One Old Eccentric? MSNBC Thinks Not

By D. S. Hube | December 17, 2007 - 18:02 ET

During a question and answer session with about 100 people in attendance (in a town of only 1,374 people), John Edwards handled quite well a very unusual question.

An elderly man told Edwards that “something has been sticking in my craw” and explained that “a certain fella committed two murders in California and the jury found him not guilty. And all they said was, ‘It’s payback time.’ How are you going to have that come out in this election to combat one of your competitors?”

Edwards seemed puzzled, as most people in the audience seemed to be.

“The black jury in Los Angeles, the reason they found O.J. not guilty was ‘payback,’” the older gent explained.

“Payback for what?” Edwards asked.

For mistreatment by white America, the man said.

“What do you want the president to do about that?” Edwards asked.

“How are you going to get that brought out in your campaign? Will the same thing happen? If he should become elected, you think Al Sharpton, Jesse Jackson, Oprah Winfrey are going to let him forget about that and their obligation?” the man said, not identifying who he meant by “he” and “him.”

“I’m still not sure what it is that you’re asking,” Edwards said, a bit uneasily.

“Obama,” the man said, “has never said anything about payback for the problems the blacks have had getting their foothold in society.”

MSNBC's Tom Curry writes that it wasn't totally clear "but the man seemed to want Barack Obama to denounce the 'not guilty' verdict in Simpson’s 1995 trial." But the money quote, as they say, comes when Curry offers this:

This may have been just one old eccentric in a small town, but there is a racial subtext lingering in the minds of some voters in Iowa.

Now, from what evidence does Curry extrapolate that? Because one old man from a tiny town and with a [racially tinged] grudge asked an awkwardly worded silly question? This somehow means that there's some sinister "subtext" in the minds of "some" voters in Iowa? "Some." What a great way for MSMers to somehow "make a point." Curry continues to use that word later, too, when he writes

Some Obama fans say they plan to support him in the Jan. 3 precinct caucuses partly to prove that America has overcome racism and that the White House is open to someone who is, as Obama describes himself, “a black guy born in Hawaii with a father from Kenya and a mother from Kansas.”

And

Some Iowans insist that race plays no role in their consideration of Obama: “Black or white, it makes zero difference today,” said Kevin Miller, a dairy farmer who went to hear Obama speak in Monticello, Iowa, on Friday.

There can always be a "racial subtext" when a nebulous "some" is utilized. Moreso, too, when MSM reporters go digging for it!

I guess it would then be logical to assume that Curry feels that there's a "gay subtext" lingering in the minds of "some" Democrat Internet users since retired [gay] General Keith Kerr (at the time an unidentified Hillary Clinton supporter) asked a question about gays in the military?

The MSM will seize on any

The MSM will seize on any rickety shred of "evidence" to prove that there is a dangerous latent racism all through this country - especially in rural states. And they criticize "unsophisticated conservatives" of using anecdotal evidence...

There is racism in America

In the period from high school in Hawaii, to Columbia University and then to the streets of Chicago as a community organizer, Obama was the classic angry young black man, describing his world thusly:

"We were always playing on the white man's court -- by the white man's rules.  If the principal, or the coach, or a teacher wanted to spit in your face, he could, because he had the power and you didn't.  The only thing you could choose was withdrawal into a smaller and smaller coil of rage."

Obama’s once described the white race as “that ghostly figure that haunted black dreams.”

“That hate hadn't gone away,” he wrote, blaming “white people — some cruel, some ignorant, sometimes a single face, sometimes just a faceless image of a system claiming power over our lives.”

So, Obama hates his mama?

So, Obama hates his mama? Sounds like he needs a lot of psychotherapy. Perhaps he needs to quit the race and endorse sHrillary and her nationalized healthcare so he can get help with his rage issues.

In fact every one of the Democrats needs to drop out of the Presidential race for psychological therapy to deal with their self-hatred, rage issues, pathological lying, their projection of their behavior upon Republicans, and so forth. Democrats: the party that puts the fun in dysfunctional.

Voting for Obama to "prove"

Voting for Obama to "prove" America isn't racist makes about as much sense as putting females into foxholes to prove America is not "sexist".

How about we vote a Baptist minister into office to "prove" liberals aren't hypocritical intolerant bigots?

What the geezer was getting at

The geezer was not wanting Obama to condemn those dolts on the OJ jury, but was trying to make a brilliant point in how race is being used as a tool by certain people and parties but no one is addressing HOW THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY IS DEALING WITH PAYBACK.

Is Obama's payback to blacks for running in this race to get their votes so they will keep voting DNC. Yup you betcha.

It is not about racism, but race manipulation.

At what age does one

At what exact age does one become a geezer? Just checking. I want to know if I am getting close to this dubious stage in life.

doug, I was wondering

doug,

I was wondering that myself considering that our President is 61 and most of those running are past 60 or in their 50's (except for Obama). Why are we an age obsessed culture? People don't get truly interesting until they are past 40.

first you have to know how many "some" is

Some....... more than a couple, less than a bunch. more than a pinch less than dash. less than a spray more than a spritz?

Some idiots in the media have a problem with the idea of one.

One old guy with a problem.

One person One vote

One person responsible for his/her own problems

One womanizing President (2 if you include Kennedy)

One shooter from the depository.

feel free to add on........

The old guy was wrong; the

The old guy was wrong; the OJ verdict wasn't about "payback", it was about a very incompetent prosecution case that was completely refuted by the defense.

I performed an interesting

I performed an interesting experiment once.

We have a political club that discusses issues of the day and historic data.

What I did was transfer all the video tapes of the OJ trial to a set of DVD's. Then I took the time along with three others to confirm the judgements and transferred just the portions of the content that was presented in front of the jury being present.

Then this was shown to two sets of younger members who were mostly all aware of the outcome of the trial but were in school and only saw the news highlights at best in real time.

The group that saw the jury evidence only voted for aquital and the group that saw all the other stuff that was ruled out by the judge had their perspective tainted by the non admissable stuff and voted for conviction.

If any other trial ever goes to filmed coverage like this the judge should rule that only the time when evidence is being presented to the jury should the cameras be on because all the other stuff gets into the public perception and taints the process.

  Some 'journalists'

Some 'journalists' thought the Duke Boys were guilty because they were white and rich and the accuser was black.

Heck, some thought even if they didn't commit this particular crime that they deserved some sort of punishment anyway because they were white and rich.

I'm against racism. I wish

I'm against racism. I wish liberals and blacks would stop practicing it.

I'm 56 and I've been a geezer for years. All I'm missing is a good stout cane to wag at whippersnappers...

JeffC I'm not really

JeffC

I'm not really sure, but I think this guy was wondering if Obama getting elected as president would result in policies like racial preferences justified as "payback" for past injustices.  I would hope not, and I have not seen Obama saying that in the campaign, but I suppose that is a legitimate question.
