New York Times Reporter Again Advocates for Illegals Cowering in the 'Shadows'
Other than "climate change," no issue brings out the New York Times's liberal bias more than illegal immigration. Thursday Times reporter Fernanda Santos piled on the pro-illegal immigrant tropes in her story from Phoenix, "In Arizona, Immigrants Make Plans In Shadows." Santos claims an Arizona law "seeks to push illegal immigrants out of the state by making it hard for them to go about their lives and earn a living." The paper has used that sympathetic description in several purportedly objective news stories about illegal immigrants.
Another beloved Times cliche: "shadows." The Times loves to call up the image of illegal immigrants cowering "in the shadows" -- the phrase has cropped up in several news stories, though it doesn't seem to jive with the massive pro-amnesty street demonstrations put on my immigrant supporters (and the photos of illegals that constantly grace the paper, like the one below).
The rest of Santos's story is similarly by the numbers.
Miguel Guerra has a wife, three children and a house. He has a car, but no driver’s license. He has business cards, but no immigration papers. He got into the habit of keeping his cellphone close when he drives so he can quickly call a cousin, the only legal resident among his relatives in the United States, in case he gets pulled over.
If he does not call again within an hour, he said, the cousin knows to look for him at the county jail.
Mr. Guerra, 36, moved here 13 years ago, before Arizona made illegal immigrants a target, turning once mundane tasks like driving to the grocery into a roll of the dice. Protesting the state’s strict immigration laws “hasn’t changed anything,” he said, so one recent evening he took a more pragmatic approach. He filled out an affidavit designating his cousin to care for his children, his money, his house and everything else he owns should he be arrested.
The Supreme Court is set to hear arguments next week challenging the most controversial sections of an Arizona immigration law, known as SB 1070, which seeks to push illegal immigrants out of the state by making it hard for them to go about their lives and earn a living. Lower courts have prevented many of the most controversial provisions from taking effect, but that has not stopped a chill from seeping into the bones of the state’s immigrants.
“Preparing for the worst is our best defense these days,” Mr. Guerra said.
Here and elsewhere in Maricopa County, where one in three residents is Hispanic, illegal immigrants -- interviewed at car washes, outside dollar stores, in schools and at the offices of a grass-roots organization called Puente, where Mr. Guerra and others worked on their affidavits -- seemed almost indifferent to how the Supreme Court will rule on the constitutionality of the law. Having lived through years of relentless enforcement of the state’s anti-illegal-immigration measures by the hard-line sheriff, Joe Arpaio, they feel little can make life harder than it already is.

The are ILLEGAL. That means that they are not supposed to even be here.
How about we replace "Illegal Immigrant" with "Identity theif" or "scam artist" or "tax evader" or any other type of under the radar criminal occupation? No one would bat an eyelash if their life was being made more difficult and they had to opperate in the "shadows".
And lets try and turn our elected law enforcement leaders into rhetorical bad-guys by talking about the "relentless enforcement" of the law that was awarded a restraining order. So really...how much enforcement could there be and how relentless is it?
And now...the ultimate oppression...Illegals are going to have a harder time voting in Arizona because they just upheld their voter ID law.
So these poor illegals (who aren't supposed to be here anyway) are not going to be able to vote illegally for the democrats who will allow them to stay in the country and give them welfare and food stamps and free college educations for their children.
And for people who say they are not really criminals...Just because they broke the law and got into this country illegally...Lets take Mr. Gurrera as an example...He drives a car with no license (does he even know the traffic laws?) and does he have insurance on that car? Probably not because he doesn't have a license to give the insurance company.
So, to recap...
1) in the country illegally
2) drives without a license
3) opperates a car without insurance
4) probably doesn't pay taxes
...Just a regular law-abiding guy...

"Other than "climate change," no issue brings out the New York Times's liberal bias more than illegal immigration..."
That's because our rich and snobbish liberal citizens at the NYTimes and elsewhere that oversubscribe to it need illegal immigrants to exploit as nannies, maids and gardeners. If they loose this battle, they may have to pay market wages and SSN and other taxes for their now unreported employees.

Stop calling these people immigrants. They are NOT immigrants! They are ALIENS.
IMMIGRANT: An "immigrant" is a person who migrates to another country, usually for permanent residence. Under this definition, therefore, an "immigrant" is an alien admitted to the U.S. as a lawful permanent resident. The emphasis in this definition is upon the presumptions that (1) the immigrant followed U.S. laws and procedures in establishing residence in our country; (2) he or she wishes to reside here permanently; and (3) he or she swears allegiance to our country or at least solemnly affirms that he/she will observe and respect our laws and our Constitution.
ILLEGAL ALIEN: An "illegal alien" is a foreigner who (1) does not owe allegiance to our country; and (2) who has violated our laws and customs in establishing residence in our country. He or she is therefore a criminal under applicable U.S. laws.
See the difference? As long as we use terms as defined by the liberals, they will continue to dominate the issue. Even good ole' Harry Reid once went so far as to call them "Undocumented CITIZENS"! The libs consider them citizens as soon as they cross our border. They just aren't usually as blatant about it. As long as we persist in allowing them to call these poeple "immigrants", and even continuously use the term ourselves, we will never win this fight. I have absolutely no problem with immigration. It brings new blood to America and allows people to make a better life for themselves. But first and foremost, they MUST adhere to our laws. The first of which is to IMMIGRATE, not INVADE.
All these tired old stories about how illegals work, own businesses, pay taxes, and so on just shows me that they're continuously breaking our laws. You can't pay taxes without a social security number, and illegals DON'T HAVE ONE! Which means they've STOLEN someone else's, which is also defined as IDENTITY THEFT. If someone breaks a law and isn't punished for it, why not break more? Why not obey only the laws they agree with? They've already repeatedly deomonstrate their willingness to break laws. They need to go, and let LEGAL IMMIGRANTS go through the process and become Americans.

This needs to be taught in our schools. Of course no one would want to teach it since we do live in Atzlan. I wonder how the Comanches and Apaches feel about that?

No other country in the world has open borders or even advocates for them - this is totally unique to America. And no other country has more liberal abortion laws. Go figure that one.

Yeah, how dare we heartless conservatives not bend over backwards to accommodate people who entered our country illegally, take jobs from legal citizens, suck on the government teat, refuse to integrate, raise the crime rate, funnel ludicrous quantities of money out of the country, and get away with it because the only race you're allowed to bad-mouth are whites.
I mean, what's wrong with us?

Shadows? I call BS. I cordially invite Fernanda Santos to come down to my part of Texas. The illegals aren't hiding in the "shadows". No. I see them every Saturday and Sunday night at Wal-Mart.
Venga, Fernanda. Sé seria y no seas aguafiestas.

You can see 18 or 20 of them get out of their pickup at the Wal-Mart or Meijer's any weekend night, and wander inside to shop.

Yeah, we are not exactly border-adjacent and yet we see the outcome of this.
Construction jobs used to be a thing where unskilled, undereducated persons could begin a career that could provide a pretty decent standard of living.
Begin as a brick layer, basic laborer or cement placer and end up as a skilled brick mason or the like. Your community benefitted, you benefitted and you had a sense of purpose and respect and improved your own community.
We are no longer a land of opportunity to start a new life, we are a cash register to prop up failing nations through remittances.
Now it's all illegal immigrants and somehow the unions all seem quiet while Detroit rots like an apple in August. Disturbingly creepy and devoid of hope.
Thankfully though, we can rest our heads on rotting floorboards in crime ridden streets knowing that we won't be thought of as racist. After all, isn't that why people fought and died to forge this nation?
