Just when CBS’s Superior Donuts makes me think it can avoid a racial argument, it jumps into something just as bad: insulting all Chicago police as corrupt. Why can’t we just watch a show that doesn’t have either?
In the April 10 episode “Painted Love,” Franco (Jermaine Fowler) gets inspired to paint a mural to his recently-passed friend and inspiration "Bam-Bam," who also happened to be a former gang member. What follows is an unusually (for this show) toned-down discussion regarding a controversial mural, with everyone having a different opinion on how it represents the neighborhood. The argument itself is ended quickly since the mural is painted over anyway. All in all, it’s almost hardly worth mentioning.
And then this happens...
Franco: Huh. Well, if it ain't Chicago's finest art critic.
Randy: I did something nice for you, so don't make me regret it. I took a picture of your mural before it came down.
Franco: Oh. Thank you, Randy. Come here. Mwah. (Chuckles) You even framed it.
Randy: Yeah, I'm a Chicago cop. Framing's what I do best.
That is literally the last piece of dialogue in this shaky episode. I almost feel sorry for the show since this episode was only ten seconds away from being only forgettable instead of defamatory. Alas, the verbal assault against against Chicago’s finest continues.
