NYT's Krugman Disappoints His Leftist Legions: 'Why I'm Not in Zuccotti Park'

By Clay Waters | October 13, 2011 | 17:26

New York Times columnist Paul Krugman’s Tuesday morning blog post no doubt left his hordes of leftist fans bereft: “Why I’m Not In Zuccotti Park.” That’s the space in Lower Manhattan that’s been occupied by the loose affiliation of leftist Wall Street protesters for four weeks running. The brief item in full:

Some readers have been asking me to go make a speech at one of the OWS demonstrations. If you think about it, however, you’ll see why I can’t.

I’ve been granted the enormous privilege of expounding my own views twice a week in the world’s greatest newspaper. I try to make the best use of that privilege, doing all I can to get the truth across and also advocating for what I believe to be the right policies. There are, however, some restrictions that come with the privilege; one of them is not crossing the line between advocate and activist. And there are good reasons for drawing that line.

Just in case you were wondering.

One of Krugman’s many gushing commenters wrote in response: “Paul, your great work as a scholar and truth-teller are with folks at all times in Zuccotti and everywhere OWS exists. You ARE in the park. Thanks for all you do. Your work requires courage and has earned our respect many times over.”

Krugman’s pompous response inspired a Twitter hashtag from less reverent readers, #Krugmanexcuses.

I dunno why Krudman wouldn't go down there..............those are his peeps, and they have a lot of drugs...........but maybe he'd be worried about wrinkling his suitcoat, or scuffing his shoes.

Submitted by drsamherman on Thu, 10/13/2011 - 7:38pm.

If he really supports those spoiled iStink hippie wannabes, he could just show up at the park and talk to them for fifteen minutes. Instead, he knows it means no more corporate money flowing into his personal bank account when the lecture circuit gigs dry up faster than a snowflake in San Antonio in July.

I agree, he is a coward, if Wall street collapses, he is homeless and will be living in the park permanately and he knows it.

It would appear Krugman prefers the sanctuary of his own multi-million dollar estate, where he is free to pursue whatever late-night internet perversions he fancies at the moment.

I just KNOW it is on purpose, what a fabulous tweak. I wonder who is doing Drudge's web design these days? Because THAT was an EXCELLENT joke.

Objective? Hardly.

Submitted by Galvanic on Fri, 10/14/2011 - 12:31pm.

He may not want to be an activist, but he admits to being an advocate. Neither is objective.

Krugman is one of the self-described intelligensia who encourage and even incite others into action while they remain secure in the saftey and comfort of their offices and lecture halls.

I have more respect for the people camped out in their demonstrations than I'd ever hold for the likes of Krugman.

Good show, Paul

Submitted by CobraMan on Fri, 10/14/2011 - 3:27pm.

So Paul, you admit that, while you support the OWS movement, you really can't involve yourself in it, for that would threaten your position at the New York Times. In other words, you value your job with a corporation much more than you value your own beliefs and ideals. WOW! You're really going to gain friends amongst the OWS with that revelation, NOT!
