Imagine if Barack or Michelle Obama's e-mail had been hacked. Would the reaction from the folks at the Los Angeles Times be so muted? If an Obama were the victim, it's easy to picture Times editor Tim Rutten penning a hissy-fit op-ed, angrily demanding a federal investigation, and trying to formulate how the McCain campaign was directly involved.
The Times relegated the story of Palin's e-mail account being hacked to the "National Briefing" section, buried in the middle of page A16, with a puny 85 words, in Thursday's paper (9/18/08). (See the image of the story.)
The New York Times? The story didn't even make it to the actual paper; it only went as far as their blog.
The Washington Post, meanwhile, at least put the story on page A04 on Thursday. Sunday's paper will feature a general-interest technology column on page B02, related to Palin and the world of hacking. Well ... at least they've printed something.

September 20, 2008 - 21:36 ET by MazziHere's the deal. If Palin was a Dem, those email files would probably have been full of all kinds of illegal, immoral or ignorant things. There would probably have been horrible things written about her co-workers, nasty jokes, vicious comments about her friends and so on.
The MSM has GOT to be incredulous. You just know they combed through those emails - no matter how unethical it was - with the pompous attitude of the *press*, and they came up with... nada. How is that possible? (I'm surprised they are not suggesting that she did this herself just to make herself look good.)
You know that they are stumped. How can this woman be so honestly nice? Why can't they prove it's a facade? Surely no one could really be that honest and kind and still be sucessful?
That's why she is such an enigma to them. The elitists don't understand that in real life America, people don't have to stab each other in the back, throw others under the bus and cheat to get ahead. Fortunately, Sarah is the real deal, and fortunately there are enough of us that still recognize that.

September 20, 2008 - 21:51 ET by Kenny BunkportYahoo might still bring the story out. AP spun the story that Palin was an idiot for trusting Yahoo security. They basically implied that people who trust Yahoo security are stupid and deserve to be hacked.
I just wonder if Yahoo is just going to take the smearing sitting down, even though it's made them the target of ridicule and will affect their subscription numbers. Or will Yahoo drag the story out in the open in order to salvage their reputation.

Yahoo's security procedure for changing an email account password is rather poor and this really isn't a "hack" at all.

Nice link.
September 20, 2008 - 23:27 ET by stratmanNice link. Thanks.
Yes and No.
Technically you can call it a "crack" - something the MSM ignorantly fails to properly identify malicious activity such as the Palin exploit.
Hackers originally were people that found helpful workarounds to coding issues. Then hacking took on the meaning of someone that was beneficially attempting to help someone else determine soft spots in their networks and applications, such as security issues. Now this type of activity is called "white hat hacking."
Mischeivious or malevolent activity such as the Palin exploit is an example of "black hat hacking" and is therefore acceptable in today's vernacular for the media to call it a "hack", though I dislike the historical imprecision compared to "crack".
The guy in your link's media presentation says it isn't really a hack. He is wrong. The original definition of "hack" has long ago been co-opted by the MSM and the public, something that happens regularly with language.
This may be classified as a
September 21, 2008 - 01:06 ET by usbeefThis may be classified as a "hack" to the general public but not to me. It doesn't bother me that the media uses the term but I agree with the owner of the site that it is a buzzword in describing something that requires no technical knowledge or skill to do. As an IT person I usually see a hack as something that requires some level of technical knowledge. Perhaps the headlines should say, "Palins email account exploited".
As for the politically correct terms it doesn't matter to me. I use the term hacker all the time to describe what would actually be a cracker in the politically correct world of IT. Hacker is just something I and the rest of the public are more used to saying but you are right about the polically correct terms.

September 21, 2008 - 13:10 ET by stratmanThe term "hacking" is a general term, like the word "cars". An "exploit" is a subset of hacking, like "Toyota" is a subset of cars. A "brute force password attack" is a further subset of exploit, like "Corolla" is a further subset of Toyota. Hacking is the correct general term for the Palin exploit.
As inelegant as it may be, a brute force password exploit is a hack. Not all things take genius or elegance to be broken, and a hack is not defined by its complexity. Like it or not, language evolved and the Palin exploit is a hack, colloquially and technically, and should be identified as such.

September 20, 2008 - 22:30 ET by needleOh Great! I just won a side bet with myself (I could not find any takers) concerning this matter. Now, if I just chip in a few bucks to my winnings, I can buy a cup of coffee.

"Do you believe that Rove was behind the swiftboat attacks on John Kerry in 2004?"
"Oh why, well yes, of course! " he slobbered.
I continued quickly:
"...then you expect me not to hold Obama's campaign responsible for this?"
His slobbering ground to a stop. He gave no actual answer.
These people believe that the ends justify the means. They hate the Patriot Act when it is used to stop Terrorism (because they hate America) but they have no problem disobeying the 4th amendment and breaking other federal laws when it comes to destroying Sarah Palin. (Because they hate America)

September 21, 2008 - 11:36 ET by Wildcatter1980I was reading elsewhere on the 'Net and it was amazing to see all the far left wingnut loons who have serous cases of BDS, RDS, CDS (Conservative Derangement Syndrome) and now PDS twisting themselves around and around in their convoluted attempts to dismiss the illegal accessing of Gov. Palin's personal email account because of allegations that she conducted official government business there.
These nuts who think that Pres. Bush and Vice Pres. Cheney are secretly listening in on their personal conversations won't even bat an eyelash over the illegal accessing of an email account because they now think they can "get the goods" on someone they hate and/or fear. The simple idea that our Constitutional rights apply to all regardless of who they are or what they believe in escapes these nuts completely.
If they had their way, we'd be overwhelmed by a government run a muck. Law enforcement agencies would regularly hire private citizens to spy on others and turn over what they dig up, because as you say, in their eyes, the ends justify the means.
It is only a respect for our Constitutional rights that keeps the various government entities in check. In other words, they know that they cannot have a case stand up in court if key evidence was obtained in violation of the Constitution and/or other laws.
New York Times silence is catching
September 21, 2008 - 00:03 ET by Lame CherryFor those who do not know a great deal about Lawrence Sinclair's real story as it has been so suppressed, he related an interesting note this past week in the New York Times was phoning him often for his story, they were telling him.
The reality, they had no intention of printing the facts about Barack Obama using cocaine and engaging in sodomite sex with Mr. Sinclair.
Instead they were keeping tabs on him for who do you think?
Mr. Sinclair noted that when someone in the Obama camp sent out forged letters "by him" retracting what he said, then the New York Times was all over him going to print the story that Sinclair had retracted.
This is the paper of Obama support like all. If one will recall a blogger covering the Phil Berg story talking to an Obama aide at his office, the aide laughed and said they wouldn't comment on any story until it appeared in the NYT, LAT or WashPo.
See when liberal papers cover for liberal crooks, they can laugh as the New York Times not printing stories protects all of these criminals in this usurping of the US election process.
The US government under George Bush has a responsibility in making certain the free press is just.
