or she would probably support a president, should he be pro-Israel (not Obama)? Or does it mean she's a dough-head?

Me, personally, I'm going with dough-head. And denialist, as well, if she thinks the Great and Mighty O is pro-Israel. Har, har, har....snork! Pro-Israel!! So's Helen Thomas, I guess.

Difference between libs and conservatives

Submitted by jon_torlin on Tue, 05/31/2011 - 7:22pm.

That's the difference between liberals and conservatives.  Liberals "believe" things that have no basis in reality most if not all the time.

Conservatives KNOW that illegal immigration is a crime.  But then we know what the word "illegal" means.

Debbie the Ditz, " We have 12

Submitted by ant on Wed, 06/01/2011 - 1:37am.

Debbie the Ditz, " We have 12 million undocumented immigrants in this country that are part of the backbone of this economy and this is not only a reality- but a necessity."
Point A- How long have they been using this '12 million' number? 7 years? 10? Are we to believe that number has NOT climbed? Am I to deny what my eyes have seen as areas are inundated and fellow American workers are displaced and I find myself in a coffee shop surround by Spanish-speaking strangers, where I used to know the people that came by in the morning but I am now the lone 'gringo'. I guess that 12 million is not considered a defining number, so...like 12 could mean 50 and growing or 20 or 70. Who knows? Certainly not Deb.
Point B- illegals.. excuse me...'undocumented', are part of the backbone of this economy?.. Oh yes, wherever would we be without the contributions of racist, illegal Mexican Nationalists... or the 1,001 inventions of Islam ?( hat tip to the State Dept. which just created a video celebrating that fact)
Point C- Again,.."backbone of this economy'? What economy? You're and you're fellow Dims failed economy? I wouldn't consider an economy like the one you have created as having a 'backbone'.
Point D- "...this is not only a reality- but a necessity."... Yes, Debbie, when you have a 10% unemployment rate and 12 million (you're familiar with that number, aren't you, Marblemouth?) people on food stamps, there is nothing more necessary than importing foreign illegal workers. F***ing Shmuck.

DWS

Submitted by Phryj1 on Wed, 06/01/2011 - 2:09am.

Demented Witless and Stupid.
Seems to me those 12 million+ illegal aliens -who ARE committing a crime by merely being in this country, despite what reality-challenged proggies might say- are taking jobs away from American citizens who need them. The Dems claim they're the ones fighting for people to get livable wages, but when you consider that illegal aliens are taking jobs away by doing work for less than a citizen would be paid, their position falls apart. They cannot have it both ways. You either support American citizens getting livable wages, or you support illegal alien workers. And the claim it's somehow a necessity for illegals to work here is false, as Americans doing these same jobs and being paid fairly for them would then be able to buy things and pay taxes with this money, thus removing the illegals has more economic benefit.

And has Debbie here never heard of FORD? You know, the AMERICAN car company that recovered on it's own, WITHOUT help from the gov't? She probably pretends it doesn't exist. After all, the whole Ford vs. GM case study is the most compelling argument against socialist style market intervention you can see anywhere. And it flies right in the face of the leftist academic ideology Obama and the Dems follow. Makes them look like real idiots. Well, even more so.

Progressives seem to be completely averse to facts and logic. Apparently, reality has a conservative bias.
