GOP 'Hijacked the News Cycle' to Exploit Obama's 'Six Words' on Private Sector 'Doing Fine,' Says NYT's Calmes

By Clay Waters | June 11, 2012 | 19:39

A  A

Late in the 2008 campaign, Republican presidential candidate John McCain was whacked in a front-page story in the New York Times for saying the "fundamentals of our economy are strong." But after President Obama said on Friday that "the private sector is doing fine" (he walked the statement back hours later) Times reporter Jackie Calmes conjured up some spin on Obama's behalf.

The slant was evident even in the headline, "Six Words From Obama, and a Barrage in Return From Republicans," which carried the strong presumption that the GOP was unfairly jumping on a minor gaffe.

With good reason, presidents have long been said to hold the power of the bully pulpit. But when President Obama sought to wield it on Friday, by calling a White House news conference to showcase his concern for the economy and Republicans’ refusal to work with him, he was the one who ended up getting pummeled.

By late afternoon, Mr. Obama was forced to clarify one line from his morning session with reporters -- “the private sector is doing fine” -- after Congressional Republicans and his presidential rival, Mitt Romney, had seized on the comment to criticize Mr. Obama as out-of-touch and detached from the millions of Americans who cannot find jobs or have given up looking.

“Listen, it is absolutely clear that the economy is not doing fine. That’s the reason I had the press conference,” Mr. Obama said in clarifying his earlier remark when asked about Mr. Romney’s criticism during an Oval Office appearance with the president of the Philippines, Benigno S. Aquino III.

....

But for the day at least, the damage was done, as Republicans hijacked the news cycle with their barrage against Mr. Obama’s six words in a professorial 29-minute exchange. While the metaphor of the bully pulpit originated with President Theodore Roosevelt about a century ago and generally remains apt, it does not allow for a 21st-century media environment of constant cable television chatter, blogging and instant Internet videos that empower a president’s opponents to bully back.

Calmes felt the need to explain what Obama really meant.

Mr. Obama’s point at his news conference was that for more than two years, monthly jobs reports have shown growth in the private sector, but continuing cutbacks in the public sector as state and local governments slash jobs in their struggle to balance their budgets; the public sector -- not the private sector -- most needs additional government help.

Story Continues Below Ad ↓

Calmes actually provided "context" to bolster Obama's argument for him.

Mr. Obama’s comment, in context, was: “We’ve created 4.3 million jobs over the last 27 months, over 800,000 just this year alone. The private sector is doing fine. Where we’re seeing weaknesses in our economy have to do with state and local government -- oftentimes, cuts initiated by governors or mayors who are not getting the kind of help that they have in the past from the federal government and who don’t have the same kind of flexibility as the federal government in dealing with fewer revenues coming in.”

Republicans hope they can turn Mr. Obama’s “doing fine” line into the sort of bumper-sticker comment that would damage him with swing voters much like his 2008 rival, Senator John McCain, was hurt when he said “the fundamentals of the economy are strong.” Mr. McCain, however, spoke in September 2008 as the financial system was already imploding, and his comment underscored his well-known and self-acknowledged unfamiliarity with economic policy.

....

Mr. Obama’s news conference also provoked Republicans to revive their charge that he is blaming Europe’s ills for slow growth here to distract from his own culpability.

“He used his old standby excuse -- headwinds -- for his failure on the economy,” said Kirsten Kukowski, press secretary for the Republican National Committee.

Yet many economists say that Europe is a big factor in the American outlook. AllianceBernstein, an asset management firm in Manhattan, wrote to clients and reporters on Friday that it had slightly lowered its forecast for economic growth this year “amid increasing international headwinds facing the U.S. economy.” And Bank of America Merrill Lynch said “the uncertainty shock from Europe is building rapidly, undercutting both U.S. and global growth.”

Ah, the mating call of the failed liberal left: 'I was taken out of context!'

It's amazing how America's enemies have picked up on it too. They know that to fool the liberals and hide their terrorist acts, all they have to do is shrug and say they were 'taken out of context'.

I'm-In-A-Jihad of Iran will probably be saying that while he's in the very act of launching a nuke at Israel to 'wipe them off the map'.

If a Liberal/Democrat politician/media figure wants to put their arms around you, or pat you on the back, all they're doing is looking for a good place to stick a knife.

Big lie, of course. The GOP didn't "hijack" anything...I wish they would.

The private sector is getting hammered by the Punk in Chief, which is how leftist totalitarians like it - which is why, as long as it has a faint pulse, to them it's doing fine.

The majority of the dead tree and alphabets did not cover or minimized Obama's gaffe because the operatives wanted to limit the damage. Face it, Clammy honey, you MSM types were scooped and you sat on your behinds trying to cover for Ear Leader while conservatives picked up the ball and ran with it. Now you are crying and whining about context where you would not have given the same consideration to a conservative. Really bites to be mainstream media and an Obama stooge, right Clammy?

They REALLY can't stand when we throw their own tactics back into their teeth, can they? Romney is raising more money than Obambi, and now that's a bad thing. Disregard how much Obambi raised for his 2008 campaign, and how much he was expecting to raise for this one (until he and his administration developed a serious case of foot-in-mouth disease). Romney is using Obambi's own words against him, which was fine for ANY democrat to do against a republican. Republicans are widely broadcasting Obambi's gaffs and highlighting his lies, broken promises, and mistakes. Okay for dems, but not so much for republicans. Romnay is actually challenging Obambi on issues. McCain didn't - how DARE Romney do so.

Sorry to break the news liberal elitist intellectuals - Obambi has a fight on his hands this time (unlike '08). The conservative base is getting charged up, the money is flowing to our candidates, the LSM is discredited, AND OBAMBI ACTUALLY HAS A RECORD he now has to defend. No cake-walk this time people...

Just gotta LOVE watching the implosion...

"(he walked the statement back hours later)"

He just said the same thing another way, he said the "economy" was not doing ok which is why he had the press conference. That is no difference than what he said earlier, he believes that because there are not enough government employes, THAT is what is keeping the "economy" down. He BELIEVES that the private sector is fine.

(Wrapped around the) Axel-rod made essentially the same statement at a press conference recently. He basically said, referring to the private sector, that we need more teachers, cops, and firemen. When a reporter corrected him that these were all public sector jobs, Axelhoof repeated his earlier statement. Obambi and his cronies truly believe public sector jobs will fix the economy. It also show two other things: They have no clue about the economy, and they don't give a $hit about the private sector. Freudian slip? I do believe so...

"The economy" vs. "the private sector"

Submitted by needle on Mon, 06/11/2012 - 10:13pm.

“Listen, it is absolutely clear that the economy is not doing fine. That’s the reason I had the press conference,” Mr. Obama said in clarifying his earlier remark [that “the private sector is doing fine.”]

Obama is the greatest apologizer ever to occupy the White House, but he simply cannot take responsibility for what he says or does.

We have a President whose actions have failed During His Own Presidency. (which is very unusual. Policy issues don't usually resolve themselves as success or failure during a sitting President's tenure.)

Stimulus,
Healthcare costs rising and I am not going to be able to keep my own doctor,
Didn't close Gitmo
Didn't create jobs (the numbers are not what he says they are and we have less people working now than when he came in office)
Fast and Furious

And he gets no blame in the press for that......

But something that he lobbied against (any enhanced interrogation techniques) that lead to the where abouts of Osama Bin Ladin....... HE TAKES CREDIT FOR.

CAN I MAKE ONE MORE POINT.........

To know if the private sector is doing fine or not. Obama is the POTUS,therefore the private sector is not doing fine. Communism and class warfare coupled with over regulation and uncertainty as to what the Hawaiian, Kenyan, Indonesian, Islamic, Black theologian will unleash next is why our country is in the horrible shape it's in. Im literally filled with dread when I think of what new disasters this communist and his ilk will implement if he gets 4 more years. There won't be a private sector. Mmm mmm mmm.

Geez, so he says what he means, and it shows his true colors vis-a-vis his preference for public over private, and he has the msm covering for him?

That tells me the msm gets it - that once the surface voters grok, it's all over.

I think I posted my convo 3 1/2 years ago with fed. workers at the VA. It was when they got the pay freeze letter and the one woman was all "Oh hell no, I DESERVE a raise".

I said yeah, the stimulus was designed to prop up the States/Fed. workers so they wouldn't get sucked down like those in the private sector had been & they would {hopefully} keep the economy up. I said that my husband {thankfully!} had kept his job, because his business did what was needed, so he he lost pay and hours.

The stimulus kept the public sector from feeling the recession, and when the economy bounced back, all would be well. At least, that was the plan.

Now all we hear is how the stimulus wasn't big enough, and the pit was too deep, and boooooooooooosh, and how Romney would take us back to boooooooooosh.

Here we are, after HUGE increases in fed gov't worker rolls, and it did NOT work.

Definition of insanity anyone?

The government's view of the economy could be summed up in a few short phrases: If it moves, tax it. If it keeps moving, regulate it. And if it stops moving, subsidize it.

So, Republicans held a gun to the head of every single newscaster, talk show host, and newspaper columnist in the country and forced them to talk about this? WOW! I didn't know they were so powerful!

Come on, dude! Obama shot himself in the foot, and did so on national television. Don't try to claim that it was the GOP who pulled the trigger.

Sorry but SHE is NO reporter! A reporter REPORTS the news and that's IT. SHE is reporting what was said and then expanding on it to make a political point.

No WONDER the NYT is sinking like a rock. Pretty soon they will probably be bought out...hopefully to someone who knows HOW to run a paper.
