MTV to Air Abortion Special, Media Yawn

MTV aims to make a profit airing a show about a pregnant teen deciding to abort her baby, and the best media writers can muster is to call it a “sensitive issue.”

An MTV Special to be aired at 11:30pm Dec. 28, “No Easy Decision” is a half-hour program that follows a teen mom’s tragic decision to abort her child. The media coverage leading up to the program’s air date has merely glossed over the murderous reality that is abortion, and used terms like “sensitive issue,” “wrenching decision” and “ostracized party guest” to downplay the severity of infanticide.

The most egregious example of glossing over the impact of abortion comes from Linda Lowen at about.com. Lowen twists the media's lack of interest in abortion into some fantasy victimhood like a socially awkward teen at a party.

“If the TV and film industry threw a party and invited all of the biggest social ills –  alcoholism, drug addiction, domestic violence, rape, drunk driving, infidelity, bullying, child pornography – as guests, abortion would be persona non grata, the unwanted person,” Lowen wrote. “That's because in the world of mainstream media, depicting abortion on film or TV is akin to inviting a socially ostracized party guest whose mere presence is guaranteed to start a fight.”

Willa Paskin of New York Magazine casually mentions that abortions are considered “taboo” and that the teen featured on the special has pregnancy decision to make. “[The MTV Special] will focus on Markai, a young woman who appeared in16 and Pregnant, as she decides what to do about her second pregnancy,” Paskin wrote. “Abortion has generally been taboo on television (with characters having miscarriages or changes of heart instead, though they've become a little more common oflate), and the late air time is a nod to that.”

Sunny Pepper at Examiner.com at least acknowledged that there are consequences to an abortion, but failed to acknowledge the loss of life in the process. “With its new special, ‘No Easy Decision’, MTV will document the decision-making and consequences following a young teen who wrenches with the decision of abortion after getting pregnant a second time.”

Entertainment Weekly’s Jennifer Armstrong described a teen's decision as a “sensitive issue” and called it the ending of a pregnancy instead of loss of life. “After documenting dozens of teen mothers' heart-wrenching stories via its hit ‘16 and Pregnant’ and ‘Teen Mom’ series, MTV will tackle the sensitive issue of abortion with a separate special called ‘No Easy Decision,’ EW has learned exclusively,” Armstrong wrote. “Dr. Drew Pinsky will also talk with young women who, like 27 percent of teens who end up with unplanned pregnancies, have chosen to end them.” Her article was also linked to on CNN.com

Nice that these media writers choose to characterize the killing of a human being as “no easy decision” or “sensitive issue” – lip service to appease those oppose infanticide.

MTV has done this special in direct collaboration with Exhale, a non-profit post-abortion support group that will feature live blogging and a twitter campaign during the special’s airing.

I find it interesting that

Submitted by Radical1979 on Tue, 12/28/2010 - 6:56pm.

I find it interesting that there is a non-profit post-abortion support group.  Libs would have us believe there are no after effects of abortion.  If these women need a support group it's an admission that these women do feel guilt for their actions.

I won't judge this show until I see it.  I saw 16 and Pregnant and found it to be an honest portrayal of the difficulties of teenage mothers.  Hopefully some truth will come through on this show also.

Will MTV have the courage to show a partial birth abortion? NO!

To some, the legalized murder

Submitted by DWoSD on Tue, 12/28/2010 - 7:35pm.

To some, the legalized murder of a fellow human being is a sensitive issue, but not enough to stop it, only enough to exploit it for money.

We have seen enough to know where the communist want to take this country, so the question is will we let it to continue happening?

Remember when MTV (Moronic

Submitted by Martin2717 on Tue, 12/28/2010 - 8:06pm.

Remember when MTV (Moronic TeleVision now) used to be about showing music videos of your favorite music artists who actually had talent? Yeah....... too bad those days are long gone.

ended about 1990. The big down hill run to jumping the shark started with the show "the real world' and all of the "beach party" bash shows.

I have yet to meet a liberal

Submitted by Thoreau on Tue, 12/28/2010 - 8:15pm.

I have yet to meet a liberal that thinks pro-choice applied to them when they were in the womb.

I suggest every person that wants to abort their child observe a child being aborted first.  You spend more time shopping for a car than killing a child.   All you have to do is glove up and observe one procedure.

I think their ignorance should be remedied so that they know exactly what it is they're paying for.  Consider it like the viewing room of an execution.  A real teaching tool that would either save two lives, or condemn them.  That would be an informed choice.  And then there would be no need for mental health support groups after the fact.

Typical MSM BS

Submitted by ljacone on Wed, 12/29/2010 - 8:52am.

The MSM not giving this any coverage and skirting the issue should not be surprising.  It's their typical "pro-abortion-as-birth-control" MO.

I have seen a few segments (not a whole episode) of 16 & Pregnant and Teen Mom and from what I have seen the shows are (as has been mentioned elsewhere in this thread) a pretty hash look at the realities of teen pregnancy and parenthood.  And if MTV can put those realities in front of teen eyeballs and show the the hardships which come with unprotected sex, then I am alright with that.

By the same token, if this special helps demonstrate the effects on the mother, the maybe teens won't be so quick to fall back on "Oh I'll just get an abortion" to justify their promiscuity.  I don't expect the program to show or otherwise detail the nature of the child being killed, even airing in late night.  But hopefully some young people will still get the message.

I went to a Catholic HS, and in our (I want to say) sophmore theology class we watched a video of an abortion.  One of the most horrific things I have ever seen.  I remember girls just breaking down in tears and other boys just looking white as ghosts.  At the time I thought it was exploitative (and part of me still does, frankly), but Sweet Christmas did it drive home the reality of the situation for me and my classmates.

Disgusting

Submitted by mnemosyne23 on Wed, 12/29/2010 - 11:47am.

Not surprised, but disgusted.  This isn't merely "ending a pregnancy," it's ending a LIFE.

I would also like to point out that this is the young woman's SECOND pregnancy. You would think, after the difficulties she faced when she was "16 and Pregnant," she would have tried to be a little more careful about her sexual encounters until she was at an age and an income level where another baby wouldn't be such a burden.  Apparently she did NOT learn her lesson, and it's the unborn baby who will suffer the consequences, not the thoughtless mother.  She receives no sympathy from me at all.  All my prayers are with the unborn child.

Is this what we've become?

Submitted by Bronco46 on Wed, 12/29/2010 - 5:53pm.

That this can happen in the United States is saddening. What has become of the morals of our society. I'm not a religious person, far from it. But I'm revoted by the idea that it would even occur to young women, to use abortion as birth control. What has happened to women that they know casually kill that which they are supposed to protect and nurture. This just lazy, amoral behavior. And now we're telling young impressionable young girls that killing helpless living things is perfectly acceptable.

Our ancestors are weeping for what we've become!
