NY Times on Poor, Disrespected Obama: Republicans 'Simply Do Not Like the Man'

By Clay Waters | September 07, 2011 | 15:31

A  A

When President Obama announced he wanted to deliver his latest speech on the economy to a joint session of Congress on the same night as a GOP presidential debate, House speaker John Boehner politely requested the administration wait one day. Obama acceded, to the chagrin of the left and the New York Times.

Reporter Jennifer Steinhauer devoted a full story to the squabble in Friday’s edition, focusing almost solely on the supposed “disrespect” shown by Republicans to poor, put-upon President Obama: “G.O.P. vs. Obama: Disrespect or Just Politics?”

While most of those fights stemmed from deep policy divides, the relentless acrimony between President Obama and Congressional Republicans also seems strikingly personal, almost petty.

And Democrats worry that Mr. Obama, hampered, too, by his own inexperience and dispassionate style, is increasingly weakened by what they fume is a party that fundamentally disrespects him and his office. They fear the outcome as Congress and the White House face off on a host of new issues: the national deficit and finishing this year’s budget, reauthorization of a controversial federal aviation bill and the fate of the cash-strapped Postal Service. The relationship was foreshadowed in 2009 when Representative Joe Wilson, a South Carolina Republican, yelled “You lie!” during a presidential address to Congress -- a remarkably rare outburst on the House floor. Since then, Congressional Republicans have turned down requests for White House meetings, refused to return the president’s call and walked out of budget talks.

Hmm. Just how "rare" is it for presidents to be mocked in speeches to Congress, and when does the Times decide to make an issue of it? The Times hid its indignation quite well when President George W. Bush got disrespectful hoots and hisses from Democrats for mentioning Social Security reform in his 2005 State of the Union address.

Then, on Wednesday, Speaker John A. Boehner became what historians say was the first ever to tell a sitting president that no, he could not deliver an address to a joint session of Congress on the date of his choice. On Thursday, Representative Joe Walsh said in a Twitter message that he would fly home to Illinois rather than serve as “a prop of another one of the president’s speeches.”

It seems they simply do not like the man.

Steinhauer eventually confessed that even some Democrats found Obama’s unilateral decision on the speech timing a bit rude, before playing the tired race card.

There is the persistent and deeply uncomfortable question of race. Many African-Americans, including black lawmakers, and even white Democrats, have complained that some of the disrespect for Mr. Obama stems from distaste among some whites at the idea of seeing a black man in the Oval Office.

And yet even with his abysmal poll numbers

Submitted by Jer on Wed, 09/07/2011 - 4:38pm.

which have sharply declined in virtually every category, Obama is still regarded as "likable" by approximately 70% of the general public. Why are you and others here so out of step with the majority of Americans?

My hunch is that internet ideological echo chambers tend to encourage and intensify ODS, just as they did with respect to BDS a few years ago.

Jer, I think most people are

Submitted by Liberallies on Wed, 09/07/2011 - 4:53pm.

Jer,

I think most people are like me. I do not know President Obama personally. I neither like him nor dislike him as a person. If I were to be called and asked this poll question, I would land in the likeable as a person.

However, as President Obama, man, he is terrible.

But as a human being, I have no doubt that he might be fun to debate with and he may put forth some interesting ideas which in theory might work, but in practice are not even worth considering.

didn't Bush finish with a very high, "likeable" "we'll love to have a beer with Bush" but 20% Presidential approval rating?

At the end, though, as I once told a friend who informed me she hated Bush, you do not know the President on a personal basis, so how can you judge him enough to hate him.

I don't know anything about that 70% 'likeable' number, Jer............just like all the other polls.........but I personally don't like the guy at all- for what he is - and I can tell you that a majority of people that I know don't like him either - professionally (can we say that about this amateur???) or personally. Of course, I have a tendancy to hang around with barbarians and barbarianettes, who are mostly sons and daughters of bitches.

Jer, Left wing blogs thought

Submitted by Liberallies on Wed, 09/07/2011 - 9:38pm.

Jer,

Left wing blogs thought that Bush was the most evil, the most radical Right wing President in American history. It was a bit surreal! It was hard to miss the countless Nazi and Hitler comparisons.

Honestly and I am sure we can debate this until our faces are blue, President Bush was not a very Conservative President. Many of his policies aligned better with John F. Kennedy's Presidency than Ronald Reagan's.

It's the trend, stupid

Submitted by Injest on Wed, 09/07/2011 - 6:56pm.

Obama is still regarded as "likable" by approximately 70% of the general public. Why are you and others here so out of step with the majority of Americans?

So is “Larry the cable guy”, would you want “Larry the cable guy” running the country?

A new poll NBC/WSJ released today is not full of great news for President Obama. He hits new job approval lows in that poll and 60 percent of respondents disapprove of his handling of the economy. However, 65 percent of those polled give Obama high marks for his “being easygoing and likable.”

BTW, Jan. 2011, eight months ago Obama's Likeable rating was 83%, today it's 65%, that's a decline of 18 points, the trend is clear, Obama's going down on all levels.

Injest, Great points. I am

Submitted by Liberallies on Wed, 09/07/2011 - 9:36pm.

Injest,

Great points. I am sure we all have friends whom we have beers with and we like, but we would NEVER elect them to run anything on planet Earth, not even the lawn mower! :-)

I still say, however, it is hard to hate anyone we do not know personally. Even if you know them, I think it is hard, at least for me, to hate anyone. It might be because Spanish is my first language. In Spanish, "Odiar", "To Hate", is an incredibly strong feeling. In fact, I have taught my children to never use the word hate. It is not allowed in my house.

I never liked it when people claimed to hate Bush and did not know him. I personally don't like it when people claim to hate Obama the person. None of us know him. But I do strongly dislike 99.9% of his policies!

Thanks for setting me straight, idiot...

Submitted by Jer on Wed, 09/07/2011 - 10:22pm.

I didn't care for "Larry the cable guy" at first, but he's sort of grown on me. Maybe he's what America has been waiting for.

Otherwise, as Liberallies noted, your point about the 18% decline in Obama's likability factor is a good one. Still, based on what one reads at this website--the endless claims of the President being a "Marxist/socialist, terrorist-loving, America-hating, mean-spirited, racist Muslim brute"--one is a bit surprised that out in the real world the majority view remains somewhat more benign.

Which is why I settle for

Submitted by dscott on Fri, 09/09/2011 - 12:47am.

Which is why I settle for Hanlon's Razor: Never attribute to malice that which is adequately explained by stupidity.

It matters not what Obama's true motivation is whether he truly believes he is doing good, or intends to destroy the country or is just ideologically blinded to his folly, it is the results that are at issue. This is especially true when a group of people need to make a change in leadership, demonization is entirely unnecessary and in fact an obstacle to replacing a failed leader. Even a likable leader can be incompetent and thus bad for the country. Jimmy Carter was likable but incompetent and no one believed he deliberately tried to destroy the economy but he had to go. This is no different with Obama.

Personnally, I'm not buying into the demonization stuff with an intent to destroy the economy, his problem is rigid ideology, he can't adjust his views to realities on the ground. What makes the situation worse is he genuinely thinks he's smarter than the collective wisdom of 300 + million people and hence he tells people what he thinks they want to hear with ZERO intention of doing it in order to do it his way with the full intent of saying "I told you so" later. Many people interpret this deceptive behavior as evil intent, but stubborness does at times manifests itself as determination to the deluded, and Obama is deluded.

Ant, but how can we claim

Submitted by Liberallies on Thu, 09/08/2011 - 12:00pm.

Ant,

but how can we claim the higher moral ground when we hate Obama as much as the Left hates Bush and any Republican?

In order to have such a strong feeling of hate for an individual we must know what is inside of his head, know why he does the things he does, in other words, we must know his/her heart and unless any one of us is God, we do not know the heart of anyone and the "why" behind his/her actions.

I use to get upset with my Liberal friends when they spoke so ill and so bad about President Bush. Why? Because when a President is disrespected, we are spitting on the Presidency. No different with President Obama, when we speak so ill, so badly of Presiden Obama, we are also disrespecting the Presidency. of course, this does not mean we can't vehmently, strongly, openly and very loud oppose a President, his policies, views, etc.

I just think we need to respect our Presidents, whether Liberal or Conservative, a bit more. We need to respect the Presidency.

I dislike President Obama's policies, Liberal views. I believe they are bad for this nation, for my children, but my family and I pray for President Obama and his family every night before we go to sleep.

All that being said, I find it amusing and quite hypocritical of the NYT to now be doing stories about the Right not liking Obama. Geez, did they miss the 8 years of the Liberal hate for Bush? Did anyone see a NYT story asking if Liberals hate his policies or also Bush as a person? NOPE! in fact, NYT joined in the Liberal hate against Bush.

I wish a Liberal could answer the question of....why are so many Liberals such hypocrites? why?

Higher moral ground went out

Submitted by dscott on Fri, 09/09/2011 - 12:57am.

Higher moral ground went out the window when Obama dissed the Tea Party from the very beginning. Imagine the arrogance of a man (and the MSM) being obsessed with his dog when over a million people are in the streets in Washington DC protesting ObamaCare. As far as Obama was concerned demonstration? What demonstration? His total demeanor was shockingly dismissive. If anyone is to blame for the current environment of disrespect, it is Barack Obama who has shown little respect for the people over whom he lords his power. Change must start at the top and with himself, Barack Obama needs to look in the mirror.

Liberalies,

Submitted by ant on Fri, 09/09/2011 - 1:27am.

I understand what you're saying, but dscott gave my response better than I could have. I cannot respect or like a man (child) that doesn't respect or like me or nearly half of the people he's supposed to be President to, and his constant painting of his 'enemies' is decidedly un-Presidential. If anyone disrespects the Office, it is him and his wife. I do possess some amount of discernment, so though, you're right, I do not know what is in his heart, I do know lies when I hear them and destructive actions when I witness them. Over the years I have come to despise, for good reason, the mindset and attitude that Odumbo embodies. He is the personification of the political, soft-handed, empty- speechifyin', divide and make a profit class that I am, frankly, sick to death of and that was, allegedley, going to 'change' with his tingly, historic-al inauguration. F' em. The 'civility' and 'co-operation' BS is over, if it, in fact, ever existed.

you've proven that at least a small percentage of the conservative population has a bigoted viewpoint. Einstein's comment was correct. To say there can't be a single one would be lunacy and flies in the face of reality.

The rest of the story is that two of those people left their jobs in shame. Which they should. I was always taught that your personal life does not belong at your job (never the twain shall meet) The aide in the office of your third example - I am not certain what happened to them but the left wing media had a blast with it so they likely have no peace or privacy anymore. Does the punishment fit the crime? I have no idea. Will it change their viewpoint? I doubt it.

I grew up in a 100% liberal household (with the exception of my father) and extended family (one of which was a lifetime elected democrat offical) and let me say they are the largest collection of racist bigoted people you will ever meet. I am constantly having to explain/apologize for my family's behavior to my children.

WHEN he took over insurance companies, car companies, banks, etc., people said it didn't matter.

WHEN he took away student loans from the banks and put it through the government, people said it didn't matter.

WHEN he designed plans to take over the health care system and put it under government control, people said it didn't matter.

WHEN he claimed he was a Christian during the election and tapes were later made public that showed Obama speaking to a Muslim group and 'stating' that he was raised a Muslim; was educated as a Muslim; and that he is still a Muslim--people said it didn't matter.

WHEN he set into motion a plan to take over the control of all energy in the United States through Cap and Trade, people said it didn't matter.

WHEN he finally completed his transformation of America into a Socialist State , people finally woke up---but it was too late.

Add these up one by one and you get a phenomenal score that points to the fact that Barrack Hussein Obama is determined to turn America into a Marxist-Socialist society.

Great Summary

Submitted by jon_torlin on Wed, 09/07/2011 - 5:23pm.

That was a great summary, dr-go.

All those things are not just things he did as a potus(bogus as it is), but what drives him as a ....I was going to say man, but he's not a man, but a manchild.  His actions, all of them, define who he is.  And especially consorting with terrorists (Ayers) and hateful people (Wright among others), birds of a feather do apply in this case, and don't like them which leads to not liking him.

Again, a person's actions defines who they are, not just what they say.  Deeds, not words, as the wise John Fletcher said.  And all of his actions, EVERY ONE of them, lead me to not just not like him, but I despise him enough to the point that I consider him an enemy of not just me, but to the country.

Part of this "likeable" stuff comes from charisma and if you get blinded by that, especially if you know so little about him(until you do the research), you get suckered into liking him even though he will use you as a means to an end.  He uses that as a tool, but we already know he doesn't care about anyone except himself.

I may not know him personally, but I know more than enough about him that I do NOT want to know him on a personal level.

God, that just makes me sick to my stomach.

"Have you stopped beating your wife?"

Submitted by Galvanic on Wed, 09/07/2011 - 4:41pm.

This is a corollary of that kind of no-win answer. Here's how it works --

QUESTION TO GOP: "Are you going to respond to the President's address?"

ANSWER :A": Yes.

DEM RESPONSE: So, you are going to be disrespectful to the President.

- or -

ANSWER "B": No.

DEM RESPONSE: So, you are going to be disrespectful to the President.

I disagree with Dana Perino. I think it is very tactical to pass on giving a response.  Afterall, it's merely a trap set for the GOP candidates.  After a GOP face responds, each GOP candidate will be asked if they agree or disagree.

By not responding after the speech, the President looks less and less relevant to a solution.  It's as if they are saying, "We don't care what you say anymore."

Remember the game starts soon

Submitted by Dan The Man 2 on Wed, 09/07/2011 - 6:07pm.

Remember the game starts soon after Obama's speech. The GOP doesn't want Obama to be close to the game and have the GOP to delay the game.

Submitted by Liberallies on Wed, 09/07/2011 - 4:59pm.

I find it funny that the NYT is making this personal when they actually cheered on and supported the personal attacks on President Bush, his wife, his children, his parents, his supporters, etc, etc.

Where was the NYTs story asking if people calling Bush a Nazi, Hitler, comparing his supporters to the Nazis, etc was Disrespect for Bush: Do Liberals Simply Dislike The Man?!

Amazing the hypocrisy of the Left, of the NYT. It is ok to go after Bush, but if you go after Obama, it is personal.

the man. The reason has nothing to do with his color. It has to do with what he is doing to the Country. In addition to bankrupting us, he is turning us into a European like socialist state.

I also don't like his lack of class, his living a life of luxury on taxpayer money while his countrymen suffer and for his always passing blame on to others.

He is lousy as a president and he is lousy as a man and as such, he sets a lousy example for our next generation to follow.

He is no George Washington. Shoot, forget that, the man is not even a George Bush!

Submitted by drsamherman on Wed, 09/07/2011 - 8:47pm.

"They don't like the man."? That sounds like a whiny seventh grader bemoaning her unpopularity.

What is there to like about him? He is a talker and not a doer. He whines, deflects and blames everybody but himself for his own ineptitude in handling every situation. Without his teleprompter or a script, he is inarticulate, inaccurate and cold. His only consistency is incompetence. Hardly the profile of someone you would "like".

Oh, I'm sorry, was that too incendiary? Not politically lavishing enough? OK, then, a liberal radical.
