NBC Keeps Beating on Palin

Even though the votes have all been counted, NBC couldn't resist taking one last shot at GOP vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin on this morning's Today broadcast.

Last week, CMI released a study documenting the media's character assassination of Republican vice-presidential candidate Sarah Palin.  Analysts found that during a two-week period earlier this fall the media pushed three major narratives about Palin: that she was unqualified and unintelligent, that she's tearing apart the conservative movement and that she's little more than McCain's attack dog.  All three networks reinforced the "unintelligent" theme by repeatedly playing clips from Saturday Night Live's skits ridiculing Palin, and embarrassing moments from Palin's interview with CBS anchor Katie Couric.

Reporter Savannah Guthrie virtually recapitulated CMI's study in a single news segment, rehashing all three narratives during her brief report on Palin's future in the Republican party.

First, the assertion that Palin did little more than attack during her campaign events.  Guthrie noted, "The race showed Palin to be an effective campaigner able to deliver an attack with her own brand of bubbly sarcasm."

Guthrie moved on to the topic of "influential conservatives" and their doubts about Palin.  Columnist Kathleen Parker stated during the segment, "You can't feel very confident in the process that led to her selection. And in the possibility, even remote, that she could become president of the United States. She may be ready someday, but she's not ready now."  Guthrie did feature former White House political director Ed Rollins complimenting the governor on her ability to work a crowd, but included no quotes from "influential" conservative talk show hosts like Rush Limbaugh, who called Palin a "breath of fresh air."

Inevitably, Guthrie brought up concerns that Palin is unqualified and unintelligent.  She noted that, "[for Palin to] be a serious contender [in 2012] there's an image problem to shake." Guthrie punctuated this claim with a Saturday Night Live clip of Tina Fey as Palin stating, "I can see Russia from my house," and an embarrassing clip from the Couric interview. Guthrie failed to observe that the repeated airing of SNL clips during news reports may have been responsible for creating Palin's "image problem."

Steven Zeitchik of The Hollywood Reporter appeared during the segment to talk about Hollywood's interest in Palin.  He told NBC, "I think what a lot of producers are saying is you know,  she could really be a very good candidate either for an afternoon syndicated talk show or a nightly cable news show. I think there are a lot of possibilities there."

The complete transcript is below:

MEREDITH VIEIRA, co-host: It is the morning after the election and you know what that means. Some political pros already looking forward to the next presidential election. Could Sarah Palin be the Republican standard-bearer the next time around? NBC's Savannah Guthrie has been covering the Palin campaign.  Savannah, Good morning to you.

SAVANNAH GUTHRIE, reporter:  Good morning, Meredith. Well, Sarah Palin will head back to Alaska today but now that's she's had a taste of presidential politics few think she will stay there for long and may run for president herself in 2012, a prospect that's already dividing some in her own party.

[Clip]

JOHN MCCAIN: I am also, of course, very thankful to Governor Sarah Palin -

[End clip]

GUTHRIE: Thrust into national prominence, seemingly overnight, few think Sarah Palin will disappear as quickly.

[Clip]

MCCAIN:  We can all look forward with great interest to her future service to Alaska, the Republican party and our country.

[End clip]

GUTHRIE: Many Republicans see her as the rising star of the party, popular with the conservative base and middle-America.

[Clip]

SARAH PALIN: Someone called me a redneck woman once and, you know what I said back? I said, why, thank you.

[End clip]

GUTHRIE: The race showed Palin to be an effective campaigner able to deliver an attack with her own brand of bubbly sarcasm.

[Clip]

PALIN:  Thanks for the warning, Joe.

[End clip]

ED ROLLINS, former White House political director: I worked for four different presidents. There are certain people who connect with audiences there. Are certain people who can excite a crowd. She has that ability to do that

GUTHRIE:  But some influential conservatives have openly doubted her after early missteps like this interview with Katie Couric.

[CLIP]

PALIN: Putin rears his head and comes into the airspace of the United States of America, where do they go? It's Alaska, it's just right over the border.

[End Clip]

KATHLEEN PARKER, conservative columnist: You can't feel very confident in the process that led to her selection. And in the possibility, even remote, that she could become president of the United States. She may be ready someday, but she's not ready now.

GUTHRIE: So, how would Palin prepare for a presidential run? Her term as governor lasts two more years, some think she will run for Senate in 2010. Others believe she'll spend the next years pushing a more conservative social agenda to propel her to the GOP presidential nomination. But, to be a serious contender there's an image problem to shake.

TINA FEY as SARAH PALIN:  And I can see Russia from my house!

GUTHRIE: Something she's already started to address, packing three policy speeches into the final days of the campaign.

[Clips]

PALIN: Children with special needs. Matters of national security. Energy independence.

[End clips]

GUTHRIE: But Palin herself has consistently put off questions about 2012.

[Clip]

PALIN: As for furtherance in a political career, I'm not even going to think about that.

[End clip]

GUTHRIE:  If not Washington, there's always Hollywood from the trail to her cameo appearance on "Saturday Night Live"

[Clip]

ALEC BALDWIN:  What do they call her again, Tina?

SARAH PALIN:  That would be Caribou Barbie.

BALDWIN:  Caribou Barbie

[End Clip].

PALIN:  Thank you for that warm welcome.

GUTHRIE: Some in the entertainment industry see star quality.

STEVEN ZEITCHIK, Hollywood Reporter: I think what a lot of producers are saying is you know,  she could really be a very good candidate either for an afternoon syndicated talk show or a nightly cable news show. I think there are a lot of possibilities there.

GUTHRIE: And in her personal life, a big year ahead. Palin will become a grandmother in December when daughter Bristol gives birth and has a summer wedding to plan for Bristol and fiancé Levi Johnston.

Back to politics for a minute. A senior adviser to Palin says don't just think about 2012, there is a possibility of 2016 or beyond. She's a young woman and many think she has a bright political future.

Meredith?

VIEIRA: Savannah Guthrie, thank you very much.

Passive Resistance

NBC is bound and determined to crush any remaining Republican morale.  I still beg all Republican and conservative figures not to appear or participate on NBC or MSNBC. Call it passive resistance. They're just using you to destroy the GOP.

McNotObama '08

They will just lie then,

They want to destroy any possible contenders for BHO in 2012.

Better to face them head on. They aren't that good and the public knows them for the sniveling democratic sycophants they are.

"They will just lie

"They will just lie then"

As opposed to what, now? The GOP figures who do appear now don't "take them on". They're just used by NBC/MSNBC to provide the illusion of balance and fairness. Take that away from them and expose them as to what they really, in function, are - a private Democrat network.

A little off topic, but

Pelosi is already downplaying all of that change that they promised, warning that accomplishments may be diminished by the "downturn in the economy". The back stabbing has already begun.

RESTLESS,

Interesting and not surprising, but yes, your comment sure clipped the thread I was kind of interested in pursuing. Thanks a lot. :)

Oh, sorry,

In that case, I gotta go with Ian then. Too many dumbasses get their information from the MSM. We can't combat that by hiding from it. What we need more than anything in this party right now is more balls. We need some hunger. Unfortunately, most of the repub. leaders are just as fat, dumb, and happy as the liberals. We need new blood, from top to bottom. Then, we can combat the MSM on their fields.

"We need new blood, from top to bottom. Then, we can combat the MSM on their fields."

Everyone keeps talking about all these "new" and "exciting" Republicans. Who? The only ones I see appearing on these NBC shows couldn't defend conservative positions and ideals from an attack by a ten year old.

Bachmann comes to mind,

Palin, with four years to think about it, will be formidable, Jindal, whom I must admit that I need to research more, is young. Michael Steele, Lynn Swann, Thomas Sowell. Some of these people have been on the sidelines a little much, and need to start taking some for the team.

Not saying all should run, but we need people like those above all over t.v. and taking positions in the RNC. A complete overhaul is in the making.

Great choices for me: Love

Great choices for me: Love Bachmann!  Love Steele!

Hopefully NBC will dry up soon, they came in under CBS for election coverage.  MSNBC numbers are very low, and NYT won't last 2 more years.

Maybe one way to combat media is to hit the colleges.  Need a good ground campaign and utilize (& recruit) the YOUTH with technology.  Does anyone know the number of youth who get their news from NBC/CBS/ABC?  My guess is the youth get their news online.

I agree,

We have to become as big on the net as we are in talk radio. We need to clean up the shcools. We need to home school. We need to encourage our kids and teach them the truth. We must hit all venues, and we will need the imagination and tech savvy of the young. We will also need articulate representantives who have done their research to hit the old media, if for no other reason than I see no reason to back down from a fight.

Good evening Chris

You're right. The MSM does not want to give publicity to any conservative. I know he isn't a true conservative, but look how they treated Joe Lieberman. True conservatism will have to be promoted by the alternative media like NBs and others. We'll have an audience when people's take home pay drops and prices go up.

co, Ed Rollins, John

co,

Ed Rollins, John Fund, et al are just useful idiots of the media. More enamored with attention and acceptance than in their own party's interests, they either attack their own candidates or defend them so weakly that nothing would be better.

Why destroy what could help in the long run?

If their object was to crush possible Republican contenders for the 2012 presidential nomination, one would think they would focus on the competent ones. I'm sure that many Democrats would LOVE for the Republican party to continue on its self-destructive path by nominating Palin.

Palin scares the pee out of

Palin scares the pee out of the liberal Democrats. She shatters their long, tired, refrain of "Republicans are only for rich white guys" theme.

Palin hit a chord for me - she at once summed up who a heck of a lot of Republicans are - who are people who are working, trying to get ahead and accumulate a little wealth for themselves. These are the plumbers, the guy who owns a few dry cleaning stores, the construction company owners, and a whole host of ordinary folks who have decided that they own their own fate and have the ability and will to make their lives their own.

To a party that preys upon the notion of, "You can't make it - unless you get some help from us"  and that $250k a year = rich, that's an anathema.

On one of my boards, the libs were going on about how Palin cost McCain the election by driving the conservatives away.

Honestly, Palin was the reason I could vote the McCain ticket this time around. She's what I identify with, conservative, and not just talking the talk, but walking the walk.

Hit the nail on the head!

GOV Palin scares the living bejeezus out of them.  The proof is in the concerted attacks against her even after the election is over.  If they thought that she was a non-contender then she would be ignored.  Keeping her in the spot light will only keep reminding Conservative Americans that she is available for 2012.  Thanks msm and thank you dumb a$$ republicans that leak rumors but won't take ownership.  We will remember her and get her into the Whitehouse in four years.

Yuck

Dinosaurs.......they need taken down yesterday.  We need to all committ "Never again will they do this to us!" GE's stock is now crap.  I hope they go tits up.

Don't blame me....I voted for Palin...

Hideous

I don't know what is more hideous, the media's vicious,  personal attacks on people on the right, like Sarah Palin, or their pompous denial?

They're all a bunch of well-dressed, hellish puppets.

Stuff

The Hollywood Reporter's top story today was how close Franken was.

I read at least two polls projecting Palin at this point to be the #1 contender for 2012.

Also, with the DNC in TOTAL control as of Jan, who will the libs have to blame?

DAILY WAVE

  • GOP: A new start with a new team
  • Who will the libs attack after inauguration?

The real reason...

... that the left hates Sarah Palin is because she is a real conservative and a woman who didn't get where she is by riding her husband's coattails a la Hillary Clinton. She represents the very kind of morality that the left seeks to undermine. She loves rural America, which they frown upon and despise as stupid hicks. She, without actually saying it, called them out on hating this country.

Any woman, black, gay, or Hispanic that diverges from the liberal, communist, anti-American viewpoint must be destroyed.

The patent ignorance and

The patent ignorance and dishonesty presented by the media regarding Sarah Palin will fool nobody who matters in the Republican Party.  The smug Beltway "Republicans", the "Independents" and the RINOs have now had their opportunity to run their candidate in a general election.  It's time to purge the party of all the riff-raff.  If anyone was the soft spot on the Republican ticket, it was McCain...not Palin.  Palin actually breathed some life into McCain's corpse of a campaign...and the media knows it.

"and the media knows

"Palin actually breathed some life into McCain's corpse of a campaign...and the media knows it."

...and for that alone, they must humiliate, crush, and destroy her and any other conservative they see as a threat to the new Obamanation - with any means they can.

I disagree with Sarah

I disagree with Sarah Palin's predicted strong future as being best for the republican party.  Don't get me wrong, I thought she was an excellent VP pick and made me feel a lot more confident about McCain, but at the same time, I don't believe she is the best choice for a presidential pick for 2012.

I am only 20, so for those of you questioning my viewpoint, I am coming from a younger generation that is leaning pretty left right now.  I honestly think the republican party needs a candidate like Bobby Jindal for 2012.  I think he has more potential to be our Obama (but gasp... with real experience).  I think he will excite not only the base like Palin did, but more importantly those who weren't comfortable with Palin from the start because he doesn't fit the republican gun and bible image that Palin gave off to a small extent.  I know this was a reason many people liked her, because they could relate to her in that way.  However, I feel it turned off MANY more people who would have otherwise possibly leaned to the more moderate McCain this election year. I think the GOP needs to focus on its future and the future is converting these uneducated voters who are liberal solely because its cool not to like Bush, to switch over to a party that actually shares their values.  I also think religion is a huge aspect of the GOP that needs to be addressed.  As both a republican and a roman catholic, my faith plays very lightly on my politics, which is incredibly more common with my generation and will continue to be so.  I think the GOP needs to remain strongly pro life, while distancing its image from a religious right, to focus on its economic views and social views.  I know too many democrats who hold fairly moderate-conservative viewpoints, but dont vote GOP because of the 'bible/gun phenomenon'.  Most of them recognize only the religious right, guns and cowboys as the platform of the GOP.

I strongly believe that if this party wants to move in the right direction, it needs to start reevaluating its message to the country.  The GOP spends so much time pandering to the religious who usually throw their support behind them no matter what because of their pro-life stance and social views.  The GOP needs to show the country the multitudes of proof that competitive markets are what leads to economic growth, and when dealing with social issues, dont shy away from social programs, but focus on developing some social programs that 'teach a man to fish so he eats for a lifetime' instead of the typical liberal programs that just take the fish from others to give away. I feel like the issues that will become more and more prominent in coming years will be the economy and social values issues.  A typical conservative image is the cowboy image of the proud countryman who lives free without the hassle of others.  I can relate to this image, but at the same time, this generation was not raised on western movies with strong and independent characters and that image has largely been erased as a positive cultural image for our generation.

Please let me know how you all feel about my position.  All of this is based on my experience in the last year with the election, being a conservative in a liberal environment and being a part of a generation that is very different from the previous.

ksennish

Actually, I agree with you. Governor Palin was the best thing to happen this year and for that, I'm grateful to her. But, I really don't know if she is the strongest hope for our future. I think we'll have to let our emotions cool off and see who develops over the next year or so as a natural leader for the conservatives. I like Bobby Jindahl and everytime I hear him speak, he presents himself as thoughtful, competent, and articulate. Whoever emerges, I just hope the next primary season, the GOP doesn't have so many candidates running that the conservative vote is splintered, allowing the weakest candidate of the bunch to "sneak" through - which I think is what happened this time. At least, I hope with McCain's chance to finally run and lose, the GOP has exhausted the old horses and the next candidate will be fresher.

You know what they

You know what they say...four years is a long time in politics.  In 2004, I never expected that the empty suit delivering the keynote speech at the DNC would be the next President.  And who in 1988 would have thought that the puffy guy who bored the DNC into ironic applause would end up being a two-term President starting four years later?  Four years from now, Palin will still be Palin...but the media won't credibly be able to portray her as some unknown, untested junior executive.  She now has a national profile and a name recognition.  I'm not saying that she will be a Presidential front runner...a lot can change in four years, after all...but I don't think her obituary will be written, either.  The next Republican Presidential nominee may be largely unknown today (and looking at the present field of Republican "contenders", that may be a good thing)...though I'm floating my "Hammer Time" ticket: DeLay/Bolton 2012...or Bolton/DeLay 2012!

McCain/Palin Signs!!!

I posted this earlier, but scoff up any of the signs, put a 2012 over the top name and we should put these out ASAP!

ElRushbo was going on at some length today about her effect on the vote and said it would not even have been as close as it was not! without Sarah on the ticket.

Word is that there were maybe 30million Christians who did not participate, sad to say, at least 3 SCOTUS appointments will be theirs to do as they will.

Let the idiotic, blathering MSM...

say what they will...With every word they utter, they just prove what morons they are. Nothing is ever going to change their opinion of Sarah, win or lose...The hell with them.

Today, my husband and I contacted Gov. Palin's office to inquire as to how to contribute to her gubernatorial re-election campaign. We are going to do everything we can to help her make a return to the national political stage in four years. Go Sarah!

So part of the "evidence" they used to demonstrate Palin's (supposed) "unintelligence" was a video of someone pretending to be her?????

  Pity the poor media.

Pity the poor media.  They have just begun their work.  Now their role is to be the Imperial Guard.  After being His litter bearers to reach the castle, they have to protect him from all criticism, domestic and foreign.  Never must The One touch his feet on cold ground.

They're still afraid of her

As long as Commissar Pelosi and Comrade Franks can stand up there and say the most ridiculous, hateful, condescending things on the news and get away with it, stuff like this will continue.

The very first time it becomes apparent as to their true radical agenda and they mess up with President Bush too far away in time to blame for their screw ups, the Republicans need to jump on them big time.

This being nice attitude that McCain tried to employ (admirable as it was) just doesn't work against those who view terrorists as kindred spirits. The Right needs to chip away at them without stop day in day out like the Communists have been doing to the Bush Administration for eight years. Obviously, that worked. And the Republicans won't even have to lie or exaggerate. Just point out the data.

And they need to start, like right now. Forget this, "Oh, let's give the guy a chance, maybe he'll be a great president." Ayers, Rezko, Wright, ACORN, birth certificate question, drug use, Communist mentors, etc. Put them on the defensive for a change. (are these Republican officials really that naive about politics?).

Think Bobby Jindal is the real future of the GOP? Just wait to see what the MSM has to say about him.

Senate President

Yes, Biden will be the Senate President, but really, how much time do VP's spend actually fulfilling that role?  He can't even vote unless there's a tie to be broken.  And Biden won't be getting face time as a committee chairman in those moronic hearings the Dems love so much.

By leaving the Senate and by saying so many stupid things during the campaign, Biden has likely relegated himself to invisibility.

I was so

I was so depressed/mad/afraid earlier today.  Taking a long walk, I realized that I am still an American, still a Republican.

Then it hit me:  It could be a lot worse...I could be a Democrat...or 'worser', a low-down, dirty, sneaky Liberal-Sell-Out reporter!

In Savannah's Defense

Savannah is one of a few on MSNBC who will  actually bring up and discuss Charles Krauthammer articles on air. Now I dont know what her politics are, but Id give her the benefit of the doubt here - Ive always found her fair.

Fox News: Guilty

Fox News is beating on her too. A Fox reporter on Bill O'Rielly "quoted" an unnamed aide who said she didn't know that Africa was a continent. He didn't bother to ask Palin herself.

The reporter is FoxNews

The reporter is FoxNews reporter Carl Cameron. He reported the same story earlier on Brit Hume's show. Cameron usually is a straight-down-the-middle just the facts type. However, his report about the backstabbing, gossip and internal fighting going on in the McCain campaign regarding Gov. Palin was filled with innuendoes and unnamed sources, as you mentioned.

Cameron reported such gossip as Gov. Palin's supposed temper at times and that she would frequently shop for clothes in addition to what the staff had purchased for her. Another piece of unconfirmed gossip Carl Cameron reported was that John McCain and Sarah Palin were not that friendly to each other.  Cameron seemed to enjoy relaying all this gossip on Gov. Palin. At times during his report I felt I was watching one of the other liberal networks or listening to a National Enquirer reporter. It seemed completely out of character for FoxNews, Carl Cameron and Brit Hume to report such tripe.

Gov. Palin was asked about some of this gossip from reporters as she stepped off the plane in Alaska tonight. She indicated that she and John McCain had an excellent relationship; moreover, she refused to answer any questions when the source was unnamed. Her parting comment to the reporters was that she was disappointed that the media failed to correct erroneous information during the campaign that they had reported about her.

Rush Fan

I noticed that too.  Carl Cameron expressed a little too much glee over his tripe.  He sounded like a gossip columnist.  He's acting like he has some big scoop, which it isn't so he's hyping it.  Who cares about her clothes and her shopping??  Again.. ask McCain what he wears?  While I'm at it, who the hell picked out Michelle's dress for the grand speech.. Christian d'Bordello?

It's America, not Omerica

Wait for it

I saw Carl Cameron's report.  I think he was reporting the CYA lines from McCainiacs, not beating on Sarah Palin.  I can't imagine Fox isn't going to get some kind of comment from Palin or her staffers.  Palin had to fly back to Alaska, which precluded getting a response from her yesterday.

Sarah Palin was not a drag on McCain.  If anything, she increased his vote totals.  Also, by motivating an otherwise reluctant base, she may have had a role in keeping the Dems from getting a veto proof majority in both houses.

When you put the clowns in charge, don't be surprised when a circus breaks out.

Liberals Are Like Cornered Animals

They will attack that which they fear  They fear conservatives and conservatism because they know that once people understand conservative principles, they will agree with them. Why do you think the MSM is so biased in it's reporting? Because they understand and don't want to lose their own power over the people.
