NYT Portrays Obama as the Pragmatic 'Centrist' and 'Level-Headed Referee' of the Budget Crisis

By Clay Waters | April 11, 2011 | 13:37

A  A

Obama the centrist? That’s the takeaway from New York Times reporter Jeff Zeleny’s Sunday “news analysis,” “President Adopts a Measured Course to Recapture the Middle.” The original online headline was even more misleading: “President Obama Adopts Centrist Approach.”

President Obama opened the week by calling on Democrats to embrace his re-election campaign. He closed it by praising Republicans for forging a compromise to cut spending this year and avert a government shutdown.

The juxtaposition made clearer than ever the more centrist governing style Mr. Obama has adopted since his party’s big losses in November and his recapture-the-middle strategy for winning a second term.

Actually, Zeleny has considered Obama centrist, or at least a “pragmatist,” from his first year in office, well before the 2010 election. Here's Zeleny on Obama the pragmatist in December 2009: “He delivered a mix of realism and idealism....he continued a pattern evident throughout his public career of favoring pragmatism over absolutes.”

On Sunday Zeleny positioned Obama in the center, at least from the view of the far-left wing of his party:

The president may be viewed as liberal by some of his conservative critics, but to the traditional base of the Democratic Party he is often seen as not liberal enough. As details of the budget agreement came to light on Saturday, the first criticism came from the left, with Representative Jesse L. Jackson Jr., Democrat of Illinois, accusing the president of “keeping the government open on the backs of the poor and disenfranchised.”

....

After Republicans found success casting Mr. Obama as a reflexive liberal intent on expanding the reach of government, the president has sought to reintroduce himself as a pragmatic leader more attuned to the political center than to the ideologies of left or right. He has talked about this brand of politics for years, but now his challenge is to employ it.

Again, Zeleny had previously taken Obama at his word that he is "a pragmatic leader more attuned to the political center." If Zeleny truly thought Obama was only masquerading as a centrist and had failed to actually "employ" such politics, why didn't he mention this in his reporting?

Mr. Obama not only helped avoid the first government shutdown in 15 years, but also pressured Republicans to remove provisions intended to restrict financing for Planned Parenthood and to limit environmental regulations. In doing so, he assumed the role of a level-headed referee, rising above the squabbling to take ownership of a solution rather than a problem. “He’s the undisputed grownup in the group,” said Jim Jordan, a Democratic strategist who has managed Senate and presidential campaigns across the country. “Presidents almost always compare well against Congress.”

Zeleny also went on to praise Boehner’s handling of his own caucus.

Zeleny’s colleague Peter Baker made the same “pragmatist” claim in his front-page story for the Sunday Week in Review, “The Vision Thing – Above the fray, the president struggles to define liberalism in an era of debt.”

Mr. Obama has always cast himself as a pragmatist and he seems to be feeling his way in the post-midterm election environment.

Beat me...

Submitted by adamsmith on Mon, 04/11/2011 - 3:48pm.

Beat me to it 10k. I was going to ask, "How is a Communist a centrist?" The PROGRESSIVES still operate under the assumption that if you repeat a lie often enough it becomes truth. Unfortunately for them, Americans always vote with their wallets. Leaves Obamalinsky in a bind as he tries to get reelected while simultaneously ruining our economy with puppet master Soros...

Obama a "centrist" and "referee"??

Submitted by PrairieSky on Mon, 04/11/2011 - 2:09pm.

Who is Zeleny trying to fool here? Obama is no "centrist"...He's the farthest left president this country has ever had, and he's definitely no "referee" in the budget crisis...He certainly has also not been a participant, but he hasn't been a referee either...He has pretty much been MIA in this whole mess, until the absolute last minute when he began having those fevered, last ditch meetings with Reid and Boehner...Where had he been on this until then? Where was he last fall, when this budget should have been done? Obama was and is where he usually is...   checked out, and voting "present". Obama has been and is no centrist, no referee, and no leader.

Where had he been?

Submitted by Model850 on Mon, 04/11/2011 - 2:33pm.

Where he always is when there's a major issue to be faced: On the sidelines waiting to see which way the wind is going to blow. Then he jumps in at the last minute when he can either take credit for success or point his finger at "those responsible" for the failure. Either way he looks good to his MSM sycophants.

He is the prime example of someone who runs out in front of the parade at the end, claiming to have led all along (as long as the parade was successful, natch).

Exactly...That's Obama's method of operating alright...

Submitted by PrairieSky on Mon, 04/11/2011 - 10:01pm.

God forbid that he should ever take the initiative on something himself. I don't think this man has ever had an original thought in his entire life. Obama never fails to let others do the dirty work and the heavy lifting for him. No matter what is going on, or what mess he finds himself in, he always gives the appearance (at least to the MSM that is) of keeping his skirts nice and starched and clean. What a gutless wonder he is.

I've got an idea for a slogan for the 2012 election that describes him perfectly...

Barack Obama...Standing firm on ALL sides of every issue.

"Freedom is never more than one generation away from extinction...It must be fought for, protected, and handed on for them (our children) to do the same." ~President Ronald Reagan

If Obama were really pragmatic . . .

Submitted by Galvanic on Mon, 04/11/2011 - 2:51pm.

. . . he would've gotten the Democratic Congress to pass the FY2011 budget last September and avoided all this kubuki.

Instead, we get a President who in two short years has earned a reputation for aloofness and passivity.

Nobody but the entitlement

Nobody but the entitlement scammers buying that Obama (peace, union money and green energy be upon him) is anything but an idiot.

Shakier by the day...

Submitted by Slyrr on Mon, 04/11/2011 - 6:51pm.

The liberal media are looking and sounding shakier with each passing day. They can see the Obama house of cards collapsing all around them, and are still trying desperately to hold it up with their lies and half-truths. But more and more, they're sounding like even THEY cant' believe the pretzels they're having to twist themselves into in order to defend their 'sort of god' Obama.

They know what's coming, and they also know there's not a thing they can do to stop it. Liberal policies have laid the economy in ruins to the point where fixing it is going to take drastic measures. And they know that THEY - who pimped Obama before his election and whored themselves for him after his election - will be blamed.

They were his cheerleaders. They made excuses for him, they covered up for him. They lied, cheated, stole, fabricated, invegled, obfuscated and spat in the faces of the American people - for him. They pimped him as the cat's meow who would 'lower the levels of the sea' and blast rainbows out of his candy backside to cure the ills of the whole world.

Their failure is astronomical. And Democrats seem not merely content to fail - they have to fail spectacularly. And when that failure and the resultant civil strife come home to roost, there's gonna be heck to pay. And those mobs and those pitchforks will be going after the Democrats, and the media that lied for them.

If a Liberal/Democrat politician/media figure wants to put their arms around you, or pat you on the back, all they're doing is looking for a good place to stick a knife.
