CNN's Ali Velshi Insists 'We Don't Tax Too Much,' Rich Aren't 'Taxed Sufficiently'
CNN's Ali Velshi called out "hold on" five times at a Republican before he repeated liberal talking points on tax policy on Thursday's edition of American Morning. "We don't tax too much. Let's just stop that for a second," Velshi said after cutting off Republican strategist Jim McLaughlin. McLaughlin had told the American Morning panel. "We spend and we tax too much."

Velshi also trotted out the typical left-wing complaints about tax burdens. "There's a whole part of our population here who doesn't get taxed sufficiently, and there's general agreement that it will not cripple any part of our economy to tax those at the highest end properly and to tax corporations consistently. Why won't Republicans just get off the talking point and say 'we do not have a fair tax system in this country?'" Jim McLaughlin responded by describing the detrimental effects of raising taxes on a bad economy. "When you raise taxes, it takes more money out of the economy."
Democratic political analyst Robert Zimmerman then somewhat curiously gave credit to Ronald Reagan. "Ronald Reagan raised taxes eleven times in his presidency, Bill Clinton raised taxes, they had very successful economic presidencies." Despite the dubious nature of Zimmerman's claims regarding the former Republican president, it is interesting that he gave Reagan credit for anything at all. Democrats now only give recognition to the economic successes of the Reagan years when they need to justify tax hikes.

AMERICAN MORNING
06/30/2011
6:41 am EDT
CHRISTINE ROMANS: But Jim, it's about leverage, though. What the Republicans are saying is that they - this is a moment that they can use to - the reason why we are in this position is because we spend - we borrow 38 cents of every dollar we spend. We can't do that anymore
JIM MCLAUGHLIN: We spend and we tax too much.
ROMANS: But that's the bigger picture.
ALI VELSHI: Jim, Jim hold on a second. Hold on. Hold on a second. Hold on. Jim, hold on, let me - let me get in here for a second Jim. We don't tax too much. Let's just stop that for a second.
MCLAUGHLIN: We tax way too much, we tax way too much.
VELSHI: There's a whole part of our population here who doesn't get taxed sufficiently, and there's general agreement that it will not cripple any part of our economy to tax those at the highest end properly and to tax corporations consistently. Why won't Republicans just get off the talking point and say "we do not have a fair tax system in this country?"
MCLAUGHLIN: Because they get it just like the American people get it. When you raise taxes, it takes more money out of the economy. It costs - let me ask you something -
ROBERT ZIMMERMAN: Jim, 70% in every poll point out that they support increasing taxes for the top tier earners in our country. And let's remember, Ronald Reagan raised taxes eleven times in his presidency, Bill Clinton raised taxes, they had very successful economic presidencies.
ROMANS: Our revenue problem is that the economy isn't growing very strongly. And we need to have this economy growing strongly. When I hear people railing about "this is a revenue issue, you know, we're not going to raise taxes, we're not going to raise taxes," there isn't enough money, and we have to figure out how - what I hear from Washington right now is the same old Republican - Democrats, entrenching in their talking points, and I don't know that they get it this this has got to be solved near term.

The libs' mantra of 'tax the wealthy' is getting just as old as 'racist' is. And I actually agree with Velshi's statement, 'We don't tax too much.' Although it's more about percentage than worth. The number I'm thinking of is 49%. The GOP should take that to the debt ceiling negotiations with the following conversation, 'We vote no on any increase until the percentage of people paying taxes is over 80%.' BOOM! Negotiations over. I'm wondering why FOX isn't drilling the 49% taxpayers to death as the MSM drills tax the rich to death, oh wait, it's that whole socialism experiment the libs thought we should try again so it could fail, again.
The 49%

Flat tax for all. End class warfare.
I totally agree, Red

A flat tax with a universal rate and a $40,000 standard deduction for all. No other deductions period.

We don't have a tax issue. We have an employment issue. All of this emphasis on taxes is a distraction from the real problem. Our economy is stalled and the obama administration is out of ideas. So now the only card they have left is class warfare against the people who aren't yet suffering because of this clueless president.
CNN: As always "right down the middle"

LOL.
Utterly laughable for CNN to claim that they're objective, "in the middle between FOX and MS-NBC." CNN is only *slightly* less biased than NBC/MS-NBC.
Perhaps the progressives

Perhaps the progressives would be happy when the tax rate for the "rich" is such that they are left with a net income 55k a year? Seems like I've encountered this idea before, around 1984 maybe.
We don't tax too much. Yes,

It seems that Obama's highest approval rating is among the rich. Why would the "evil" rich be so supportive of a man who wants to take away their wealth???
Why?
Submitted by jon_torlin on Thu, 06/30/2011 - 7:51pm.
Because they think they can buy their "protection" from being hit. All they did was delay the inevitable until there are no more victims to toss to the crocodiles and alligators before they are consumed.
How wrong they are.
Soetoro is a true Muslim/Communist, he really wants to take EVERYONE's money. He's also flaking on those who have supported him initially like the gay issue. In Islam, gays must be killed/destroyed, so he's just sucking up to them until it's time that he's done with them as well.

It gives you an idea of how uninformed and clueless most journalists are. Maybe Ali should trot back to Canada if finds politics in the US so distasteful. Perhaps they don't want him either.
Let's tax the PAC's
Submitted by CobraMan on Thu, 06/30/2011 - 7:55pm.
This reminds me of the "Tax The Richest" campaigning going on in Minnesota right now.
I think that the government should close all those tax loopholes once and for all. This means that Unions, first and foremost, will now be taxed, as well as PAC's, political campaigns, non-profits (Corporation for Public Broadcasting, anyone?), ect. I wonder if the Democrats would object to this? They shouldn't. After all, they all think that people should "pay their fair share," correct?

I know Velshi gets paid a hefty sum for whatever it is he does, so why not write Uncle Sam a check? I guess he keeps forgetting that it is his right to hand the government as much money as he feels appropriate. I mean, if Velshi thinks Washington is doing such a bang-up job, why doesn't he put his money where his mouth is?
What? He believes our government should only spend other people's money?
Oh. I see. In other words, he's no different from any other liberal moron...

I just wish that one of these days someone would challenge both the morality and constitutionality of a majority group of US voters electing politicians that openly promise to confiscate the private property of a minority group of US citizens. Discrimination based on one's income is still discrimination.
And the argument that one can simply "choose" to earn less is as facetious as arguing that one can avoid other forms of discrimination by "choosing" not to be homosexual or a member of a certain religious faith. Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness are unalienable rights laid forth in the US Declaration of Independence. Working hard and earning income to make one's life more comfortable definitely qualifies as "pursuit of happiness", and is therefore an unalienable right that should not be excessively infringed upon or be subjected to arbitrary and discriminatory laws of the federal government.
