In an error-ridden op-ed in Friday's Los Angeles Times (10/17/08), Pepperdine law professor Douglas Kmiec makes the outrageous claim that Barack Obama "has held himself out as a bridge builder" on the issue of abortion. Kmiec then advances a fallacious case that a faithful Catholic can vote in clear conscience for Barack Obama.
A "bridge builder" on abortion? Is Kmiec kidding?? Consider:
-
Obama has forcefully vowed that his very first act as President would be to sign the Freedom of Choice Act (FOCA). FOCA claims a "fundamental right" to abortion throughout all nine months of pregnancy, and no government body at any level would be able to "deny or interfere with" this right. Even the pro-choice NOW readily acknowledges that FOCA would literally "sweep away hundreds of anti-abortion laws [and] policies."
-
Obama has a 0% rating from the National Right to Life Committee and 100% rating from NARAL Pro-Choice America.
-
As a state senator, Obama opposed Illinois’ Born Alive Infant Protection Act, which would have protected infants who were born alive and survived their botched abortions. And what’s just as bad: Obama has repeatedly lied about this during his campaign.
-
The Supreme Court ruling in Gonzales vs. Carhart upheld the federal ban on an abortion procedure called "Intact D&E" (aka "partial birth abortion"). In this procedure, a doctor dilates a woman’s cervix, reaches up into the uterus, grabs the unborn child by the legs, and pulls it down into the birth canal. The doctor then uses a long pair of Metzenbaum scissors to puncture a hole in the back of the baby’s skull. A vacuum tube is then inserted, and the contents of the skull are emptied out. Yet on the day the Court upheld the ban on this horrific procedure, Obama said, "I strongly disagree with today's Supreme Court ruling. . .I am extremely concerned that this ruling will embolden state legislatures to enact further measures to restrict a woman's right to choose."
In other words, Barack Obama has given every indication that, as President, he would be the most ardent defender of unrestricted and unfettered abortion ever to hold the nation's highest office.
Kmiec also misleadingly asserts that Obama "add[ed] language to the Democratic platform affirming the choice of a mother to keep her child." The truth is that the Democratic Party's new platform on abortion is actually more pro-abortion than ever – a fact that even pro-choice leaders have acknowledged.
In addition, in his discussion regarding Catholics, Kmiec makes no mention of the fact that the Catholic Church's opposition to abortion dates back to its earliest days of existence. (See Didache 2:2, A.D. 70). First-century Jews were also very much opposed to abortion.
In July 2004, before he became Pope Benedict XVI, Cardinal Ratzinger reiterated, "Christians have a 'grave obligation of conscience not to cooperate formally in practices which, even if permitted by civil legislation, are contrary to God’s law. Indeed, from the moral standpoint, it is never licit to cooperate formally in evil. [...] This cooperation can never be justified either by invoking respect for the freedom of others or by appealing to the fact that civil law permits it or requires it'."
Douglas Kmiec was once a respected member of the Catholic community. He is no longer. He has embarrassed the Church and scandalized the truth.
Shame on Dr. Kmiec. Shame on him.

October 20, 2008 - 05:25 ET by Rush FanAs an alumnus of Pepperdine University, I'm disappointed with Douglas Kmiec. It's not his endorsement of Barack Obama that bothers me, but his weak and fallacious argument.
Pepperdine University is a Christian university with conservative values. It has a top-notch law school. Kenneth Starr is Dean of the Pepperdine Law School, and Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alioto is a Distinguished Visiting Professor.
Douglas Kmiec does not appear to meet the high standards of Pepperdine.

Please tell me you aren't really that foolish. On the off-chance that you bother trying a little rational thought, consider the monumental stupidity of what you just said: People should be charged with child abuse for opposing the murder of a baby? Of course, I'm sure considering the child just "an unwanted fetus" for as long as you feel like it helps reconcile that moral dilemma in your mind.

October 20, 2008 - 12:06 ET by lotrHow does one reply to such arrogance and stupidity? (other than it is drive-by troll so pay it no heed...) The troll is basically saying that it is preferable to kill the human being in utero, that We know better whether its life is worth living or not, that we can forecast with amazing precision (far better than numerical weather prediction) what kind of life will result when the baby is unwanted or is "poor." To put this ignorance into context, there really ought to be an opinion poll with the following question: "Do you, now, wish that you were aborted then?"

October 20, 2008 - 08:08 ET by sshuffield70I've been very disappointed with Matthew 25 Ministries, a local chairty here in Ohio butting it's head into this race. They made a website for Obambi explaining he's "pro-life". Of course, we know Obambi is pro killing babies. They're not getting one red cent of my money either.
Went to a Palin rally on Friday and had a great time seeing all different types of people there, including a boisterous African-American woman giving support. Gee.......does that make her a racist?
A misunderstanding...
October 20, 2008 - 10:11 ET by CortillaenI'd heard about this from another friend and found it pretty hard to believe, so I did a couple of quick searches. The group that has endorsed Obama is a PAC, "Matthew 25 Network", and appears to be completely seperate from the charity, "Matthew 25 Ministries". The latter has put out a press release on the subject, and another brief article quotes Wendell Mettey (the pastor?) on the subject as saying, "It would be counter to our philosophy and our mission to endorse a
political candidate, nor are we permitted under our not-for-profit
status." This looks like a good group just getting the flack for a bunch of idiots using a similar name.

Bishop Asks Catholic Voters to "Save our Children!"
October 10, 2008
Bishop Robert Hermann, Archdiocesan Administrator, Archdiocese of St.Louis. Published in the St. Louis Review.
I Thought You Should Know: Save Our Children
Save our children! More than anything else, this election is about saving our children or killing our children. This life issue is the overriding issue facing each of us in this coming election. All other issues, including the economy, have to take second place to the issue of life.
Save our children! Many people in Germany supported Hitler for economic reasons even though, as his programs advanced, he put to death millions of Jewish people. He ended up wrecking the economy together with the country of Germany. How are we different if we vote for pro-abortion candidates for office? How can we help change our political and legal situation to protect innocent children and support a culture of life?
Save our children! When I speak to some so-called good Catholics, I am shocked that they are quite ready to vote for a pro-abortion candidate under almost any circumstance. I find this hard to understand. We have heard the word "abortion" so often that perhaps we no longer associate procured abortion with the killing of children, yet that is what it is. The term itself can be misleading. The dictionary tells us that it comes from a Latin word that means "to disappear or to miscarry."
Sometimes abortions simply happen because of natural causes. That is why this word abortion, for many people, apparently does not really connote the destruction of children. When a human agent induces an abortion, that human agent is taking the life of one of our children.
Save our children! How can a so-called good Catholic vote for a candidate that supports laws that take the life of innocent children, when there is an alternative? If there were two candidates who supported abortion, but not equally, we would have the obligation to mitigate the evil by voting for the less-permissive candidate.
Save our children! How can a so-called good Catholic vote for a candidate that supports laws that justify the killing of a child that survived a botched abortion? How can such a so-called good Catholic receive the Holy Eucharist?
In Chapter 10 of St. Paul's first letter to the Corinthians, he states: "The cup of blessing that we bless, is it not a participation in the Blood of Christ? The bread that we break, is it not a participation in the body of Christ? ... You cannot drink the cup of the Lord and also the cup of demons. You cannot partake of the table of the Lord and of the table of demons."
Save our children! Have some of our so-called good Catholics become so hardened against the Gospel of Life that they believe that other issues outweigh the Gospel of Life? Have some of our so-called good Catholics put politics ahead of the Fifth Commandment, in which God states: "Thou shalt not kill"? Do some of our so-called good Catholics, who may go to Mass every Sunday and receive the Holy Eucharist, really believe that voting for a pro-abortion candidate, when there is a clear alternative and therefore no justifiable reason for so doing, is really not voting to have children killed? This election is all about saving our children!
Save our children! I have no doubt that there may be some so-called good Catholics who are reading this column and who may be really angry about now. I ask the question "Why would such a person be angry?" If we do good deeds, then our conscience is at peace. If we do evil deeds, then our conscience bothers us. It is my hope that this column will lead some of our so-called good Catholics to study the Catholic Catechism.
Save our children! Some of our so-called good Catholics may have hardened their hearts against the real understanding of induced abortions, that they can no longer see that this involves the destruction of our children. "If today you hear his voice, harden not your hearts!"
Save our children! Supporting induced abortions is not the greatest sin in the world. A greater sin is the refusal to repent of such a serious crime or the denial that this involves the killing of innocent children.
Save our children! I have used this terminology again and again penetrate the defenses of anyone who in the past may have put personal, economic or political interests above the issue of saving our children. The right to life is our most fundamental right, and to defend this right on behalf of the most vulnerable is a great privilege and is worth giving one's life for. Policemen and firemen always risk their lives to save human life. Why should we not risk our own reputation to save our children?
Save our children! You can see by now that I do not believe that this column by itself will change hearts. The issue of abortion involves serious sin, and to overcome serious patterns of sin requires grace. If you are still with me, may I suggest that you join me and many others in praying the daily Rosary from now until election day for the sake of life. Why not pray the family Rosary every night between now and the general election. The Rosary brought down the Iron Curtain. It can also help us turn around the culture of death to a culture of life.
Save our so-called good Catholics who ignore Catholic moral principles when applied to our political life. Pray the family Rosary daily. Pray the family Rosary for our so-called good Catholics who could use your love and your charity. Pray for our so-called good Catholics who ignore serious Catholic moral teachings and still receive Holy Communion. Love them by praying the family Rosary for them. Don't debate with them. Intercede for them. Praying for them is more fun than fighting with them.
Save our children and save our so-called good Catholics who have abandoned Church teachings in favor of personal gain. Pray the Rosary. Pray it every day. Get the whole family to pray the Rosary daily. Prayer is more powerful than contentious arguments. Spread the word to other families. In praying the Rosary, children's votes count as much as adult votes. Sometimes they pray with purer hearts than we do. If you are disgusted with the TV news, then turn it off and turn on the prayer Internet. What we hear in prayer leaves us in peace. When we pray for our country and for our fellow citizens, we are filled with peace. St. Paul tells us that our warfare is not against flesh and blood, but against the principalities and powers and the spirits of darkness.
Prayer is our protection. Let it also be a protection for our country. If you want to make Satan angry, pray the Rosary for the sake of Life. Pray that as a nation we will choose leaders that will say "no" to the culture of death and say "yes" to the culture of life. Save our children! Pray the Rosary
We will, we have

Weak arguments
October 20, 2008 - 09:22 ET by KC MulvilleKmiec’s arguments are especially weak. He claims that you can vote for a pro-lifer because abortion is just one way to defend life, and Obama more than makes up for his support for abortion by defending life in other ways. That argument is ridiculous, because Obama actively supports an anti-life agenda with abortion. It isn’t as if Obama is just weak in a couple areas of pro-life. He’s actively supporting the anti-life position.
And how about the ways in which, Kmiec claims, Obama is strong? In this article and others, Kmiec cites the various ways in which Obama “defends life,” unlike McCain. But that’s the obfuscation. Kmiec blurs the distinction between the goal (defending life) versus the political and social methods used to achieve the goal. In other words, Kmiec argues that because McCain chooses a different method to achieve peace, McCain must not be pursuing the same goal. But that’s absurd.
Kmiec can argue that Obama’s public assistance programs are more effective in reducing poverty, but actual statistics deflate that argument. If we’ve learned anything about poverty in the last forty years, it’s that government programs unintentionally promote poverty, rather than relieve it.
The other argument is that it’s better to reduce the number of abortions than to actually oppose it outright. (Why? Are we offending someone?) The plan is to reduce the number of abortions through economic assistance, giving the mother less cause to pursue one. But use that same argument about theft, and you see where the logic fails. Does it make sense to reduce the number of thefts by giving potential thieves economic assistance, rather than to oppose theft outright? Is that a “practical” alternative?
Finally, the "unity" of red and blue states is not a serious argument. That doesn't count as a chip to be traded against his anti-life agenda. Unity requires compromise, and Obama has shown little of it.
exactly
October 20, 2008 - 12:21 ET by lotrThere is only one way to significantly reduce the number of abortions, and that is to first unmask it for what it is (thereby bringing about a change in heart in the tolerance of such a brutal, barbaric "procedure"), then outlaw, or heavily restrict, the "procedure." When Bill "the Bozo" Clinton claimed that "he reduced abortions," he was again employing smoke and mirrors (as is his MO) in that the actual reduction was merely window dressing in comparison to the total numbers.

Mr. Obama, you are not a
October 20, 2008 - 10:13 ET by bradbenj5952Mr. Obama, you are not a Christian despite your claims to the contrary. It is clear from scripture that "by their works ye shall know them". Any person who claims to be converted by the Holy Spirit and a follower of the Lord Jesus Christ who can at the same time support the murder of the most innocent among us is a liar and follows the "father of lies". I have no concerns about accusations of judgementalism on this matter because "no murderer hath eternal life abiding in him." John 3:15. If you spent more time actually reading the Word - and believing what it says - rather than listening to what Jeremiah Wright, Louis Farrakhan and other "great biblical scholars" say about it, then you'd probably come in on the side of the Lord rather than the party you have chosen to "enrich" yourself. Your treasures are as corrupt as your spirit.

October 20, 2008 - 10:29 ET by bradbenj5952"Again the word of the LORD of hosts came to me, saying, Thus saith the LORD of hosts; I was jealous for Zion with great jealousy, and I was jealous for her with great fury. Thus saith the LORD; I am returned unto Zion, and will dwell in the midst of Jerusalem: and Jerusalem shall be called a city of truth; and the mountain of the LORD of hosts the holy mountain. Thus saith the LORD of hosts; There shall yet old men and old women dwell in the streets of Jerusalem, and every man with his staff in his hand for very age. And the streets of the city shall be full of boys and girls playing in the streets thereof. Thus saith the LORD of hosts; If it be marvellous in the eyes of the remnant of this people in these days, should it also be marvellous in mine eyes? saith the LORD of hosts. Thus saith the LORD of hosts; Behold, I will save my people from the east country, and from the west country; And I will bring them, and they shall dwell in the midst of Jerusalem: and they shall be my people, and I will be their God, in truth and in righteousness." On the subject of the interesting former Republicans who have drunk the Obama KoolAid, let's remember that in 2000 there were a surprising number of democrats who endorsed George W Bush because he was 'a uniter, not a divider'. Of course, you can unite all you want but your opponents don't have to join you.
Apparently, there are a fair number of people who would give up anything for political peace. Even their money and freedom. It's stunning to watch a person of principle just throw themselves off a building intellectually. I attribute a lot of it to the Iraq war. Kmiec won't say it but I'd bet that it is really what drives him. It's irrational but powerful.
