'60 Minutes' Logan Doesn't Let Facts Get In Way Of Swipes At U.S. Military

On Sunday's episode of "60 Minutes" (11/30/08), Lara Logan profiled Army hero Private Monica Brown, an 18-year-old medic who was awarded the Silver Star. Yet as wonderful as Brown's heroics were, Logan's profile could not shake the impression that it really wanted to get in some cheap shots at the United States military. Here's how Logan opened her piece:

Private Monica Brown is only the second woman to be awarded the Silver Star since the Second World War. She’s an Army medic who risked her own life to save two critically wounded paratroopers of the 82nd airborne division in Afghanistan.

O.K. so far. But then Logan abruptly switched gears:

Under Army regulations, women cannot be assigned to front-line combat units, but in the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq today, that’s exactly where they often end up. Some male soldiers aren’t so happy about that, including members of Private Brown’s own unit. But her superior officers say she’s a hero, a hero who earned one of the military’s highest awards for exceptional valor when she was only 18 years old.

That women "cannot be assigned to front-line combat units" is a theme that Logan hammered throughout her piece. The problem? Private Brown was not on a front-line combat mission. As Logan's own story indicated, Brown was a medic in a unit that had been "searching for weapons in a village" when it was ambushed while returning to base. (By the way, Logan identifies those who ambushed our men and woman simply as "hidden enemy fighters.")

Logan pressed a pair of Army commanders on this point.

LOGAN: Women are not supposed to be, according to the strict guidelines, are not supposed to be on [the] front line of combat.

COLONEL MARTIN SCHWEITZER: We do not assign our female soldiers to the infantry and the armor. We do attach female soldiers to units for a specific mission for a specific period of time, absolutely in accordance with Army policy ... Anywhere you go outside of the forward operating base you can, you know, run into the threat, or a threat.

Yet even after being debunked by Col. Schweitzer, Logan tried to press the issue with Brown herself.

LOGAN: The Army has very strict rules about women not being on the front line. And, I mean, there's no question that you were on the front line.

PVT. BROWN: There is no front line in Afghanistan or Iraq. You go out on missions. Whether it be humanitarian aid or, you know, help building schools, or pulling support for another unit while they're building roads, or searching for Taliban. You go out there and you do your job. And you don't know what's gonna happen. Anything could happen.

Oops. After being refuted twice, you'd think that Logan would have wanted to edit out the "front-line" theme in her story. But she didn't. Why let the facts get in the way of a good swipe at the U.S. Military?

Thank you, Private Brown, a real hero. And thank you to all our men and women in uniform. It's just too bad that journalists like Logan can't do a nice story without taking cheap, baseless swipes at you.

CBS Right....and you're surprised.

"Most men lead lives of quiet desperation"... until they get fed-up enough to finally say something about it!

What Ms. Logan doesn't understand is...

...that the "front lines" address is 1 &2 World Trade Center

CBS and Logan are both

CBS and Logan are both cheap....at half the price...if that.

She is a disgrace..so is CBS...period.

Don't let the truth get in the way

MSM reporters like Lara Logan remind me of the recent Volkswagen commercials where Brooke Shields accuses couples of having babies so they can justify buying the new VW minivan.  In spite of vehement denials from the couples who are standing within earshot, Shields persists in making these outlandish claims.  Likewise, no matter how soundly their stories are debunked, the MSM keeps repeating them incessantly.

Welcome to the era of unity, you racist!

Desperate to find something wrong with the Military

They love to spin everything they can to try and make the military look as bad as possible. It is really pathetic.

Censored Global Warming Videos

Remember Gulf war one?

"making the military look bad" took on a whole new meaning! Any President who is waging war would be an imbecile to base policy on what the MSM reports.

Mz. Logan's pretty exterior

Mz. Logan's pretty exterior belies the ugliness inside.

She seems to be the type that would say and do anything to get ahead.

And the left keeps telling

And the left keeps telling everyone they are just as patriotic as everyone else. Bull-crap. Their mind-set is always anti-American and they won't pass up an opportunity to use the press as a soapbox.

P!ss on all of them.

"Looter" Logan? Say Anything, Do Anything?

Well Logan has contributed to the break-up of at least one marriage.

She is also under investigation by the US for looting in Iraq.

Once again my take on that dummy Logan

It is still mind-blowing to me that I saw better journalistic skills exhibited by members of the VP's staff while deployed than anything, anything this dumb b!#$h has reported on matters military.

And some authority she is.  Less than 50 miles from her comfy hotel room in Baghdad (and even closer if you count places like Camp Victory and BIAP) was a story of great challenges and great humanitarian efforts just waiting to be written.  But did she go pursue it?  Nah.  Too busy shacking up with various dudes...

The problem with the wars

The problem with the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan is there is no clearly-defined front line.  So with woman being in combat units then they technically are on the front line due to ambushes etc.

What needs to be noted is how well female soldiers have aquitted themselves in the wars.

the front line in afghanistan is where the enemy engages you

i listened to this piece in the podcast and yes, i do recall the issue of women and the frontline being raised, but the story really seemed to be about how tough this woman's job was and how admirable and heroic she behaved (wait for it) on the front line.

this is not a conventional war where people have dug trenches or raised flags to determine turf. there are no uniforms on one side.

women's role in military operations is a complicated one. this story did have a few warts but raised issue successfully.

Lara Logan simply does not

Lara Logan simply does not understand, regardless of how much time she has spent in Iraq around the troops.

The difference in question is that Infantry and Armor units go on missions LOOKING for the enemy with the desire to engage (Fighting in Fallujah being the perfrect example).  They go to the field for weeks on end and perform the mission day in and day out 24 hours with little ability to stop movment.  They carry everything they need on their backs and they need a surprising mount.

The other units, including the one the soldier in question was assigned to go on mounted patrols, or set up temporary checkpoints to screen traffic in a hasty position from which they operate from vehicles and FOB's.

From my old Infantry and personal perspective, the issue boils down to physical capabilities.  A typical infantry soldier today is carrying a minimum of 100 Pounds of equipment while moving.  I carried more, roughly 108 pounds twenty years ago and was fortunate that I did not have to carry body armor or a kevlar helmut, rather carries most of the weight in water, batteries, radios, food, and ammunition.  I also carried minimum snivel gear of extra pair of socks, a 6 oz poncho liner and poncho and Troops today are still trying to carry that load in addition to the additional weight of body army and other protective gear.  No underwear, no soap, no comfort gear of any type.

What it works out to be is that a soldier will end up carrying all that he could, and more than he should.

If possible, the army would only hire people like me, 6 foot 7 inches tall and capable of carrying great weight, but sadly we take what is avaialble.  But I have never met a woman who could carry the full load and sadly few men who could carry my rucksack from years ago (And today it would SMOKE me).

When you come across an old E-8 in the infantry, at the age of 40 they look decades older due to the stresses of life living on the ground.  Much like "doggie years" we used to say that every years spent in the field aged you three physically.

To my mind, THAT is why women are not assigned to combat arms units as organic personnel.

Thank you for your service, bless you! I have two boys in the service right now, one just re-upped, he loves his extended family in the military (Navy). God Bless you for your service! My other son is a very proud Marine just back from Af'stan, gonna do another stint next year. I love the US of America's soldiers!!!  Our military ROCKS!!! Bless you!

First off, CBS knows

First off, CBS knows nothing about the military.  If they are reporting anything on the military you can bet they are wrong and it is just not the truth.

Secondly, with their agenda, is it any surprise that they have tons of people believe them?  I heard an avowed leftist at work squawking about this very story and filling any and all within sound of her cackling on how the military forced this woman into the action.

This idiot believed everything CBS said, with out question! So yeah CBS, when they lie (which is often) are believed by a large segment of morons.  CBS just needs to stay away from the military.

Most liberals are incapable of understanding nuances

That is why they constantly wish to categorize people and everything. To Logan, obviously, the military fights 'on the front line' so therefore, anyone who was in combat was obviously 'on the front line'. She has no experience and no understanding to help her realize that there is no 'front line'. In this day and age it is much less likely that there will be any 'front lines' again so the policy of not assigning female soldiers to infantry and armor units is all appearance and no substance.

Women in the military have gotten what they wanted, equality, finaly...and the only thing that a female reporter can do is to try and criticize the fact. How Ironic.

Hey, I got the wrong "CHANGE"!

Military Service and the Frontline Myth

Our soldiers, sailors and marines both male and female put their life on the line the minute they report for training.  Most military operations are preformed behind the employees’ only door due to the inherent risk involved.

From personal experience I can assure you that night-ops on the flight deck of an aircraft carrier are hairy wherever you maybe steaming.

Obviously most civilians and 'journalists' don't have a clue.  Most service members are grateful their mothers don't either.

God Bless them everyone.
