New York Times Claims 'Muslims Have Grown Up in a Newly Hostile Country': The United States?
New York Times reporter Andrea Elliott won a Pulitzer Prize in 2007 for a series of articles about Sheik Reda Shata, an imam in Brooklyn. In a speech to the Times newsroom after her victory, her editor lauded the series for helping to tear down "the wall of hatred” against Muslims in America.
Sunday’s similar, 8,400-word magazine cover profile, “A Marked Man In America,” featured Yale Ph.D. candidate Yasir Qadhi, a conservative Muslim trying to make the case for non-violence to resistant and radicalized younger Muslims. Even while Elliott engaged in soft-pedaling Islamic extremism, as she did in her 2007 piece, Steven Emerson’s Investigative Project commented that Elliott’s “exhaustive profile of an Islamic cleric....makes the depth and severity of radicalization among some young Muslim Americans very clear,” even if she didn’t necessarily set out to do so.
But this paragraph by Elliott is wildly overstated.
But alienation has many faces. America’s youngest Muslims have grown up in a newly hostile country, with mounting opposition to the construction of mosques, a national movement seeking to ban courts from consulting shariah, or Islamic law, and rising hate crimes against Muslims. While some young Muslims have sought distance, abandoning Islam and even changing their names, others have experienced a spiritual awakening. The most conservative have found a home in Salafiya.
A “hostile country”? As stated here before, there was no violent backlash against Muslims after 9-11, and there certainly hasn’t been one recently. Far more “hate crimes” (an amorphous definition anyway) have been committed against Jews in America than against Muslims, with no outcry from the Times. And consulting Islamic law in American court should be offensive on its face to any self-respecting media outlet that has battled so fiercely in other contexts for the complete separation of church and state.

Man, the list keeps growing, I cannot keep up with all the folks I'm suppose to hate. Okay, everyone who hates our country, I hate you, so leave. But that leaves our country without a president....,Me, too

I can't keep up either. My default is to now just hate everybody that I don't know, and let people work their way up with me if they want to. It's saving me a lot of time, if nothing else. BTW, SOBama has not managed to make any progress with me so far.Hostile?

To many (if not most) young people in America today, simply raising your voice is a "hostile act". It's just one more of the sad results of modern liberalism. [NEVER,NEVER trust a "liberal" ( progressive)]OK, Ms Elliot, I'll give you

The Chinese emigrated to America in great numbers a long, long time ago but I don't ever remember recall them whining about not being allowed to introduce Buddhist or Confucian laws into our courts.
Of course they sometimes settled things amongst themselves, but that is different from trying to shove their own particular jurisprudence down everyone else's throats.

I agree with the New York Times. American culture is hostile towards Islam. Our culture of freedom, equal rights for both men and women, an open society, and secular government is hostile to the teachings and true followers of the Koran and sharia.
And thank goodness it is.

I don't even think there is rising opposition to Mosques in America... I think there is opposition to ONE PARTICULAR MOSQUE and like a TYPICAL LIBERAL, she exagerates ONE to mean EVERY ONE! This is why Liberals win elections though to them ONE (vote) means (ALL the votes!)Um, pardon me for asking, but....

We can't have an historic cross on "public property" or that can even be seen from public property (highway)....but the liberals are all cool about implementing Sharia law in our courts?
What's wrong with this picture?
Sorry...I seem to be in sarcastic question mode today. I guess the idiocy is getting to me more today than is good for my blood pressure.

Submitted by Beukeboom on Tue, 03/22/2011 - 12:15pm.
I remember after 9/11 liberals warning that attacks on Muslims would rise as a result. They didn't. Yet those same libs keep giving out the same bogus warnings whenever some Islamic terrorist took American lives. And in each and every instance, those warnings turn out to be equally as bogus.
Elliott is guilty of perpetuating that liberal myth. There is not, nor has there ever been, a "wall of hatred” regarding Muslims in the United States. The "hostile country" label is not only fallacious (appeal to emotion) but also a lie.
Now why would that be?
Submitted by Comrade Jim on Tue, 03/22/2011 - 12:50pm.
Where could such hostility originate? (That is if opposition to the ground zero mosque is hostility.) Um,... let's see,... Twin Towers, maybe, Pentagon, Fields of PA, Major Hassan's mass shooting,... threats of continued acts terrorism planned in mosques. I guess the NYT somehow just missed this subtle connection. Oh, and this: Claiming to be at war with infidels, radical Muslims have committed thousands of acts of terrorism all over the world (Britain, Germany, France, Russia, Spain,..., Philippines, Indonesia,... India,... Israel,...) not just the US. This has created plenty of hostility to Islam around the world. Now here is the big puzzle for the NYT: why ever would such behavior cause any hostility to Islam around the world?Muslims in a Hostile Country?

sharia law is quite concerning - but it needs to be resisted using American principles of debate and discussion - some of the hostile comments here would probably not be conducive to that - I know its difficult not to get angered about Muslims and Sharia law here but the tone of the commentary and debate is important if we really want to neutralize Sharia law and other un-American efforts by not only Muslims but also hispanics and other groupsCongratulations Jimmy Carter!

There is no equivalency between sharia and the Mexican roofers preference for big four-wheel drive pick-ups blasting accordian music(?) as they drive to work before sunrise.
In case you don't see it yet, without young immigrants, we will resemble Japan's aging population in a couple more decades. Take your pick, Hispanics or Muslims. White people are not having enough babies to do more than replace their numbers. Hispanics have quite a bit in common with American culture. Can you say the same for Shiites?
It is not enough to ask Muslims to keep Sharia to themselves. Killing your daughter because she wears clothes you don't like isn't ever going to deserve tolerance or understanding, or even reasonable discussion. Let's ask the pedophiles like the late Allen Ginsburg to keep it to themselves, too.
'Resist Sharia' through debate and discussion? No, ban Sharia as un-American as it is and buy passage for those who want to be ruled in a Sharia governed country.
The way I see it...

...Most religions give you a choice; You decide how you want to live your life no matter whether you end up in Heaven or Hell. It was your choice and now you must accept the consequences.Islam, however, claims that making a choice on how you want to live your life is a sin, punishable by death. Islam also states that voting is a sin, writing and implementing laws is a sin, and even considering whether or not to vote, or whether or not to run for legislative office are all sins. Islam believes God is the ultimate legislator and mankind is incompetent at writing legislation.
I read this at a US based web site that claims that Sharia Law in the US is inevitable, but I forget the URL.

Muslim countries throughout history......it's not a coincidence. Even in a country like Lebanon, where they had some semblance of democracy, the hatred of the Muslim population for the Christians makes it impossible. The current unauthorized bombing campaign in Libya is a farce. You think if the rebels win, whether it be there or in Egypt, that they'll establish some kind of democratic rule? He!l no!! It might even get worse if the Muslim Brotherhood or Al Qaeda are calling the shots. "islamophobia" is a name in search of a syndrome. after 9/11, "hate crimes" on Muslims did go up temporarily--all the way to something like 800. yeah. 800 crimes for the whole United States. anti-Jewish hate crimes happen EIGHT TIMES AS OFTEN as anti-Muslim crimes (per FBI stats), but you don't see teh NYT saying that America is "hostile to Jews," do you? and speaking of my fellow Jews: we don't eat pork either, you know. I mention this because for the 50+ years of my life, Jews have been calmly avoiding pork products with no fanfare. now Muslims don't eat pork either, but for some reason just not eating pork is not an option for them. no--NO ONE may eat pork. there can BE no pork products. schools have already started just leaving it off the menu so as not to offend the constantly-offended Muslims. America sure doesn't sound very hostile to me. in fact, it seems to me that we bend over backwards to accommodate Muslims in ways we would NEVER do for Jews or Christians.Tearing down a wall of hatred???
