Mark Thompson Update: Fresh Questions on When NYT CEO Found Out About BBC Child Sex Scandal

Patrick Goodenough of CNSNews reported Monday morning on new developments in the Mark Thompson controversy, concerning what the New York Times Co.'s new chief exeuctive knew about accusations against BBC star entertainer Jimmy Savile, when Thompson was head of the BBC: "Emails Raise New Questions About When NY Times CEO Learned of BBC Child Sex Scandal."

New information published in a British newspaper Sunday raised fresh questions about New York Times Company CEO Mark Thompson’s assertions that he knew nothing about a child sex scandal before his tenure as director-general of the BBC ended in September.

The London Sunday Times reported that internal BBC emails released under the U.K.’s Freedom of Information Act indicate that Thompson was contacted personally about the Jimmy Savile affair last February.

One of the emails, sent by [Thompson’s communications director Paul] Mylrea and containing the journalist’s query, is copied to Mark Thompson’s email address.

In other news, the New York Observer noted Thompson has delayed scheduled meetings with Times staff to discuss the matter:

....Mr. Thompson planned to address the questions in town hall meetings on December 17th and 18th.

But Mr. Thompson is pushing the meetings back to 2013, he announced today in a memo that went out to Times staffers.“I wanted to address questions about it at the Town Halls once the enquiry was out and all the facts were known,” Mr. Thompson wrote. “It now turns out that Nick Pollard will not submit his report at the end of November as originally planned but some weeks later. As a result, I believe it makes sense to move the Town Halls to early in the new year.”
