Are Americans dumber than we used to be? Susan Jacoby thinks so, and continually uses conservatives as her illustrations.
The "dumbing down" of American culture, as evidenced by America’s obsession with reality television and the barrage of celebrity "news" coverage, is a worthy topic of discussion. But it’s hard to have a reasoned discussion with an author who is contributing to the problem by gratuitously bashing conservatives and religious believers.
NBC’s Matt Lauer sat down with Jacoby to discuss her book, The Age of American Unreason, during the February 19 broadcast of the Today Show, and asked her about the role the media play in "dumbing down" Americans. Jacoby responded:
Dumbness is us. Yes I think the media has a lot to do with it. It’s not an original observation. This is the first time we've been able to have 24/7 entertainment coming into our ears if we want it. But just as politicians will say to voters, you were lied to, rather than -- the more fundamental question is why did we let ourselves be so stupid that we're so easy targets for lies?
And who is lying to us? Jacoby tips her hand with numerous jabs at conservatives and a few at religion.
In a February 17 Washington Post article, Jacoby contrasted President Bush to Franklin Roosevelt, saying "People accustomed to hearing their president explain complicated policy choices by snapping "I'm the decider" may find it almost impossible to imagine the pains that Franklin D. Roosevelt took, in the grim months after Pearl Harbor, to explain why U.S. armed forces were suffering one defeat after another in the Pacific."
When questioned about "media elites" mocking intellectuals during a February 19 Washington Post online chat, Jacoby said, "of course, there’s nothing wrong with making fun of stupid intellectuals, and there are plenty of them. But what’s wrong with them (say, the right-wing intellectuals who brought us the Iraq war) is not that they’re intellectuals, but that their [sic] blinded by ideology to evidence."
Jacoby also stated during the chat that "People who are so convinced of the rightness of a position that they simply ignore countervailing evidence can be found among Harvard business graduates (George W. Bush) and among fourth-graders. The fourth-graders have an excuse."
Jacoby’s bias isn’t solely political. A New York Times article stated that she "blames religious fundamentalism’s antipathy toward science, as she grieves over surveys that show that nearly two thirds of Americans want creationism to be taught along with evolution." She confirmed this in the Post chat by saying "religious fundamentalism – belief in the literal truth of every word in the Bible – is part of [the] anti-rationalist contempt for science and evidence."
Sparking conversation about how to increase the level of discourse is an admirable endeavor. But if the conversation is as crucial as Jacoby makes it out to be, why sink to the level of mudslinging? Why not just let the book speak for itself?

LOL-ludicrous
February 21, 2008 - 19:21 ET by needleSusan Jacoby, Matt Lauer , and NBC itself are being ludicrous here, but the fact that this posting comes less than one hour after the “Reuters Wonders If Chavez Can Measure Up to Castro's 'Heroic Status'” posting makes this LOL-ludicrous.

February 21, 2008 - 20:19 ET by iveseenitallI find it laughable and ironic that this woman's "liberal" ideolgy so blinds her from considering anthing but her own point of view. But this "liberalism " in a nutshell --"s'accuse, m'accuse". LOL
P.S. The educational system in America is overwhelmingly "liberal". The educational system in America has been "dumbed down". Ergo, the educational system has been dumbed down by the "liberals". Quite logical.
NEVER, NEVER trust a "liberal"

It also reminds me of this really bad movie I just saw called "Two Days in Paris'. There was this one scene where a group of American tourists are going on the Da vinci Code tour. At least one of them is waring a Bush t-shirt. The main character gives them bum directions (that put them in a bad neighborhood) to the Louvre. He does this so that he can get their space in a cab line. He later tells his finance that they deserved it because they are what is wrong with America (He's American and his finance is French).
First, I doubt that people who go on vacation pack Bush t-shirts but even if they did, everyone who I know who read and liked the Da vinci Code is a liberal. I tried to read it because I love religious contemplation stuff and I though it was so poorly written that I couldn't get through it.
Even the highest brow liberals will read or give good reviews to something that trashes Christians. Even when they are supposed Christians. It's a severe sickness they have.
The fact that they have to
February 21, 2008 - 19:34 ET by liberal_bug_zapperThe fact that they have to start attacking our intelligence, and ignore the fact that our ideas always defeat their ideas is evidence that they will lose if we can shut up their slander.
There needs to be a way of shutting down the slander machine that is the left-wing media and political pundits, and forcing them into debates about ideas.
Leftists always attack the person to steer the spotlight away from their ideas, because as soon as any reasonable minded person looks at them, they'd realize that the socialist/liberal agenda is to enslave us all with them in control. Every policy they tout is a covert enslavement agenda.... Government Healthcare takes away all of our choices.... eventually, it's the pot of water and frog scenario.... yet many choose to turn a blind eye. Social Security is another great example of people becoming slaves.... because this ponzi scheme cannot hope to succeed, they'll be looking for a way to take more and more of what we individuals earn and give it to others.... as they always believe they know best what is fair.
As the enslavement of America progresses forward, we will eventually reach a point where the only available action will be to take revolutionary action. Do we really want to have another bloody civil war??? Well, if enough people don't wake up to what is going on, and soon, many of the programs and government controls will be to big and too strong to stop. They'll be monitoring any attempt at people trying to organize action against them and they'll attack, with full force... and in a way that will make Waco seem like a simple firefight. Not tens of people will perish, but hundreds, maybe even thousands... and when that happens, so will die our freedom.
We're almost there now, and it scares me. It scares me because so many people don't believe it or want to believe that it's just fear mongering or the like. The big Government Dems and Repubs are working together to enslave the population, and soon, we will not have the ability to take back our country the way the second amendment meant for us to do.
As soon as we lose the battle to deport the 20 million democrat voters (read: illegal’s), we will lose our country. I fear that may be closer than most people think.
They attack our intelligence now, so that later, they can cite their stories point them at us as the dumb Americans rise up only to be put down by the wonderful socialists. Remember, in order to kill, most people have to dehumanize their enemy first. This is what they've been doing to us for quite some time. Read their bumper stickers, many are about killing conservatives, or wishing death on Republicans, or the President. I saw one the other day that read: "Let's hope Cheney takes Bush duck hunting" with a caricature of a dead Bush. These people are sick and they're working to dehumanize us so that when it comes time for their leaders to ask them to attack us, they'll have no problems like the Germans had no problems attacking Jews after years of dehumanization by the National Socialists.

February 21, 2008 - 20:00 ET by iveseenitallIt is sad that the bumper sticker you described even exists. However, let it be evidence for you as to how twisted and irrational "liberal" hatred is. Young people, in particular, learn this kind of stuff from peole like Keith Olbermann in the media, and sadly, from teachers in the schools. You are right to fear future ignorance. Education in America has been on a downhill slide for decades and it doesn't look that it will turn around anytime soon. But keep fighting; don't give up.

February 21, 2008 - 20:12 ET by iveseenitallThere is no better evidence of the "dumbing down" of American education than the McCain story in the NYT. The essay gets a C- at best. Better still, it should be returned for ten re-writes.Poor research, poor sources, unsubstantiated innuendo-no proof of allegations. Rather than using the story to draw a conclusion, the conclusion is drawn ahead of time. Deductive reasoning at its worst. This is what is coming out of our schools of "journalism". The writers for the "paper of record" in America need to go back to Composition 101. Sad.

Can you do another one called Beagle Bomba for President? Talk about the cute floppy ears and how you just want to hug him. His speeches would be "Baroooooooo! Barooooooo! I love You!" You know how Beagles howl but it's so cute that even when it's loud it doesn't scare anyone? Then show how he would deal with an Islamic extremist Rottweiler. Baroooooo! Baroooooo! Then after he's mauled by the Rottweiler the Rottweiler takes over his candidacy and the Beagle is wearing a full beard and head scarf and his beagle wife wears a burka.

What is she talking about here? If American forces suffered any of the defeats similar to what was happening during the early fighting in the South Pacific, or in N. Africa, today's MSM and so called elites like Jacoby would be screaming about how bad Bush is. I doubt she really knows much about WW2, she is just throwing out Roosevelt comparisons like she thinks she does. How about the Hurtgen Forest during WW2? This was one of worst defeats the US Army has ever suffered, and the Allies still ended up being victorious at the end of WW2. If the US Army suffered a defeat like that today, the MSM and so called elites would demand all troops pull out. How about the Battle of Bulge? Good thing Cronkite wasn't reporting on that one. He'd probably declare the Germans the victors, even though the Allies responded quickly after early German successes.
In WWII, the MSM wasn't over-run...
February 22, 2008 - 05:24 ET by Parker1227...with irrational cultural relativists and Leftist ideologues like Ms. Jacoby. Some irrational refrains often heard from the Left (on Iraq) these days include, "Who are we to tell people what kind of governments they should have?" And, "We can't force our culture on other people."
This "reasoning" is based on false assumptions. The first assumes that most Iraqis were happy living in Saddam's terror police state.
The second assumes that relieving Iraq and the world of a genocidal monster in Saddam, and giving the power back to the Iraqi people - equals forcing American culture on Iraq.
Is freedom really just some kind of crazy American cultural invention - or is it universally valued (to be able to choose one's own life and beliefs without being imprisoned or murdered)?
Cultural relativists really can't make up their minds. They think all of the people in the world oppressed by Leftist totalitarians and Islamist totalitarians have the right to choose to be oppressed - but any Americans who really do exercise their freedom to be something other than PC Leftists are fools that need to be re-educated.

But I have faith that he will not prevail. His party will be destroyed and it will happen much sooner than we think.
