Marvel's Captain America: Let's Go After Tea Partiers!

(This post has been UPDATED; see end of entry.)

It seems that even the most [what appears to be] level-headed of comics writers these days just can't resist the pressure to delve into the "progressive" political cesspool. This time it's Captain America scribe Ed Brubaker. Hunting Muses lays it out:

Enter Captain America.

You know, the WW2 hero who died recently and just came back to life to fight a 20 ft tall Red Skull in front of the Lincoln memorial. I had heard a lot of good things from Ed Brubaker. I picked up some trades shortly before Cap’s death, read them, and then finished out Bru’s run because they were great. Right up there with Geoff John’s Green Lantern series as what I want from a comic.

Then Brubaker had to go and not only insult me, but violate the core of what Captain America is all about in issue 602 “Two Americas part 1″. Here are 3 consecutive pages from the comic to help you get a full context:

Savor the lines a moment:

“A grassroots anti-government army”

“…looks like some kind of anti-tax thing”

“I don’t exactly see a black man from harlem fitting in with a bunch of angry white folks…”

Of course they’re all being led by an insane man according to the comic, and Captain America is there to stop them.

First of all, the very idea that the tea-party movement is “whites only” is not true (but then, how many black people are in Boise Idaho in the first place?). Second of all, let the full idea sink in: Captain America is going to fight an “anti-tax, anti-government” movement.

What’s next? Captain French is going to fight wine makers? Is Captain Britain going to beat up some… British stereotype? Hey, I remember an anti-tax, anti-government from around the late 1700s. They had some real rebels in there with names like Washington, Jefferson, Franklin, Hancock, etc etc. How about after this Cap beats up on today’s tea-party movement, he go back in time and beat up those protesters?

What’s even worse is seeing the reaction around the internet. Some people are cheering at the thought of Cap beating up “tea-baggers”.

I've written enough about this sort of nonsense over the years; it got to the point (along with the ridiculously pricey issues) where I asked myself "Why do I continue to support these guys?" I don't mind if occasionally a writer goes off on a storyline like this, better still if the writer at least tries to balance out their inherent liberalism put to paper. A lot of comics writers were lefties in the 70s and 80s; however, their biases were not nearly as overt as that of the current crop of authors. Steve Englehart's awesome "Secret Empire" series in Cap in the mid-70s was a not-so subtle analogy of Watergate. Yet even Steve didn't hit us over the head with a brick ... even though he could have (Richard Nixon was pretty much thoroughly disgraced on the left and the right). In the 80s Mark Gruenwald's superb "The Captain" storyline, which had Steve Rogers replaced as Captain America was decidedly leftist, yet again not brick-over-the-head so. John Walker, the new Cap, was a manic reactionary, but he certainly wasn't a racist (his partner, Battlestar, was black), and if anything he had an excuse for his mental state: Gruenwald had a right-wing extremist group murder his parents (ironically, the same one Brubaker is currently using as his "Tea Partiers").

All Brubaker is doing is echoing the same tired, old media elitists that continually denigrate and belittle folks like the tea partiers and those who elected Scott Brown in Massachusetts. "Racists." "Bigots." "Stupid." "Crazy." "Childish." Etc.

And y'know what, Ed? Keep it up and you and your company are gonna go the same route that Air America and MSNBC are following. Straight. Down. The. Toilet. And I'll keep spending my money elsewhere -- outlets that don't insult my intelligence or my beliefs, thank you very much.

UPDATE: Just read more about this "Two Americas" stuff and it's made me even more nauseous:

Where has the Captain America from the '50s been the past few months, and what part of our modern world has welcomed him? And what will Steve and Bucky do when an old enemy tries to become a revolutionary? TWO AMERICAS begins here!

If Brubaker means to have the Tea Partiers "welcome" the Cap of the 1950s, then, frankly, he is even more of a radical "progressive" loon than I had thought. In the 1970s, aforementioned Marvel scribe Steve Englehart decided to "explain" the story behind the Captain America that was seen in the 1950s. (You may be aware that in "standard" Marvel continuity, Cap was thrown into suspended animation at WW II's end and thawed in the mid 1960s.) Essentially, a guy had stumbled upon, while doing research, the formula by which Steve Rogers became Capt. America. He approached some government highers-up and proposed that the "super soldier" program be started anew. However, the formula that had been unearthed isn't the perfected version that was used on Rogers. Tests showed that it caused the subject to slowly go insane. Nevertheless, our researcher befriended a new "Bucky" (the name of Cap's original partner) and both decided to use the [unperfected] formula on themselves. They then briefly go about "resuming" the roles of Capt. America and Bucky for a time. In issues #153-156, we see that the new crime fighters personify anything but America's ideals, not to mention those of the original Cap. They're basically Joe McCarthy on steroids, with a mix of J. Edgar Hoover thrown in for good measure (remember -- they're slowly going "insane"). The real Cap's then-partner, the Falcon (who's black), not to mention the black population in general, are called various racial epithets by the crazed duo, but eventually the real Cap and Falcon defeat the reactionaries. They're put into suspended animation, and eventually [re]surface later -- the fake Cap as the Grand Director, the leader of a Neo-Nazi movement.

Associating a few characters that possess some of the worst attributes imaginable with the contemporary Tea Party movement is just plain disgusting, period. Brubaker isn't even original as he's basically rehashing an old storyline done by former Cap scribe Mark Gruenwald (may he RIP) in the 1980s, even using the name of the group "Watchdogs" to "represent" the Tea Partiers, that "right-wing extremist group" noted previously above.

Gag me with a spatula. I'll just reiterate what I said in my last paragraph before the update.

UPDATE 2 (Feb. 10 at 11:00am EST): Fox News.com is reporting that any future references to "tea baggers" in the book's title will be removed:

A "tea bag" reference in a recent Captain America comic book that has angered the Tea Party movement will be removed by Marvel Comics in future editions, the story's writer told FoxNews.com.

Ed Brubaker, who wrote the story, told FoxNews.com he did not write the "Tea Bag The Libs Before They Tea Bag YOU!" sign shown in the edition, insisting that the words were added by someone in "lettering or production" just before being shipped to the printer. It will be changed in subsequent editions, he said.

"I don't know who did it, probably someone who thought it was funny," Brubaker wrote in an e-mail. "I didn't think so, personally. That's the sign being changed to something more generic for the trade reprint, because I and my editor were both shocked to see it."

Personally, I doubt that, else why didn't Brubaker and Marvel apologize to -- or at least inform -- the Tea Party of the "mistake" (and let them know that no further references would be made) ... when they first noticed the "letterer's addition"?

So let me get this straight

So let me get this straight - libs are looking to comic book heroes to save them?

pretty much

theyre spreading their garbage all across comics now. i read a first issue of a series called "Siege: Embedded" that has a man that looks like Glenn Beck and is a tv show host that forces himself to cry onscreen by thinking of sad or horrible things before the segment. the character in the comic is a douchebag and is supportive of a villianous character that leads the national security when it comes to people in costume. Marvel has been going more noticably left wing lately and if they keep it up, they will lose my business completely.

I guess Captain America has now morphed into Captain Amerika

...or is it Captain Comrade?

-Dave

Thanks, Obama.

Hey RD, How about instead of Marvel's Captain America...

Marxist's Comrade Amerika?

Mitch,

LOL - That works, too.

Thanks, Obama.

I heard he has USSA

I heard he has USSA triple-stitched on his tights now.

Well they turned that into "truth, justice, and all that stuff". Liberalism seems worse than kryptonite.

In the 80's my favorite was

In the 80's my favorite was Grimjack.

I really need to read the

I really need to read the whole comic to get more context.

Brubaker chose a teabagger group in Idaho to not have any black people in it. OK. I can see why that irks you.

But not EVERY anti-tax  / anti-government notion / faction is benign.

of course,

balboa. But Bru's analogy is as subtle as a foghorn, Idaho Tea Partiers or not. And again, he's not even original with it. Gruenwald already did this, and in a much less overtly lib way.

I hear ya'. But I'd wait it

I hear ya'. But I'd wait it out, see where it goes. The Heroic Age is coming!

That's always true

balboa (waiting, that is). But I have virtually no faith left in Marvel or many other writers/companies in the field. And Bru wrote some of The Authority a little while back, where the radical super-group took over the US government ... b/c it didn't like the way it was doing things!

And there are many, many more examples besides Bru ...

So what now: back to Kid

So what now: back to Kid Colt reprints?

Nope --

I'll just enjoy my Marvel Essentials collection!

BTW, why is it that right-leaning comics stories are seemingly the "controversial" ones, at least among the comics folks themselves? Anyone remember Frank Miller's Batman going after al-Qaeda?

Haven't really noticed any

Haven't really noticed any other than that particular one, but it seemed Morrison's point was both interesting and then tainted with a personal grudge of some kind.

Haven't noticed

what -- right-leaning stories or the controversy associated with them? (Good luck naming conservative-minded stories, this past decade in particular.)

Right-wing stories being

Right-wing stories being deemed controversial.

Reading around, a lot of fans felt like the teabagger stuff was heavy-handed, while some thought it was accurate, and others not accurate at all.

But a lot of them had problems with it simply from a story-telling POV, that it was rushed, that the whole thing seemed contrived for Cap.

I hope you're not taking The Authority

Seriously.   It's meant to be a over the top comic book, as most of the Wildstorm line-up.   It's a bunch of Anti-heroes who have over the top backstories and over the top adventures.   And as I recall, it didn't end so well for The Authority.

Well sure, syv

... but it's message was always radical, leftist and anti-conservative. Period. It was a wet dream for today's crop of writers.

Agreed, Bal,

the SDS and the Weatherman Faction certainly weren't benign.  And they were certainly anti-tax/anti-government.  Just to help you out there and name two that came to mind.

balboa

"Brubaker chose a teabagger group in Idaho to not have any black people in it. OK. I can see why that irks you."

Who the hell are you calling a teabagger? You dont know what the term means?

bal, This may (will?) come as a shock to you, but the people who

...founded this country were anti-tax and anti-government, too.

There is a reason for that, and it has to do with the fact that we are now on the verge of a financial collapse as a nation, with an out-of-control federal behemoth of a government that is essentially broke, yet still trying to find new ways to siphon money from a rapidly crumbling private sector.

This cannot continue much longer.

-Dave

Thanks, Obama.

Ugh.

First Spider-Man, now Captain America.

I guess they are trying to portray the Cap as a reincarnated Commie lover because the original Captain America fought against Nazis, who were Nationalist Socialists, the very thing that is the backbone of DuhOne.

What's next, they will write that Captain America is going to go after Tony Stark because he's a Capitalist and demand him to "redistribute" the Iron Man's wealth?

Yeah, that's what I was talking about.  It's a regular puke fest.

Bad enough that Tobey Maguire(spider-Man movies) was a liberal, but when they did that to the comics, I was done.

You're welcome, ant

I do have to give Sam Raimi credit for unapologetically showing off the American flag the way he did in Spider-Man 3 though, much to the dismay of some PC libs and critics. I've heard some rumors it might have been a response to Superman omitting "the American way".

Looking at that Marvel link, they even did an issue where Spider-Man teams up with Stephen Colbert. Reminds me of the Super Mario cartoons where the Mario Bros. saved Milli Vanilli.

Yeah, that moment with the

Yeah, that moment with the American flag in SP3 really, really made that movie...so bold...

And I said something remotely similar... where?

But that little enjoyable moment showed me Raimi had the backbone not to cave into anything similar to what was done with Superman, especially in the PC hollywood culture. Heck, he fact that it made some people really angry made it all the better.

First Spidey sells his soul to Satan,

or at least the marvel verison of him, wiping out his marriage to a hot red headed supermodel to save his aunt.   Which is still selling your soul to the devil.   Now, heroes who butt kiss just to sell copies.

Just to play devil's advocate

in the early 60's, Superman revealed his secret identity to John F. Kennedy.   Stating, if he couldn't trust the president of the united states who could he trust.   And even did a story of JFK, helping out Superman by playing Clark Kent (bet the secret service was happy to hear about that one) at a party where both were needed.

What makes this story better or worse than Spidey or Savage Dragon kissing Obama-butt.

Progressive like a disease

"Progressive" always reminds me of a metasticizing disease ....starting in one part of the body and eventually spreading, infecting and destroying the life of the whole body....

you're finally starting to see!

Cuz that is exactly what it is.

Cap Last Supper

Cancelled my subscription the minute I read this issue

Brubaker's run on this title has been pretty good. I cancelled Captain America and will be cancelling anything else written by ed brubaker for that matter.

http://www.ifanboy.com/comics/marvel_comics/iNOV090463/captain_america/602  look at the comments here.....

should clarify my statement

Brubaker's run has been pretty good.... up to Captain American Reborn mini when he brought back Steve Rogers. It's been boring, putrid and completely forced across the board. Even people that aren't into politics GET it; that this was completely forced. For me, I felt like I was going to cancel this title for the last couple months anyways. Brubaker just made my decision ridiculously easy..... Previous issues saw Cap meet with Barrack Obama. Yes you read that right, Steve Rogers got a pardon from the Messiah himself for his previous transgressions. Namely that Steve Rogers fought against forced meta-human/mutant registration by the government. It was a vomit inducing scene and the only reason I hadn't cancelled then is because brubaker and marvel completely screwed up and didn't get the issues out on time so I had a pile of stuff while i waited for #6 of Cap Reborn to come out.
So dig that, a few years ago before Steve Rogers died, he was fighting against the government.... now somehow Brubaker has completely twisted this...

Welcome back, Cap.

Cap vs. the STRAW MAN!!!

Epic.

Re Idaho

Of course, pick on Idaho, it's part of that flyover country that liberals wet their pants over, where people respect family, God and guns, etc. They would never put the comic in liberal Vermont, which has the same % of black population as Idaho. I'll bet there aren't even any intellectuals in Idaho.

slick

Actually there are some but we confine them to Boise since we know they dont have the common sense God gave a rock.We lose alot at traffic intersections. When the traffic lights says Dont Walk they run across the crossing and get hit.

Can someone with the IQ higher than a rock...

I'm getting a little ticked at these ignorant bufoons comparing Conservatives to Nazis. If they had half an ounce of sense in their pointed little heads they'd know that their own movement is so close to Nazism it's sickening.

(1) Liberals give full support to unionism...so did Hitler...he gave speeches for the largest trade union in Germany.

(2) Liberals want the gov't to be the primary supporter for the people...so did Hitler...quote..."We demand the state shall make its primary duty to provide a livelihood for its citizens." Source: Hitler's 25 Points, NSDAP, 1920.

(3) Liberals attack the rich for existing on unearned income(investments)...so did Hitler...quote, "abolition of incomes unearned by work..." Source: NSDAP.

(4) Liberals have been trying to use gov't to take control of large corporations for decades...so did Hitler...quote, "Nationalize all business which have been formed into corporations." Source: Hitler's NSDAP, 1920.

(5) Liberals bitterly complain about business making profits off war...so did Hitler...quote, "...personal enrichment from war will be regarded as a crime against the nation...therefore, ruthless confiscation of all war profits." Source: Hitler's 1920 NSDAP.

(6) Liberals and unionists insist that industry must pay employees a share of profits in addition to wages...so did Hitler...quote, "We demand profit sharing in large industrial enterprizes." Source: Hitler's 1920 25-point NSDAP.

(7) Liberals have for years tried every trick in the book to take private land from owners. Liberals have used tools like environmental issues, right of way, etc...so did Hitler...quote, "We demand...expropriation of land for communal purposes...abolition of rent and prohibition of all speculation in land."

(8) "Nazi" was gutter slang for the verb "to nationalize". It is no secret that Obama and his cronies wish to nationalize healthcare and our banking system.

(9)  The official title of the Nazi Party was "The National Socialist Workers Party of Germany". Liberal policies are nothing short of socialism.

(10) Hitler came to power by turning the working class, unemployed, and academic elite against the conservative republic. After Der Fuhrer's election ceased being a political conspiracy and was transformed into a fashionable social phenomenon, party membership was especially popular with educators, bureaucrats, and the press....Liberals have these self same groups in their back pockets.

(11) Being a Nazi was "politically correct". They called themselves "The Children of the New Age of World Order" and looked down their noses at everyone else. As Hitler acquired more power, he referred to his critics as "The Dark Forces of Anarchy and Hatred". Political Correctness and "liberal media smear" is a tactic often used by the left.

(12)  Right-wing fanatics of the "Old Order" who protested firearms registration were arrested by the S.S. and put in jail for "fomenting hatred against the Government of the German people". Liberals are anti-gun ownership, anti-war and anti-military.

(13) Public schools rewrote history and Hitler youth groups taught the children to report their parents to their teachers for anti-Nazi remarks...It is no secret that Liberal policies regarding education aim to completely indoctrinate school children to accept values counter to their parents. Even parental rights are under attack by liberals.

(14)  Pagan animism became the state religion of the Third Reich and Christians were widely condemned as "right wing fanatics". Atheistic liberals are doing the same thing today.

(15)  Evil was declared as being good, and good was condemned as being evil. Today, liberals hearld every godless abomination their little minds can conceive and applaud it as good, when historically such acts were seen as detestible and destructive to society; not to mention loathed by God.

No folks. Don't listen to the propaganda campaign levied by the media. They follow the same demonic script Hitler did and their movement will one day meet the same end.

You forgot: (16) Hitler

You forgot:

(16) Hitler killed 5 million Jews.

But you seem to not mention

But you seem to not mention the total was over 12 million.  Hitler and teh NAZI's saw the Jews as a scapegoat and did well.  Sorta like the TEA Partiers are now scapegoats.  Hitler imprisoned, enslaved and killed anyone who opposed him.  Sound familiar.

Sorry, 6 million Jews. So

Sorry, 6 million Jews.

So when Obama imprisons, enslaves, and kills 6 million Tea Partiers, I'll consider the comparison as fair.

Are we imprisoning,

Are we imprisoning, enslaving, and killing tea party people?

Does it really need to get that far

I don't think that equals enslavement of tea party members.

How much of your money are you willing to give to the cause? Because I dont care to give anymore of my money to this bloated, corrupt, bottom-less pit!

Again, I'm not sure the situation right now calls for an uprising against the government to prevent a Hitler-esque regime. Not even close. Anything else would be wildly irrational.

I must have missed

The uprising part, but opposing the leftist policies and voting them out of office is my chief concern. But comparing population control government to the leftist that came before is certainly fair.

Part that bothers me, is you leftist seem to think if the Fed makes all of these decisions for you, you would some how be better off? Since when has that worked? Do you really think the HC bill will lower cost, and provide better HC for more people? Do you really think if the Fed taxes you and every other entity in this country for the energy they use, it will some how help you, our economy, and make for better living?

These are typical leftist policies for population control. When the Fed pays for your HC, they get to say what you eat, drink, do, and how much. They also get to decied what care you qualify for. When they control your Energy,  they get to say where you can go, how you can get there, and maybe weather or not your reasons for going are good enough. They control your lives through penalties and proxy. Why this doesn't bother you is beyond me.

My Gov. thinks I am dangerous, so be careful

That is thoroughly paranoid.

That is thoroughly paranoid.

Really?

The leftist already steal my money to pay for my poverty ridden retirement in the form of the bankrupt SS. And they steal from me to pay for others HC and other entities. In-fact they promise this crap to get elected, as they practice class welfare. So how much are you willing to contribute? 40%, 60%, more?

Our Gov now ridicules the very folks who grow the economy, and it's very citizens when they dont agree with their policy. Thugs,

But I am paranoid?

My Gov. thinks I am dangerous, so be careful

DDT info. It's pretty widely known by now that small amounts are highly effective, but that environmentalist radicals have been quite influential in preventing its use where it has been most needed, like the 3rd world. I just posted that one site; there's a ton more if you indeed Google any variation of "DDT millions deaths."

Hitler didn't only kill Jews (and I've got family that perished in the camps). He killed the weak. The infirm. The elderly. The *gasp* gay. He attempted to root out the weakest of the weak, along with all of those that would 'dilute', or 'not contribute to' the Aryan strength.

1.3Million 'dilutions' were killed in 2000, via abortion.

On a second note, not appearing in that list, hitler also was a HUGE environmentalist, right down to requiring factories to install indoor green space. He also arranged government subsidized vacations, concerts, plays, etc.

Interesting quote, apply it to today:

"The nature of Nazi rule was profoundly influenced by the style of leadership developed within the Nazi Party before 1933, and characterized by a peculiar combination of charisma and bureaucracy. The bureaucratic element had grown rapidly in importance after the electoral breakthrough of 1930 as the Party fought, with considerable success, to cope with the large number of new members and organize effective propaganda campaigns. In fact, however, its basis of authority remained not bureaucratic but charismatic, that is to say Hitler's absolute authority was derived not from his office as leader but from his exceptional qualities as an individual and leader in the eyes of his followers." quoted from NAZISM 1919-1945 Volume 2, page 198 (published 1984)(italics in original)

We dare not tempt them with weakness. For only when our arms are sufficient beyond doubt can we be certain beyond doubt that they will never be employed.

For whatever it's worth,

For whatever it's worth, back in the 70's a comic series was created and published north of the border called "Captain Canuck" and has been published sporadically ever since. It's still being published apparently and a movie is allegedly in the works.

This is why Captain America

This is why Captain America was killed off, to protect him from going liberal and out of character.  Superheroes can't be bleeding heart liberals even if comic book writers fill their universes with gay marriage and tons of bleeding heart liberal personalities.  Super heroes, most of them, torture villains for information.  They prescribe to the idea of interventionism.  They solve problems with violence.  They often times do not believe in moral equivalence.

I stopped buying comics in

I stopped buying comics in the late 80's as they were smaller and more expensive; I had a 200 dollar a month habit.  I guess I did the right thing.

No surprise here . . .

The comic book industry has not refrained from socio-political commentary in the past.

As early as the 1960's, Marvel Comics introduced controversial issues such as race relations and war into storylines, often mixing them with psychological issues confronting its superhoroes.  In fact, they prided themselves on it, and have ever since.

DC Comics was a little late to catch on, but by the early '70s, they were fully engaged.  For instance, they took a failing comic -- Green Lantern -- and partnered its lead character with another throw-away character -- the Green Arrow -- and introduced a storyline whereby GL's personal 'old-fashioned' values about good and evil/right and wrong, are challenged by the former-millionaire-turned-social-activist GA, who regularly berates him for not seeing the social wrongs in America.  The now-classic series was an instant hit, and revived both characters.

The '70s saw a turnover of writers in both companies as retiring writers who'd begun in the '40s were gradually replaced by young, college-educated writers who sought to mimic the contemporary films, TV, and rock music they'd been weened on.  In general, traditional values and patriotic characters became the butt-end of comic storylines.

The trends have continued to one degree or another to current day.  Today's customers are mostly adults.  If you haven't seen a comic book in a long time, I encourage you to open one up and see what's happening.  But a bit of warning in advance:  Not only have the storylines gotten very political, the artwork is extremely graphic in its depictions of violence and sex, both hetero- and homosexual.

Good points, Gal

I think, however, that even though the GL/GA stories were innovative at the time (with great art by Neal Adams), it still wasn't enough to save the mutual title.

Nevertheless, your 3rd paragraph is well-taken. Traditional values and patriotism became jokes. The innovative -- and risk-taking -- stories about race, poverty, pollution, etc. of the 60s and 70s dealt with issues that were very real ... not like our modern liberal cadre (a la Brubaker) who have to manufacture racism/Naziism/terrorism out of a quite legitimate movement. It's almost like some writer back in the 60s doing a comic story about MLK and the Civil Rights movement harboring hardcore communists and KGB members -- who were seeking to overthrow the US government and install a Red dictatorship. And now the Avengers will have to stop them!!

Funny, right? Now read modern Cap and a lot of the other spewings out there.

I agree, D S

You're correct that the GL/GA series ultimately didn't save the book, but it probably saved the characters from comic oblivion, and they made a comeback in the '80s (GA probably more than GL, who has seen a revitalization in recent years).

You bring out an excellent point regarding the difference between political themes in the '60s and '70s, and this kind of stuff today.

Of course, the market will ultimately determine whether this trend has gone too far, too fast, or is generally accepted by the fans.

Nothing new here...

For 8 years we read things like Boondocks and especially Garry Tredeau's Doonesbury doing everything from making Bush into a Nazi or Roman emperor to some sort of domestic "real" terrorist.

It is obvious the libtard left is very threatened by the "tea party" movement. From that DNCNN "news" reporter meltdown last year asking a father with his children if the message was about hating on Obama because of race (remember that one folks?) to town hallers having the GALL to question Democrats on taxes, we've seen them bedwet, drool, and emote like nothing else.

All the mindless mouth breathing moonbats on the modern left have are late night talk shows like Jon Stewart, "news"paper cartoons like this - which nobody reads much anymore, shows like Law & Order which slam Republicans, and of course DNCNN and PMSNBC, especially since Air America crashed and burned.

Whatever these troglodytes on the modern libtard left think about a "true" Conservative movement should not be given any more thought than the flush of a toilet - right where their ideology is sending this nation if we don't rise up and send them packing in 2010 and 2012.

Even Superman...

Even Superman was, for a short time, turned into a "social champion" and away from his stated mission of fighting for "truth, justice, and the American way." The excellent miniseries "Kingdom Come" by Alex Ross and Mark Waid showed Superman as the de-facto head of a "new world order" in which the superheroes of old (Green Lantern, Wonder Woman, the Flash) had to contain the "new breed" of superhumans who behaved with impunity, believing that no one could stop them. But instead of Supes, WW, et.al. being portrayed as conservatives, they were shown as either dithering pseudo-dictators (Superman) or bloodthirsty war-mongers (Wonder Woman), while former superheroes like Batman, Green Arrow, and Black Canary were seen as "urban warriors" who wanted humans to control their own destiny. In many ways, it's a confused script (especially with the addition of The Spectre and his human guide, Norman McCay) who convey an apocalyptic sense to it all. It sometimes seems jumbled, especially when the traditionally conservative heroes are portrayed as essentially helpless against the threat until the "new breed" of heroes break out of the gulag created for them in Kansas.

The biggest problem with comics these days is that the writers don't want their heroes to appear too powerful. This threatens liberal sensibilities, because liberals believe the world literally revolves around them. A Superman who can move mountains while simultaneously upholding traditional views is someone who makes liberals look like Lex Luthor. And the fact is, if more people behaved like Superman (yeah, we can't change the course of mighty rivers, darn it) and stood up for "Truth, Justice, and the American Way," we might actually see a more responsible populace - one not easily (if at all) controlled by the liberal elite.

Elliot S! Maggin, a writer for DC Comics in the '70s, once had Superman say, "There is a right and a wrong in this world, and that distinction is not difficult to make." But when liberals make wrong look right, and right look wrong, they pervert everything the original heroes stand for.

As Supes said in "Kingdom Come" to a group of new heroes, "Be heroes." We should all do that.

"I, Ronald Wilson Reagan, do solemnly swear that I will faithfully execute the office of President of the United States, and will, to the best of my ability, preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution of the United States, so help me God." That's the way to say it, not the way Obama and Chief Justice John Roberts screwed it up.

The biggest problem with

The biggest problem with comics these days is that the writers don't want their heroes to appear too powerful.

Or because a too powerful hero is boring and one-dimensional. If a hero isn't all powerful, then the struggle to fight evil is more unpredictable. If a hero has faults, it makes him appear more realistic. Wolverine is one of the most popular characters of all time. So is Batman. They both have faults, and they both have weaknesses.

Marvel is Dead to Me

Actually, they've been dead to me ever since the early 90's, after they fired a bunch of their great writers and artists (Chris Claremont among them). I saw Mark Gruenwald take Captain America into the toilet, and that was it for me. Gruenwald was always nothing more than a liberal sadist who didn't care about his characters at all; you could tell that by his work on DP-7. Other writers with few exceptions just kept racing for the gutter.

A few years ago (late 90's) I tried to read Marvel again, and it was nothing but wall-to-wall PC with slightly-edited cuss words being the standout feature. It was pedantic, boring, predictable, and really as far as art goes, soulless.  I see that nothing's changed.

I also love how we have the predictable "racists! racists under every bed!" faction here, warning us about the latent evil lurking in every tea party out there...that yet, despite million-dollar-salaries and the best journalists evar, the mass media has not been able to discover. Nevertheless, I know that eventually racists will be found (erm, I mean fabricated) and a few will be used to smear the entire group, because that's the way the media and their apparatchiks roll.

Of course, they'll never discredit the SEIU due to a few brutal thugs...

Don't forget the superhero--"Corpse Man"--!!

He can join with Cap'n to fight tea party crime.

Oh well

Another boyhood hero bites the dust.  Well, I havent bought a comic book in 45 years so I cant really boycott Marvel can I?

"I dont need to read a newspaper to know the world's been shaved by a drunken barber."

Walter Brennan, The Colonel, Meet John Doe, 1941

       If Marvel

If Marvel wants to destroy their company, who am I to stop them.

Re Mass Murderers

If you want to tally the death tolls of the world's mass murderers, Rachel Carson has to come first at about 100,000,000. Mao would be a distant second, followed by Josef Stalin. Adolf Hitler was a piker compared to those three.

slick

The left doesnt care.As long as they get the power. No matter whose life they destroy. The left are teabaggers. As much as they try to push that off on the Tea Party. They cant stand people who dont follow them like sheep.

D.S.

re: the update, depends on when he saw the "tea bag" edit I suppose. I don't know if that's something he might not be a part of or if was changed after his last pass.
