Obama's '57 States' Gaffe Finally Makes the New York Times News Page

By Clay Waters | November 18, 2011 | 08:58

A  A

A day after Times Watch noted that the New York Times virtually ignored Obama’s supposedly “famous”  “57 states” gaffe during the 2008 campaign, reporter Michael Shear rectified that omission, albeit in a story on gaffe-prone GOP candidates, "Flubs Rubbing Some Republicans the Wrong Way," in Wednesday's paper.

The Republican presidential candidates have served comedians a full platter of laughs this year -- a steady diet of gaffes, misstatements, puzzled looks and long, awkward pauses.

To a remarkable degree, the candidates have turned the cringe-inducing moments to their advantage, asserting that they demonstrate an authenticity different from the slick professionalism of politicians in Washington.

But the embarrassing moments are piling up, and some veteran Republicans are beginning to wonder whether the cumulative effect weakens the party brand, especially in foreign policy and national security, where Republicans have typically dominated Democrats.

“It is an ‘Animal House.’ It’s a food fight,” said Kenneth Duberstein, a chief of staff to President Ronald Reagan. “Honestly, the Republican debates have become a reality show. People have to be perceived as being capable of governing this country, of being the leader of the free world.”

Shear made history with the first reference to “57 states” to appear in a news story in the Times.

And Democrats have made plenty of gaffes in the past, including President Obama, who once said he had visited 57 states.

On Tuesday, Times Watch had quoted Shear’s comment on a nytimes.com podcast referring to Obama’s “famous” flub: "President Obama had that famous thing where he once said I think there were 57 states." So famous that the quote never appeared in a news story in the Times, until Wednesday.

Big, fat, hairy deal!

Submitted by motherbelt on Fri, 11/18/2011 - 9:21am.

And Democrats have made plenty of gaffes in the past, including President Obama, who once said he had visited 57 states.

In a 1000-word article, that's the ONLY mention of any of the "plenty" of  flubs by Obama or any Democrat.

However: Republicans are serving up a steady diet of gaffes, misstatements, puzzled looks and long, awkward pauses.

Also, there was never any mention that any of those Obama flubs "rub[bed] some Democrats the wrong way."

Yeah, well that's because Democrats don't have any standards at all, other than ideological, for their candidates.

Gee Obama's recent gaffe

Submitted by eaglewingz08 on Fri, 11/18/2011 - 10:04am.

Gee Obama's recent gaffe calling Hawaii part of Asia apparently is true since that's not reported as a gaffe in the article.

My Guess

Submitted by Kingfish17 on Fri, 11/18/2011 - 1:40pm.

I'm thinking that the grade school madrasa in Indonesia taught their students that Hawaii is part of Asia. Why else would those words flow so effortlessly from Obama's mouth? He didn't learn that as a student in an American school.

Obama's gaffe's and the wet Grey Lady - leader of the MSM pack

Submitted by Gary Hall on Fri, 11/18/2011 - 12:11pm.

. . . wow - "and the Democrat's have made plenty of gaffe's in the past." And, they finally mention Obama's one 57 state gaffe. (I'm still wondering if he'd been to all 50. If not - then he made a gaffe, in the process of lying.)

No mention of Joe Biden here?

Indeed, they are blind to certain evident truths -- and intend to keep the populace blind.

This MSM stands in the way of our continued freedoms and liberty.

And someone can correct me if i get something wrong, but as my feeble memory recalls, he said he had been to 57 states, and had one more to go, because his staff was only letting him get to the continental states, not Alaska or Hawaii. So, no, he even admitted he hadn't been to them all.

Maybe someone should keep a running tally

Submitted by TempusFugit on Fri, 11/18/2011 - 12:27pm.

of conservative gaffes to see if the total reaches Blonde's 99 and counting (c'mon 100! You can do it Barry old boy!) Obama gaffe list. I'd be willing to bet hard money that the CUMULATIVE (as in all Republican nominees combined) Republican gaffe by month average is lower than Obama's. But the MSM almost totally ignores that, but anytime Palin or Bachmann says anything remotely gaffe worthy it's front page news

I'm going to hold that one in reserve....I want something rather epic, or with pictures for Numero One Hundred.

Actually, I have a couple of lists I've picked up recently, and have to do some "real" work, putting everything on a spreadsheet to find non-duplicates....as you can imagine, that's going to be a task (LOL, charting the progress of the Next Iron Chef is not, my chart is much better than wiki's).

help with obama's top ten Thanksgiving list...

Submitted by vrwc13 on Fri, 11/18/2011 - 6:42pm.

Blonde, one should be coming soon...

Based on your count, he makes one about every 10 days since he has been in office.

And since he has such a high regard for this country, my bet is he will mess up real bad about Thanksgiving...

Anyone wanna make a guess on what it could be?

OR...

How about the top ten things obama is Thankful for (I'll start and you copy and paste the list adding your favorite):

  1. MSNBC as, "essentially," the "Obama re-election team.
  2. 85% of the country think 'Solyndra' is the name of one of his daughters
  3. pizza wasn't a vegetable while Mr. Cain was in the pizza business
  4.
  5.
  6.
  7.
  8.
  9.
  10.

This is at least the second time Obama has fumbled with a door. The first time that I recall was Odudbo fumbling at an exterior White House window he thought was a door.

The title of that Bali article should have been something like "Obama Does It Again", but we all know the Media covers his rear.
