NY Times 'Bows' to Obama Officials Who Insist President Observed Protocol in Japan

The New York Times dismissed the controversy over Obama’s long, deep bow before the Emperor of Japan over the weekend -- a story all over the Drudge Report and conservative blogs -- in its Monday story praising Obama’s “progress” in getting Russia on board for sanctions against Iran: “In China, Obama to Press For Tough Stance on Iran -- Seeking to Replicate Progress With Russia.”

And if that “progress” with Russia fades, will the Times follow up? Watch this space.

Diplomatic correspondent Helene Cooper and David Barboza emphasized the positive:

President Obama, fresh from making progress in his efforts to get Russia on board for possible tough new sanctions against Iran, arrived in China on Sunday, where he will attempt the even more difficult task of prodding China’s leaders to get tough on Iran.

Making his first trip to China, Mr. Obama landed in Shanghai during a late-night downpour and was set to begin three days of meetings to discuss climate change, North Korea and the global economic crisis with President Hu Jintao.

Cooper and Barboza dismissed the bowing controversy as an unfair attack by conservative bloggers, and used as its source...the Obama administration itself. There’s a non-balanced protocol expert for you.

During Mr. Obama’s trip, his first to Asia as president, he has taken to referring to himself as “America’s first Pacific president,” a term he first used during a speech in Tokyo on Saturday morning.

Mr. Obama drew some fire from conservative American bloggers who accused him of going too far to reassure Asian leaders: they complained that he should not have bowed to Emperor Akihito of Japan when he went to the emperor’s residence for lunch.

“During his meetings and his speech in Tokyo, the president observed protocol and enhanced the status of American interests in Japan and across Asia,” said an administration official traveling with the president, who spoke on the condition of anonymity according to protocol. “Those who suggest otherwise are way off base and only looking to score political points.”

ABC News wasn’t as sanguine. White House reporter Jake Tapper ran a knowledgeable source’s observation:

Kyodo News is running his appropriate and reciprocated nod and shake with the Empress, certainly to show the president as dignified, and not in the form of a first year English teacher trying to impress with Karate Kid-level knowledge of Japanese customs.

Back in June 1994, Times reporter Douglas Jehl was a lot harder on President Bill Clinton for a less embarrassing show of obsequiousness before the Emperor of Japan:

It wasn't a bow, exactly. But Mr. Clinton came close. He inclined his head and shoulders forward, he pressed his hands together. It lasted no longer than a snapshot, but the image on the South Lawn was indelible: an obsequent President, and the Emperor of Japan.

Canadians still bow to England's Queen; so do Australians. Americans shake hands. If not to stand eye-to-eye with royalty, what else were 1776 and all that about? But Mr. Clinton, alas, is not the only one since George Washington who has seemed not quite to know what to make of monarchs.

The President of the United States bow to No Man or Woman. In fact, no Americans need bow to anyone!

I couldn’t care less who Obama bows to as a private citizen. But as President, his bow reveals a frightening and fundamental misunderstanding of what America is.

He was reading Marx when he should have been reading Locke.
Reading Alinsky, when he should have been reading Rousseau.
He doesn’t understand the 2,500 years of philosophical thought, of pain and peril, of courage and commitment, suffering and subjugation that led to these words:

We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.

No man is born to be an emperor, king, or dictator;
but neither is any man born a servant.

America bows to no man.

We are not subjects of a king.
We are not serfs paying tribute to a manor lord.
We are not slaves, owing our labors to the plantation.
We are not cogs in a wheel or nameless faces in a collectivist commune.

We are, each of us, individuals. Responsible for our own fate. Nothing is given to us but an orderly society, handed down to us by way of a pact, a Constitution. It is up to each individual to choose a path and find a purpose.

To many people, these words are just platitudes; airy, meaningless words to be read from a teleprompter without feeling or conviction.

But these words mean something else to me. Obama’s bow shows me that our hearts are not in the same place. America is a different place to him than it is to me. And that makes me both sad and frightened.

If only NB had been this concerned with the what the Bush Admin. was doing, we might not be in Iraq. NB and other conservative news really likes to make a big deal of Obama bowing to other foriegn leaders. I know diplomacy is a foriegn matter after the Bush Admin. and forget of their relationship with Saudi leaders and hand-holding and kissing.

Your patriotism and commitment to freedom is very nice to see. Unless by "Pursuit of Happiness" you mean same-sex marriage. Same-sex couples chose the wrong path and need to be denied these same freedoms, right? It's ironic you mention slavery, when the Constitution still made allowance for it to continue.

You liberals always mention this episode as "Bush did it too nah nah nah nah" which is false: the cheek kissing and hand holding was a gesture among equals just like the French or European custom of kissing both cheeks in greeting. Obama on the other hand is bowing lower than the head of state of another country. He can bow if he wishes although it is not expected but culturally a lower bow in Japan is a show of subservience and of a social inferior to a superior. It has meaning whether you choose to believe it or not. The bow should have been slight and of equal height of the emperor's bow. He either is incredibly stupid or his protocol geeks are idiots. And speaking of protocol why can't he put his hand over his heart when the National Anthem is played. This denial of custom and protocol in my eyes is his explicit message that he hates this country like most libs.

I could see the president do a proper bow as is customary in some cultures. But, this is a very bad bow.

 He should have done a proper bow (if he insisted) at the hips with the back at a slight arch hands at the side. Then he should have shaken his hand.Persaonally I do not think the President of the U.S. needs to bow to Emperor Akihito as we defeated them in our last conflict.

Really the event just shows how inept Obama is. 

Nor does he

have to bow to the leader, and heir, to Mao. In the words of Ronald Reagan, there he goes again.
