NYT Editorial Page Editor Calls Boehner Racist for Asking Obama to Delay Speech to Congress

By Clay Waters | January 04, 2012 | 16:34

A  A

Is House Speaker John Boehner an anti-Obama racist? Editorial Page editor Andrew Rosenthal all but accuses him in his Tuesday blog from Des Moines, “Nobody Likes to Talk About It, but It’s There.” (The web headline is blunter: “Republican Attacks Have Racist Undertones.”)

Actually, Rosenthal is all too happy to talk about racist Republicans if it helps Democrats politically, as he did on November 1, in one of his first blog posts: “...it was the Republicans who perfected the art of injecting racial fears into modern-day politics (remember Willie Horton in 1988?) and have conducted an unrelenting personal attack on President Obama that sometimes has not-so-subtle racial overtones.”

From Rosenthal’s Tuesday post:

Talking about race in American politics is uncomfortable and awkward. But it has to be said: There has been a racist undertone to many of the Republican attacks leveled against President Obama for the last three years, and in this dawning presidential campaign.

You can detect this undertone in the level of disrespect for this president that would be unthinkable were he not an African-American. Some earlier examples include: Rep. Joe Wilson shouting “you lie” at one of Mr. Obama’s first appearances before Congress, and House Speaker John Boehner rejecting Mr. Obama’s request to speak to a joint session of Congress – the first such denial in the history of our republic.

As for decorum during presidential appearances before Congress, Rosenthal has apparently forgotten the rumbles and hisses, hoots and hollerings of “No! No!” thrown at President Bush by Democrats (documented in his own newspaper) at Bush’s February 2005 State of the Union address when he spoke on Social Security reform.

In addition, Speaker Boehner did not “reject” Obama’s request to address Congress, but instead suggested that the president delay the speech for one day, to avoid it being held on the same night as a Republican presidential debate. (And that’s what happened.) Rosenthal’s suggestion that Boehner’s move was somehow racist is too pathetic to even merit a response.

Story Continues Below Ad ↓

Rosenthal's reasoning is equally ludicrous when he accuses Republican candidates Newt Gingrich and Mitt Romney of racism.

Sometimes the racism is more oblique. Newt Gingrich was prattling on the other day about giving “poor children” in “housing projects” jobs cleaning toilets in public schools to teach them there is an alternative to becoming a pimp or a drug dealer. These children, he said, have no work ethic. If there’s anyone out there who doesn’t get that poor kids in housing projects is code for minorities, he or she hasn’t been paying attention to American politics for the last 50 years. Mr. Gingrich is also fond of calling Mr. Obama “the greatest food stamp President in American history.”

Is Mr. Romney playing the same chords when he talks about how Mr. Obama wants to create an “entitlement society”? The president has said nothing of the sort, and the accusation seems of a piece with the old Republican saw that blacks collect the greatest share of welfare dollars.

The first use of the Willie Horton story . . .

Submitted by Galvanic on Wed, 01/04/2012 - 9:59pm.

. . . against Michael Dukakis in 1988 was not by the Republicans, but by Democratic Presidential hopeful Al Gore. The G.H.W. Bush campaign merely saw its effectiveness and ran with it after Dukakis won the Dem nomination.

what do you expect from the NYT?

Submitted by Billnonymous on Wed, 01/04/2012 - 4:56pm.

The paper's reason for existence is to campaign for Big Empty and liberal causes and slander their opponents, only the dumbest of the dumb find this paper credible anymore. Unfortunately, there are still plenty of dunces around who eat crap like that up with a spoon.

The stacked deck

Submitted by JPTSO3 on Wed, 01/04/2012 - 5:05pm.

30 years ago I got into a heated argument with a loudmouthed bully who was black. We were counselors at a camp and he treated everyone with contempt, but only a few people would confront him. I did and he finally flipped the race card, and said " you don't like me because I'm black" - I said: "no, I don't like you, because you're an asshole, asshole" A friend of mine was sitting close to the argument and said to the black guy, "yeah, you are an asshole - shutup." My friend is black.

They need something to be

Submitted by ant on Wed, 01/04/2012 - 5:26pm.

They need something to be angry about, so they will be unhappy and die trying if they have to. Take the 'Food stamp President remark', I've actually had libtards tell me that was racist, but that more whites are on Food stamps then blacks. ????? The obvious question then is, so how's it racist then? No answer.
Same with the inner-city youth working at school for money. They can't be honest enough to admit that there aren't many job opportunities for ghetto youth? I wonder if the kid that just wants to make an honest buck appreciates their 'protection'. Now if they truly wanted to be color-blind and pretend that Newt was willfully targeting blacks (by getting them work?). (Nobody claimed he wasn't, BTW, I knew what he was talking about-because I SEE it.) then they should probably being railing against him for unfair opportunity for white kids. You can't win with miserable, mindless, liberal fundamentalists

Dealing the Race Card

Submitted by Galvanic on Wed, 01/04/2012 - 5:58pm.

On the other hand, by insisting that poor is code for black, (under the same logic) Rosenthal must believe that all black Americans are poor.

Mr. Gingrich is also fond of calling Mr. Obama “the greatest food stamp President in American history.”

That's because more Americans are now on food stamps than at any time in American history.  It's a fact.

And most of the new food stamp recipients are unemployed American workers and their families.

Is Mr. Romney playing the same chords when he talks about how Mr. Obama wants to create an “entitlement society”?  The president has said nothing of the sort . . . .

Actually, in 2006, Obama told a mostly black audience that if he could remake American health care, he'd impose "a single payer system."  But he added that we can't get there in one leap, so we'll have to achieve in it in increments.  The first increment is obviously Obamacare, which has already extended Medicare coverage to millions, and imposed a fine on Americans who opt not to buy into a health insurance plan that meets his new standards.

. . . and the accusation seems of a piece with the old Republican saw that blacks collect the greatest share of welfare dollars.

That's an absurd stretch of logic to reach this statement.

Oh, those racist republicans

Submitted by ohio granny on Wed, 01/04/2012 - 7:45pm.

Imagine wanting the best for everyone...!!! How racist can you be. For everyone who wants one, to have a job? For wanting children to learn the value of work? For wanting government out of our lives except where the constitution allows? For not agreeing with Obama? I didn't agree with Clinton, Gore, Kerry or Carter. But surely I must be a racist. Couldn't possibly be their policies, must be their skin color. Oh, wait, only Obama is black (make that half black).

How sad that's the policy of the democrats that they want blacks and poor whites dependent on government. That is the way the democrats buys their votes. Shame on you democrats. You really are a pathetic lot of scumbags. You are paving your own way to hell and not with good intentions.

Submitted by Kenny Bunkport on Wed, 01/04/2012 - 7:47pm.

I think anyone who isn't vested in keeping Blacks down on the Democrat plantation are either responding negatively to the overuse of the race card, or they are indifferent to it.

Not much different from the boy who cried wolf. The more they use it every time someone disagrees with them, the more people just tune it out.

Submitted by BarneyFrankenstein on Wed, 01/04/2012 - 9:00pm.

For something thats "awkward" to talk about, liberals dont seem to EVER shy away from saying how racist the opposition to Obama is.

And this is somehow a new, fresh perspective...how? Its not like this point isnt spouted off on a hourly basis on MSNBC.

Liberals have been seeing white hoods and flaming crosses everywhere for 3 years now...

For the record, the only color we conservatives care about is Pink....that being the color of the slip Obama will be getting in November.

Submitted by bobsmom on Wed, 01/04/2012 - 9:09pm.

Anyone remember that old saying? This is all I think about when I hear the continual racist, racist, racist rhetoric. My brain immediately responds with the "OMG, if I hear Don McLean singing American Pie one more time I'm gonna light myself on fire" thought. And I like Don McLean, and I like the song, I am just SO tired of hearing it!! It doesn't mean anything any more to the majority of John Q. Public.

When in doubt, cover up incompetence with the RACE CARD!!!

Submitted by djwolf12 on Wed, 01/04/2012 - 9:55pm.

Yeah, that's the ticket. Obama wanted to force us to listen to him when we all wanted to watch the Packers Vs. Saints to kick off the NFL Year. It was the best season opener to date. President Golf Odroner's speech was a dud and I watched Reagan's speeches on Youtube. Watching grass grow is more inspiring than listening to our Marxist-In-Chief speak.

Gee I didnt know Al Gore was a racist republican. He was the first one to bring up Horton. The repub ad later that year didnt even show the race or ethnicity of Horton but somehow that is ignored by libtards as well in their fact devoid universe.

All MSM outlets are to play the race card early and often. Obamao's record is so dismal that it's the only way to distract us from it.
