Maddow Slimes Limbaugh With Phony Quote (Updated 10/14 - Video Added)

  • Bookmark and Share

I'm sure the talk show host can defend himself just fine; however, the following shows just how low MSNBC will go to trash Republicans and conservatives any chance they get. On last night's Rachel Maddow Show, the host used a long-known ersatz quote supposedly uttered by Rush Limbaugh to, well, y'know, get some cheap digs in:
(BEGIN AUDIO CLIP)
RUSH LIMBAUGH, CONSERVATIVE RADIO TALK SHOW HOST (discussing Newt Gingrich's views on Judge Sotomayor): I didn‘t know why he retracted it and I still don't. I'm not retracting it. Nobody's refuted it. She would bring a form of racism and bigotry to the court.
(END AUDIO CLIP)
MADDOW: When you get called racist by the guy who says the assassin of Martin Luther King, Jr. should get the Medal of Honor, consider yourself honored. Also, nauseated.
For what's behind this "quote," we have to turn to the blogs as usual. Smash Mouth Politics has the definitive lowdown on this supposed Limbaugh utterance. First, its only source appears to be from Wikipedia, which, as everyone should know by now (especially hosts of major cable news shows!), is far from a verified, trustworthy bastion of information. Second, the quote has been excised and added back several times.
The earliest mention of the alleged quote was on September 9th, 2005 by zedlappy who wrote this about what Rush allegedly said: “You know who deserves a posthumous Medal of Honor? James Earl Ray. We miss you, James. Godspeed." [4/23/98] ”zedlappy” cited to a Wikipedia article as his source. For those newbys, Wikipedia is a cite that anybody can make shit up and it gets quoted as authority by idiots. Hereafter, every time I reference the Wikipedia article I am talking about this one. Unfortunately, it apparently has been edited many times since 2005, so we can’t know exactly what it said then. But now it attributes the quote to Rush Limbaugh, but lists it as “DISPUTED” because the article currently lists the source of the quote to a book “101 Persons who are really SCREWING up America“ by (2006) by Jack Huberman. Hereinafter I’ll call the book “101 Persons.” But note, the book came out in 2006 so it could not possibly be the source of the original Wikipedia article! ALSO NOTE: The Huberman book does not list a source!
My guess is that someone edited a phony Limbaugh quote into Limbaugh’s entry and then Wikiquote removed it when they realized that it was a phony. No media source links. No transcript links.

My emphasis. There's much, much more at Smash Mouth, the conclusion of which is that absolutely no one has any definitive source on this supposed statement from Limbaugh.

I mean, really -- Rush supposedly made this highly offensive statement in 1998, yet it took seven years for someone to make a note of it on the web? Are you serious??

If Rush uttered those

If Rush uttered those words, which are dispicable, Wikepedia and Maddow would not be the first or only broadcasts of the non-quote.

Can you imagine how many urinalists would have blogged, posted, quoted, re-quoted, printed, re-printed, interviewed with the obligatory concerned tilted head on PBS and bumper stickered this 'alleged" quote.

maddow is the mos disgusting and perverted a sport of nature as

the Left can dig up out of its self-referential autistic dirt-bag collection of hermaphrodites.

Rachel Madcow

Rachel Madcow disease....what'dja expect, legitimate commentary?

Wow, I'd be having my attorney filing a billion dollar suit...

...by now.  I swear, Rush really needs to do this because MSNBC has now crossed the line from even PARTISAN journalism to outright fabrication.  First the bit on Olbermann about the "Kill Him" business being brought up and now you have this maniac whore manufacturing something that Rush never even said.

God he has to bankrupt these bastards.

Unfortunately, some egghead

Unfortunately, some egghead liberal will believe this, someone like that moron Jen that posts on here when stupid comments like this are made.  That dolt actually laughed at the notion that Limbaugh should die for disagreeing with Obama.  The left is definitely warped.

When the people fear the government it's called tyranny, when the government fears the people it's called liberty!

Wait, Jen7 said this?  What

Wait, Jen7 said this?  What a b*tch.

A Phony!

There's no way Rush would have made a comment like that.  For one thing, by 1998 he was very popular and such a quote would have been everywhere.   Secondly, he has always spoken pretty highly of MLK.  More complimentary than I would be.

It's just another example of the load of crap that MSNBC throws out there on a daily basis.  Lies, exaggeration and fabrication, nothing more.

→ Demand an apology

Time to bring this bearer of Immelt's water along with her master.

The full effort of the Conservative cause should be brought to bear on MSNBC for this racist, hateful lie from Maddow.

We understand she feels a need to infuriate Blacks, like she might stir up a nest of hornets with a pellet rifle.

Maddow doesn't care about the veracity of her report, only that she can whip up some righteous indignation around the Democrat Plantation.

"The Rule of Law is the only thing that separates us from Democrats" - a Firefighter

Because Limbaugh knew that

Because Limbaugh knew that he was the target of the liberals since the inception of his radio program, he was careful to record each program and have a written transcript of the same.  So, for anyone that wants to really quote him, all they have to do is ask his program director.

To those that want to make shit up, I dare them to pinpoint the day that he uttered any such thing as this quote.  Limbaugh's recordings and transcripts of his program will show differently.

It seems that Maddow's "show" must be failing as she is attempting to revive it with BS about Limbaugh.  That seems to be the way of most of the liberals in her line of work lately.

Limbaugh, on his radio program, recently challenged liberals to NOT say his name or talk about him in any way for 30 days.  He challenged them that they couldn't do it.  It appears that he is right.

Frankly, I have listened to Limbaugh for years as a 24/7 subscriber and have never heard him say anything but supportive things about African-Americans. Two of his substitutes on his radio program are two conservative black men - Walter Williams and Thomas Sowell. They do an excellent job, by the way.

If you want to read about what a black man thinks about Sotomayor, read Sowell's three part piece on the subject here: http://www.jewishworldreview.com/cols/sowell1.asp.

Cards on the table

If Maddow is going to slander anyone's reputation, it's up to her to provide the source. Journalist, it's time for cards on the table. Provide the source.

Otherwise, it's slander.

Limbaugh

If there are 2-4 people that devote most shows to discuss Limbaugh, why not just watch Limbaugh?  She adds nothing but twist and spin.

Sue the bitch!

I think Rush should sue Maddow and msDNC for slander just for the hell of it. I'd like to see how the State-run Media would react too.

Semper suprene nitens

mixing memories?

Can any Limbaugh listeners from 1998 recall any sentiment of the sort being voiced?  It's curious that the supposed Wiki edit was in 2005, because in 2002 Rush did make a big deal out of the most tragic typo ever documented: Lauderhill, Florida's effort to honor James Earl Jones for coming to speak on MLK Day, for which the honorary plaque they gave him said "Ray" instead of "Jones" -- in effect thanking King's assassin instead of the great actor.  [See: http://www.snopes.co... ]

While I recall Limbaugh making a big deal of them thanking James Earl Ray, I'm not sure I've ever heard the name mentioned at any other time on Rush's show.

No matter, though -- Maddow's a lying sow who's happy to slander political opponents whenever the opportunity arises.

That is sad and hilarious at

That is sad and hilarious at the same time.

This is known as "slander". Sue the living $@#!# out of NBC

Maddow made the claim on national TV.

Zero evidence Limbaugh ever said it.

What's NBC's defense going to be?  "Oh, she read it on some website wih user-generated content."???

Limbaugh should sue them for $100 mil, at least.

Oh, and demand a retraction and a personal apology from Maddow

and watch how quickly that ever-present smirk disappears from her face.

And bring down GE along with it!

They get a kick out of killing American Troops anyway.  Don't imagine that's something Maddow would report on.

So while the Parent Company of Maddow's Network has admitted to doing business with Iran, in violation of sanctions, Maddow has to reach into the infinite realm of LIES to make her point of hatred.

What a maroon Mad Cow is.

Apparently, by being on

Apparently, by being on MSNBC - a network that has absolutely no standards of decency whatsoever - wretches like Maddow are given the license to say anything, lie about anything, and use any phony quotes they want - to advance their agenda of hate. It's like an insane asylum, where news and reality are twisted and perverted and apparently their equally sick viewers just eat it up.

The "Mainstream" Media: By liberals. For liberals.

Rush & PMSNBC

Recall a few weeks back when Rush challenged PMSNBC to not use his name or make reference to him for a whole month? Of course they backed down. He should have sweetened the challenge, and offered up few Million to the charity of PMSNBC's choice if they could do it.  Then, everyone could have legitimately lampooned them . . . not just us clear thinkers.

Amazing Ad Campaign

Rush doesn't have enough money to buy this sort of advertising.  Ever since the election he has been getting free publicity from the SCM, (previously the MSM...hehe).  His viewership and ratings have gone through the roof.

Rough Night?

Maddow's looking a little rough in this shot; maybe it's that high-def problem that I've heard talk of: http://pajamasmedia.com/instapundit/

And therein lies a huge

And therein lies a huge problem in the beloved media.  She doesn't care that the quote is false, she just wants to put it out there.  And once she does, at least 90% of her audience, 90 of the 100 people, will not look it up to find out, but will take what she has said and that's now what they think to be true.

Anyone who thinks the media being biased is no big deal, misunderstands freedom of the press completely, and misunderstands the size of the deal that it is.  Remember, the media is the main reason for the race-baiting, America-sucks-thinking, class warfare, nation bankrupting president that we have.

Desperation

Looks to me like this is a desperate attempt by Maddow to get the attention of Rush Limbaugh for herself and her silly MSNBC program. Rush won't bite, he never does. Rush decides what to use his three hours for, no one else.

slow death

Just mentioning Limbaugh's name is worth more ratings points than they are actually getting.

The speed at which Maddow

The speed at which Maddow has become irrelevant shows that without credibility you are only an entertainer. Which is sad for their news department, but much sadder for Maddow, who's show is over. Liberal takeover of the media is a huge reason the country has been misdirected.      TV lies...go outside.

I guess someone has to

I guess someone has to watch her/his show. As for me, I don't get my information from a guy with girl body parts. Too weird for me!

Leftists and truth

Leftists don't care about the truth. To them, "truth" is whatever helps the liberal cause.

I listen to Rush and have listened...

to Rush ever since he first went "National".  It is unthinkable that Rush would say what Maddow said he said.  Like many Liberal haters, she never listens to Rush but she will eagerly quote made up lies about the man if it fits her "hate Rush" agenda.  Typical for her type, she will never apologize and if she thinks that Rush will mention this on his show, in order to give her undeserved publicity, she is going to be sorely disappointed.  Jim Webster

Are all of these fakes too?

from http://newsone.black...

1. "I mean, let’s face it, we didn’t have slavery in this country for over 100 years because it was a bad thing. Quite the opposite: slavery built the South. I’m not saying we should bring it back; I’m just saying it had its merits. For one thing, the streets were safer after dark."

2. "You know who deserves a posthumous Medal of Honor? James Earl Ray [the confessed assassin of Martin Luther King]. We miss you, James. Godspeed. "

3. "Have you ever noticed how all composite pictures of wanted criminals resemble Jesse Jackson?"

9. "I think the media has been very desirous that a black quarterback do well.  They’re interested in black coaches and black quarterbacks doing well.  I think there’s a little hope invested in McNabb and he got a lot of credit for the performance of his team that he really didn’t deserve. "

Are all of these fakes?

Edit: well according to snopes.com, the "bone in the nose" and the Jesse Jackson quotes are true. We know the quaterback quote is true. We know the Mandela quote is true. I'm still working o the NAACP quote..

Well the NAACP quote is sourced to Jan of 1993 and the 12% quote is sourced along as is this whole quote ("Why should Blacks be heard? They're 12% of the population. Who the hell cares?"

So did the host mischaracterize Rush or error in the quote  she chose?

Do you want fair news or news biased in your direction?

Is snopes.com lying?

snopes.com sourced the bone in the nose and Jesse Jackson quote and verified those as true. The black quarterback and Nelson Mandela are sourced with their actual tapes. The NAACP quote and the "Why should they be heard?" quote is sourced in a print magazine called "Flush Rush" with air dates included in the original article.

I understand, this is known as a "lie" in radio conservatism.

I didn't leave the Republican party, they kicked me out.

Fraud

Very well could be. Since they call Hussein Obama's 'certificate of live birth' a 'birth certificate', there's no telling whatelse they're lying about. I'll bet you cite Wikipedia a lot, don't you? And this is typical of a liberal like you to avoid the subject at hand with diversions.

Shawn its all about

Shawn its all about context, no not pretext but context.  I know its a foriegn concept but if you want to be taken seriously then source your quotes and dates from Limbaugh radio shows so we can see what context he is speaking in.

Its like if I said gee you smell nice and you qoutesd me as saying "gee you smell.." without saying nice.  It is a simplistic explanation but one you might understand, hopefully.

Good point

As another poster pointed out before, shows are recorded and transcribed. That's REAL evidence.

But then, you're dealing with a fraud who's purpose here is divert attention away from the fact that he and Maddow are two peas in a pod. You know, the whole absence of criticism thing.

"I ask, Sir, what is the militia? It is the whole people. To disarm the people is the best and most effectual way to enslave them."

The context I see

The context I see is habitual sly bigotry. Yea, any of this can be nuanced away. But if someone is habitually using sly bigotry as a device, it seems a little whiny to complain when its thrown right back in your face.

I didn't leave the Republican party, they kicked me out.

It is revealing that you say nothing of rachel madcow.

How obvious is that?

Hence, he's a troll and a fraud.

SNOPES.COM is not always accurate, but if that's your true north

then have at it.

SNOPES has been known to get it wrong on many occasions.  I might as well start up some website proclaiming all to come and have the truth verified.

This is what you present as evidence, NWAHS?

Snopes used an interview

Snopes used a sourced interview where Limbaugh expressed regret for making those comments to call it true. It would seem absurd to express regret for something you didn't say. It would seem absurd to say you said something you didn't say. But hell, in radio conservatism thats a "lie."

I didn't leave the Republican party, they kicked me out.

Need for 'fact' checkers

There is no fact-checking organization that is not run by liberals and therefore politically biased. Politifact, Snopes, Factcheck, Wikipedia, all full of liberal bias and unreliable. Conservatives need their own factchecking organization with a fancy website and all, since the odds of one being put together that is politically neutral is nil.
