Balance AWOL in WaPo, MSNBC Coverage of Atheists’ Inauguration Suit

Well-known atheist Michael Newdow is old news. Few mainstream media outlets are covering the suit he filed  Dec. 30 in U.S. District Court to strip prayer and any mention of God from the inaugural ceremony of President-elect Barack Obama. Of those that are reporting on the suit, however, the Washington Post and MSNBC gave Newdow and his fellow litigants a largely unchallenged platform to argue their case.

Newdow has long fought to impose a tyranny of the minority, failing in attempts to remove God from inaugural ceremonies in 2001 and 2005, and losing a U.S. Supreme Court battle in 2004 to remove the phrase "under God" from the Pledge of Allegiance. He was joined in the current suit by the American Humanist Association (AHA), the Freedom From Religion Foundation and others. The suit names U.S. Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts, Rev. Rick Warren, liberal California senator Dianne Feinstein and several other individuals associated with the inaugural events as defendants in their case.

In her Dec. 31 article, Post reporter Nikita Stewart cited a portion of the lawsuit that labeled the prayers "completely exclusionary, showing absolute disrespect to Plaintiffs and others of similar religious views, who explicitly reject the purely religious claims that will be endorsed, i.e., (a) there exists a God, and (b) the United States government should pay homage to that God."

Stewart also quoted Bob Ritter, staff attorney for the AHA, saying, "the group could win ‘as long as the judges uphold the Constitution.'"

The only counterpoint to the atheist view appeared in the final two paragraphs of Stewart's article and was pulled from a statement released by the Becket Fund for Religious Liberty.  Scott Walter, executive director of the Becket Fund noted in the statement "Newdow's lawsuit over the inauguration is a lot like the streaker at the Super Bowl: a pale, self-absorbed distraction. And anybody who looks at it carefully can see there's not much there."

MSNBC's report failed to include any kind of counterpoint to his new claim and simply quoted a Dec. 29 Washington Examiner article in which he stated, "Equality is important to me. We should show equal respects for all of our citizens, regardless of their race, gender or religion."

Both Fox News and the Examiner offered counterarguments to Newdow's claim. The Examiner's Kathleen Miller reported that Prof. Ron Allen, a constitutional law expert at Northwestern University believes "No one thinks the government is establishing a church by the president saying ‘so help me God' at his own initiative when taking the oath.  I don't think the courts will intervene."

Fox News invited Dan Barker, co-president of the Freedom From Religion Foundation and Peter Sprigg, the Family Research Council's vice-president of policy, to debate the issue during the Dec. 30 broadcast of America's News HQ.  Barker alleged that Chief Justice Roberts is "overstepping his authority in inserting the phrase "So help me God" in the presidential oath" and that it "is un-American...unfair...marginalizes.  It makes those of us good Americans who don't believe in God second-class citizens."

Sprigg shot back, "having a simple prayer at an inaugural ceremony doesn't come anywhere close to" violating the Establishment Clause in the First Amendment. Sprigg further argued, "Ironically, if a lawsuit like this were to succeed, we would in effect be establishing atheism as the national religion by barring any mention of God or any allusion to religion in any public ceremony."

Perhaps, as he asserted, Newdow does believe in "equal respects for all of our citizens, regardless of their race, gender or religion.". But with this lawsuit, he and his cronies clearly indicated their belief that atheists are more equal than those who believe in God.

Atheism is a RELIGION!

Atheism is as much of a religion, with standards, practices, written and unwritten doctrine, as the organized religion Atheists are trying to free the world of.

Hmm...

As a proud atheist/strong agnostic, I am curious to see what "standards, practices, written and unwritten doctrine" you are referring to.

Atheists are like cats. You can't really herd them that well.

Atheism and Conservatism don't have to be mutually exclusive. Just ask my fellow atheist and/or agnostic, George Will.

HMM?

Atheism - the theory or belief that God does not exist.

Sorry, I'm not a member of the FFRF or the AHA. I don't have any inside information on their ORGANIZATIONS.

My POINT is, you are no different than those who practice in an organized religion, other than what you believe. You have a belief, as do I. Even if we're not a member of an organization, we adhere to practices and standards based on that belief.

The problem with this lawsuit, is the ORGANIZATIONS filing it feel they have a right to not ever hear an opposing view. My problem is not with Atheists, it's the methods of the activists like Newdow and the ORGANIZED Atheist groups backing him.

I agree with your

I agree with your organization angle. I have nothing against atheists, but I would think that, by definition, a true atheist would not give a hoot about what religious people do or think, and just get on with their lives.

The fact that some of these zealots always have to take it to the next level and make a public showing about their non-belief is the problem. Is it really that overwhelmingly important to them that if there is a manger scene on a municipal property it MUST be challenged?

If you don't believe in anything, what's the big deal?

Live and let live.

Insecurity and Uncertainty

I believe that's the reason the activists challenge religion. They're insecure and uncertain about their own choices, so they have to destroy the choices of others.

Ad hominem.

In college heard that anti-gay people were so against homosexuality because they were insecure and uncertain about their own sexual preferences. Personally, I thought that was bull-&^%!.

I don't speak for all atheists. Please don't lay that crap on me personally, though. I'm not insecure or uncertain in my beliefs. If I was, I would simply confront those insecurities and adjust my personal beliefs accordingly.

Activists

Notice I specifically stated ACTIVISTS. I don't believe you're like those I'm referring to.

Sorry, double post.

Sorry, double post.

Me neither.

I'm not a member of those organizations, either. I don't personally know anyone who is. No need to apologize.

I believe that there are many "conservatives" who also call themselves "libertarian". This includes me. I personally (not speaking for others) also believe that the Republican Party would be wise to cast a broader net to welcome those such as myself into the Republican Party. Not me personally, just those who may be like me who are on the fence.

I am a registered Republican. Technically, I'm really a Libertarian, but there is no viable Libertarian party. Since there is NO WAY in hell I would ever call myself a Democrat (ugh...) this is where I put my chips.

atheist/strong agnostic???

I am sorry, I think that a little truth is a good thing. I am sure you are a nice guy and this is going to sound a little picky but you cannot be an "atheist/strong agnostic". The terms are mutually exclusive. An atheist by definition is certain of his beliefs. An agnostic questions and by that questioning is searching for truth. You can be one or the other but not both.

I agree..

You are right. I am a nice guy! Don't believe me? Just ask my Pug. Seriously though...

I was a little hesitant in picking those names. You are correct in pointing out the theoretical chasm between possibly believing in god or not. However, for me personally, it is rather nit-picky. I guess technically I am a strong agnostic, however, I just call myself an atheist because there is no real practical difference from my own personal point of view, and people know what an atheist is and may not know what a strong agnostic is. Like I said, in my personal life, there is no real difference.

I'm still a Newsbusters fan, and a McCain voting, NRA life-member, Palin-loving, registered Republican, card-carrying member of the Federalist Society Conservative, though.

let's call it what it truly is

It's not "atheism" (There is no God) that these people are pushing. Nor is it "agnosticism" (there may be no God). It's "antitheism" (there must be no God, and if there is, destroy It/Him/Etc)

These so called "athesists" who are so worked up about all this are people who are unwilling and unable to accept consequences, who want to be able to act without repercussions, when the Law doesn't find them, they want to be able to get away with anything. they don't want to know that there's a consequence for their activities whether or not anyone finds out. They want to think it's okay do do whatever you can to get ahead, and stepping on people, being dishonest, whatever, is okay because it's "legally" okay. Sociopaths, essentially.

Note: this is not to cover real agnostics, who are often in search of Truth, nor true atheists, who know that they have but one life to do all their living and won't waste it trying to force others to believe as they do. The sociopaths, the powerhungry, the egotistical, the greedy, the hedonists, and the perpetually guilty-those are the antitheists who are corrupting the atheists and agnostics and attacking those of faith that they cannot abide.

Well now, if Newdow lasts

Well now, if Newdow lasts long enough, he will be able to attempt this again when the next Inauguration comes about...after-all his chances will be greatly increased with the far-leftist SC Judges that will be appointed by O and crew.

I don't know why, but when I

I don't know why, but when I see American Humanist Association, I think of cannibalism. Don't ask me why, but Humanist just sounds like something you would call someone who eats another person, to me. It also makes me think of the Humane society, and we know what happens to leftovers there. I think they need a name change. Plus, this is just stupid. If you don't like the "under God" part, plug your ears, this seems like such a selfish, childish complaint to me. Be an atheist if you want, but be a grown-up one. No one likes everything they hear.

Newdow's a putz who's trying to get back at his ex

this loser started his "campaign" here in CA to cause his ex wife problems, over the Pledge of Allegiance at his daughter's school. He created this big media sh*tstorm to create legal hassles for his ex wife so he could claim she was abusing their daughter and claim custody...to avoid having to pay substantial child support.

Course how he thought this sort of passive-aggressive assault would show him more fit to be a parent than the courts found him to be when they awarded primary custody to his wife, is beyond me.

All this to save a few bucks, to dodge one set of responsibility...to stroke his ego and convince himself he could dodge heavenly responsibilities as well. What an @SSHOLE.

Cancelling religious freedom

I wish they'd figure out that Freedom From Religion means religious freedom for no one.

We need one of those "negative rights" that Obama has spoken of:  No one has the right to keep someone else from offending them.

Welcome to the era of unity, you racist!

  There will always be

There will always be religious types and atheists.  They are composed of two different types of people.  The religious relate to the world emotionally or intuitively while the atheists relate intellectually or sensually.  The religious want to 'spread the joy' or commune with God while the atheists want to rid the world of 'superstition' and let the analytical mind observe and understand the world around us.  The religious can often wear their piety as a mark of their superiority while the atheists often feel superior because of their (perceived) highly developed understanding of the natural world.  I think both are wrong.  They are like a one legged man who thinks he is superior because he has learned to hop on one leg better than anyone he knows.

midamerica

you're making that up

so mid-a you obviously

have identified at least one other type....pray tell, what is it.

mid-a sorry it isn't obvious

you identified "religious types" and "atheists" and made a conclusion that "both are wrong".  so what is right?  what "type" are you.....obviously a third type.  just asking.....sheesh

Ecclesiastes 10:2 The heart of the wise inclines to the right, but the heart of the fool to the left

  Guess I wasn't real

Guess I wasn't real clear.  What I was meaning as wrong from both sides is when a person developes a sense of superiority, that whatever they think is what is right for everyone.  We should all be humble in our beliefs/understandings of the world and be tolerant of others.   .... to a point.  I wouldn't tolerate ritual cannibalism.

shucks mid-a i was hoping

to have a lively "ritual cannibalism" debate with you!! :-)  i had all my links ready and everything!!  i was ready to argue both sides!

on the other subject, thanks for clarifying....now i think i agree with you on something i thought we disagreed on......thanks for fleshing it out

  Well no I didn't really

Well no I didn't really make it up.  I may have garbled it up a bit but I tried to relate to this discussion through my understanding of the writings of Carl Gustav Jung an associate of Freud who later broke away and developed his own study of psychology.

totally different concept

totally different concept perhaps i should have said 'collective unconscious' but more to the point these 'theories' are much less than scientific.  Psycho-analysis has not been shown more effective a treatment than latency.  Well at least not when i got my psychology degree.

----- Radical  Liberal

   I look at psychology

I look at psychology schools of thought the way I do different religions, can they explain to me in a coherant way what I see or experience.  If they can, I use of them to help in understanding my life, at least to my satisfaction.  I know Jung's theories of the 'collective unconscious' are controversial and I have also investigated his studies on symbolism.  The problem with getting too 'educated' is that often the only ideas acceptable are those that are translatable to words.  Words however, can be a block to further understanding of who and what we are.   ....ok, now you've done it.  I'm betraying my 60's upbringing.  However, I never dropped acid.  I come by this natually.

This atheist activism has

This atheist activism has even my liberal brother ticked off. At last, something political we agree on. The atheist activists have turned belief in "nothing" into a quasi-religion and are more zealous in their cause than many Christian missionaries.

The "Mainstream" Media: By liberals. For liberals.

Could be worse

they could be spouting about so-called "atheism" while falling back on worshipping Mother Gaea or The Environment, or Science with a capital S. Changing religions and claiming to have none while worshipping a rock or a tree, or worse, a rock star/actor/politician. Trees and rocks as thinking Creator entities is bad enough. Selfish, self serving egotistical individual humans as Divinity is even worse.

Christians, Muslins, Atheists, and Global warming alarmist

Should all be free to to express their beliefs within the law. This is  America, people came to this country to escape religious prosecution.

What makes me sick is when people of faith and non faith try to force their beliefs on other people and that simply in my book is the opposite of freedom.

The "so  help me God" part should be allowed to stay because our country was built on Christian values, same with Christmas.

He had my vote

shawn...muslins?

i have never found muslin to be my favorite fabric, but have never personally felt persecuted by it.

so which people of faith or "non faith" have "forced" their beliefs on you?  what form did the "forcing" take? ...oral or suppositorial?

My New Years resolution is to be a better speller and check my grammar a little more.:=)

I'm talking about people like the folks in California that are global warming freaks that want to propose a carbon tax on California.

Or People that want to bring back prayer in school. I am all for prayer in school if there was a club for Christians, I mean I don't agree a mandatory  Lords prayer should be done in a classroom.

I also disagree with spots in Texas that don't sell alchohol on Sundays.

laughing too, shawn

dude, lucky it's still this year...you mis-spelled alcohol.  but you really didn't make a good case about people of faith or not forcing their views on you....                                                                        your agw / carbon tax nut argument here in cali is possibly a better argument. i feel like you just said the other stuff because you know that is a left vs right argument that proves some definite lunacy on the left....like you were looking for balance that isn't there.

Well ppb

I thought my example about alcohol was good one. Why tell other people they can't drink alcohol just because it is Sunday?

He had my vote

shawn

i don't think the laws in tx preclude you from drinking on sunday.  i think they forbid the sale on sunday.  if you don't like the law, move there and change it.  there are plenty of blue laws still on the books....all waiting for the local citizens to repeal them. in oregon, the state is in charge of all hard liquor sales and other retail stores sell wine and beer.  the state liquor stores are closed on sunday and there are only 240+ of them. this is from one of the most liberal voting states in the union, where they even let doctors kill old people!

If you don't have any booze in your house,  there is nothing to drink and you must go out to buy it right?

Now I predict you are going to make the argument that you can buy booze on another day except for Sunday or talk about trying the change the law again.

PPB, that is going off topic, you asked me for an example on how faith is forced on me and I told you.

He had my vote

shawn, I'm with you here.

I wouldn't want my child forced to pray by a teacher, especially if its a government school.

Can you just imagine the black market price for double hash browns at 3:00 a.m. if they didn't?

Jer

Well, why don't they sue to

Well, why don't they sue to have the last paragraph of the US constitution declared "Unconstitutional".  The one right before the signatures that says :

"Done in Convention by the Unanimous Consent of the States present the Seventeenth Day of September in the Year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and Eighty seven and of the Independence of the United States of America the Twelfth. In Witness whereof We have hereunto subscribed our Names."

Guess they wouldn't want to draw a lot of attention to that.

Americans are all "guilty as charged"

Let's see:

We can't "offend" the atheists, we can't "offend" the Jews, we can't "offend" the Muslims, we can't "offend" the blacks, we can't "offend" the women, we can't "offend" the men who dress as women , or women who dress as men, we can't "offend" the gays, we can't "offend" the Christians, we can't "offend" bigamists, we can't "offend" doctors, lawyers, or "indian chiefs". We can't "offend" ... YIKES! PC is killing us! Enough already!

NEVER,NEVER trust a "liberal"

I think you're a little off.

In this PC world, you are allowed to offend Christians and white heterosexual men; but the second group goes without saying.
