U.S. News’ Erbe Equates Conservative Christians with Radical Terrorists

Bonnie ErbeBonnie Erbe, contributing editor to U.S. News and World report and host of PBS' "To the Contrary" recently compared conservative Christians to terrorists.

A soon-to-be published study in the journal Reproductive Health that found states with a high level of residents who subscribe to conservative religious beliefs also have high teen birth rates sparked Erbe's September 18 observation that Christianity and radical Islamic terrorism share distinct similarities.

Erbe did not find this conclusion "surprising," and noted that "most of these ‘religious' states are also so-called red states." From there she bashed red states as uneducated and poor, and argued that those factors combined with "increased religiosity tend to intertwine and build on each other." Erbe offered as proof the following example:

It's been widely reported that Middle Eastern terrorists talk suicide bombers into committing murder by explaining to them that they will be heroes in heaven, their after-life reward will be that they are treated like kings and have all the advantages that elude them here on earth. These promises are believed by people with no money, no education, and nothing to hold onto but their religious beliefs.

So "red state" residents - poor, uneducated and with "nothing to hold onto but their religious beliefs" - are on a par with Islamist terrorists.

What's not surprising is that Erbe, who has argued in the past that abortion is a "good decision" in a recession and that religiosity "clouds" common sense would look so poorly upon those who ultimately take responsibility for their actions.

Poor uneducated soul.

Erbe sounds like the people she is dissing here, thoroughly uneducated.

Atta and many of the rest of the 9/11 suicide plane jockeys were well educated and came from comfortable circumstances. They were not from the ghetto or from the group made up of people without high school diplomas.

No, that group would include most of those in Hollywood who support Erbe.  Look it up girl!

okie that was great.  So

And Erbe has "old lady smell."

If she has not been to say

If she has not been to say Dallas, Texas, let her visit, and see how her trip goes.  Then she can go to Iran or Afganistan and go w/o care or security planning, (like freely traveling in Texas) and let herself get captured.   We shall see how the Muslims treat her.  If she gets out, let us see what she writes then.  M-B

Can you be a little more specific?  A wild weekend sexual encounter with what?

Um, Ms. Erbe?

You might want to check a few facts before you toss out your pronouncements.  Outside of the 3 state universities of Iowa, Iowa State, & Northern Iowa we have 33 private colleges and universities.  Also, three Nobel laureates including the recently passed away, Norman Borlaug, were born and raised in Iowa. Yet, with all that education, in a 2001 survey, 75% of us are Christian (52% Protestant & 23% Catholic).  By your standards, that shouldn't be able to work.

The truth is, you're an elitest snob who thinks that only those who think like you are intelligent.

Go away.  You bore us.

I noticed that she failed to mention that many of the red states have a very large number of minorities...  hmmmm

We know she is a bigot... but perhaps she is a closet racist too?

I've never know a Baptist

I've never know a Baptist Suicide bomber have you? I've never known a Catholic to fly a plane into a sky scraper. I've never known a Pentecostal to blow up an IED, have you? I know there are those notable misguided individuals that shoot an abortion clinic doctor. But you will never know us to be proud of these misguided individuals nor train our children to hate as Hezbollah does. No we are not terrorists. If we terrorize anyone I’d hope it would be Satan and his demonic minions, not our fellow humans.

Just goes to show...

how incredibly out of touch with reality the elitists of the MSM are.

Or...is she just lying through her teeth?  Hard to say for certain.

I know the Obama Ministry of Propaganda will repeat any lie they are told and are quite willing to mislead and flat out lie to the public for the benefit of the Won and his Marxist agenda, as they share the same dream.

I've had these arguments numerous times with apologists for islam at Jihadwatch.  They seek to show moral equivalence between the religions by claiming that there are violent passages in the Bible.  Then I or someone else points out just what you have...where are the Christian terrorist groups?  Why do we not read of their deeds in the news?  Pathetic.   Tired old arguments made and slammed to the ground over and over.

islam is a lie and Truth is killing it.

As A Baptist..............

As a Baptist I can attest to your post! Furthermore, Its been Baptist, Catholics, and other Christian denominations that have spurred help to many of the poor in these Muslim dominated countries! Just look at Bangledesh, for starters! How many Muslims have been put to death by these groups because of their beliefs? How many Muslim villages have been destroyed by Christian militants? How many Muslims have been beheaded by Christians? Bonnie Erbe ought to go visit the Taliban if she wants to expound on terrorism! Perhaps some on the job experience might change her perverted viewpoint!

The true evil

Exactly, FOTR. Erbe's an idiot. No Christian religion teaches that if you lose your life while murdering infidels you go straight to heaven. Who's the ignorant one? And perhaps the likes of Erbe fear Christians because we do oppose Satan. Whereas she'd like to think of Satan as a "victim" of ignorant, religious intolerance.

of other people's money."

We have known

"I've never know a Baptist Suicide bomber have you?"

We have heard of atheists (or should I say Left Wing Secularists?) who kill innocent women during bank robberies and plant pipe bombs under police cars (Sarah Jane Olsen, AKA Kathleen Soliea), who blow up  in Army recruiting stations (Willam Ayers) and call for the violent overthrow of the United  States government,  but Baptist Suicide bombers, I've never heard of any.

People like Ms. Erbe must

People like Ms. Erbe must add bricks to the widening foundation of religion-as-catalyst for the world's ills, as the digs are ephemeral and must be refreshed as often as possible. The frighteningly embraced enviro-faith doesn't like competition, after all.

I can only imagine (whilst wrapped in icy shudders) what an up-the-leg tingle AlterNet-ers get when they read about one of their own unfurling a piquant little barb, twirling their Snidely Whiplash mustaches in a darkened corner as if they've just witnessed a colossal one-up of our Creator.

I don't mind if someone is an atheist, irreligious, or simply doesn't care, that's their business; unfortunately it's rarely a two-way philosophical street with such people.

This, she says, is not a bad thing.

Take the case of an impoverished young mother of three whose boyfriend has lost his job and who is pregnant again. Erbe writes:

[I]n the long run, can we not agree that an unwed couple's decision not to bring a fourth child into the world when they are having trouble feeding themselves and three children is no tragedy? It's actually a fact-based, rational decision that in the end benefits the three children they already have and society as well.

Feeding and raising children is expensive. Tuition may be free at public schools but there are still books, transportation, food, clothes, medical care and activities that add up--way up. ... Add one more child and those costs rise as income drops.

Under such circumstances, Erbe says, abortion is "no tragedy: it's a good decision."

seductive logic of evil

I never cease to be amazed by the bizarre logic that evil uses to convince us that someone's life is either an excessive burden or simply not worth living.  The same 'logic' is echoed by (and even to some extent embodied in) contemporary Liberalism.

Yet they'll rationalize spending megabucks to save the life of one sea turtle or perigrine falcon.  And they try to portray the arbitrary killing of an unborn human being as some kind of societal virtue (as Erbe does here), while even just to mess with an unhatched condor egg is a grave sin.

Kono - fantastic!

Great TRUTH in your words:

terrorists.

Reminders for Erbe

Ms. Erbe needs to be reminded that Christianity is the majority religion in all 57 states.

If red states have higher teen birth rates, perhaps it's because Christian teens who make one mistake by getting pregnant out of wedlock are less likely to compound their sin by killing their unborn children.  Given the liberal influence on culture, it's hard to believe blue state girls are any less active sexually.

Equating us as terrorists?

Picture if you will your typical Sunday morning Christian church service.
Mixed into the congregation you have old ladies, young families, teenagers,
children and the occasional "seeker". In the bulletin, you read about
the upcoming bake sale to help raise money for the youth to go on a mission’s
trip to Ecuador to help a resident missionary build a school and assist in
feeding the poor. You read about choir practice after church and an
announcement of an upcoming baby dedication. Then as you look up from your
bulletin you notice the choir director and worship leader ascend the steps as
the choirs rises and the music begins. You begin to sing along to words like
these: “My Jesus, My Savior, Lord, there is none like You; All of my days, I want to praise, The wonders of Your mighty love.” People all over begin worshipping God for His love and
mercy. Soon after the pastor brings a message of hope for the hurting and a
call to repentance to those who have strayed.

This is a typical service. No talk of bombs or terrorism or political
foolishness. Who needs it when you have the Creator of all things as your audience?

To hear Ms Erbe, paint the Church of Jesus Christ as a terrorist organization shows how absolutely out of touch with reality people of her persuasion really are and how far they are willing to sink to silence those who oppose their godless, immoral views.

We Christians hold to a moral absolute, yes,  that is inextinguishable. Though governments and armies have tried to destroy it, the Church has withstood the test of time, unshakable in its principles and determined in preaching the Truth. If this is a crime, then I dare anyone…ANYONE, to embrace the alternative to God. See where it gets you. In time when sin has run its course and everyone has had their fill of the debauchery God’s absence will produce, men will be on their faces begging God to return to our land. Look to Eastern Europe. The vacuum atheistic regimes have created is tragic.

"If God is dead, somebody is going to have to take his place. It will
be megalomania or erotomania, the drive for power or the drive for
pleasure, the clenched fist or the phallus, Hitler or Hugh Hefner."

Well, so much for having

Well, so much for having her on my Christmas card list.  Yeesh!

I am struck dumb that here, in America, crap like this gets printed.  I know, I know, Free Speech, true, so true....but holy nikes, Batman, this woman drips vitriol.

Somewhere along the lines, someone musta done her wrong and she blames Jesus for it.  Her brand of hatred isn't run-of-the-mill.  She is taking Christianity way too personal, as though Jesus stood her up for a Prom Date or something and she is determined to ruin His name until the day she dies.

Unforgiveness is when you drink poison and expect the other person to die.  Erbe, you need some forgiveness, fast.

There's something wrong with

There's something wrong with people like this.

For all of erbe's snobbery

For all of erbe's snobbery and ignorance about religion, I would offer this:

I would rather believe in a supreme being I have neither seen nor heard than a sanctimonious, holier-than-thou, idiot who isn't fit to clean the bottoms of my "red state" shoes after a walk through the barnyard - who I HAVE seen and heard.  I wish I could turn off this wrinkled and haggard bimbette.

inaccurate science

Is it forbidden fruit - the more kids are warned about premarital sex, the more they investigate it?  Or, could it be the demographics create a class of kids who share the same sense of values?  You really can't make any valid assumptions with this type of subject - it is so opinionated.

I like Bonnie but she is wrong in this case.

Only in social sciences can someone - the "expert"- take a few "facts" and create a report to be applied to us all.

Body language

Just look at that body language in the photo of Erbe. My God, the arrogance is stunning. No less stunning is her elitism and overestimation of her self worth.
