Former NYT Reporter Goodman Compares G.O.P. to Terrorists at Huffington Post

By Clay Waters | July 28, 2011 | 12:07

A  A

Peter Goodman, the former Times left-wing economics writer  who is now business editor at the Huffington Post, called Republicans terrorists in a Monday column. The Observer’s Kat Stoeffel explained:

Huffington Post Business Editor Peter Goodman wrote a provocative column today. It was no Esquire “Have More Satisfying Sex Than DSK”, but it did compare Republicans to terrorists.

“The same Republicans who have so eagerly prosecuted the war on terror, running up huge deficits in the process, are now behaving like the enemies on which they have squandered so much blood and treasure: They are acting like terrorists. Yes, terrorists.”

Apparently hyperbole does not fly at the new, grown-up AOL HuffPost. A few hours later, the headline downgraded “terrorism” to a mere “hostage” situation and the column’s lede was rewritten. The toned down Mr. Goodman wrote:

“In refusing to lift the nation’s debt ceiling without first extracting spending cuts, Republicans are in essence threatening to obliterate the underpinnings of the global financial system -- the bed-rock faith that, come what may, Uncle Sam always makes good. How can any rational negotiation take place in the face of such a threat?”

Democrats REFUSE to stop

Submitted by rbosque on Thu, 07/28/2011 - 12:17pm.

Democrats REFUSE to stop spending money we don't have, and WE are the terrorists? I have an econ degree too but unlike Mr. Goodman, I'm haven't sold my principles and turned into a left-wing hack. If Mr. Goodman were honest, he'd know and write that it is fiscally insane to continue spending at this rate, it all has to be paid back, our expendiatures have to be balanced or we can soon default, investments will dry up and our economy will really tank.

Mr. Goodman is a wrong-headed idealogue whose cheerleading for the left will result in a catastrophic economic meltdown.

Why is Huffington-AOL losing money-this stuff

Submitted by felizagain on Thu, 07/28/2011 - 12:19pm.

AOL is not long for this world due to the silly association it made with Arianna Huffington and Huffington Post, and the long detailed way one must log in to comment on anything - it's all left wing Huffington Post connected these days. They have seen usership decline, e-mail service decline, all of it, slowly disappearing.

Why?

This nonsense.

Hey, people want a place to get an easy e-mail account. Not a mandated left wing old fashioned internet website.

Terrorists? For disagreeing strongly with the president? For supporting tax cuts, not tax increases? For questioning the latest band-aid? For -oh, I don't know - reading the Constitution and coming up with a different set of ideas than this guy?

I don't care for Boxer or Feinstein or Sharpton or Rangel or even good old 'bulldog' Weiner (in his heyday). I never thought of them as terrorists, nor would it have come to mind to spew that garbage at them to make a point.

Clearly, this guy has run out of logic, and is jumping to his trash bin for anything else to throw at them.

Culture of civility of Barack Obama continues.....terrorists, hostage, Hezbollah, words from the left for Boehner and company.

Nice. Classy.

The democrats can now see clearly their own fate. they are going down and down hard. Like a sailor caught in the hold of ship, they are gasping for their last breath before water removes all oxygen.

Thomas Jefferson warned, "To

Submitted by rbosque on Thu, 07/28/2011 - 1:07pm.

Thomas Jefferson warned, "To preserve independence ... we must not let our rulers load us with perpetual debt. We must make our election between economy and Liberty, or profusion and servitude. ... The fore horse of this frightful team is public debt. Taxation follows that, and in its turn wretchedness and oppression."

Statists want to destroy the founding freedoms of this country. So do terrorists. The goal is the same: CONTROL.

But, hey. We have John Boehner and Eric Cantor to save us.

The MO - D's calling R's terrorists (and any number of other . .

Submitted by Gary Hall on Thu, 07/28/2011 - 1:19pm.

Oh, I probably can't make the case that Karen Bass, D., CA is the originator in what has become the easy and free use of the horrible word, "terrorist," in describing those on the other side who support a different view; however, perhaps I can provide a good example of how our national media has enabled such vitriolic rhetoric to become mainstream -- certainly within the liberal media and the Democratic Party:

Back in June, 2009, then California Assembly Speaker, Karen Bass, D., now a US Congresswoman from LA's 33rd District, offered this up in an  Los Angeles Times full page feature interview - See NB coverage here:

  • The Republicans were essentially threatened and terrorized against voting for revenue. Now [some] are facing recalls. They operate under a terrorist threat: "You vote for revenue and your career is over." I don't know why we allow that kind of terrorism to exist. I guess it's about free speech, but it's extremely unfair.

A few days later, Karen Bass, was back in the same paper, in  Speaker boycotts California budget session:

  • Assembly Speaker Karen Bass (D-Los Angeles), who had left closed-door talks Sunday night "very discouraged," boycotted a morning negotiating session . .

Naw -- I guess that's not what the R's could call "terrorism."  Well, my goodness, what the MSM would have done if a Republican had called her a terrorist. The Democrats controlled both houses of the CA state legislature; she's the Speaker, and she walks out and boycotts the future of the State's budget. Hmm.

So. In reward for this kind of hate speech, here's what the LA Times puts out the next day, in  Karen Bass is a target atop the California Assembly:

  • Assembly Speaker Karen Bass takes pride in being a consensus-builder, a soothing and maternal let's-get-along kind of leader. Now please pardon the interruption -- Madam Speaker is ticked off.

She's "soothing and material? Sorry, I've still got "terrorized,"  "terrorist threat," and "that kind of terrorism," burning in my ears. She's "ticked off?" Shouldn't everyone else be "ticked off" at her? Continues::

  • That rare outburst earned an ovation from her Democratic caucus. But Bass has no time to be sanguine. A few Capitol insiders say that barely a year into her tenure, attempts to topple Bass are inevitable.

Actually she termed out, and waltzed into departing radical liberal Congresswoman Diane Watson's seat; supported, naturally, by the Los Angeles Times.

The national MSM supports hate speech from the left, as long as it is directed towards the right.

And now - it's most everywhere - most any day, any hour.

Yeah...........I look into

Submitted by killa37 on Thu, 07/28/2011 - 1:24pm.

Yeah...........I look into the mirror and I see a terrorist. And when I think about my father, I also see a terrorist. And even my dear old Mother..........she's a terrorist too!! I hope the TSA gives her a strip search the next time she gets on a plane, because she is dangerous!!! And I know a lot of other terrorists too.............

And didn't I catch that embarrassingly stupid idiot Al Franken posting a sign in the Senate yesterday that said 'welcome terrorists', or something like that??? Why would he post that sign, if we are allready here??? I'll tell ya - if a clown like that can be in the Senate..........stick a fork in us, because we are DONE!! Oh..........wait............look at the office of the Presidency.......

the real terrorists are

Submitted by ohio granny on Thu, 07/28/2011 - 4:59pm.

The real terrorists are the democrats and their enablers in the MSM. They are the ones that are trying to destroy this country. The more power they lose, the nastier they become.

No longer are people being fooled by their lies and deceit. As they lose more power they will become nastier and nastier. It won't help them retain their power because we are on to their tricks. They will be defeated.
