New York Times Declares Obama Victory on Health Care! (Again)

Obama victory on health care reform is just around the corner! Once again.

Monday's collaboration in the New York Times by health reporter Robert Pear and White House correspondent Sheryl Gay Stolberg was headlined "Obama Strategy on Health Care Legislation Appears to Be Paying Off."

After months of plodding work by five Congressional committees and weeks of back-room bargaining by Democratic leaders, President Obama's arms-length strategy on health care appears to be paying dividends, with the House and the Senate poised to take up legislation to insure nearly all Americans.

Debate in the House is expected to begin this week, and the Senate will soon take up its version. Democratic leaders and senior White House officials are sounding increasingly confident that Mr. Obama will sign legislation overhauling the nation's health care system -- a goal that has eluded American presidents for decades.

Pear and Stolberg aren't the first Times reporters to declare an Obama victory on the health "reform" front. David Herszenhorn did the same back on September 10, calling Obama's joint address to Congress on health reform "a clear turning point in the health care debate."

Not quite. And back on June 19, Kevin Sack wrote:

In their heart of hearts, few in the Obama administration would have predicted late last year that they would be this well positioned by June to achieve a major victory on health care. As the economy faltered, and attention focused on Wall Street and Detroit, it seemed unthinkable that Congress would be ready to devote the summer of 2009 to the costly proposition of providing health coverage for all, a goal that has eluded presidents since Theodore Roosevelt.

Oops.

The actual article from Pear and Stolberg contained caveats that somewhat undermined the optimistic headline:

The bills have advanced further than many lawmakers expected. Five separate measures are now pared down to two. But the legislative progress has come at a price. In the absence of specific guidance from the White House, it has moved ahead in fits and starts. From here on, the challenges will only grow more difficult.

The Times admitted that "lawmakers have missed many deadlines" and that obstacles remained -- over abortion, and a possible revolt by liberals over the weakened government insurance plan. Pear and Stolberg argued that "Mr. Obama's hands-off strategy carries particular risks."

But they concluded that the White House's slow, incremental strategy was planned all along:

Indeed, that is exactly what White House officials were trying to do. They described their legislative strategy as a very step-by-step process, in which they kept intensely focused on the next specific goal: passing a bill out of this or that committee, resolving the doubts of particular lawmakers, like the liberals who met with Mr. Obama on Thursday.

"Worst Bill Ever"

The conflicting headlines within an inch of each other: WSJ "Worst Bill Ever" and NYT "Obama Victory on Health Care" explains the graph showing the only daily newspaper making a profit with rising subscriptions remains the WSJ while way at the bottom of the graph the Washington Post, LA Times and NYT revenues were plunging.

Huh?

"...a goal that has eluded American presidents for decades."

"... a goal that has eluded presidents since Theodore Roosevelt."

What planet are these people on?  Only a couple of presidents have made it a goal or even made an effort in that direction.  Okay, one president and one pushy first lady.

I was thinking the same thing...

You know what they really meant was "...a goal that has eluded legitimate American presidents for decades."

Studyingthe diseased minds of the leftists is elightening but at the same time terrifying, becasue apparently some of them actually beleive their drivel.

Then there is this tiny little problem

The whole notion of government rationed healthcare is un_Constitutional. Nowhere in the enumerated powers does it say mandating you buy healthcare from the federal government is found, and the commerce clause cannot be in anyway stretched to include running healthcare.

And then ... There is Roe v Wade and the right to privacy. You know how hard the liberals fight to keep abortion patients medical records safe from prying eyes, I expect they will do the same for you turning over ALL your medical records for the feds to look over.

This whole government rationed healthcare Obami-nation is un-Constitutional. In 1994 the CBO said as much about Hillary-care.

Irrelevant

Not to me or to you, but to them.

I have heard various senators and congressmen say that bascially "we do a lot of things that are not in the constitution" which means they dont understand how the constitution works, nor care for that matter.

They have the power so we need to shut the hell up and take it according to them.

We will see about that come 2010 and 2012, today is a little preview of that.

Re Constitutional

That's an interesting discussion. The Commerce clause has been pushed far beyond anything the founders might have desired and sooner or later the Supreme Court has to stop the creep. More here:

Hey--I am confused

The Times says it was his laid-back attitude that turned the tide...but Chris and Howie said his laid-back attitude made them wonder if he was smarter than they were... I guess the Wall St Journal is now on the Fecal Roster at the WH, huh?

Sure!

Since 1945 they've been trying to make us all commies under the UN.

Obama's victory will be ours in that this will be the last nail in the coffin of  his already doomed presidential career.
