During MSNBC's convention coverage on Monday night, Bill Maher explained to Chris Matthews and Keith Olbermann that American politics "seem to be getting worse because, sorry to say it, people get stupider and stupider every election cycle."
Maher's evidence of Americans' stupidity is found in the fact that "they think off-shore drilling is gonna lower the price of gas and they think Obama, the black guy from the single mother, somehow is the elitist."
Matthews and Olbermann didn't blink at Maher's characterization of Americans but simply provided the perfect set-up for Republican mockery by asking him who the Republicans will run as vice-president and who he wanted to win "for just comedic purposes."
According to Maher, Mitt Romney would be a good pick because "it would be very funny" to see Romney "educate the American people on the lunacy that is Mormonism."
As for who would provide more comedic fodder, Maher went with McCain since "a 200-year old man is always amusing."
Maher then went on to label himself "the loyal American citizen" because he's "for the guy who's getting up here on Thursday night."
The relevant transcript is provided below:
KEITH OLBERMANN: You've studied this well enough, I mean are we at an all-time low politically or does it just seem that way because these are our politics right now and we don't really know how, how evil the campaigns were against William Jennings Bryan and the rest of them?
BILL MAHER: That's a great question and it's certainly is one for historians and I am not a historian. But in my, in my lifetime, I would have to say that things do seem to be getting worse. And they seem to be getting worse because, sorry to say it, people get stupider and stupider every election cycle. I'd love anybody to tell me something that you can't just tell the American people and have them believe it because you didn't add "LOL" to it at the end of your e-mail message. You know they think off-shore drilling is gonna lower the price of gas and they think Obama, the black guy from the single mother, somehow is the elitist. So, you know I think the American people, at the end of the day, have to look in the mirror. They get the leaders they deserve and they don't deserve very good leaders.
MATTHEWS: Who are the Republicans gonna run for Vice President Bill?
MAHER: Well I would love it to be Mitt Romney since I have a movie about religion coming out. And Mitt Romney, of course, will have to educate the American people on the lunacy that is Mormonism. And I think that would be very funny. I also think it's funny that the Republicans were for Rudy Giuliani but we showed five different pictures of him dressed up as woman at one point. And then the Republican base went, "Well let's go to Mitt Romney." Then they found out about Mormonism and they went, "Let's go to Fred Thompson." And then they wound up back with McCain.
MATTHEWS: Well let me defend Mormonism. It's a good religion. Let's move on from that. Shall we demure on that subject?
...
MATTHEWS: Okay, well Bill Maher who's the biggest, who's, who do you want to win this election for just comedic purposes? Just for nightclub, red brick, purposes?
MAHER: Well there's no doubt that McCain would be better for nightclub purposes. I mean a 200-year-old man is always amusing. But I'm the loyal American citizen, Chris. I want to see the best man win. The smartest guy. So I'm for the guy who's getting up here on Thursday night.

And how does Maher deal with this? By offering strawmen arguments, half-baked analysis, tortured analogies, and attempts at "humor".
What is with these washed-up, has-been standup comics and their liberal rants? Bitter, much?

August 26, 2008 - 12:33 ET by kdizzydazeabout people getting stupider and stupider every election cycle. I mean, look how close these elections have gotten from the days of Reagan as more and more stupid people vote for the liberal blowhard.
And on the economics front, what idiot thinks that by increasing the supply of a product while demand for that product remains the same would force the price down?!?!?!?!? Morons
yup - I love my mid afternoon sarcasm
Yeah, I'm one of those
August 26, 2008 - 12:36 ET by Ruths husband BenYeah, I'm one of those idiots who think increasing supply will somehow affect prices....I also fail to understand how increasing taxes on fuel (re Obamessiah's proposed windfall profit tax on oil companies) will lower prices.
simple.
August 26, 2008 - 17:13 ET by mbuelYou have to first insert your head into the marxist vice, and then twist until all the common sense oozes out of your ears.
After doing that you'll see it makes as much sense as FDR's slash and burn policies to help farmers. (which all it did was decrease supply, and increase prices making it harder for _everyone_).
Marxist ideas fail whenever they are applied and yet you have bubble headed big thinkers like Maher who think that anyyone who opposes those ideas is getting dumber?
Personally...
August 26, 2008 - 12:37 ET by ElyasI prefer Dennis Miller to this pretender. He tries to act like an "intelligent" political comedian but I don't find his coments very clever.
Thomas Jefferson once said, 'We should never judge a president by his age, only by his works.' And ever since he told me that, I stopped worrying.

So let's get this straight,
August 26, 2008 - 12:45 ET by dscottSo let's get this straight, you think the American people are stupid? You don't think increasing supply over demand will lower the price of an item? You are intolerant of people with religious views different from your own? You are condescending and biased against people older than 65? You make fun of people by cross dressing them?
Wow, I had no idea that liberals were so stuck on themselves, juvenile in their thinking and looked down their noses at everyone else not of their group. If a so called journalist can say this on TV as if it were a truism it certainly does speak to the total lack of character of liberals in general and Obama supporting Democrats specifically.
Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid, starving the poor one gallon of ethanol at a time. Fill your tank with E85 and cull a village.
yep
August 26, 2008 - 17:14 ET by mbuelAnd this is why they'll lose presidential elections until they reverse course. ON a -national- level people, even democrats, want a conservative patriot running the country. NOT these progressive elitist maroons.

In fact, we're so much more
August 26, 2008 - 12:51 ET by mattmIn fact, we're so much more stupider now than we used to was, we have actually accepted 'stupider' as an actual word, and actually get our news and analysis from unfunny comedians who are more stupider than us.
Dude is right
August 26, 2008 - 12:52 ET by Adam_METhe public is getting stupider. Look how many people support Obama, yet they admit they know nothing about the guy and can't list a single accomplishment of his professional or political career.
The biggest concerns in this election are the economy, energy prices, and Iraq. And Obama openly admits to wanting to raise taxes when we're bordering on a recession, has no real plan to increase domestic energy production(instead he'll level a windfall profits tax on oil companies), and insisted the surge was destined to fail and won't admit after the fact that it was a success.
Yet here he is potentially our next President. Yes, I'd say Bill Maher is on to something. Only he's directing his vitriol at the wrong voting bloc.

Maher Is A Marxist
August 26, 2008 - 13:09 ET by rammingspeedI'm tired of tip-toeing around these pinkos, like Bill Maher and his ilk. Read Das Kapital (or re-read, for the scholars) and compare its thesis and its utter failure when put in practice (USSR, anyone?) You'll be shocked and amused at how much of the current democrat party talking points and their goals for America are taken from Uncle Karl. To Maher, Americans being stupid means they are less and less seduced by the doublespeak of libs and dems trying to present themselves as people cut from American cloth, and yet trying to impose the slavery of collectivism and redistributionism on this country.
People are getting smarter, Bill! They're able to figure out and reject you and your lowlife buds on the left.

August 26, 2008 - 13:12 ET by c5thenSo...increasing the supply of a commodity on the world market will not lower the cost of that commodity. That must be an advanced economics course that I never took.
So a Black guy from a 'single' mother who graduates from a Chicago high school and gets to go to Harvard can not be an 'elitist'. Why, because he is black, because he had no father or because he went to Harvard?
P.S. the 200 year old man has already been done by Mel Brooks. I doubt that you can even approach that level of quality and humor in your work.
P.P.S. Mel was Jewish. Does that make it better or worse for you?
The day that "politician" became a career choice is the day we started losing the Republic. Let's get it back! Alan Keyes '08.
Maher is, of course,
August 26, 2008 - 13:13 ET by marvlMaher is, of course, correct. The fact that three morons such as he, Olbermann, and Matthews are allowed anywhere within 100 feet of a TV camera proves it. And the fact that we have a candidate with no experience, no knowledge, and no accomplishment also proves it.
On an unrelated note, I have always held that, if we could somehow manage to clone Bill Maher's nose and mass produce it, then all that sucking wind would make wind power a viable reality.

Responding to Maher
August 26, 2008 - 13:22 ET by nkviking75Maher's evidence of Americans' stupidity is found in the fact that "they think off-shore drilling is gonna lower the price of gas and they think Obama, the black guy from the single mother, somehow is the elitist."
So Bill, have we repealed the law of supply and demand? Because if we produce more oil, all things being equal, the price should go down.
As for the "elitist" business, do you have to be born elitist to qualify as an elitist? Obviously not, since Obama is about as snobbish as they come.
And on the "stupid" comment, don't knock it. It keeps you, MSNBC, and the Democrats in business.
When you put the clowns in charge, don't be surprised when a circus breaks out.
Bill Maher is the stupid one
August 26, 2008 - 13:24 ET by kevinm13He is right on one thing. That there are stupid people out there who continue to give him employment and an audience. I hope he appreciates that wouldn't happen in any other country.

The journalists are getting worse
August 26, 2008 - 18:02 ET by Carl KolchakThe journalists nowadays probably wish they could put out the fine reporting from such "elite" publications as "Pravda" and "Neues Deutschland", but they can't so they just sit around and pout and try to act like they are smarter than everyone else. That's why the stuck up journalists wish they could cover stories as good as from Art Bell's Coast to Coast AM, but they can't, because in my opinion they are too stuck up and not smart enough to know as much as those who called in on that show.
