Welcome to the Race: Gov. Rick Perry 'Stumbled Into the Texas Miracle' Says NY Times

By Clay Waters | August 17, 2011 | 16:28

A  A

As the presidential candidacy of Republican Gov. Rick Perry of Texas revs to life, the New York Times is doing its best in both its opinion and news sections to throw sand in the gears.

Times reporter James McKinley Jr. actively led the cheers for Perry’s Democratic opponent during Perry’s 2010 gubernatorial race. This time around, columnist Paul Krugman on Monday tried and failed to knock down Perry’s successful economic record as Texas governor with a misleading column, “The Texas Unmiracle.”

After refuting Krugman’s specious points on wages and population growth, Kevin Williamson at National Review Online concluded: “All of this is too obvious for Paul Krugman to have overlooked it. And I expect he didn’t. I believe that he is presenting willfully incomplete and misleading information to the public, and using his academic credentials to prop up his shoddy journalism.”

(And here’s a detailed numerical analysis of the job picture in Texas, demonstrating why “Texas is adding jobs faster than any other state but still has a relatively high unemployment rate.”)

Times reporter Clifford Krauss followed up on Tuesday from Houston to poke more holes in Perry’s economic record, “In Texas Jobs Boom, Crediting a Leader, or Luck,” using loaded language to ponder if Perry had been merely lucky, or had merely “stumbled into the Texas miracle,” or perhaps gotten a “free ride” off his state’s ample natural resources.

Texas is home to at least one-third of the jobs created nationwide since the recession ended. The state’s economy is growing about three times as fast as the national rate. Home prices have remained stable even as much of the country has seen sharp declines.

Is Texas just lucky, or has the state benefited from exceptional leadership? As Gov. Rick Perry campaigned Monday in Iowa for the Republican presidential nomination – with the economy dominating the national political landscape -- the answer to that question is central to his candidacy.

Story Continues Below Ad ↓

....

But some economists as well as Perry skeptics suggest that Mr. Perry stumbled into the Texas miracle. They say that the governor has essentially put Texas on autopilot for 11 years, and it was the state’s oil and gas boom -- not his political leadership -- that kept the state afloat. They also doubt that the Texas model, regardless of Mr. Perry’s role in shaping it, could be effectively applied to the nation’s far more complex economic problems.

....

And if Mr. Perry were to win the Republican nomination, he would face critics, among them Democrats, who have long complained that the state’s economic health has come at a steep a price: a long-term hollowing out of the state’s prospects because of deep cuts to education spending, low rates of investment in research and development, and a disparity in the job market that confines many blacks and Hispanics to minimum-wage jobs without health insurance.

....

Few debate that Mr. Perry, 61, has been true to a “less government is better government” philosophy in one of the few states without an income tax. The question his detractors raise, however, is whether Mr. Perry has gotten a free ride -- and has gone untested -- because of the state’s natural resources.

TRANSLATION: Perry was wise enough not to derail the boom by increasing government spending.

They also doubt that the Texas model, regardless of Mr. Perry’s role in shaping it, could be effectively applied to the nation’s far more complex economic problems.

TRANSLATION:  In other states where state and local tax rates and onerous business codes deter new businesses from starting up and encourage others to flee to states like, er, Texas, Perry's model would be obstructed by special interests who are nurtured by the state bureaucracy and otherwise noncompetitive.

It was Ann

Why..., that would mean that it was under the G. W. Bush Texas Governor watch that the Texas Miracle occurred...

Actually, it was Ann Richards. She was a Democrat Governor of Texas from 1991 to 1995. GWB beat her in the 94 election. Looks like both the guys have been coasting off of all the wonderful stuff Ann Richards (D) did for the state.

(OK, sarc off for a second... Ann Richards did a fine job as Governor. GWB and Rick Perry have done a better job. I don't mean to dis on Ann. She was very popular even as a Democrat in a very conservative state. Then again, if she had been in any other state, they would have thrown her out of the party for being too conservative.)

You're right it was Ann

Submitted by billyjack on Thu, 08/18/2011 - 10:29am.

Credit must be given to Ann Richards. She singlehandedly dismantled the Democratic Party in Texas. The power of the Democrats in Texas through the Briscoe,Mattox and Wright wing of the party really had a hard time getting along with the glue heads, gays and multiculturalists that Ann brought to Austin. Since the former had all the money, the rift resulted in the Republican party holding virtually every statewide office since Ann was elected.

Probably out to give Clayton Williams a little credit for throwing the election.

The State of the State

Submitted by ArcherB on Wed, 08/17/2011 - 4:42pm.

Few debate that Mr. Perry, 61, has been true to a “less government is better government” philosophy in one of the few states without an income tax. The question his detractors raise, however, is whether Mr. Perry has gotten a free ride -- and has gone untested -- because of the state’s natural resources.

Every state has natural resources. The entire nation has natural resources. Why isn't every state doing as well as Texas? Why is the nation as a whole having problems?

Maybe it has something to do with government policies that allow us to take advantage of those natural resources.

Also:

They say that the governor has essentially put Texas on autopilot for 11 years...

Are they saying that George W. Bush, the governor before Perry, left Texas in such an outstanding position that we could literally ride that for 11 years without any competent leadership whatsoever? If they really believe this, should I be surprised that they don't give GWB credit?

Oh, wait! I bet they'll give credit to Ann Richards, the Democrat governor of Texas from 1991 to 1995. I bet that Democrat did such a great job in four years that we've been able to coast for the past 16.

Submitted by The Glen on Wed, 08/17/2011 - 5:01pm.

I will give this to Perry, he was worked his hardest to bring companies to this state. He has actively approached corporations outside of Texas to bring them to this state, even passing tax breaks for companies that move here. I may disagree with him on certain issues, but when it came to bringing jobs to this state I could not have asked for him to do more.

Wha...? Did someone take a picture of those "Blacks and Hispanics Need Not Apply" signs? I sure hope so, because I really don't see how any economic factors would confine any one group of people to minimum wage jobs.

Over the last 20 years or so, Texas has been governed by a Chimpy followed by a moron. That about sums it up?

On the other hand, if America had fared 1/3rd as well under Krugmannas Texas did under two Governors who didn't particularly like each other, old' Paul would be defecating Nobel Peace Prizes by the butt-load.

Texas is an "unmiracle". A miracle is a supernatural intervention to the natural order. But Texas by employing time tested conservative principles, is the natural order when proper principles are followed.
