Melania Trump’s speech at the Republican National Convention Monday night dominated the news this week, overshadowing other important stories and soliciting sexist attacks.
On this week’s AlliKat Show, Newsbusters reporters Katie “Kat” Yoder and Alatheia “Alli” Nielsen reveal that ABC, CBS, and NBC gave 178 times more coverage to Melania Trump (or rather, the similarities between her RNC speech and Michelle Obama’s 2008 DNC speech) than to significant changes the Republican Party Platform adopted at the convention on July 18.
While Tuesday morning network news shows spent 59 minutes and 25 seconds on Melania, they offered a mere 20 seconds on the Republican platform changes. Those 20 seconds came from CBS. ABC and NBC said nothing.
The party platform, not Melania’s speech, determines what the Republican party will support in the future, Kat stressed. “That’s a story the American people need to hear,” she said, “and not just in 20 seconds.”
Alli called out the hateful Twitter reaction to Melania’s speech. According to Vocativ, an organization focused on web analysis, Melania was called a “bitch” at least 443 times on Twitter in the seven hours surrounding her speech.
Whether or not Melania was responsible for copying Michelle’s speech, “calling her a ‘bitch’ doesn’t actually deal with the issue of plagiarism,” Alli said. “It’s simply useless, sexist, and hateful!”
