Let's ask again: Where is the national media? The sex abuse scandals at the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) continue to grow. Just since May of this year:
- A high school athletic coach was charged with 12 felony counts of sexually assaulting an underage girl, including "five counts of sexual penetration with a foreign object while the victim was unconscious and one count of possession of child pornography." "[P]olice said they believe there may be other victims." The man was also a special education assistant (link).
- A former Special Education high school teacher was sentenced to three years in prison after charges of lewd conduct, child molestation, and abuse. The alleged crimes involved four of his "particularly vulnerable" students (additional link).
- A high school principal was arrested for child pornography on his home computer. Authorities also discovered that he "had posed as a 12-year-old girl in an online chat room and engaged in sexually explicit talk."
- A high school teacher pleaded guilty and was sentenced to six months in jail for having sex with a minor. County deputies found the teacher and the underage female student in the back of a car in a parking lot.
- A band teacher was arrested on charges of possessing child pornography on his laptop computer.
- A high school girls' volleyball coach was fired after a lawsuit surfaced alleging he had a sexual relationship with a female student at his previous school.
But there's more: Steve Thomas Rooney, a former assistant principal at an LAUSD middle school, was arrested last week - again (Thu. 9/18/08). After already being charged for molesting three students, Rooney was arrested on charges for molesting a fourth. Rooney now faces as many as 18 felony counts (LAT/NB). Rooney was assigned to his job at the middle school in August 2007 even though the District knew that police had investigated him about an alleged sexual relationship with a student at his previous job at a high school. That former high school girl has since testified that Rooney impregnated her. (LAT coverage) LAUSD removed two senior administrators from their posts in May for mishandling the case. But guess what? The district quietly returned the pair to work. Then a third administrator, a high school dean, surrendered to face charges that he withheld evidence regarding Rooney and one of the underage female students.
Earlier this year we wrote how KNX reporter Steve Feldman exclusively reported that "21 teachers and administrators have been yanked from [LAUSD] schools in the past year because of allegations of inappropriate sexual contact with kids." That was in May. What is the total number now? We also wrote of how Feldman questioned LAUSD Deputy Superintendent Ramon Cortines over the phone about the scandal. Cortines became agitated by the questioning and actually hung up on Feldman (must-hear audio). In discussing the scandal with KNBC-TV in Los Angeles, Cortines defiantly responded, "This is not out of the ordinary for school districts all over the nation. These things happen."
"These things happen"? Where's the outrage? Where's the media coverage?
Since 2002, the media has frolicked in covering decades-old allegations of sexual abuse by clergy of the Catholic Church. In fact, they still take joy in hammering the Church, even with misinformation and falsehoods (as we've chronicled here, here, here, here, here, here, here, and here).
Let's say it again: When it comes to the abuse of children, it sure seems like the national media doesn't get too worked up unless the words "Cardinal," "bishop," or "priest" is in someone's job title.

Conservatives just don't
September 22, 2008 - 23:09 ET by jdhawkConservatives just don't get it. Liberals don't give a damn about anything or anybody that doesn't further their ability to garner even more power than they already have.
Castigating the Catholic Church attempts to punch in the gut the 90% of Americans that belive in God. God is in "direct competition" with liberals on a host of issues. That is. unless His son can be somehow called a "community organizer."
We get it.

Oh, we get it. It's just that the steady drumbeat never lets up:
The Cultural Marxism of the left is in full operation in it's long march through the schools:
(There're those friendly psychologists again.) But, ipso facto, the public schools (read indoctrination camps), the teachers unions and the teachers are doing the work of the annointed and if they slip a little, well, OK. But Catholics and all other Christians are pathogens to be destroyed. It goes on and on. We can't ever give up. But we get it.

Here's a little test people can take to find out how well they've been indoctrinated.
But, be careful if you seek help from a psychologist, you might just end up believing Global Warming is real.

Making the Right Wrong
September 23, 2008 - 13:20 ET by nofateGreat find, HK. But I'm not sure if I believe Anesi's conclusion: "T. W. Adorno returned to the University of Frankfurt, where he amused himself as a principal figure in the Frankfurt school of "critical theory", producing a Freudian-Marxist melange of pseudo-scientific speculative foolishness that is now, thank God, thoroughly discredited." (my emphases) While I agree that it is "pseudo-scientific speculative foolishness", there is a huge circle of people in which it is not only NOT discredited, but embraced. We all know who that might be and their numbers are huge. See here, for example:
And, from the second link there:
Doesn't sound to me like it's been thoroughly discredited, expecially by our friendly psychologists. I.E. your global warming example, which was also discussed here. Noel Sheppard was talking about the left's ability to make the right look like the bad guys here:
After reading about the strategy and tactics they are employing to achieve their long term goals, and hearing Rush and others discuss it using other terminology, I am convinced that the whole thing is an effort to (to paraphrase Gramsci) Pathologize the Right. In their long term strategy, circa late '20's - early 30's, the "right", i.e. conservatives- constitutional originalists and especially Christians- were identified as "pathogens" to be destroyed (as a system of thinking and governing).
Until the advent of the repeal of the fairness doctrine and the appearance of shows like Rush, they pretty well had us boxed in, institutionally (other than a few escapees like Hillsdale, Grove City, William F. Buckley, Regnery Publishing, and of course, the great Ronaldus Magnus). But with the appearance of the internet (thanks Algore), sites like NewsBusters and numerous others, have made the escape from their little social experimentation laboratory almost complete. (I can't say enough about the service that NewsBusters is performing in getting out the message that there is another side to all this MSM indoctrination. It allows a league of writers to publish free-thinking, thought provoking articles as well as a large contingent of commentarians, some of whom are accomplished enough to feed ideas and information back to the staff of NewsBusters. And of course, ultimate thanks to Brent Bozell/MRC, the parent of NewsBusters.)
Almost, because we conservatives need to somehow overcome and then reverse this perception in the MSM/academic indoctrinated public, that consevatives are racist, homophobic, mysoginistic, authoritarian nazi fascists by default. I get the sense that it is just now coming into realization that the left has managed to almost pull off a huge coup without the intended victims (us conservatives) ever being aware of what was going on until too late! With the publication of the book "Liberal Fascism" to connect a lot of the dots from many other books and articles, my eyes were finally opened, especially to the amazing transfiguration of conservatives into nazis! HELLOOOOO, nazi=national socialism=socialists including all of socialisms relatives like liberalsm and progressivism. The apple truly doesn't fall far from the tree.
I know I've been on a rant about this "Pathologizing the Right" stuff for a while now. I just find it amazing how they seem to get away with it still. I wish I had the writing skills and (as importantly) the time to research and write about this specific topic, like Noel does on global warming. Someone will eventually take it up, I guess, in the meantime I'll just rant on in the occasional comment when time allows :-).
Be well, HK.

September 22, 2008 - 23:24 ET by LiberalliesChicago Public Schools and suburban public schools have the same problem. Women teachers constantly being caught having sex with teenagers in their schools. The media stays quiet and in many cases they actually defend the act by claiming that that is every high schools boy dream.
But oh my goodness, if someone even thinks that a priest or a Catholic is having sex with a minor, the media goes into a frenzy, anti-Catholics from both sides of the eisle jump out of every freaking hole on planet Earth to condemn the Churc, priests, etc, etc.
The double standard of Liberals and a handful of Conservatives on this matter is pathetic and embarrassing.
Many Liberals do not care about adults having sex with children. In fact the ACLU, the only woman and the super Liberal Justice on the supreme court and many other Liberals in power want the consensual age for sex to be dropped to 12.
Just look at super Liberal countries in Europe like Holland which have passed laws making 12 the consensual age for sex.

September 23, 2008 - 00:48 ET by maggieqpublicAbout 15 years ago a California school district employee (not L.A.) admitted to me that the ‘Union’ doesn’t do a very good job of getting rid of ‘bad apples’ in the classroom. And I thought he was talking about teaching skills. Too bad the MSM ignores this appalling scandal.
Look at these sentences
September 23, 2008 - 00:56 ET by usbeefOnly 3 years for lewd conduct, molestation, and abuse? Only 6 months for having sex with a minor? These judges are helping their liberal teacher and teacher union allies.
Being a Catholic myself there are very few things that make me more pissed off than attacks on the church. It's not just the sexual abuse double standard but all the myths and lies that are constantly spread around about the church. All that tells you is that God must truly smile upon the church and its people that do so many good things. If God didn't smile upon his church then it wouldn't be under so much critisism.
I am frustrated by the liberalism that has infiltrated the Catholic church though. The council of bishops has taken liberal positions on world events on their website. My Catholic church for college students is peddleing "go green" propaganda. The priest poked fun of president Bush once. I could go on and on. As a grow older I no longer believe the pope's or bishop's views hold authority over my own.

September 23, 2008 - 01:19 ET by liberal_bug_zapperWhy the answer to your headline is in your headline...
It ain't the Catholic Church.... so it isn't a story. The teachers in LA are just teaching sex ed... it's a part of the school curriculum. No issues here.

The problem is over time.....
September 23, 2008 - 04:27 ET by thgrantI think what offended people most about the Catholic Church was the way priests were moved from church to church to protect the priest. It wasn't the pedophilia, though it was certainly a part, it was the 30 year cover-up. How could they keep priests who had molested children? In some cases the priests had been protected for decades!
No one is protecting the teachers and principals here....they get accused and the school administration doesn't rally 'round....the administration cooperates with the law.
No one other than perhaps...
September 23, 2008 - 05:54 ET by JohnMcGrew...the administrations, unions, and even courts. The national media doesn't seem interested either. It appears as though the school district moved other administrators around after investigations of abuse. I really don't see the difference between this and the various Catholic scandals. At least Catholics can punish the church by withholding donations. Taxpayers don't get that choice.
Huh?

What? It's just about sex
September 23, 2008 - 09:21 ET by Mistah BittermanPerhaps this is the sort of "change" that NObama had in mind when he voted to teach sex education to kindergarteners. This from the sycophant supporters of failed president Bill "you might want to put some ice on that" Clinton. Sex scandals are only newsworthy when a republican taps his foot in a men's room stall, or a conservatives Veep nominees daughter is found out to be pregnant. These people's moral high ground has hit rock bottom and are they are starting to dig. Oh what am I saying they have no morals

September 23, 2008 - 11:30 ET by Kenny BunkportPedophile scandals are certainly an area where liberals benefit from a corroborating media. With selective coverage, the MSM has portrayed the Catholic priesthood as a randy bunch of sex deprived perverts who are out of control.
The truth is that every profession where men are in close proximity to children will attract pedophiles. Teaching, coaching, and day care are three professions where pedophilia is rampant. The media either ignores or downplays these problem areas. Obviously, because these are liberal approved institutions.
This one-sided reporting reminds me of the MSM using Sarah Palin's daughter's pregnancy as proof of the failure of abstinence education. They conveniently ignored the THOUSANDS of teenagers who get pregnant every year DESPITE extensive public school birth control education.
