Networks Treated Good Friday, Earth Day as Equals

By Erin R. Brown | April 25, 2011 | 15:39

Erin R. Brown's picture

This past Friday, April 22, 2011, marked the simultaneous celebration of Good Friday and Earth Day and ABC, CBS and NBC treated the two “holidays” as equals.

Though Good Friday has been celebrated by millions around the world for nearly 2,000 years, the 41-year-old liberal eco-celebration of “green living” known as “Earth Day” was put on the same platform as the sacred day that Christians remember Christ’s death.

There were 21 stories about Good Friday or Earth Day on April 22, and the networks nearly split down the middle in covering the Christian holiday and the “movement” to “save the environment.”

Only four of the 11 Good Friday stories (36 percent) were positive stories about Christians celebrating Jesus’ death on the cross; the other seven were casual mentions of the day. Earth Day garnered 10 mentions from the networks, with seven (70 percent) of those stories accounting for the fawning coverage of how Americans “go Green” and just three (30 percent) were casual mentions.

CBS’s “The Early Show” all but skipped over the Christian holy day in favor of a seven minute segment about “green living” and going past “just recycling.” After opening the segment with, “It’s good Friday, the flowers in bloom here in New York” and nothing more about the holiday, anchor Chris Wragge did a check of the weather, and then transitioned into a glowing piece about students who “think about the planet every day.”

Good Friday only netted four positive stories, all highlighting the yearly pilgrimage of Christians to Jerusalem, taking up crosses and retracing Jesus’ final steps before his death at Calvary.

CBS correspondent Marysol Castro reported on the elementary school Earth Day initiative for CBS, asking a kindergarten student at Willard Elementary in Ridgewood, New Jersey, “So you’re really doing your part here, saving the earth, one juice box at a time?” After spending a day with the students and learning about recycling, planting, cutting waste and “healthy decisions,” Castro concluded the segment declaring, “Forty-one years after Earth Day began, saving the environment is no longer a new way of thinking. It’s a way of life, and these students will set the standard for generations to come.”

These findings are not surprising considering the network evening news shows in 2010 chose to link the Christian holiday of Easter to the Catholic Church pedophilia scandal in more than 91 percent of negative Easter stories. The Culture and Media Institute discovered that the nightly news shows for ABC, CBS and NBC featured nearly two thirds of stories about Easter were negative, and every story about Earth Day raved about the celebration of Mother Earth.

Who cares? We can count on

Submitted by Satchmo on Mon, 04/25/2011 - 4:02pm.

Who cares? We can count on Ms. Brown to file the same story at every Christian holiday. How about embracing free market solutions and starting your own television news channel that would provide coverage of Christianity sufficient to your standards? I would also think that the last thing a Christian would do on a friday during Lent would be to watch television, especially Good Friday.

Good Friday was created well

Submitted by Satchmo on Mon, 04/25/2011 - 10:02pm.

Good Friday and its traditional observances were created well after the various Bible texts were written. Also, I don't think what's-his-name above is in the Bible.

....because it's unreasonable for Christians to expect to be afforded the same respect and recognition as everyone else, right? And we certainly shouldn't be concerned that news networks that claim to be objective and impartial try to systematically diminish the significance of Christian traditions -while at the same time forcing the green religion down everyone's throats- should they?

I know it doesn't mean anything to you, but that doesn't mean it shouldn't be important to anyone else.

Tell me, if the MSM decided to repeatedly downplay and diminish something that you believed in, wouldn't you be upset about it?

Progressives seem to be completely averse to facts and logic. Apparently, reality has a conservative bias.

Would I be upset about it?

Submitted by Satchmo on Mon, 04/25/2011 - 8:05pm.

Would I be upset about it? No, for two reasons: one, I don't watch much television, and I certainly don't watch network television news or most cable news; and two, I exercise my choice as a consumer and choose not to watch. The MSM constantly downplays and diminishes all sorts of things I believe in, but why would I let it upset me? Instead of being upset about it, why not start your own news channel that would place an emphasis on the things you wish to see? Come up with a free market solution instead of bitching about a product on the market.

Submitted by Phryj1 on Mon, 04/25/2011 - 8:46pm.

1. It's not exactly easy to start up a TV channel, and
2. We shouldn't have to. The news media claims to represent the voices and views of everyday Americans. Since a lot of Americans are Christians, and the media is ignoring that, the claim rings hollow. Hence, Ms. Brown's article.

Yes, because you say it is. News organizations are consumer services, and they require scrutiny just like any other product, and people are right to complain just like with any other product. All of that is part of the free market.. the free market isn't always about waiting for someone to start a new company.

Yes, that was my exact point

Submitted by Satchmo on Tue, 04/26/2011 - 12:30pm.

Yes, that was my exact point to begin with: news is a consumer product. If there is such a perceived dearth of Christian-oriented news on these stations, then there exists an opportunity for someone to meet that demand. The point is also that there is a lot of complaining about frivolous things, and that no one here ever offers free market solutions.

The MSM is full of secular humanists so it's no wonder that they celebrate Earth Day, which is set on Lenin's B-Day. They can't ignore Easter because they'd alienate too many of the views they have left. Earth Day is part of the secular humanist religion.

eh, the thing thats annoying about this is that nobody really celebrates Earth Day. I'm sure some people do, the people who spend a portion of their life as environmental activists. But the average person wouldn't even hear about Earth Day if it wasn't for corporations like Starbucks using it as a marketing gimmick and it being pushed at some schools. Its a made up holiday like Kwanzaa for the most part.

....environmentalism has become our newest religion. According to Joel Garreau, professor of law, culture and values at the Sandra Day O’Connor College of Law at Arizona State University, a religion is characterized by “a distinction between sacred and profane objects; a moral code; feelings of awe, mystery and guilt; adoration in the presence of sacred objects and during rituals; a worldview that includes a notion of where the individual fits; and a cohesive social group of the likeminded.” Environmentalism, Garreau concluded in an article last year, fits this definition of religion very well.

EARTH DAY, OR, AS CURLY WOULD CALL IT, "OYITH DAY!"

Damn! I was in grade school in the 40's and missed the opportunity to be told by a media empty skirt that, "I was saving the earth one juice box at at a time." Of course, we were deprived....we didn't have juice boxes. This twit states that saving the environment is a, "Way of life." Sorry sweetie, I get my, "Way of life" from the Bible. I have a feeling that Marysol Castro was an affiormative action hire. What else could cover her ignorant comments.

Yus, earth worship is a religion to some. I pity them. Don't forget that when communism was knocked out of the park by Reagan, the survivors flooded to the environmental movement......and the EPA. Just look at the "Decision" not to give Shell a permit to drill in Alaska. Soon the media will repeat the phoney picgtures of caribou, etc. in ANWAR> I've been to ANWAR. Want to be alone? Go there. ANWR area alone  is almost 9 million acres. Naturally it would look like there are no critters. Folks from Texas would probably be the only folks who could grasp the Alaskan expanse.

Alaska has about 700,000 population. That averages 1.1 person per square mile.

Texas has 24 million people averaging 79.6 people per square mile.

Louisiana has 4.3 million averaging 102 people per square mile.

California has 36 million population averaging 217 people per square mile.

Boudin did make a good point.
